Dishonest, Incompetent, and Costly Rip-Off I took my car to this shop for service and regret it every single day. They are a textbook example of shady sales tactics combined with very poor mechanical work. They billed me for 5 hours of labor on a job that took only 3 hours. They completely failed to perform the wheel alignment properly after performing maintenance that required an alignment, yet they charged me for an alignment. Another mechanic later confirmed the front was way off and they hadn't touched the rear! When I asked them to correct it (since they had promised a follow-up realignment with the initial service), they made up an excuse that the alignment needed time to "settle" and refused to fix it. One month later, the toe on my front wheels was so far off that it completely destroyed my tires! I had to spend $1,300 on a new set of tires plus a proper alignment at a competent shop (I should have gone to in the first place) To top it off, they charged a 500% markup on parts -- five times what they should cost. This place overcharges, underperforms, and leaves customers with expensive damage. Avoid them at all costs. They wasted my time, my money, and damaged my vehicle. Never again. read more

SCAM ALERT. Be very careful bringing a car here, especially a nicer one that makes it look you have money to spend. I don't know how else to explain that they wanted to charge me $1600 when I brought in our car for a $21 NYS inspection. They said rotors were rusted and must be changed to pass inspection. That was peculiar as the car was at the BMW shop just a few weeks ago and they had no such issue (and they are not squeamish about suggesting expensive services at the first sign of potential degradation) and BMW actually changed the rotors last year (!!) I left the Monro inspection, took the long drive to BMW dealership the following week and it passed the inspection no problem. read more

My wife and I have been taking our cars to this Monro location for the last 2+ years. During that time we have had oil changes x 4/year (2 for each car) as well as putting snow tires on and then off each year. With each service, Monro has stated they performed a general inspection, as well as took a look at our brakes. It even states it on the invoices we receive from them as being completed. Every time I was told there was nothing else to do. Our last service was spring of this year (2024) when we had our snow tires off and received an oil change. Recently one of our cars was lurching whenever we were accelerating or stopping. Since I was worried about a major issue and our car was relatively newer and still under dealer warranty, I took it to the dealer for them to inspect. They found that not only were we in desperate need of new brakes, but actually ALL FOUR ROTORS WERE RUSTED AND DELAMINATED with BRAKE PADS SEIZED ON THE ROTORS. This is not a problem that happens overnight and surely should have been caught PRIOR to us needing to purchase new rotors and pads. Not to mention the damage done to the other components of the car that had to work against seized brake pads/rotors during each acceleration. If they were doing the inspections (which I suspect they were not), there really is no excuse for missing this. Kicking myself for not taking a look, lesson learned. Tried to upsell me for an entire brake job on my truck by failing my inspection. Told me that front and rear pads were completely gone and all rotors were badly worn/damaged, "chunks missing" was the quote. Immediately picked up my truck and took it to a trusted mechanic and he confirmed that rear pads were worn but not completely shot and that fronts are good and all 4 rotors are in great shape. These sleazeballs could have just said that I needed rear pads and I would have gladly had them do that. But instead they will be reported to the NYS Attorney General and BBB. read more

The worst case of attempted theft, lying and poor service I have ever experienced. I worked in auto service for 30 years. Now retired and at the mercy of charlatans like this. Friday night I drove through a deep puddle off Park Ave post a rainstorm. A short time later developed a loud cyclical chucking in my left front wheel. Either the caliper came loose or something was wedged in the wheel. It was loud and dangerous. I limped home and brought it to this Monro as they opened Saturday morning. I explained the situation and asked them to remove the wheel and inspect the caliper and wheel. Tyler said they were busy but would get to it. I left it for coffee at Speedway and had someone pick me up. After ten minutes or so i saw they pulled it in! So I walked back. The tech was looking the vehicle over. I told them I appreciated checking it over but needed to know what was happening in the LF wheel. Tyler walked away and ignored my request. His tech continued looking over my van. I left with my ride to await the call. It was 8am. By 12:30 I hadn't heard anything. I called and was told they were putting my estimate together. When I asked about the LF wheel he said they hadn't pulled it off yet!! We hung up and he called shortly after. Well, it needed front control arms, tie rods, rear shocks, right rear spring, a left front hub bearing, possibly more. Cost? Around $3000. I asked what they found in the left front wheel, he said they hadn't pulled it yet because they needed my permission (lie #1). I told them twice to pull the wheel. That's why it was there. He said any of the items he described could cause the noise (lie #2). I told him that the van might need all that work but none of it except maybe the bearing would cause the problem. Tyler ( I think that was his name) became aggravated and wouldn't agree that their diagnosis and repair list was ridiculous for the sound from the LF. I said do nothing and picked it up. They gave me no receipt or any paperwork, just my key. The sound was bad as before and sounded down right dangerous. Flashers on I started to drive home. The Muffler Shop was close to my home and I stopped there. I explained the situation to them and they agreed to try to check it and I walked home. The kicker: The Muffler Shop called an hour or so later and found the lug nuts on the left front wheel had come loose and the wheel was chucking. Yes it could have come off and...well you know. They torqued all lugs, checked the vehicle over, yes it needed some work. But it was fine to drive. I've driven it 3 days now. Cost $0. Guess who's going to get all my work in the future? Monro Muffler exhibited every despicable behavior service repair shops have the capacity to show. Directly ignoring a customer's service request and their main concern to blatantly lie and use the problem to sell as much as they can. They endangered my vehicle, my health and those on the road around me. Loose lug nuts? Good lord... Kudos, The Muffler Shop, my new repair facility. read more

