Glen and Diane sold the restaurant- and knowing them personally, I totally understand why- but the new owners have turned a reliable and homey place into a poorly-run attempt at a hip joint in a very quiet little beach hamlet. Today some family and I made a dinner reservation. We were sat almost immediately upon arriving, but our waiter was pulling double duty as barkeep, and he did neither job well. My Mom had to go up to the hostess to get place settings, to the bar to get our refills, to another server to check on the status of our order (which had been given to our wait 45mins earlier), and back to the bar to get our check. Our waiter never once checked on us; we didn't see him after he took our order until it was time to pay up. When we voiced our concerns, he was not thrilled to hear that he had done a poor job, and sent Chris, the manager (and possibly owner? Not sure) over to us. Chris did listen attentively and thanked us for our feedback, which is the only reason this review has as many stars as it does. The restaurant had a rather limited menu, and they were out of a lot of stuff. I ordered the fried scallop basket with sweet potato fries. $30 for half a dozen small, overcooked scallops and mushy fries? Not worth it. Their prices are sky high for the region and for the quality and quantity of food served. I know, I know- this sounds awfully like I am clutching my pearls and telling naughty children to get off my lawn. But over the decades of patronage of Spinney's- both the restaurant and the guest house- I had never had a disappointing experience before the new owners got their claws in this beautiful place.

I was able to find a spot to accommodate my care and the small packing trailer on the hitch. Once we were parked we made our way to the buildings. The one building you order your lobster, another building you order other items. It was a very easy and simple process. Between all of us there was so much lobster and other fine dining options. The lobster was fresh and sweet. It was very delicious. The lobster came with corn and potatoes. The butter was perfect! It had that foaming too I love! My husband enjoyed his fried haddock sandwich and the fried scallops. He raved about the fried scallops. The staff were great. They were kind, helpful and hard working. The view was stunning. I saw a loon and was able to adventure on the rocks during low tide. Overall this was a beautiful spot to start our Maine vacation. I highly recommend checking out Five Islands Lobster

The lobster meat came right out of the shell (shout out to some man on the dock who helped us Marylanders with some verbal direction) and were full and flavorful! We are big crab eaters but it takes about 6 or more XL crabs to feel as full as we did with one lobster! The onion rings and oysters were perfectly fried and just as delicious. The oysters came with fries (which explains the ketchup) as well and all were large portions. It was the perfect location too! Not noisy, beautiful scenery, and just all around a great atmosphere.

We tried a lobster roll, and it may have been the most perfect one I've ever had...super fresh, very lightly dressed, on a very buttery perfectly toasted bun. Important to note that there are no dogs allowed, and no smoking allowed, despite it being outdoors.

It's not a plate of fish, it's a BOWL of fish, And it comes with crunchy fries, also a big serving. We think that may ruiined us for anyone else's haddock for a long, long time. I bought an 8 oz. container of fresh crab meat and went home to make my own. I put just enough Hellmans in to bind it together, but gently, so as not to destroy the chunks. I grilled up a side split hot dog roll with butter and stuffed it. - sounds dirty. It didn't taste like any crab roll I had ever had before. The meat was sweet like lobster. The 8 oz. container I purchased for $7.00 in June '08 was enough to make 3 really sizeable rolls. Moody's sells out of their truck on Saturdays in the Vigues Furniture lot in Brunswick. It is right next to Fat Boy's. He stays there until he sells out, and last weekend that was 11:30 am. It was truly amazing and I'm not sure I'll ever buy a crab roll from a restaurant again.

It has all the credentials for perfection...outdoor seating overlooking a body of water...in this case the beautiful Kennebec River, including a spectacular view of the big bridge over it. Watching boats go by, and people walking in the walking path to get to the park right next door...perfect for people and dog watching. Plus, OysHers allows well behaved dogs at the outdoor seating area. The menu includes MANY varieties of sparking wines, including a mimosa flight, and all local oysters, all sourced from women-owned oyster farmers, plus they have their own oyster farm as well. The menu does include a few non-seafood items, such as the classic Maine red hot dog. The menu also includes some caviar in case there is a need for a special occasion caviar celebration. There are a variety of seating options outside and inside. There are firepit tables with Adirondack chairs, regular tables and chairs, picnic tables, and high top tables. There is a beautiful display of the days oyster selection inside on ice. The ordering process is simple...order what you want at the register, tell them where you're seated (we were are fire pit #2) and they bring your order to you. You can start a tab or pay as you go. Each table has a little sign that says what the table name/number is. We went on a Wednesday afternoon so we did not try the fire pit. It is a great reason to go back. We tried the mimosa flight (orange, grapefruit, cranberry, and lemon) and a flight of oysters (4 different varieties). I couldn't tell you which one was best...they were all perfect. I especially loved how expertly they were shucked and cut loose. Every oyster slid out of its shell without any resistance and each oyster had all of its liquor. They were perfectly clean and chilled and served with lemon, a cocktail sauce and a delicious mignonette. My friend also tried a local canned cocktail, Dasch seltzer, that was excellent...not too sweet, lots of blueberry flavor. I can't wait to go back!
