Nothing like an actual doughnut. We couldn't finish it either. Overall we were disappointed and will mostly likely not go back. If we do, we'd stick with the lemon cupcakes and skip everything else!

To be honest, calling Nonni's a "bakery" really shortchanges Grandma, because it is SO much more than that. Yes, of course they sell an incredible variety of beautifully crafted cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and cannolis, but you can also buy breakfast sandwiches, pizza, stromboli, arancino, stuffed breads, grinders, chicken cutlets and more. Their store is awesome, and you'll find yourself staring at their showcases and refrigerated cases. Service is top notch, with plenty of helpful and smiling folks helping you. We picked up an eclectic group of odds and ends - croissants, donuts, danishes, and a big arancini stuffed with meat and vegetables. Upon entering the brightly lit and freshly painted shop you will see a unique opening between the two businesses. Keeping the vegan flowing freely! There is seating at the front, near the windows and the cases filled with goodies are toward the back. We were immediately welcomed. The gentleman behind the counter excitedly greeted us. My son and I looked over the cookies, bars and cupcakes and finally decided on a tray of 4 cupcakes. We were here for my husband that does not eat dairy, most nuts and a list of other things. Before I made my picks I discussed what the nut free options were and when I stumped the nice man, he called his wife, the baker. Kudos to him for going above and beyond. We picked up Cookies and Cream, Boston Cream, Triple Chocolate....and I can't remember the 4th....but he ate it and enjoyed it! While I didn't actually try any of the sweets, my husband said that what he has had was good. He was told to savor them, because they were not inexpensive. Definitely worth the trip and the splurge. Gotta say, it was worth the wait. My friend opted for the Charter Oak Chocolate cupcake with brown sugar buttercream frosting. I chose the Capital: moist vanilla cake with pecans, pineapple, & banana... I also selected the brown sugar buttercream & had the cupcake filled with Boston Cream. Almost as good as the custom cupcakes are their clever CT inspired names: Plain Twain, Mohegan Mocha, Charter Oak Chocolate, Colony Carrot, Yankee Lemon & more. I also doubt that Murphy ever tried a cupcake or there would be a "except if there is a cupcake involved" clause to all his laws. The Cupcake Brake is a brightly coloured yellow truck that parks in different areas of Hartford each day. You can either leave getting a cupcake to the serendipitous chance of running into the truck... or if you're more aggressive about your cupcake hunting you can sign up for the email updates (on the website) or follow TheCupcakeBrake on Twitter. Larry (or as I call him "The Cupcake Man") makes phenomenal little cupcakes that really pack a powerful punch. How's that for accidental alliteration? Upon arriving at the cupcake truck you're met with an absurd amount of choices as you choose the type of cupcake base, the frosting and whether or not you'd like it filled (and if so, with what!). Decisions, decisions. My first impression upon lifting my cupcake from its nondescript white paper bag was that I should go back and order one more. It seemed smaller than the monstrous ones that have become so popular (Crumbs..). I was wrong however, and I was completely satisfied with one. The frosting was buttery and rich and not overwhelmingly sweet. The cupcake base was moist and dense, a nice contrast from the frosting. I'd ordered peanut butter filling that was nice and nutty, but I think I'll have to try the marshmallow or Boston creme next time. I finished my cupcake and had to fight the urge to try capturing the icing that had been left behind inside the bag. Take that Murphy.

A few years ago, I bought a frozen pie from a co-worker and planned to put it out on our Thanksgiving dessert table. Well, that didn't work out because I forgot to take it out of the freeze! But even if I remembered to do that, I still would have been a "Fail" because that pie was uncooked and needed to be popped in the oven for 45 minutes. I totally missed that little nugget of instructions. Which finally brings me to Granny's Pie Factory in East Hartford. You don't need a master's degree in cryptology to surmise that Granny's Pie Factory sells pies, but what you might not expect is that they sell a large variety of fresh and frozen pies that are FULLY COOKED. Their website boasts 53 varieties of fully finished fruit and creme pies, either fresh or frozen. They come in a variety of sizes - 6 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch. We picked up a frozen 10-inch Strawberry Rhubarb pie ($19). It was massive and seemed to weigh as much as a bowling ball. It clocked in at 2 pounds and eleven ounces. We sawed it in half and put it in our freezer for eventual use of one half a pie at a time. It is fully cooked and only needs to be thawed out to be enjoyed. No doubt we will enjoy it!
