We love Monte De Rey! We go to this location and the one across town. We nearly get the same thing every time and the food is always fresh, hot, delicious, and consistent. If you like a regular ACP, they have a great one. I've recently gotten hooked on the Pollo Chipotle and it is so yummy! We love all of the servers we have at both locations that we frequent! I ordered a Speedy with beans but the restaurant made a mistake and served a Speedy with rice. I pointed this error out and the waiter kindly brought out a side of beans. When the bill arrived, it was for both the Speedy with rice PLUS a extra side of beans. The manager insisted I should pay for "extra" side, even though they made the error by serving the wrong side. Stopped in after seeing Christmas lights with a group of eight. Staff was polite and quickly sat us. They brought out plenty of chips and salsa. The chips were warm and crispy. The salsa was very good and not too spicy. I ordered cheesy rice and a chicken tamale. The rice was really good and the tamale was one of the best I'd had. Everyone in my group enjoyed their meal and service. When we were about to leave the waiter brought over cinnamon dessert chips for our entire table. It was a nice treat! Terrible phone service. Do not try to call and make an order. They pick up your call and only speak in Spanish when you say you need English they try to say they don't understand you (they say this in perfect English) and they will tell you to hold (in English) then hang up on you. This has happened to me and my family over the phone with them on multiple occasions. While in the restaurant sitting down they speak to you in clear English. Service in restaurant is decent. I ended up here by happenstance - the small Chinese place I was going to doesn't open until noon on weekends. This is a small, overly colorful place that gets really noisy in a hurry as it fills. There are several Monte de Rey locations in the Winston area, but this one is different as to the interior setup and the menu. I ordered the Arrachera dinner - which is grilled skirt steak accompanied by beans, queso fresco, grilled jalapeño, pico and some avocado slices. The steak was two slices of thin skirt steak that was much over cooked. While there was some flavor here, the meat was very chewy. The knife and fork were thin and dull, you ended up using them to literally pull the meat apart into something resembling bite size pieces - a lot of work for very little reward! The beans were excellent, the pico was fresh & sharp tasting. The Avocado slices were mushy, old tasting, while the queso fresco followed the same path. I really enjoy this Mexican restaurant, and I eat here at least once a week. The service is super friendly, and they have a great salsa picante (ask for it!!). They provide ample chips and complimentary salsa (fresh and flavorful...not overly tomato or watery), unlike some other Mexican restaurants in town. My favorite dish is the enchilada lovers (five cheese enchiladas drowned in sauce and covered in chicken and cheese). My friend always gets the chicken sopes. I'm giving this place 4 Stars mainly because of the Menu selection. The menu is Huge! I ordered a Chimichanga combo. 1 beef, 1 chicken and a chicken tamale. My Father ordered the Salmon. I have been ordering from this location for over a year, and has been really great until the last month or two. We order through DoorDash since we have 3 small kids, especially recently since my fiancé has gone back to working second (as a full time working mom with a 7 month old, you can see where DoorDash would come in handy on nights that I cannot cook). There have been several times where I've ordered "no sour cream" and gotten sour cream. Okay, fine. Not too big of a deal considering I just take the sour cream off. Last time, I ordered enchiladas. Got the meal.... rice, salad, chicken, enchilada sauce..... no tortillas? No actual enchiladas, just the filling thrown into the same bowl as my rice. Today, I give it one more try. Order enchiladas again (with rice and salad). Get beans instead of rice. Pay EXTRA for my son to have a soft grilled chicken taco. Instead, he gets a hard beef taco. Call the restaurant because at this point I am just really ill. Keep calm, explain the situation. Manager seems less than sincere. Kept cutting me off while I was trying to speak, told me he would give me "credit" the next time I order which does NO good considering I order through DoorDash. I am just done. Other locations are much better, and there are more restaurants nearby that always have my order right. Several times each December, I drive to the Tanglewood Commons shopping center, park my car, stroll around, and witness the utter and complete madness that is the traffic at the Tanglewood Park Festival of Lights. You would not believe some of the things I have seen. It boggles my mind that people spend 3 hours waiting in a sea of cars to see a show that is just not all that great. But it gives me a chance to witness some crazy behavior as tempers flare and bladders fill. It also gives me a chance to get some really good food from Monte de Rey Mexican restaurant. The businesses in this shopping center take a serious financial hit on heavy traffic nights when patrons cannot even access the shopping center. Forsyth County has attempted to fix this issue with various routing strategies, but the number of people coming to see the lights overwhelms these efforts. I always make it a point, though I am just one person, to get some take out from one of the restaurants before heading back to Davie County. Sorry about my tangent there, but I like to talk about it. So Monte de Rey: Beef burrito: nice sauce and cheese and generously filled with meat. I only wish the meat had a little more zip. Beef enchilada: see beef burrito. Nice shell. Taco: I love the tacos here. The shell is crispy and delicious, the beef is very good (if it is the same, it SEEMS to have more seasoning), and the cheese is positively outstanding--soft and delicious. Pico de gallo: some of the best I've ever had. Boldly oniony, garlicy, and wonderfully spicy with the traditional pico ingredients. DELICIOUS. Excellent consistency. Just don't plan on kissing anyone after you've eaten it. Unless they ate it as well! Rice and beans: mild and comforting, but could use a little more spice. Staff is adequately friendly, and the price is reasonable. Monte de Rey is a good place to get some Mexican food. It certainly hits the spot for me after an evening of watching the best free show around. read more