This is specific to the Penfield location. My go-to for the quick stuff as they can always fit me in quickly. No service complaints, and they tracked down tires they had inadvertently tossed. I understand we are in a pandemic. But there's no excuse for this. Husband scheduled an appointment, shows up, and was told appt was not in system. After showing them his email confirmation they said they couldn't fit sorry. Ok, not ideal but no big deal, they offered first thing the following week to get him in an out. Shows up, was told well you can't wait for your car and it will be six or seven hours... how long for an inspection that was scheduled? So understandably annoyed he had to walk home thankfully only a mile as everyone else were at their essential jobs. After around hour 6 he called to check status and was told that they "weren't gonna get to it today" when probed got snippy and acted like it was crazy to expect a scheduled inspection to get done in a 6 hour time frame. They were polite and professional getting my car in as their bay doors opened and out well before my desired timeline. We were in the area from Staten Island and needed to drive home the next day, when we started experiencing brake trouble. It was 3pm on a Saturday afternoon and we really didn't think we'd be able to get home the next day. The mechanics at Monro found that one of the calipers had broken and we had rotor and brake pad issues. Not only did they have all the parts in stock, but they had 2 mechanics work on it and got us out of there in less than 2 hours. Went in for an oil change and asked to give me a price estimate on brakes. They came back and told me $950! and that I needed extra work done to pass inspection. Took my car to another shop down the road and asked them to give me an estimate. $250. I don't know where the $700 overcharge came in but do not trust Monro Muffler now. read more

So I get an alignment at Store #132 in Penfield on 441 and 250 mind you this was a 3 hour alignment with no rust to worry about since I had it all apart to replace a broken tie rod. I have a driver take it out for snow plowing service and on Baird by the S-turn the shackle snaps in half and my truck ends up in a snow bank. I thought I needed the tie rod that wasn't replaced and ask Sam the manager if he can get me in on Sunday. He tells me just like everyone that calls that I would need to "drop it off" and he will see if he can get to it, he's all backed up etc. etc. When I see what's broke and see clearly it's from not properly putting my truck back together. I call him back and he tows it over. Him and his tech then start to try and take the plow off. I explain to the tech over the phone how to drop the plow and offer to help if they pick me up from my house down the street. They never pick me up so I assume they figure it out. I get a second call from Sam in the afternoon that he still hasn't got the plow off which is 9' wide with the wings and in the shop. He goes on to tell me that the shackle isn't available at Advance (blatant lie I found out later) and would have to wait until the next day for the repair on my truck. I paid out $600 in labor to have my guys plow 200 driveways. An extra 72 that normally I plow myself. I stopped over Monday morning and dropped the plow for him in the shop in front of the lift. I notice that they pulled the pins off the feet which if I hooked up again my plow would have fallen off the truck while driving with these pins removed. At 2:30 I get a call that Sam wants me to put the plow back on and my truck was done. I arrive as soon as I can at 3:15. I have been waiting since the day before and the first thing I notice is they moved all my sand bags from the axles and threw them in the front of my bed. Sam tells me the shackle just rotted in half. I pull out my picture and point out they never secured the bracket that keeps the shackle from turning off the tie rod. Sam gets upset and tells me that's not what happened and starts telling me to get the plow and truck out of there. It's a 20 minute process to hook up the plow, take the wings off, put the wings on, and move all my sand bags back to where they were. Then I go to plug my phone in and find that my iPhone charger that's 3 weeks old and works perfectly (and says Jay Only in sharpie) has been switched with some other charger that doesn't function. I called Sam again and asked him to tell whoever switched my charger to give it back. First he tells me Travis has an iPhone and then tells me no one has an iPhone. Every time I've been in there to do anything my needs are not met or something bad happens. I brought my wife's van in for a tire balance and oil change. I didn't get a tire balance and Chris the Assistant manager tells me to drop it off again and he will do it another day (I didn't have another day). I brought a plow truck there a few months ago to get an exhaust estimate and an oil change. It sat there for three weeks and Sam locked the doors with no door keys and never got an estimate for the exhaust when it was picked up. On each and every visit I asked about my brakes, tires, and if I needed a rotate and no one had ANY information on any of those measurements. I paid $538 for a Timken wheel bearing and a CV shaft on my Silverado. The CV shaft went bad and I wanted another one. Sam tells ME to call advance and get it warrantied myself. If this kind of thing happens to me on a regular basis what is happening to all the other customers and how are they treated. I'm all done with Monro. I've lost all respect for Sam. I can't believe he would argue with me when I'm clearly right. Something needs to be done. On top of all that the last tie rod is loose now and they did the alignment anyway. I'm at a loss for how that shop has gone from a trusted place to bring my cars and trucks to a place where no one, including management, has any idea how to earn anyone's trust. read more

