Another great recommendation from my son! We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and directed to our table. Our waters, chips and salsa were served quickly. The chips were crisp, seasoned just right and the salsa was delicious; perfectly spiced! My cheese chili rellenos were a little burnt on one end but the rest of quite tasty. The beans and squash dish were great. My son's burrito was huge and he throughly devoured it. I like the layout of the restaurant; nothing fancy but very comfortable. Food needs more flavor, and portions are smaller than other new mexican restaurants. I've sat down inside and have had to go orders and always felt a bit hungry after eating my meals. Typically, I have leftovers, which is nice to have the next day but not here. This feels like it is geared toward older folks who prefer to have smaller plates that have mild chile. For the price, I could get the same meal elsewhere and get more full with half the food. I definitely like to support local restaurants, but if the prices were lower, I would consider coming back otherwise I'll choose other places in town who have more flavor and bigger portions. read more

My family has been going to Monroe's for 37 years that stopped last night. They used to have the best calabacitas, but for some reason they quit using the spice they used to use on it. When I asked about it, they told me oh the spice was on there even though you couldn't see it or taste it. They slso messed up my order. I ordered a beef burrito and they brought me three beef tacos. How do you confuse a burrito for a taco? They were very rude about the whole situation. After 37 years of being a regular, even supporting them during COVID I will not be returning. read more

3 Stars = A Okay! I think I might get some heat for this review because Monroe's has a big fan base with a lot of regulars. The food is good, but nothing was memorable nor did anything stand out. I thought the green Chile was okay. The pozole was alright. They didn't give options on a size and the bowl is pretty small. I got the breakfast burrito which was good. I appreciated they didn't fill it with a bunch of hash browns and it actually had eggs/meat. If you're in the area for sure check it out. Great place for families and large groups! read more

I was totally disappointed. A friend suggested we go there and that the food was very good. I am a bit leary about what's considered "good" in Albuquerque so I picked a "safe" option, chicken tacos. When I say that the chicle was so dry that it c have choked a horse I mean it was horrible. I was so disappointed. Taco Bell would have been a huge improvement over this authentic New Mexican quinine. No one ever came by the table to ask us if the food was okay so I just kept silent, paid my bill with a 20% tip for this disappointing fare and put Monroe's on my "do not waste your hard earned money " list. read more

Fun dining. I always eat too much chips and salsa and we always order yet more chips and salsa to take home. They have their own bottled salsa and chili sauces for purchase. I usually order tacos and my husband usually orders enchiladas. We've never been disappointed! Service is great. read more

So disappointing. I had the creamy green chicken chile. There were some dried out pieces of white meat, a few small pieces of green chile smothered in Cheez Wiz. Been coming for 4 years here and today had the worst experience. I remember when the sopapillas were actually included in any plates when ordered food and was asked if I wanted one or tortilla. Today was different they actually charge for them and manager was arguing that it's been a change in the menus. In the menu does not say that it's an upcharge for one. Best Mexican food I've ever had. Green chili is amazing. Serving size is always a lot. The chips and salsa is a flavorful classic. Servers are nice and polite. The dining area was clean and well lit. This is a Mexican restaurant. The waiter asked if we wanted chips and salsa. Of course we did. He did not mention that they were not free as is the custom at most Mexican restaurants. When I got the check there was a charge for $5.50 for a handful of chips and a small dish of salsa. All of the Mexican restaurants I frequent provide complimentary chips and salsa. Decent NM grub here. As it turns out, I'd been to their sister location in downtown ABQ about a year ago and liked it okay. So the pluses first: . I really liked how their menu is not overwhelming. They stick to the basics. Super friendly service. Quick service. Salsa was easy to eat - not too hot. The cons: I said "yes" when the server asked if I wanted chips and salsa. The basket of chips was appropriately smaller since I was dining by myself. But I didn't realize I was going to be charged $4.95 for a very small order of chips and salsa. I felt ripped off by this. Pre-packaged hard taco shells? The chile relleno was excellent - great batter, quite large, and I ordered it christmas-style. Their red chile is smooth and creamy - really delicious. They only serve wine and beer here - which is not meant to be a con. But I spent $24 for one taco, a relleno, one beer, and chips/salsa. Good food, just expensive for what it is. For the most part Monroe's had solid New Mexican food. The chile is always just right (not too hot that you can't enjoy it and not too mild). We haven't had anything we didn't like. I like that the employees work as a team, so you will frequently be asked if you need anything or how everything is. Whenever we've gone, Hubby and the kids' drinks are never less than half empty, as someone is always making the rounds. Typically chips and salsa as well as sopaipillas are included in the price of the meal at most New Mexican restaurants, but they're extra at Monroe's. When you're paying $17 for a taco plate (3 tacos), adding ~$6 for a basket of chips and salsa plus the additional cost for a sopaipilla--not to mention the cost of a drink--you're looking to spend $30 for one person. I get inflation and higher employee wages factor into the higher prices on the menu, but New Mexican food isn't really expensive to make. read more

