This is my favorite place in all of Berkeley to get Mexican food. My husband and I stumbled upon it after moving in all of the furniture to our apartment our first night in the East Bay. We went because it was open late (a rarity itself in Berkeley), and we stayed for the pitcher of Sangria and the chill atmosphere. We keep coming back because of the great food. Our favorites are the quesadilla monte cristo and burrito with carne asada. Lately we've turned more to salads, and I highly recommend the ensalada santa fe...It has grilled chicken, peppers and this amazing lime dressing. And finally, Taqueria Montecristo has my heart forever because of their salsa boracho, which I can refill as much as I want (usually at least 3 times) over the course of a meal. read more

This is a more casual sister restaurant to Montero's on Solano in Albany. We ordered the rolled chicken tacos and beef tacos (which I generally see on the menu as taquitos) and a side of Mexican rice. The fillings were grilled chicken and beef ... the chicken was moist, but the beef chunks were a little dry and overcooked. I guess I was expecting shredded or ground beef, so this was a little unexpected. The help yourself salsa bar had offerings with varying degrees of heat. read more

Mexican breakfast near my house? How did I not know about you until now? We just came for our first breakfast here...nomtastic. Chilaquiles with several sauces, including yummy cilantro pesto, and breakfast enchiladas...also Mexican hot chocolate. We have relatives in Austin, land of Mexican breakfasts, and this is just about as good as breakfasts we've had there. People are also super friendly, salsa bar is good, and I like their veggie burritos and enchiladas. read more

The best taqueria in the Bay Area so far. Burrito with Carne Asada loaded with black beans, rice , sour crm, cheese, guacamole, and salsa picante was delivered fast and super HOT. the best burrito ever. You could actually taste the beef! It was tender and flavorful. it was 11pm on a sunday night and the place was immaculate. salsa bar was full and the containers were sitting in fresh ice. The avacado salsa and the borracho salsa were outsanding. The service was outstanding and super friendly. My best friends went to Cal so I'm no stranger to Monte Cristo. We used to come here hungover, in sweat pants, and order a beer... they never judged us. Now we live in Berkeley and it's a short walk from our house. Breakfast is better than I remember and their Mexican mochas are so good. Salsa for days, cute decor, good breakfast... Giving 2 stars for now because I got the wrong order total bummer.... I ordered a asada burrito with light beans, extra cheese, sour cream & guacamole to my surprise unwrapped the foil & beans were bursting out ugh still super hungry took the first bite & it was chicken. Immediately called to let them know of the problem & to my surprise AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE first was an apology, then offered to correct the order I will definitely go back to have them correct it so I can give them a better star rating. This place was super good! I went around 1 pm so I thought it'd be super busy with lunch rush hour, instead, there was no line! My food came super quick and the carne asada burrito I got was super yummy(photos attached). I asked for no chips cause I didn't want to pay $2 for a small bag but they gave them to me anyways so yay free chips. The horchata was good in flavor, but swallowing was a little grainy. Once upon a time it was a 5. now it's 2.5. Late hours, convenient location. But, when they removed the salsa bar (of a dozen different flavors from mango, papaya, pineapple, avocado, habanero etc. etc.) and replaced it with a squeeze bottle of green & a squeeze bottle of red, it moved from a foodie loc. to a taco truck. (and the parking lot closed for another Berkeley development.) Good. friendly service. median price. nearby parking late. varied but standard taqueria menu. Late service (at least until midnight) Bad: nothing bad, but now kind of standard fare. Unless it's late in the evening and everything else is closed, I now go elsewhare. read more

Monte Cristos is my go-to taqueria. I love them! All the food is delicious, especially the tacos tradicional, mole, mole burritos, chorizo con papas burritos, enchiladas and chile relleno. The al pastor is done nicely. The place is clean, cozy, creatively decorated and welcoming. They also play a nice variety of Latin music and jazz. Also, the agua fresca is amazing and very fresh.... and the micheladas delicioso! The family who owns it and works there are very friendly, quick and efficient. This place is authentic. Buena comida. There's a deal for really cheap papusas if you want a filling meal under $4. The plates go for $14 but they are worth it for the flavor and size. I usually take half to go because it's so much. read more

