This was a spot that my girlfriend's dad frequents when he goes to the hospital for appointments. She tried it and told me that it reminded her of homemade food that she grew up with. Monarca's is exactly what you think of when you walk in and see all the Monarch butterfly decor on every wall, including the orange walls. Monarchs are my favorite so I give them props for that. The food is good, I got the crunchy tacos with rice and beans and it was definitely that homemade type of food you found in a Mexican family home. My girlfriend got the Milanesa torta with beef, lettuce and tomato. She got fries with it but didn't have them all. I'm glad we gave it a chance and for the doctors and nurses across the street, its legitimate Mexican food to enjoy. The plaza it's in is a little stand offish but dont let that stop you from coming here ! Parking is always available in the plazas A husband/wife run this spot ... they're from Michoacán and yes they have a big menu & I've literally got random things like sopa de albondigas , tortas, bunuelos, different drinks , enchiladas, Chile relleno (omg obsessed with it) and I've noticed everything is made fresh to order .... Sign me up for a mom-and-pop hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. Located in a small strip mall, this place is no frills and serves up authentic Mexican dishes. The lady behind the counter was so friendly and welcoming. I just got the Monarch's burrito which comes with rice beans, guacamole, etc.. and it was great. If you are quite hungry, and have been visiting a sick relative across the street at Kaiser hospital, this place offers remarkably good food in a remarkably shabby setting. Don't let the chipped paint and old floor and very worn furniture deter you. The offerings are many, and if the makings are available, you'll get pretty much what you want. Prices are on the high side considering the small portion size given. This restaurant uses 8" plates, which are much smaller than is the norm. They're stingy with their table chips as well, which are doled out in a rather meagre way. I had a traditional tostada with chicken, served on a flat tortilla and lots of greens. The chicken and beans were hot. Good taste. The other person I was with had the enchilada and taco combo. Great rice. You could do much worse than this place. Outside in the front window was a sign for free soda. We were greeted by a friendly lady. Food was prompt and great taste. One order was tamale, rice, and beans. The other a chicken tostada in a flour shell. The soda ordered was a root beer. The check came and we asked the waitress why the soda wasn't free? Her reply was Well you have to order the Chicken Enchiladas Verdes. There was no sign outside saying this. The soda should have been free or taken off our check. So needless to say we won't be returning. Also there is a sign in the window no public restroom. We asked if we needed to use the restroom could we? The answer was No sorry. We ate dinner there after a flight into Long Beach from Atlanta. What a great place!!! The service was fantastic, my wife's tamale was perfect, and my torta was pretty good. Was charged $38 for one shrimp cocktail‍I am a regular customer so I know the prices. The lady who is usually there gives me 2 cups for $38 @ $15 a piece. Today there was another gentleman who charged me $38 for one. When I got home I called the restaurant and told him you overcharged me he said no the cup he used was a 34 oz not a 32oz that they usually use, which is crazy cause now your charging me $15 for an extra 2oz cup..horrible. The main reason I am giving this restaurant five stars is for the caldo de res! I called several other restaurants and wasted about 30 minutes of my time trying to find out if they had caldo de res. Unfortunately everyone else only had chicken or albondiga. I was starting to get frustrated and then bam, I found this gem. I spoke to a lady over the phone and immediately realized this place might be a winner. She sounded exactly like my grandma! I didn't have a problem ordering the caldo and she was extremely happy to help me through my order. I arrived at the restaurant and realized it was a hole in the wall. The building is a bit old and all the homeless people hanging around the front of the building make the location not so desirable. I walked inside the restaurant and noticed everything was moved due to covid. The lady gave me my order and I took it home to eat. Once home, I tried the caldo de res and immediately realized this place makes it just how it should be made. The spices they use make the caldo taste very good. You don't get that "can" like taste or like some other places; that sewer water smell. The res is very soft and cooked right. The vegetables they added compliment the spices. Overall, I don't think you'll find a better caldo de res. I also bought a carne asada burrito but didn't find anything amazing about it. It was good but nothing to give major praise about. The salsa and chips were good too but not like wow this is so good. All together, this place is perfect if you want Caldo, everything else is decent but not crazy amazing. I hope that helps you guys. We came here during a fieldwork lunch. They served complimentary chips and salsa. Our orders were: My co-worker and I shared an order of Horchata. I ordered some chips, refried beans and Carnitas Taco. My co-worker ordered the Carnitas as well and also a Beef Burrito. We both agreed that the Carnitas was dry. I tried the Beef Burrito and it was pretty good. It was priced around $10-- expensive for this kind of place. (Do expect to spend $15 - $20 here.) The burrito was huge. My co-worker, a guy, and I thought that they could have made the burrito smaller and charged less. Restrooms: No public restrooms. But they have a faucet and sink available should you wish to wash your hands. Parking: This is in a strip mall and there was ample parking when we got there (just before noon).