Ordered take out and one of our three orders was wrong. Received pork instead of beef in a stuffed sopiapilla. After contacting Monroe's they advised they would remake it while as I headed back (~ 7 minutes away). Upon arriving, it was not ready so I waited - 5 minutes. When I returned home, I was informed an hair was found in an order which was a huge concern and unfortunately there was another hair found in the replacement order. This is a popular place that I'm barely getting to try today. Let's start with the service. When we walked in we were seated immediately and given drinks, chips and salsa. Our waiter was friendly and helpful with the menu and recommendations. I got the double chile relleno plate stuffed with carne adovada and ground beef. My son got their famous GCCB and it looked great. He said it was really good but that he should've got the double. My daughter is now a big fan of Monroe's just because of their carne asada fries that she liked so much. Why 4 star and not 5? Although the food was tasty it was a little pricey for the portion size. Our waiter kind of forgot about us after awhile and we never got refills and our check took a long time to arrive. Other than that I would eat here again no problem. I had the opportunity to visit Monroe's and I will say I was pleased with this visit. It has been sometime since I had some New Mexican food, and this was quite delicious. They started us off with a serving of chips and salsa, which was free as per the custom. I ordered a carne asada chimichanga plate, and the meat was tender and well seasoned.The rice could have been better. The service was great as they were attentive to our needs. The best thing here imo is the Green Chilli Cheeseburger! It's bomb! I'm not the biggest fan of their mexican food in general though. The mini sopapilla desert plate is amazing as well! Good luck figuring out the hours though. It seems everytime we have tried to meet here in the past year it's closed, or closed for dine in, and only doing takeout. Not sure what the deal is. We showed up at 11 on a Tuesday, 1st in the door, requested to eat on patio, by the time we left the parking lot was full, this place was very popular. Ms Gilbert was an outstanding server. This was our 1st time & she was very helpful. Her suggestion of Raspberry tea was great. She quickly handled our needs. We felt the chicken in the tacos & refried beans could have used more seasoning. Only reas we didn't give 5. We are big Mexican food eaters & have been for decades, so please review others comments. I've always been a fan of Monroe's but hadn't been out much due to the pandemic. Enjoyed a nice lunch on the patio with a friend from out-of-town. I had the combo plate and loved it. I really like their tacos -very tasty. Great service and a nice atmosphere, plus great outdoor seating for those of us wanting to avoid getting sick. We had a really great waiter who was attentive but also let us just sit and talk for an extended time since the weather was nice and they weren't super busy. For some tasty food, head on over to Monroe's, a locally owned and operated business. They also have great carryout with its own entrance for easy access. The management has to be good, as it reflects on how the staff carry themselves. The wait staff work cooperatively to make sure all parties are taken care of. Calavacitas Fajitas I had the calvacitas fajitas with grilled calavacitas, bell peppers and onions, Spanish rice, Puerto Rican beans, tortillas, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, and sour cream. I wanted a good green chile cheeseburger near where I was while in Albuquerque and came upon numerous recommendations for the GCCB at Monroe's. I decided to try it. Upon ordering the GCCB, they asked if I wanted thousand island dressing on the burger. I thought this was odd because a good GCCB should be able to stand on its own, so I said no thanks. I also ordered red chile cheese fries because I love the earthy and smoky goodness of red New Mexican chile. Service was good and fast so I appreciated that, and that's why I'm giving them some stars. When the burger came, I understood why they use thousand island. The burger was pretty dry. I guess the dressing is to hide that. And the red chile was weird. It's not the typical New Mexican red chile at all. It's like some weird orange gravy. Red chile should be a deep dark red. And it also tasted like they added some Tabasco sauce. It had a strong vinegary taste. I didn't like it. Earlier in the day, I ate some lovely authentic New Mexican red chile sauce during breakfast. The flavor, earthy, smoky and so damn good, was still fresh in my memory. The red chile presented here at Monroe's was definitely not that. read more

