I went to Schoen Auto today for the first time. It was only for a car inspection, but I feel this will be my go-to garage from now on. Unlike other garages, there were no fear tactics used to try to tell me I need new tires, or brakes, or whatever. Every interaction that I've had with them so far - phone and in person - has been professional and respectful. While waiting for my car, I listened to the interactions with other customers. I have honestly never heard auto service people speak as kindly and thoughtfully to customers. Also like other independent garages, there is an actual waiting area, with multiple tables, chairs, a window that allows you to look into the garage, a maintained bathroom, and a selection of Keurig coffees. Disregard the couple of bad reviews that have been submitted. Customers can be jerks and there are some people that are never satisfied. It seems that Schoen Auto's genuine philosophy is to do what is necessary to make things right with those rare unsatisfied customers. This was my first service visit and they exceeded my expectations.....very customer oriented, scheduled me in a few days, provided a loaner car and were very good at explaining & documenting what they found as the cause of various emergency engine/transmission warning lights on my dashboard. This was very helpful in following up with Van Bortel for extended warranty coverage of a $1600 CVT transmission problem that was well-known by Subaru & its dealerships. Definitely not a fan of this place... I was in Rochester visiting my girlfriend's family when the windshield wiper on the driver's side detached on the inside. My girlfriend's mother had a coupon so I decided to check this place out as it had pretty good reviews (although I didn't notice all the reviews that are somehow blocked as not recommended on this site?). 9:00am: Upon entering, they were extremely nice as I explained exactly what was wrong with my car. From there it went downhill. They told me that it would cost $50 bucks to just look at the problem (which I've never had to pay for in Boston), but figuring I had a $20 dollar coupon and was short on time, I obliged. They said they'd call me around noon with a quote. Around 1:00pm, I hadn't heard anything so I showed up on site. Looking a little flustered, they hurried my car into the garage and put it up on a lift (remember I only asked them to look at the windshield wiper). After an hour of sitting in the waiting room, they came out with a whole slew of problems - many of which I had recently replaced or fixed. In addition, to reconnect the little piece on the inside for my windshield wiper they quoted me at $255... I politely declined and after using my $20 coupon, somehow shoveled out 48$ after tax (God only knows how that adds up). A week later I paid my mechanic 30 bucks to fix the problem in Boston. read more

My college age daughter was taking her first major summer road trip by herself to visit friends. She was staying in Rochester and driving to Buffalo for the day. 15 minutes into the drive her car stopped on the side of I-90. She called for a tow and I called to find a shop to take it to. Lucky for me, I found Schoen Place Auto online. Jeff was super helpful right from the start. He contacted my daughter and walked her through the process of what was going to happen. When she arrived, he set her up with a rental car and kept in contact with both me and her. The next day, after taking a good look at the car, he worked with the insurance company for the inspection. It turns out, a rock or some road debris had kicked up under the car, punctured the oil pan, all the oil had drained out and the engine had seized up. It was a total loss. Jeff and the team at Schoen took care of everything with the insurance company. It could not have been a better process. The best part for me though was knowing that my daughter was in a safe environment even when she was 600 miles from home. With so much happening with the car and not knowing anyone who could help up there, we had to blindly trust someone. Finding Schoen was like striking gold. Finding out that this total loss would be covered by insurance, that was awesome too. I would recommend them, without any hesitation, for honest and friendly car repair. A neighbor recommended Schoen Auto so we took my daughter's car there for a new alternator and battery. The service was friendly and fast. There were a few issues after the repair and they took her vehicle back in and completed some additional work at no charge so that the vehicle was operating at top performance! Everything was explained from start to finish and I never felt like I was being pressured into anything. This is the kind of place I wish I had access to throughout my driving career. As a budget conscious driver with kids in college (who also drive) it's important to be able to trust the people working on your car. Repairs and general maintenance can cost but it's great to know that the work being performed is necessary and important. Jerry, Jeff and the mechanics at Schoen Place Auto are experts and provide the highest quality repairs. They are prompt and deliver the car when promised. Their loaner program can be very helpful (and the price is right). I also appreciate their candor for repairs that will be due in the future but don't have to be completed now. Jerry and his crew do a fabulous job, and the level of customer service is outstanding. I had one complicated problem that took a long time to diagnose and fix -- they didn't charge me anything beyond the first visit, even though I came back several times just to have them check on it. Jerry called me at home to follow up just to make sure it wasn't giving me any more trouble. They always make sure my car is in tip-top condition before a long trip, even if it means squeezing me in at the last minute. I really appreciate that they don't push me towards the most expensive option, instead they tell me what really needs doing and what can wait.
