Tortilleria La Esperanza just opened in Clemmons, and it is a welcome and unique addition to the village culinary scene. Restaurant probably isn't the right word here, since there are no tables or chairs, but the cafeteria style set up allows you to pick from an assortment of hot bulk entrees, including three different barbacoa options (beef, lamb, and goat), chilles relleno, tripe, and ribs. You can purchase by the pound or (for most entrees) a combo that includes a truckload of tortillas, rice, beans, and salsa. Portions for the combos are huge. On this visit I opted for the beef barbacoa combo and added on one red and one green tamale. The beef was melt in your mouth tender and very tasty. Homemade tortillas are a hit (15 came with my order). The tamales were great as well! Definitely give this place a try, especially if you have an army to feed back at home.

I have only gotten tortillas and chips from this awesome tortilleria in the Lowe's Foods shopping center in Clemmons. Today, I took a closer look at the hot foods bar and couldn't resist the Chile Rellenos with rice & beans. Two huge Chiles battered in a light breading and covered in a light orange salsa that I could literally drink by the cup full! Mexican rice and frijoles (delicious pintos) all washed down with the best Agua de Piña (pineapple juice) I've ever tasted. Go, you will not regret it. They have a tortilla machine in plain view in the back and the Chile Rellenos plate came with 15 fresh, piping hot tortillas! I'll never buy store-bought tortillas or chips again. Right beside Brewer's Kettle if you want to walk next door and enjoy some authentic Mexican food with an adult beverage, but I won't be able to pass up the Aguas de Fresca from now on! Like I say...Go.

Barbacoa de Res (beef) combo with rice, beans, a dozen tortillas, red and green salsas. $13

Clemmons now boasts some of the best Mexican food in the Triad. Tortillería La Esperanza not only has amazing fresh corn tortillas, but they have a cafeteria counter filled with meats and side dishes to build a meal for every member of the family. Prices run approximately $9.99 per pound for most meats, including barbecoa in three varieties: beef, lamb and goat. They have pork ribs, whole chicken, steak and eggs, Chile rellenos, tamales, chicharrón in three varieties, small bite-sized pieces, massive whole slabs and the meaty strips about the size of a rib. Carnitas we're not on display, but they prepared some in the back for us, plus we sampled their chicken ala crema... which is awesome! You can order a combo which comes with a pound of meat, rice, beans, salsas and a dozen tortillas, all for $13. We got the carnitas and the barbecoa de res (beef). The carnitas needed a little more flavor, but a pinch of salt did the trick. The barbecoa is outstanding! The tortillas almost look like flour, but they are corn, and have the best texture and flavor... not to mention that they are served nice and warm. The tamales weren't too exciting, but they never have been my favorite. The Chile relleno was great with a poblano Chile stuffed with cheese, and the tomato sauce had a touch of sweetness, much like tomato soup. The meaty chicharrones were both crunchy and chewy and excellent when dipped in the juice from the barbecoa. The rice and black beans were both great, along with red and green salsas. They also have fresh made cheeses, so I'll have to go back to try their homemade Quesa Oaxaca, a Mexican string cheese. They will give you samples of everything they make. Service was fantastic. And 2 combo meals with 2 different meats, rice, beans, 2 dozen tortillas, two tamales, a chicharrón and a Chile relleno fed a family of four, plus leftovers for just $34.

We arrived about 3pm and it appeared busier than we would have expected. We were seated right away in a booth near the front, immediately provided menus and offered drinks. As we walked in, it appears they occupy three or more units with frontage in this strip mall because we saw at least two entrance doors not in use. We began to peruse the menu which is huge. We each looked for items we normally get at Mexican restaurants. We were provided chips and salsa and had to ask our server to give us more time to look at the menu. The salsa was not extremely chunky which is what I prefer and it had a very nice flavor. When our server returned, my wife chose the shrimp fajitas with a side of guacamole and I chose the Chili Colorado with double rice and no beans. Our meals arrived in a timely manner and looked great, the fajitas were sizzling and my wife thought the chunky guacamole looked great. We each enjoyed our meals but the service was just okay, it felt like we had to seek out our server. Overall it was a decent experience but nothing blew our socks off.

The worst part of this place is the slow service. There's one guy in particular who never checks on his tables. I've wait for my check for 29 minutes. The interior was decorated for Christmas, super cute, and we were greeted and seated instantly. Our waiter was friendly with a smile on his face and our chips, salsa, and drinks came out in record time. The salsa was great! It has just the tiniest bit of a kick to it and loads of cilantro which is a huge plus for me. They have a diverse menu and so many options sounded delicious so it was difficult to choose, but I went with a Tex-Mex Burrito with chicken. The food came out very fast. The burrito was smothered in queso which was another huge plus! Decent sized portions, the chicken and peppers and onions had an awesome flavor from their char marks. I loved the rice and beans. (Side note: I hate when places make you choose one or the other and was relieved to receive both!) There were two hot sauce options on the table and one of them might be a new favorite of mine. I do regret not trying the margarita on special for only $4! What a steal! For dinner, our two meals were $30 and we both took home leftovers. I will say, I am used to larger portions, but for the price it absolutely cannot be beat! Very satisfied with our visit here and I already can't wait to come back. Give it a try!

From the moment we sat down, the food just kept coming--and everything was fresh, hot, and full of flavor. We tried a variety of dishes including quesadillas, taquitos, tacos (steak, carnitas, and beef), a burrito we shared, and even a sizzling skillet that was SO good. You could tell the food wasn't just sitting--it was coming out fresh and made with care. The margaritas were definitely a highlight. They had a wide variety, and the drinks were flowing all night. I personally had a skinny margarita (recommended by our waitress), and it did not disappoint. One thing I really appreciated was them giving us a preview of their weekend brunch menu. They had pancakes, eggs, and even brunch-only refreshers for those who don't drink, which I thought was a nice touch and shows they're thinking about all types of guests. Beyond the food, it was nice hearing the story behind the restaurant and how the name Ma'Luz was inspired by family. You can tell they take pride in what they've built and their presence in the Triad. Overall, it was a great night with great food, strong drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere. I would definitely come back--especially to try more of the menu (and next time I'm getting a margarita flight because I missed out ).

The restaurant is beautiful, the atmosphere is warm, and the energy is just good. You can tell immediately that a lot of heart, time, and pride went into creating this space. We originally planned on getting queso and chips, but the owner recommended the seafood dip instead... and I'm thankful we listened. It was creamy, rich, and loaded with seafood. So good that at times we were literally asking each other, "Wait... what seafood is this?" -- and we didn't care because every bite was amazing. Then came the Barco El Patrón seafood boat, and whew. That thing is no joke. The presentation alone is impressive, but the flavor and portion size took it to another level. This is absolutely a shareable dish -- enough food for multiple people -- and you can tell a lot of effort goes into making it just right. My birria taquitos were hands down the best birria I've had in North Carolina. Crispy, flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and cooked with care. Every bite was worth it. And let's talk about the drinks. I had a cocktail flight created by Erica, and every single one was delicious. Balanced, smooth, and full of flavor -- not overly strong, just made really well. I enjoyed all four without feeling overwhelmed, which says a lot. But honestly, what stood out the most was the hospitality. Erica and her husband were kind, attentive, and genuinely thankful that we were there. They even refused our tips, which just shows the type of people they are. You can feel the love they have for their business and their customers. This is the kind of place you're happy to support. Amazing food, great drinks, beautiful atmosphere, and people who truly care. We'll definitely be back.
