Mongo has a style similar to Genghis Grill; you pick what kinds of food you want in a bowl, select your sauce, then give it to the chefs who stir fry it all together and make it delicious. I'm usually a fan of these type of places, so I was looking forward to eating here. I feel like the bowls here were on the smaller side and the way the ingredients were prepared made it hard to add a substantial amount, unless you wanted your bowl to have a total of 3 ingredients. It made it very difficult to fashion up a dish that meets your expectations. The sauces are a nice gem though. I was really surprised by their flavors and they really add a depth of flavor on top of the stir fry. They have little sample spoons to taste the sauces before you choose, but I still had a hard time deciding. I ended up going with the house sauce, but it was a difficult decision. Two of our roles were decent, but we had a pink lady roll which was the worst roll I've ever had. I'm the worlds least picky eater, but I couldn't even eat that despite my hunger. This place has definitely gone down from aprox 3 years ago. I'm not sure if they have new owners or what. I went in for a to go Mongolian at 11am thinking everything would be fresh. I mostly go in for the veggies as the cabbage and bean sprouts were very brown in color. I asked for the manager and the owner came out and he didn't seem to concerned I just told him I wouldn't be back not knowing he was the manager at the time. As I checked out the guy at the register told me that the guy I was talking to was the manager. Delicious and cheap sushi! Mongo is located in the Pearland Town Center. If you want to order a bowl you first choose what type of carbs you want like white rice, brown rice, noodles, etc. You then choose your veggies and protein. Its kind of a task if you've never experience this style before. I got white rice, broccoli, mushrooms, chicken, beef, shrimp, and eggs. I added cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, and garlic. I chose Teriyaki for my sauce. When in doubt choose teriyaki. They have sample cups if you want to taste it. I also ordered the crunch roll. It was basic but good. The ponzu sauce didn't taste great. The prices are just fantastic - All day everyday happy hour with no drinks costing over $5.50. Bottled beers are just 3! We got 3 beers, a marg, 2 apps, and 2 sushi rolls for $43 including a tip...wow. The mango marg tasted like a popsicle, YUM. The cheese Rangoon were solid, crispy spring rolls were just okay (inside was a little mushy), Philadelphia roll was solid and Yummy roll was delicious! Located next to the city of Houston in Pearland. This place is just magical. When you enter, you are greeted with a bar to your right, open seating in the middle, and hibachi grill in the back. As you can tell from the pictures, we ordered two types of milk tea: the regular milk tea and the taro milk tea (personal favorite). The teas come in these gigantic beer mugs so you'd probably get full from just drinking a tea. We made our own hibachi bowl with white chicken meat and teriyaki sauce and beef with Mongolian bbq sauce along with assortment of vegetables cooked with udon. The udon is so soft and the beef is actually Angus grade. Next, we ordered lobster and shrimp hibachi. The lobster tail on top is actually empty because the meat is hidden on the bottom. It too was delicious (especially with the white sauce!) Finally, we had three types of sushi. First was a love roll which is actually seared salmon with crab and avocado inside. Second was ahi pepper tuna which almost tasted like beef...but tuna. Last was the yummy roll which is a great deal ($6)! Once upon a time, this guy was hungry. He hadn't been to HEB to get groceries, he had no left overs, and the moon was crawling high into the night. The stir fry section was still open as was the kitchen. So here's what had happened... My eyes are always trying to make my stomach fat as hell. I ordered appetizers first. Salmon Sashimi, Fried calamari, Veggie tempura. The salmon was fresh, well portioned, and delicious. it's hard to mess up a chunk of raw fish. the fried calamari was good, the seasoning was interesting. Because it was thicker on the batter, you didn't get the calamari taste as much, but for the price it was good. The veggie tempura was crunchy and hot, also good portions. Then I got my rotund rear up to the stir fry spot and loaded up a few bowls. For the gents to cook. From what I can remember, I went with two types of mushrooms, garlic, ginger, chicken, beef, scallops, peppers onions, baby corn, bamboo, onions, curry, pepper, salt, garlic, a sweet sauce and a spicy sauce with thick noodles and peanuts. They worked their dark magic for about 10 minutes, and I proceeded to destroy that bowl with haste. The pricing was very good for the amount of food I engorged myself upon. I've never been to a Mongolian restaurant that I hated with a passion. "Hate is a strong word, not in our house!" Yup, come on I can name so many of things I didn't like about this place. First, the interior is fairly dark and brightly lit with blue backdrop. Now, that's nice for a sexual orgy play, but for a dining experience. I'll need