Go out of business! They have a decent product but their Shipping and Management have a serious attitude problem. They do not honor broken or bad product shipment. I had two bad shipments from them. They blamed the problem on me or FedEx. They refused to ship more product to my address. I'm not responsible for shipping, that's on them. When I emailed and called them about the two bad shipments, they were rude and defensive. Shipping is costly and the customer pays for shipping, not Monroe's. Terrible people to deal with. read more

I recently dined at Monroe's for the first time in ages. I was surprised how much had changed. The chips & salsa are no longer free with every meal. The salsa had too much cilantro. I ordered the taquitos as an appetizer. I was brought regular tacos. When I pointed out the mistake, I was told that I didn't order the "Taco Fingers", so the server was confused. (I had never heard of taquitos referred to by that name, and I'm a native of Albuquerque!) For my entree, I ordered the Stacked Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas. They tasted fine, and the Spanish Rice was flavorful. The surprise came when the bill arrived. I noticed an extra charge that I didn't recognize. I asked the server, and she informed me that there is an extra charge for enchiladas served stacked rather than rolled. I asked for rationale for such a charge, and she said that it's because they use more of the ingredients when the enchiladas are stacked rather than rolled. My family has been making enchiladas for decades and have never used more ingredients when preparing them as stacked. On my way out of the restaurant, I complained to the person at the front register that the menu didn't mention that there was an extra charge for stacked preparation. He indignantly pulled out the menu and showed that extra charge... on a menu item further down the section. I told him that I hadn't order that particular menu item, and he stated that the charges listed on that item applied to all the enchilada items in that section. I guess I was supposed to figure that out instead of the menu clearly stating that? My advice- if you're considering going to Monroe's for New Mexican food, save yourself the nickel & diming. Go one street over and dine at Sadie's, where the food is delicious, there is no extra charge for stacked enchiladas (if that's your fave dish), and the chips & salsa are fabulous, free, and never-ending. read more

Placed my order for my family and myself, they forgot an order of enchiladas. So I drive back, left the food for my kids to eat since they were hungry, they confronted me over the missing plate asking where everything else was at as if I was lying and desperate for their subpar microwave equivalent food. They go ahead and make it for me and since I had to go back, my food is now cold. The bald guy at the front and the owner still arguing me telling me they gave me the benefit of the doubt on the missing plate. They said next time to bring the whole order back. I told him no one is that desperate for a free plate of the disgusting food they serve. Bland and flavorless, should've just taken it all back for a refund. Plenty of other choices with better service and food. Nice looking place though, too bad owner is awful and so is the food. read more

The margaritas are made with wine and, surprisingly, tasty. I had fish (2). tacos, which had about a 1" X 3" finger of fish, cod, didn't even reach end to end in the small soft tortillas. Unimpressive and overpriced for the amount of fish you get. My husband had the chili rellenos plate. Ordered sauce on the side to ensure a crisp relleno. Neverless it arrived far from light & crisp, instead with an oil soaked batter.our sides - beans (very good) rice (not very good) and onion rings (excellent). So again, a mixed bag. read more