The food is decent, and the salsa bar has a medium that works well with the fish... Multiple times i have gotten sick from what looks like frozen veggies in my burritos. I moved over to the taco, but special orders here don't come out right. Requesting things without guacamole and sour cream has never worked. On the other hand it's one of the b-friends favorites. Monte Cristo on University gets three stars cause it feeds those of us eating dinner past 10:00 pm. veggie burritos & sopes are pretty good. i don't do meat, but i hear the grilled chicken is good. always ask for extra chips when you pay otherwise they skimp you. Sometimes the horchata is good, not always. The agua fresca is tasty but generally too much sugar so water/ice it down. it's great for quick, cheap, LATE NT eats. Relative to the FEW other berkeley spots open past 10PM: much better than Au Coqulet, better than Thai Noodle, on a par with Tuk Tuk and tastier than the standard pub fare at Triple Rock or Lanesplitter. read more

I Have have yet to find a better taqueria in Berkeley. For two years I worked near this restaurant and ate there at least once a week. The salsa bar is great, the chips are fresh and not too salty, and everything on the menu is excellent, especially their burritos and guacamole. It is even open until midnight. I would give this place 5 stars, but it is a bit pricey ($7 for a plain burrito and chips) and always really cold inside. read more

This place has one of the best quesadillas I've ever had. Stuffed with cheese, quac and your choice of meat. I went with the carne asada, which was of an impressively high quality taste. In spite of living within easy walking distance of at least ten taquerias, I just haven't found anything that can compare to the Mexican in the Bay Area. I came here after trying out the disgusting Mexican place down the street. It was amazing! I got their chimichanga, baja taco, and grilled fish taco. All 3 were just incredible. The sauce on each one was full of flavor and very unique and complimentary to the meat. The meat was very tender and juicy. The tortilla on the chimichanga was to die for! The chips and salsa were also delicious- usually chips are too dry and hurt my teeth but these were just perfect. The ambiance was nice too. Not too upscale, but definitely good enough to sit down and have a conversation. I don't think it's too pricey. I got a chimichanga (served with rice and beans), the two tacos (which were huge), a beer, and a soda for $25. I didn't realize I was charged for the chips too, but apparently they weren't that expensive because the total was still pretty low. There is a parking lot available that had lot of empty spaces when I went. I can't really think of anything negative to say...although I am a big fan of fountain drinks instead of canned soda, so I guess that was the only downside. Highly recommend! read more

This little place is pretty standard when it comes to food prices and choices. All the standard Mexican fare is there. My review is for the street tacos. I have them a couple times a week because they are open till midnight and on my way home from work. The tacos are always solid, delicious and what I am expecting. Good portions for the price and never been disappointed. The staff is always super friendly and recognize me. Always helpful if I need it. Never wait more than 5-10 minutes and can have a beer or some water while I wait. Good, solid Mexican food that is open late and consistently delicious. read more

Fresh food, nice service. I love seafood there fish tacos are so good fried or sautéed . The fish burrito is super good too, but way too over priced. I love the decor and the beautiful plants that surround the inside windows. Cute for a lunch date or a quick lunch for work . They are fast and efficient. My girlfriend's family was in town for the evening and we decided to bring them to this place after driving aimlessly up and down University. We had taken a huge risk since we have never eaten here before. We had to order our food from the register (soo fast foodish). Our food was served within 10 minutes though! I was quite surprised at how decent the food was. The Chicken Chimichanga was to die for! Very few mexican restaurants can make a good chimichanga, this is one of them. I was disappointed at how tasteless the carne asada plate was. The meat was not seasoned and was a little on the dry side. I would really like to try their breakfast plates someday. I recommend this place. Although not all of its food is the best in the west, it truly has a good variety and atmosphere. read more

The service is friendly, the atmosphere is just fine for a taquería, but their food needs work. The quality of the meat leaves much to be desired. I used to love this place until the young man who sometimes works the front ruined it for me forever by lying and letting my togo order sit for over 20 minutes while I sat and waited and watched. Then when we asked if it was our food he was like "oh yeah here". We told him it had been sitting there way to long and that our food would prob be cold. He told us it had only been sitting up there for maybe 5 minutes which was a bold faced lie since I saw when it came out and I can tell time and all that. For 50 dollars in food when you don't have much money and a person like this guy just ruins your dinner by being lazy, really can infuriate you. And then he was rude when we pointed out what happened instead of being professional and apologizing. We haven't been back since and we used to go at least once a week. Its okay though Casa Latina ended up getting our business and and their food is better anyways. read more

Over rated and over priced. I go in here and every time I hope its better. It was so bad last time I called the Thai restaurant across the street and ordered their food. Their food is so expensive and so bland. The meat is tough and over cooked and they are super stingy on extra sour cream, guac, and sauces. I have ordered their plantains a couple times now and they are so burnt its not even funny. Lately they have been charging for chips. Come on?!? What place charges for chips when you get a meal.