to know where my food is in order to eat it. The music that gets played throughout the restaurant was excruciatingly loud for my ears and that made it so difficult to talk with my friend. I literally had to scream my way of speaking. Oh, and since my friend and I requested a table instead of a booth, the hostess walked us to an even crowded area of dining. Oh, I dreaded to be in such a small cubby-hole. No space to the next person and people sitting in front of you, staring at you eating. Sheesh, so dang-annoying! I know, she had seen those tables on the outside of that cubby-hole, but still wanted to make it obvious of what we didn't want. Our waitress, though was nice, but overly too annoyingly nice. She wasn't as sincere with her sweet jokingly attitude as I spotted it several times on her face expression. Now, the food. It was by far the worst! Talk about bland food!! Even the miso soup didn't taste homemade, I figured it wasn't since it sat cold very quick. It wasn't as flavorful and salty as I had in the past at Yummy's. The hibachi salmon that came with a side of rice, white sauce, and mixed vegetables were all equally nasty. The salmon had one acquired taste to it and as I love sweet tasting ingredients on my savory meat; that was overbearingly sweet and I didn't taste any other flavor. It could easily tell the salmon was pre-cooked from a frozen bag from Sam's or Costcos. The rice, ewww like WTF was in that? It tasted beyond gross like it was dropped and picked up again. I had to add salt and pepper and it still was disgusting! Also, the white sauce wasn't even mentioned in the menu, so my friend and I was clueless on what it was. We asked our waitress and she said it was some ginger sauce, but she didn't say what it was for. I sampled a tiny drop of mines and couldn't stomach it. Now, the mixed vegetables were definitely caveman food. No salt, pepper, Mrs. Dash or any Mongolian seasonings add to it neither was it added to the entire meal. However, the only good thing about this restaurant was how clean the ladies restroom was. It was clean and smelled fresh. Oh and how our waitress seemed to be stalking me while I came out the restroom. She kept on suggesting that we were gonna come back, I hope my face expression reassured her that I wouldn't step back in this beyond-low of a Mongolian restaurant. Frankly, it was quite obvious our waitress was doing too much as when she picked up our plates and somehow managed to drop a fork that fell under and between my friend's legs. She bent down to pick it up which seemed even more awkward as if she was going down on him; she immediately stop trying to reach it and she giggled a little and left. Anywho, I'm not sure how could this place even be authentic, there was only one Asian guy here that seemed to be the owner as he kept smiling and staring at us like Albert from Yummy's in Kemah. Plus, there's no Mongolian spices being added. Additionally, on the menu: none of the sushi rolls specified what came in each roll. It just stated the name of the roll. That right there tells you the rolls are pre-made and store-bought. Of course, people of Pearland expect restaurants of this such and assume it's exotic due to its name. love this place! used to come here all the time as a kid and now that i'm grown, i still come here all the time! the mongolian fire out is always amazeballs, but lately i have had issues with some pieces of food i didn't order ending up in my food due to the shared cooking space nature of the restaurant. My family and I have been coming here from when the time they first opened. We have always enjoyed it and come here quite often. I was skeptical at first, being I have to season my own dish, but from the first bowl I made, I felt like a great chef. I have yet to have a bad bowl here. The sushi is great as well. We love that they place music and have TVs playing the games at night. One occasion that stood out to me was my wife's birthday in January. I decided to surprise my wife with all of her close friends all in one place. I called Mongo a few nights prior and they said there would be no problem accommodating our large group. The night of, we walked in and just like they said, they had a large space saved for us. All of our friends to this day still rave about the food. Took the wife on a movie and lunch date, was very excited to try Mongo for the first time. Unfortunately we had a less than stellar experience. Our waitress was very unfriendly, inattentive, and barely spoke English which led to a difficult ordering experience. She seemed incredibly confused and progressively more and more irritated as we ordered sushi and drinks from the happy hour. At one point she would drop food off, mutter something in a different language under her breath, and rush away. Aside from that, the sushi and rolls were fine, very pretty in their presentation. Honestly some were a little unfresh tasting/smelling. The eel nigiri and yummy roll were excellent. The hibachi chicken dish was very standard affair and plain. My dinner bowl came out great love the flavors and all my add ins, but I wish I could have had more pad Thai noodles and that they weren't chopped to little pieces.
