Tony is rude, refuses to cut your hair if he doesn't feel like it even though he may be free to do so. When I asked him why wouldn't he cut my hair after turning me down on 3 separate occasions he replied: "you're kind and appropriate but I just don't like our chemistry" What??? Daniel, master of short - pixy (a bit edgy too!) cuts for women. Truly and honestly. Over the years, since moving to the East Bay from Paris, France, where, by the way, I always had fabulous haircuts, I have probably visited most of the fashionable salons around. I have had good hair cuts and sometimes even great hair cuts, but no stylist, ever, cut my hair so perfectly well. So precisely well. So well, in fact, that it grows well! Sometimes you get a good hair cut but a couple of weeks later it doesn't look all that great any longer. Daniel's cuts last, period. They look totally awesome until the next cut. I go there only in an emergency, which is every two years or so. My kids do not want to go there. It isn't just the bad haircuts. It is not only that they rush you. It is not just that they make you wait to walk out for a cigarette break. It is the lousy sense of self importance of the lady barbers. Makes me feel like a criminal in court. They were not like this five years ago. They had to work at it slowly over time to be this miserable. At least the guy gives out donuts. Despite living in the area, we drive to the Temescal Alley Barber Shop or to any stylist shop in Oakland's Chinatown. They say location is everything. But these jokers ruined even that. read more

It saved my hair's life when Tegan started working for this place. Before, the barbers were mainly old white men who were intimidating and I didn't feel comfortable going in to ask for a barbered cut as a woman-presenting person. I have been going to see Tegan for about a year now, and I could not be happier with the service that she gives me. Tegan was the first barber I went to that didn't tell me "I can't cut your hair that way because you are a girl". She is really considerate about cutting your hair the way you want it, and doesn't do anything weird or different than you asked like other places that I've been to. I also want to add, in response to some of the more negative reviews that I have seen about this shop lately, that these barbers are people, not robots. They have personalities. They need to eat and take breaks and talk about silly things too. If they have an appointment, they will honor that appointment and won't take people in the meantime causing long waits for people who made that appointment. You can always call ahead and ask if a barber is available, or what time they will be available. Overall I've always had a good experience there making small talk with Tegan, Syd, Linda, and Daniel (I don't see Anthony much when I go in), and talking about how things have been going in our lives while I wait for my cut or during my cut. I will admit that the floor is a little hairy, but I've never been so disgusted that I had to walk out. I will continue to be a regular here until Tegan is gone. Edit: I marked the price as moderate, because I am a college student and I always tip 20%, so $30 is kind of a lot for me, but I'm sure that when I have a steady full-time job it won't seem like a lot. read more

My husband went today to get a haircut at this location for the first time since we live nearby. When my husband gave feedback to the woman cutting his hair that he wanted it to be a little shorter, she told him that was basically another haircut. She turned to the person waiting next and loudly said "this will be a while because this man (my husband) wants it shorter which is basically another haircut." Like, seriously people? My husband is a pretty quiet man, so he didn't say anything except to call me after and say he will need to go to another place to get his haircut fixed and to tell me how that person had treated him really rudely. When I saw the picture he sent afterwards, I was shocked at just how bad his haircut looked! Bangs...? Definitely do not go here unless you want to be treated poorly while getting a bad haircut that needs to be fixed immediately following. read more

I would give zero stars if possible. Here is why: The people cutting your hair are hit or miss. Some do not listen to your request or simply ignore them. I am not a chatty person but to not say a single word to your customer until the end and say "You're done" is pretty bad. I had been coming here for two years consistently but this visit was my last time. The person there basically said he only wants to cut Certain people's hair which is ok but he said I was next and I waited 20 minutes plus. Anthony, the owner, should clean house and get a new crew. Just got an irritated phone call from my hubby, He always goes to Montclair Barber shop, has for years. We take our son there, too. They must not need money. Tegan has refused to cut his hair twice, probably because Tiffany cut his hair once. I think Tiffany is great, but not worth the drama of having to go there. It seems like everyone who works there is in a pissing contest with each other all of the time. It's bad enough that it's dirty and stinky, but for the attitudes to be stank as well-- that's doing too much. If this place wasn't in Montclair, it would not survive, Spend your $35 bucks elsewhere, there are plenty of spots in Oakland that charge the same for a much better experience. read more

