I live close by to this taqueria and used to frequent it for semi-decent burritos until I got the WORST food poisoning of my life in June of 2008. I knew that the food poisoning could not have been from the popsicles or croissant or cheese sticks that I had eaten earlier that day. I was so sick from this place's carne asada burrito with guacamole. After I regained my strength again a few days later, I tried to tell a girl that worked there that I got food poisoning from their burrito, but she said the manager wasn't in and since I didn't have proof, I gave up. It was SO not worth the $8 I paid for that burrito to have the sickest day of my life and miss my orientation for UC Berkeley (fortunately, Cal let me reschedule). I've been going to Monte Cristo for years now, and it never disappoints. Their green salsa is amazing (doesn't taste as spicy as typical verde salsa, but not in a bad way - it's the best I've ever had) -- goes perfectly with the vegetarian burrito and some chips! The workers are all friendly, and the food comes out pretty fast (whether take-out order or dining in). They also have a big menu, so there's something for everyone. When it's crowded, it's often hard to find a table, which is unfortunate but a testament to how good it is. They seem to have raised their prices by a decent amount lately -- when we get a burrito, chicken quesadilla, and small order of chips, it's now $30 after including a tip, which seems pretty high for one burrito and one quesadilla. However, it is still worth it for how tasty it is, and the portions are definitely not small. read more

I tried to give this place multiple chances over the past few months but it's been disappointing every time. This place is close to me, so I mostly chose it out of convenience of location. The space is nice and comfortable to eat-in, but the cons heavily outweigh the pros: -Price: very overpriced for the quality and quantity of food. Tacos are only really worth it on Wednesdays when they have a discount. I paid $17 for a steak burrito with the works after tax and tip, and the taste is definitely not worth that price. Lots of extra add on prices for things like cheese, sour cream, and guac too. -Service: 4/5 times they have gotten my order wrong. Nearly everytime I've ordered a burrito or nachos, I receive something that has the wrong meat or missing ingredients I requested. I've even seen them deliver my order to the wrong customer and let the other person eat it without realizing they made a mistake. I'm honestly not sure why this keeps happening-- if it's miscommunication between servers and the kitchen, or just laziness on the kitchen's part but its really annoying to pay $17 for a burrito and not even receive the correct order. -Competition: Monte Cristo is a block away from La Mission, another subpar Berkeley spot. I've heard that La Mission, Monte Cristo, and Casa Latina (on San Pablo Ave.) are all owned by the same owner. The menus at all three spots have a similar design and nearly identical menu items and they're all within a mile radius. I've tried all three and honestly none of them fare much better than the other, they're all consistently overpriced with subpar service. read more

I'm curious why this place is named what it is. Montecristo can refer to either a place in Italy or in Colombia; strange choices for a Mexican Taqueria. Fortunately, their food doesn't have the same identity crisis. For such a casual place (you order at the counter), the interior is impressive. With the large mural, the tile floor, and the outdoorsy furniture, it invokes the feeling of eating in a plaza somewhere south of the border. The reason I don't give this place 5 stars is because of their burritos. I think everything I have tried here, their tacos especially, are the best in Berkeley. Hands down... with the exception of their burritos. The burritos are good, really good, but you can get a better one at several places, like Gordo's. I've been here too many times to count. Every time I've come here (quite a few times over the last few years) I've gotten extremely tasty food. Customer service has always been excellent. Menu items can be a bit pricey, and they tend to be quite busy near meal hours, but I've always really enjoyed the food I've recieved. Most recently we got tacos in three flavors, papusa, and the tortilla soup, and flan. All were great. Love the house made salsa! We especially like that they are open late, and the food is consistently good no matter what hour you come in. I feel kinda bad about giving only 2 stars but I don't feel it is "A-ok". I have been here twice now. The first time I was seriously disappointed. Can't recall why...but I recall not wanting to go back. Today was a co-workers choice of destination and this was his. I ordered a Pollo Asada burrito - easy on the black beans, salsa but rice on the side. The burrito was HUGE, but also stuffed far too many beans, not a whole lot of chicken or salsa. The rice, well, it was a meal in and of itself - light, fluffy, a little dry. Overall, it was more than enough food. But it just isn't my "thang". Being a native San Diegan, I want either really authentic with lots of flavors or Rubios - nothing in between. Not to mention, $6.95 for 4 rolled tacos w/ chz and guac is a bit much....as any southern Californian will tell you. I will say - the salsa was delicious! read more

LATINOS DO NOT EAT HERE. If you are Latino, do not eat here, unless you're okay with not receiving the same courtesy as Whites. The perra at the register was very rude to me, eye-roll and everything. Apparently, la perra didn't have the patience for me to decide what kind of meat I wanted in my burrito. She ecpressed her exasperation by rolling her eyes and expelling a deep breath! No sooner did I find a seat than a White man appeared at the counter, and the perra was exceedingly friendly, smiling from ear-to-ear with a fake-azz smile!!! Then, what seemed like an eternity, the perra brought my chile verde burrito wearing a solemn face. Then I observed her serve the Gringo his burrito, wearing that fake smile she had earlier. Then I watched the perra fetch a napkin and utensils for him which she didn't do for me!!! Pinche muerta de hambre!!! And to top it off, the chile verde burrito was VERY dried and bland!!! It clearly, needed more green sauce and some chopped onions!!! This was my second time coming here. The first time was when they first opened and before my yelp account. It was also a bad experience. This rating is for two things. The decor. The Nopalitos tacos. The Nopalitos tacos are the best I've had anywhere that wasn't somebodies mother's kitchen and they're a lot better than most of those. I won't even order them anywhere else anymore because the comparison is simply unfair. Decor: The tile, wood and metal are all an unexpected treat based on what you would expect from the outside. So came here today after checking yelp. Yes they use good quality ingredients but the steak burrito had little steak tidbits and mostly rice and cheese that was not melted and almost non existent.
