Never thought I'd write a 5 star review on something as simple as getting a key copied, but here goes. Came in today, was in and out in 30 seconds! He knew exactly what he was doing, and it was incredibly cheap. I think the last time I went to get a key copied I went to Walmar, it took significantly longer than 30 seconds, and the key was always a little off, not to mention I had to be in Walmart... Anyways, I heard the man helping another customer as well for something more complicated than key copy, and he was extremely knowledgeable and friendly as well. Darrell and his staff are always courteous and efficient. However, my latest interaction with this company demands a Yelp review. During the brush fire a few days ago when we were advised to stand by to evacuate our home, my husband and I inadvertently locked ourselves out of our house. My husband contacted Darrell and explained our plight. Darrell came right over - through the police blockades a few streets below us and got to work so we could get in our home. I would like to think we received preferential treatment, but he had no idea who we were. That's just the way he works! I never thought finding an old skeleton key to open my great-grandmothers hope chest would be such a trial. Of course, over the years the key was lost. I Googled locksmith skeleton key, called and emailed, and there were no locksmiths with any type of key that would fit. They all suggested trying an antique dealer and said the only thing they could do would ruin the chest lock and probably part of the wood. My friend, a realtor (these folks know everyone!) suggested that I call Darryl at Monrovia Lockshop and see what he might be able to do. Darryl is the only locksmith in L.A. County with skeleton keys and he let me take the whole batch of keys he had home with me to see if any were a fit. He didnt even charge to take them! Three of the keys were close but did not turn the lock. Darryl came to our house the next day, worked with the lock and keys for awhile and before our eyes, filed and adjusted one of this skeleton keys until it fit and easily opened our family heirloom. He spent over an hour working with that chest, then charged me $85 for all of his labor, obvious know-how AND my new skeleton key - a bargain in anyones book! I gave him $100 and insisted he keep the change - had there been anyone else knowledgeable enough to to perform this task, it would easily have cost us more than double for all the time he invested in saving my family antique, not to mention the fact that he is the only guy around with this special talent for obscure needs...I highly recommend Darryl to anyone and everyone. We are hiring Darryl to change all of the locks on our business doors for our new renter, then all of the locks on our house so that they are all finally keyed alike. I know I could have had the ordinary, mundane stuff done done anytime by anyone else but Darryl is the first businessman we have found in years that likes his work, works hard to please and performs excellently (PLUS, he is more than fair with billing!!). In a time when there are liars, cheats and thieves in So.Cal. businesses, mediocrity at best, late or no-shows, etc., it is refreshing to be introduced to such an inspiration. This is the second time I try to give them business and the guy thinks to much to do some thing!! I have a business and a home in the area I asked I need it to change my key combinations on my bussines in my doors I told him it with 30 or 50 feet from there and he told me just to go see it It will cost me 100 plus and extra for every key The second one I got lock out of my car Same attitude and $75 plus I got to wait a day cause there not have the tools to open my car!?!? Same 40 feet from there business in the parking lot accross from them! I had it!!! If you have an emergency I rely recomend Foothill lock & key in pasadena 626 441 7777 There so nice!! They came right away and only paid $45 and for my business also 45 each door and give me a key and $6 extra for each copies. I have an 80 year old front door with a mortise lock. The deadbolt got stuck so I turned the thumb latch with a pair of pliers and broke something. The thumb latch turned but the bolt didn't move. I tried taking off the door by removing the hinge pins but the hinge plates interfered with each other and I couldn't get the door off. Darrel somehow got the bolt retracted, found a replacement for the piece that broke at an architectural salvage company in Pasadena and replaced the tumblers in the key cylinder (I didn't have a key for it) so I could unlock it from the outside. He also had a backup plan so I could salvage the door if he couldn't find the replacement part. All at a very reasonable price! read more

Excellent friendly customer service. My neighbor was watching my house while I was on vacation and my front door lock broke. Darrell came to the house and determined I had an unusual lock set. He provided advice and did not charge for the service call, which was a relief to my neighbor. I later picked up a replacement part from the door dealer and called for another appointment. Darrell returned and attempted to repair the door but he said I was given the wrong part. He really tried to fix the problem. He left and did NOT charge me for the service call. After learning from the dealer that the lock was no longer manufactured I decided to purchase another set. Darrell returned for the third time and installed the lock. He worked extra hard to make sure the old installation marks were covered. He charged a reasonable fee, especially since he had not charged me for the two previous visits. I broke my car key off in my car door, and they were able to make me a new key in minutes out of the two half keys. They warned me it was difficult to do without the car there to fit it, and that it may be a bit tight. It was, but I brought it back & they filed it down for free!!! When i got home, it fit perfectly in the lock & ignition as if they had been able to match the lock precisely.