Okay folks - it's time to head into the Montclair Barber Shop. They've updated.....no, not the interior (maybe that'll be next), but the barbers themselves. You can now get whoever you're comfortable with - the older gentleman (not that old, by the way) who I believe is Anthony and I believe owns the shop, the hipster-mustachioed gentleman, the uber-hip relative youngster Tegan, and the older reminds-you-of-mom (again - not that old, fyi) lady. WHAT? Two men and two WOMEN cutting hair here? Unheard of. Until now, that is. In fact, that is why we went. I had absolutely forbidden the men-folk from coming here while there was the....let's say "unsavory" element of centuries-old attitudes and well, let's just call it what was - racism, genderism, homophobia. That seems to all be gone. So today we walked down to the village and brought the teen boy in. Tegan was available and so she went right to work. She was careful, thoughtful, got a couple of tips from Daniel, took in some info from me as to how very little the boy will actually do to his hair each day, and gave him a great cut. Let me tell you, it was annoying to go to Diagon Alley....sorry....Temescal Alley and wait 3 hours for a freakin' haircut, so we are thrilled to have this "new" option right in the village. Got my haircut by Art and he has just done a fantastic job, have been back several times and he has done a great job every time and been incredibly thoughtful and thorough. The first time I went and saw Art he looked at my hair and asked me why I parted my hair left to right and I said, I don't know that's just how I've done it, he took the time to let me know that wasn't how my hair naturally wanted to lay and so helped me change the direction of my part. I had been doing it the same way for 35 years and nobody had ever told me that! Art has also given me basic advice on how to comb and style my hair and even cutting it so it doesn't require much upkeep or styling (per my preference). Great cut and a great guy can't recommend him highly enough. read more

I called this shopu, they told me to come in, that they weren't busy.. thinking back on it it's Friday you're barber shop if you're not busy there's something seriously wrong here.. I drove over and told them I wanted my haircut and beard trimmed, as I was standing in the doorway the guy sitting down ask me how I wanted it cut I told him a zero fade he looked at me with fear in his eyes, he then said I can't do that only Rebecca can, she's about to go on lunch.. Rebecca was all sweaty and I saw that she was giving the customer she was working on a 0 fade that looked all butched and effed-up. She looked at me all annoyed and said it's fine I'll do it right now. The whole time I'm standing there in the doorway was my son. Then the barber who is standing in between the two that I was speaking to said is it a low or high fade? Then they demanded a picture to show them what I wanted so I Googled it and showed him. He said oh it's a low fade I don't think she can do that. Then Rebecca told me sounding very annoyed "just wait, I'll talk to you about it in a minute." I replied very sweetly, "no you won't." I'm 39 year old this October which is old enough to trust my gut, thank you but no thank you in my opinion their whole staff should revisit Barber College and brush up on their training. I don't regularly post reviews. But this is an occasion that I feel I must. I have had my haircut a few times here. Each time.the stylist reeked of cigarettes. The smell was all over their hands as they cut my hair. I couldn't take it. The place us a mess. Hair all over the floor. Then the stylist uses a hair dryer to just blow it around from under his feet, effectively blowing it into the air. I have stayed away for some time now but decided to try one last time. It is my local barber shop and I prefer to spend my money locally when possible. I stopped in and there was no one waiting. I thought great. A quick stop for a cut. One gentleman walks in and the head barber seats Hume right away and asks one of the other stylists to give him a quick cut. I thought, OK. He is regular. Probably stopped by earlier. I waited. His chair became available and another guy walks right in off the street and he seats him. Again, I thought ok. Maybe a regular. I wait longer. The barber finishes this guy up and I figure, OK my turn. But noooo. He taps on the with down and invites another guy off the street that he clearly knows and has seen before. The guy even says thanks for taking me right away. That was it for me. I get up and walk out. They seem to.have plenty of regular business and clearly don't need mine. I attempted to get my son's hair cut here twice. the first time I walked in at 11:45am on a Sunday and was told by two ladies that I needed to return in an hour with my son because they were hungry the needed to take lunch (apparently couldn't do so one at a time during business hours on a busy Sunday). I said fine I would try to come back, but could not wait an hour that day so decided to come back another week. The next time I went in with my son. They looked highly annoyed I had brought in a kid under the age of 10 to start with. He is 3 1/2. They asked multiple times if I "actually" wanted to cut his hair and then talked amongst themselves, which I could hear, sounding exasperated by the fact they had to do a "long hair cut" (his hair is 4-6 inches long) and kept looking at us like we were going to be this huge issue. When it came time to cut his hair, he did not want to sit in the barber chair alone (his first cut outside a salon). I was told very quickly, after waiting patiently for 20 mins, while being shot annoyed looks, unless he is sitting alone, and not on my lap, they refused to cut it. This I understand and would be ok with if I had walked into Toni & Guy or something. This shop had a nice huge sign saying "kid friendly!!" etc. The problem, besides the consistently rude and dismissive customer service, is please do not state you do children's cuts if you are not willing to accommodate them out of sheer laziness and annoyance, which seemed to be consistent theme in this particular location with the same two woman both visits. It was not only disappointing for me but for my son who walked out and was quite old enough and mature enough to understand he had been treated like crap an asked what he did wrong that they wouldn't cut his hair. Shameful. Take that sign down and you won't have to "deal" with children. Or put an age limit up if you feel the young ones are too much of a pain in the ass for you to treat with respect and dignity. I will never return and everyone I know in Oakland, will be told to not go there by me as well as hear this story, despite their age. read more

