Nothing special about this place. Average Mexican food. Average service. Average prices. This place came highly recommended but none of us in the group are sure why. Some of the best fish tacos I've ever had! The catch of the day was ahí tuna, so we got the fish tacos, which feature the catch of the day. I ordered mine seared, and they were perfect! The salsa and pico were amazing, as were the homemade chips! We would eat here again, and may just do so before we leave next week! read more

Came by here for an early dinner and went with the spinach salad with blackened fish and al pastor nachos. The spinach salad was nice but the star was the blackened fish - cooked to a nice medium rare. Really solid salad, which I would not have expected at a Mexican restaurant. The Nachos al Pastor were good, but the meat did not seem to be spit grilled. The meat was fresh from a flat-top grill and both tender and juicy. Service here was prompt. read more

We come here at least once whenever we visit Kauai. They have a lovely outdoor bar area and make a nice, strong house margarita. My partner loves the chicken mole enchiladas and I have to try something different every time. My favs so far are the chile relleno and the camarones diabla. Ignore the occasional feral chicken, and the traffic on Kuhio, and enjoy the view of the goats grazing in the coconut grove to the south. Have a second margarita, you are on vacation. read more

Wow never thought I would find Mexican food this good on the island. Margaritas were amazing, seafood fajitas were absolutely delicious. Fish tacos 5/5 the Mahi tasted so fresh and the Cole slaw compliments it very well. Green enchiladas were tasty as well . I have to say I was impressed and kind of sad to say this was some of the best food we had all week and we just went to the Bull shed restaurant the day before and spend over $300. A very loud hand clap for for this place I must say it's a hidden gem! A must stop if you come to the island !!! This is not a good place to come if you're vegan. Their rice has chicken stock and they don't offer another option so you're limited to beans and veggies. Anything fried also shares a fryer with the meat items, which they informed us before ordering. The food is ok, nothing great. The service was friendly. read more

This place was incredible. We sat at the bar while doing laundry next door. Did not expect to be served the best margarita of my life. Food was excellent, had the fresh fish delivered that morning, super fast service. We came back a second time, sans laundry, for a quick lunch and again we were served a treat. Nice patio seating and good service, but there food was mediocre at best. The bar drinks were awful. Fair warning--they do charge for anything extra that you order (cheese for fajitas, etc), but I get it. Might be a good idea to mention it, as some people might be upset about that. Family atmosphere, and seem to be run by good people. The execution just leaves a lot to be desired. If you are on the patio and lucky out to be right next to the field, there is a family of goats and birds that live there. When we were there, the goats all had babies. This restaurant gets a four star due to the amazing service, which was quick, friendly and professional. The carnitas were really good as was the fish in the seafood burrito. The beans and rice were so-so. The standard blended margarita was delicious! We sat outside and even though this is on a main road it was decent seating, as the sun went down the parrots were going a bit nuts but it was fun to listen to for 10-15 minutes. That said, I would suggest eating inside at night because the bugs were out of control but you are on a tropical island. read more

What knocks it down 2 stars is the horrible parking lot with very tight spaces & no room to even find a space & the ambiance -well, there isn't any! Extremely noisy & you can tell this place used to be a sushi place. I mean, come on, if you are a Mexican place, decorate it as such! I was sad when they moved locations years ago, scared when Covid shut down a lot of businesses, but through it all I'm so glad Monico's has survived. I love their veggie burrito. Their seafood burrito with crema is the most delicious seafood option ever. I highly recommend the surf n turf if you like meat (it comes with carnitas) and seafood. Their Chile relleno is delicious but only one pepper instead of two (I'm used to two at other places, but I'm not sure which is typical). Their al pastor is very crispy and delicious and decadent. Also, their fajitas are delicious - the vegetables come out especially flavorful and I don't know the secret. It's run by a nice family who also support lots of other restaurants and businesses. Setting them out and about is always a pleasure. Also, try any of the margaritas. My favorite is the lilikoi. read more

You certainly don't imagine yourself eating at a Mexican restaurant in Kauai when there are so many seafood and Hawaiian food options around you. But one night we found ourselves here (it was one of the last options open for us). What a wonderful destined choice?! This restaurant blew our mines. I ordered the surf and turf and asked for a side salad instead of the rice and beans, which they obliged without any issues. It was amazing!! My son enjoyed his burrito and we had a vegetarian in our party that enjoyed her dish too. I didn't personally try the free chips and salsa but one person in our party said the salsa was pretty disappointing in flavor. I last reviewed Monico's in 2014 and a few things have changed since then. Firstly Monico's has an excellent location on the Kuhio Hiway, and in their own stand-alone building. The one thing that hasn't changed is the quality of the food. We have been back to Monico's several times since my original review and each time we go, we have a large portion and the quality of the food is fantastic. Go for the mole, stay for everything else. The fresh fish tacos, enchiladas and mojado style burritos are great... but again, best mole in the pacific islands. You have to go to Oaxaca to get better mole. read more