I have been taking my car to Monro Muffler in Penfield for many years now, but I think I just took it there for the last time. I have all my oil changes done there, tire rotations, regular maintenance, etc. I have always been able to trust the guys there that they wouldn't treat me like a stupid girl who didn't know better. Unfortunately, that trust has been broken. I brought my car in for NY State inspection knowing that the possibility for safety failure existed because the back brakes needed to be done. They said they could pass it based on how much was left on the pads but they were going to fail it because they were "wedged in" to the calipers. I think they thought they were putting me between a rock and a hard place and I was going to tell them to replace my brakes, but my boyfriend had already planned on doing them. He told me it was going to be a good 2 hour job at least because he couldn't move the pads by hand. It cost $180 for parts and my boyfriend was done in less than an hour and a half, saying he didn't have a single issue with the pads. I made an appointment online to bring it back in and showed up and they told me they didn't have any record of the appointment. I agreed to bring it back the next day and when I showed up they had no idea what they were reinspecting it for. I told him the back brakes. He came out a few minutes later with my windshield wiper in his hand. He told me he couldn't pass the inspection. I could not believe they were going this far to try to make a buck. I told him that I had just had the car in a week ago and they didn't tell me I needed to replace the windshield wipers to pass or else I would have replaced those as well. He told me he wouldn't pass it. So I looked at him and told him to replace it but that he better not come back and tell me he found anything else. The only reason they're getting two stars is because the manager gave me the wiper blade for free which is the least he could do for all the hassle and bs. It's really unfortunate that places like this cannot be trusted to just do the work with honesty and integrity. Thanks for letting me down Monro. **Update** For the last year I took my car to this same Monro location for oil changes. Prior, I always took it to the Kia dealer. My car started to leak oil all over my garage and driveway. My boyfriend brought the car to his house to find out what was going on. He discovered the oil filter had never been changed. It was a Kia oil filter! It was so clogged that oil was spilling over the top causing the leak. There was engine oil all over everything under the hood. I took my Honda to this place for NY state inspection and they failed it saying fog lights were not working. Then I contacted NYDMV to verify regulations which they have published in their web-site and they reconfirmed that fog lights are not subjected to inspection I called John Holz Honda where I bought the vehicle and they also argued that failed fog lights would be failed the inspection and further they said even in the previous week they failed 2 vehicles due to fog lights were not working. Then I called Dick IDE Honda Penfield where they confirmed NYDMV regulations and passed the inspection in the same condition which is fog lights were not working. I complained to NYDMV about this misappropriation of regulations and awaiting the results. read more

I usually go to the Fairport location and have always had great service. This review is for the Penfield location. I had a situation where 4 of 5 lug nuts came off my wife's car on her way to work on a Saturday morning. This was totally on me for not checking the torque after changing her tires and luckily nobody got hurt. I was able to get the tire back on but one of the lug nuts would not tighten. I called the Penfield Monro and requested to have all of the studs on that wheel replaced. They told me they were completely booked up and if I left the car there, they should be able to get to it by the end of day on Sunday. Monday morning came without a call from Monro so I had to take Uber to work. When I called, they seemed annoyed and stated that they were extremely busy. I asked them to call me with a status later in the day and was told that I'd have to call them because they were too busy and their manager called in sick. On the way home, I called and they said the car was ready. When I got there they handed me the keys and stated no charge because all they had to do was tighten the lug nuts. (three full days to tighten lug nuts!) I told them I was uncomfortable driving it without all of the studs replaced like I requested and they just shrugged it off. When I got home, I checked all of the lug nuts and one of them was still loose and would not tighten, nor could I get it off. If they really tightened all of the lug nuts, they surely must have noticed this problem, but because they were "busy", they let me drive off with this potentially dangerous condition. I will never go back to this place again, they are unsupervised and not to be trusted. read more

Brutal. I dropped my car off at 7am for a simple oil change and tire rotation. By 2pm I hadn't heard from them so I called and they told me it wasn't even in the shop yet. 1.5 hours later at 3:30pm they called me to tell me that the rear brakes needed new rotors, pads and the calipers were completely locked up. I told them to just do the oil change and tire rotation. 2 days later, on Monday, I took the vehicle to my trusted mechanic and they informed me that although the rear brakes needed pads and rotors, the calipers were just fine. They also told me that the O-ring was broken on my last oil change (which was Monro Muffler 2 days earlier) and they repaired it. So, not only did Monro lie and try to get me to buy into new calipers (about $300) when they were completely unnecessary, they also broke the O-ring on my oil change and took 8.5 hours for a simple oil change and tire rotation. Very, very poor performance. Never again. read more