ok an update. I went back with my wife to try this place one more time (figured third time was the charm) We got the most amazing reception, this barber shop is very small, really just a tiny room. So when we walked in and were completely ignored, and I mean no greeting, no eye contact, if was certainly awkward! The male barber was sitting in his chair playing iPad, So..we sat down, waited, finally my wife piped up and asked the guy "are you busy?" He told us then that he was waiting for some "other guy" to show up but if the person didn't come, he would cut our hair. The other two cutters were busy, but they had nothing to say during this process. So we sat, and sat, and finally my wife said to me sotto voce "do you want to stay here?" I guess i was sort of paralyzed by feeling embarrassed and awkward and also mesmerized by staring at all the hair that was all over everything (I think they wait until the end of the day to sweep up, gross!!!) Also the place smells very bad!! no air, maybe I was put into a trance from the fumes and lack of air. So we got up and hieghed ourselves out of there! I dont know if they treat everybody like this, or it was just us that merited this special treatment, but my take on it is, this place has just got problems, and they certainly have no concept of customer service. We are two older dykes, but I don't think it was homophobia, cause they have a standard issue young dyke chick™ working there, anyway, not my problem, and I will be spending my dollars elsewhere. read more

I was at home with a friend and we were stuck without a car. Decided to try out the local barbershop because it was only 2 blocks away. Called ahead of time and made an appointment for two people at 2pm, also told them i wanted a bald fade. Got there on time and there was only one guy cutting hair at the first chair. I said i called in and he said a barber named daniel would be coming any second. I get seated at seat 2 with daniel 10 minutes late and the first barber finishes up his guy and seats someone else waiting and my friend had to wait til 2:30 to get cut.. really unprofessional. Thats not how appointments work. Anyway I told Daniel again that I wanted a bald fade and he goes on a rant saying bald fades are for black hair and its too hard to do it on Asian hair. My first time hearing this as ive been getting the same cut for 6 years. Anyway after a few minutes of ranting he agrees to do it. After i told him other barbers had no problem he asks me "why dont you go there then?" I couldnt believe it, a fade is the first hair cut barber schools teach you. During my cut he says hed never let a daughter date a guy with a fade. Extremely rude. I could also see why he felt uncomfortable giving me the cut, it was bad. Check the photo. I really want to give this place a good review, I really do. It should be an awesome little barber shop that takes you back to the 'old school' barber shop appeal that it appears to have. But, the old guy that runs the shop smokes incessantly outside, and smells terrible when he's cutting your hair and talking to you. He's a biker, and likes to talk about his bikes, and his daughters bikes. and shares stories that kids shouldn't hear... but overall, I really didn't like the hair cut, and didn't like the atmosphere. Probably won't go back. I can get the same unpleasant half-hearted conversation going to super cuts for the same price, and get my hair cut quicker and without the stink. read more

Young guy did a nice job here. Went back, and the super old dude cut my hair. Nice guy but a mediocre haircut -- and I have a zero buzz cut, so no way to mess it up. But hours later I have hair in my collar, and I rubbed my head with my hand and it's covered -- any decent shop cleans all that up for you. WORST HAIRCUT I'VE EVER HAD. I asked for a trim and the gentleman appeared he was on board with what I was saying. However, the first thing he did was take the trimmers up the side of my head and take all my hair off, now I look like a jarhead (I am a Marine) and that is not what I was asking for. I had to go to another barber and have him fix the damage and now I look ridiculous. I am still in awe of what a bad haircut I received. I would not get my haircut there if someone paid me $100. Ok, i'll admit, I've never personally gotten a haircut here, but that doesn't matter. I have gone w/ a friend, and watch him get a really good haircut as a walk-in, pretty quick. I also have walked by the shop multiple times and am always greeted with a hello by one of the main guys. If I need to get a haircut in their fashion, or if I know a male friend that needs a haircut, I'll automatically send him here. I've had two haircuts here: one with Daniel, and one with a fella in his early 50s--don't recall his name, but he's neither Rocky nor the lecherous older guy who's always gawking at female passers-by. Daniel did a good job; gave me exactly what I asked for, and fast, too. The second guy was competent, gave me a good enough haircut, but NOT what I asked for. I wanted a simple #1 fade--he gave me a #2. If I ask for a #1 fade, that's what I expect to get! Don't take matters into your own hands if you want me back in your chair again. It's too bad you can't assign individual barbers different scores, because I'd give Daniel five stars. Unfortunately, the impression made by the second haircut is stronger than that made by the first. Not a bad haircut, but also not what I requested. read more

Very bummed to say this was my first and last visit to Montclair Barber Shop....first I walk in and Anthony who looks like he must be the owner greeted me after walking through the door smelling like weed and looking pretty stoned or drunk and proceeded to ask me how I like my hair cut, after I told him he says "oh then you'll want to wait for Tiffany, she is much better at the hard part". Tiffany did not have the nicest warmest welcoming attitude but thought she did an okay job on my hair until I found out it was a $30 cut....I have had far better for half the price.