NO MASKS!!!! ANYWHERE!!! So this was my bad. I've been to other places in Clemmons that are, also, not following Covid guidelines. Now when we walk into a new place, and if the staff is not masked up, we leave. I don't know how I missed it until we had ordered. We have been here in the past and I don't remember being concerned about the cleanliness. The staff was busy, so we didn't see them all at once. As different people would come to out table, my husband said to me "They're not masked up." We should have left right then. That is on me. This is the second place in Clemmons where neither the staff nor the patrons are masked up. Is it a Clemmons thing? So sad to have to mark really great places off your list. My friend got the Enchiladas Lovers, it looked incredible but he isn't much for sharing (sigh). My nachos were awesome as well as the rest of the table's food. This has become a regular lunch spot for me and a friend. The service is excellent, the food is delicious and the location couldn't be more convenient. Spinach quesadilla is excellent and my new favorite is the Fiesta Grilled Chicken Salad - shredded lettuce, tons of sauteed peppers and onions, black beans, shredded cheese, grilled chicken and fresh sliced avocado. Today, i went in, I asked to try their sweet tea and the workers, servers, and managers all started to crowd around the front. I was waiting for my friends to order their food and sipped on the sweet tea and noticed them staring at me. I opened my tea and looked down and low and behold there was a fly. I addressed the manager about the fly, he came to the table and I asked him about the fly being in the drink and I quote said "yeah, I knew but its free". Terrible. Chile rellenos was the equivalent of a plate of queso and beef with no chile! The black bean burrito was a retried bean enchilada with marinara sauce! The steak tacos were shriveled fatty beef as tender as jerky in soft tortilla without anything else! The kids Mac and Cheese was the consistency of chicken noodle soup! Even a cheese quesadilla was messed up. The margarita was all mix and warm. Beer wasn't ice cold either though it was just $4. And meals were served 10 minutes apart between guests. My husband and I eat at this restaurant at least once a week. I've tried so many different items on their menu and have never been disappointed. Chips and salsa are always amazing. Chips are hot and salsa is the perfect consistency (not that watery crap some Mexican restaurants serve). Their tacos el pastor are AMAZING. Like, I dream about those freaking tacos. I also love the pollo loco and theiACP is my husband's favorite. Waitstaff is also so friendly. They will recommend items on the menu and they call us their, "amigos." Excellent curbside service! I placed my order by phone and it was ready in 10 minutes. It is standard Mexican fare. I love that the menu labels what is vegetarian. Place has gone down hill. Manager or owner. I don't know which one. He is a prick and if something is not right it is a fight to get it taken off the bill. The food is cold and the service is poor. I'd rather drive 10 miles the other way because it is never a good experience going to this dump. Stay away because you will not be happy. I won't be back after being a long time customer. This restaurant used to be excellent both in food and customer service. We started going to this one near Tanglewood after we moved near here, we used to enjoy the one near 421 on Lewisville-Clemmons Rd for years before moving. Tonight, everyone in my party was served at least 10 min. or more before me. When mine arrived it didn't look like what I ordered and part of order still missing. The waitress was a bit rude when I questioned my order and I said I did not want it. I was asked if I wanted something else. The replacement took just as long, while my party was finished with their meals. The replacement was actually the same thing, only difference the chicken was grilled rather than the stringy shredded chicken with cooked tomatoes that was swimming on my plate that was described on the menu simply as a chicken quesadilla. What really was the last straw was when the waitress came to the table with the check and began saying, because your order was replaced I charged you for the difference between the two. Really? I didn't even touch the first dish, it looked so disgusting. I was charged more for being unhappy and kept waiting to eat my dinner after my party was finished? No apologies, just nerve and rudeness. Too bad. They need a real overhaul in customer service first and then tackle their food inconsistencies! read more

I absolutely love Mexican food! I was told by my neighbors and several colleagues that the Monte De Rey restaurant near Tanglewood Park was fabulous. It was late on a Tuesday evening, and I did arrive around 9:20pm. I knew that I wanted something quick and simple, so I didn't feel that guilty that the restaurant closes at 10pm. I should have realized that there was a problem when I arrived. The parking lot was empty of cars and also had a lot of trash lying about in the parking spaces near the door. Unfortunately, I decided to go inside. I was greeted with an icy stare. I asked if I could be seated. I was begrudgingly escorted to a table. I did order a simple dinner of 2 tacos with rice and beans. I also ordered one cockktail, which was on special that evening. I was brought a basket of warm chips and salsa to eat while I waited for my food. The chips and salsa were delicious! Some of the freshest tasting, crispy chips I have had in some time. The salsa was also fresh and tangy. After a very short while, my food arrived. Again, the food was delicious. The tacos were flavorful, with crispy shells and the rice and beans were also great. I ate quickly, as I knew that they would soon be closing. The manager on duty that night turned all of the lights off and locked the restaurant doors at 9:44pm. I was surprised because the sign posted outside stated that they were open until 10pm. Okay. No problem for me- I am actually finished with this great meal. I was quite full from eating one taco and the rice and beans. I asked the waitress for a takeout box. The manager on duty suddenly appeared and informed me that I could not take the chips and salsa home. I was stunned. I have never had this happen to me in ANY MEXICAN RESTAURANT or any sort of restaurant. I had never during the meal asked for a refill of these chips and salsa. These were merely the ones brought to my table for me to enjoy while I was waiting for my meal to arrive. They were quite good, and I saw no reason to have them thrown away. I muttered, "Uh... okay???..." I did wonder why I was not allowed to take them home. I was "allowed" to take home my other unfinished taco, however. Puzzling, indeed. Good sense and sanitary measures would dictate that the aforementioned basket of chips and salsa would simply be thrown in the trash after I paid my bill and left. Hmmm. Maybe not. Perhaps they are to be saved and served to tomorrow's lunch crowd. The reason that I was treated in such a way is unfathomable and really just inexcusable. Despite the great food, I will NEVER be back. I will be sure to relay the "chips and salsa" policy for dine-in guests to all of my colleagues and friends.
