Monkey Bar Steak & Seafood First Impressions I stopped by specifically for the prime rib after hearing it was among the best in the area. Since no one was seated inside, I chose the patio. Although it was less formal than the dining room, it had a great atmosphere. One drawback was that smoking is allowed at the bar, and the odor carries into the patio area. My beer arrived quickly, but I had to flag down the bartender to place my food order. With only about eight customers in the restaurant, I expected more attentive service. I also noticed the bartender checking his phone frequently. What I Ordered * King-cut end piece of prime rib, cooked medium-well * Mashed potatoes * Mixed vegetables My Thoughts The prime rib was enormous, cooked perfectly to medium-well, and very flavorful. The mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables also tasted good. Unfortunately, the temperature of the meal was disappointing from the first bite. The center of the prime rib was cold, while the edges were only warm. The mashed potatoes were also just warm. Only the mixed vegetables and au jus arrived hot. Seriously consistent, seriously friendly staff and well, seriously good dinner. We had a party of three, sat inside due to them allowing smoking on the outside area (which is a bummer). The inside is more formal than sitting outside with both high-tables and normal height tables. It's also less noisy if you're wanting to chat with your table mates. We had an appetizer - onion rings, it's a nice size order to share with your table. One of the partyhad the fried grouper sandwich with a choice of coleslaw. Another of our party had the hamburger with potato salad and I have the Blackened Grouper Panini with potato salad. Everyone enjoyed what they had and enjoyed the choices of side, either the potato salad or the coleslaw. Last year I had the coleslaw, which I thought was good. We love going here to have a good steak or what's on specials however I have to say I was a little disappointed we went for St Patrick's Day and it's just too much chaos and the food was actually not good which is very sad but if you ever get a chance to try there potatoes leek soup is off the charts outstanding!. Always a good time at the Monkey Bar! Food is diverse enough that everyone can find something on the menus! The bar is full stock and can usually find some entertainment in the corner. My last visit was a lunch/ early dinner so the place was a little less crowded which was nice ordered a oriental chicken salad that was huge ate it for 2 days the appetizer onion rings were very good! My fellow patrons had a chicken sandwich with fries nice portion and a steak sandwich with tater tots (also made it home for a 2nd meal) there were a few soups but sorry to say I don't recall which ones but they were enjoyed. It was the best meal we have had throughout our entire vacation! The portions are huge and so so good! Please visit! Had been wanting to try the Monkey bar out for some time, but every time we went there it was way too busy. We finally went there on a Wednesday night in the off season, and I have so say I was VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! The hostess was very nice and sat us at a table under the canvas roof in the bar area. My wife and I were shocked to see how many people were smoking there, ashtrays everywhere and a cloud of nasty cigarette smoke in the air! Can't wait for the new law to kick in this summer to ban smoking in "outside" spaces. So,, on the menu they had "dinner for 2",,, a salad, shrimp appetizer, and a choice of entrees for $50. A pretty good deal, so we went for it. We got a very small salad, appetizer,,,, a few shrimp that were just OK, and I ordered the "bone in ribeye" steak. When my steak came, there was no bone in it, and it wasn't a ribeye at all, it was a cheaper NY sirloin. When I told the waitress that this was not a ribeye, and there was no bone in it, she said she would ask the kitchen staff if they made a mistake plating my food. When she came back, she gave me a lame excuse that they had run out of bone in ribeye steaks, and that why it didn't have a bone. I again told her that is wasn't even a ribeye, and she had no comeback for that. On the table next to us, several people got the same steak, and they were also cheap NY sirloins. Seemed like a bate and switch!!! They had karaoke that night, and that was just ok,,, a lot of older people that shouldn't quit their day jobs! My God, where to begin this review. FIrst, the food. We've been coming here regularly for the last 3 years after moving to Cape Coral for our retirement, and never...NEVER...have we had a bad meal. The portions are large, the quality is 5 star most items, and there's enough of a variety so you don't start getting into "only a few items" to choose from. The pricing, though a bit steep, is still fair and not a deal breaker. I've eaten less and a higher price down here quite often. Finally, the service. Only one word sums it up...Kristen. Our group has reached the point to when we call in our reservation, we make sure she is our server. She has the best combination, personality and humor that we rarely see in other places. So we were 5 minutes late for our reservation. The server who greeted us was really nice ,and then an older man came over and rudely told us he canceled our reservation. The place was half full, but whatever. Then he starts slinging six menus on a table. We stand there dumbfounded as it's just me and my husband. Thank goodness he was not our server. We had Jafe and he was awesome. The seafood was very good and they make a mean Pina colada. I had a grouper wrap and it was delicious but immense. For a Cape Coral restaurant, it was okay. I ordered the king cut prime rib, med rare. When served, it was almost cold. It looked med rare because it was pink/red on the surface. When I cut into it, it was done. Not med rare, or medium. It was done! I've never had that happen with a piece of prime rib before. Two salads were ordered, they were oaky. Two pasta dishes were also ordered, I brought them both home in a box because the children said they didn't taste good (chicken carbonara and the seafood medley). Both were tasty leftovers. They also come with tartar sauce, but you won't need it. They have daily specials from 4 tacos for $4 on Tuesday to all you can eat fish & chips on Friday, plus a prime rib special On Saturday. The table we were seated at was way too small for two people and the plates were too large for the table also. The menu is quite intense and the food is plenty to select from. The cocktail menu has many choices. The lemon drop was very good! Good sized patio, friendly staff, and good food. I came here with a group of 6 on a Saturday and we all left happy. I sipped on some IPA's and had the blackened grouper panini. It was good, but I wasn't blown away. Everything else I tried was very good however, including the grouper bites appetizer (which was huge) The patio is big with plenty of TV's and a stage for live music or karaoke. I will start off on a positive by saying the only person holding this place afloat today was Kyle the bartender. He was busting his ass to make sure people were taken care of while he was the only one behind the bar. On the other hand, the service/interactions with the servers was atrocious. Our first encounter was getting yelled at by a woman server with dreads that there was a line and we needed to wait to be seated. We proceeded to stand there for 15 minutes without being acknowledged again (we were the only party waiting). We waited as 2 servers continued to walk past us and completely ignore our presence. I am very understanding that everywhere is short staffed and have no problem waiting, but we were completely ignored and not even greeted/spoken to. The same server then proceeded to yell at an old man that was walking slowly that she needed to get by him, implying he needed to get out of her way. I could not believe how rude she treated the old man who was just trying to get to the exit after he finished dining. We got drinks at the bar and never ended up ordering food, so I cannot provide insight on the food. I ordered their grouper sandwich with the fish fried and upgraded for $2 to onion rings. The fish and rings were perfectly cooked -- both in a light batter. The sandwich came with lettuce and a tomato slice open faced on a hamburger like bun. In a small cup alongside was tartar sauce. The fish was good. I wondered whether it was really grouper for only $9.95, but it was white and flaky. My husband had their meatloaf sandwich which came with a brown gravy and a side of French fries.
