Found this place on yelp when looking for a nice taqueria to get some tacos from, then I came across Monte Cristo in Berkeley. It happened to be Wednesday, which is indeed Taco Wednesday! All tacos are $2 each and I have to tell you......the spicy shredded chicken tacos are the best on earth! Trust me they are addicting! I L.O.V.E. this place!!! Funny but I always get the Chile verde. The plate OR the burrito. One time I didn't get to eat my plate until the next day... I swear it was better the second day. My daughter was the one who told us to try the posole. My husband's and I were quite surprised at how good it is. I will definitely order on a cold day if I can tear myself away from the Chile Verde. Food is ok, but they've gotten my to-go order wrong four times in the past 10 orders. Sometimes the mistakes are minor (came with beans when I wanted them held), sometimes more significant (came with meat when I ordered vegetarian). The tickets are always correct, but the mistake is in the kitchen. They charge for chips and salsa -- no free salsa bar :( I wanted to order the veggie enchilada with mole sauce (it comes with green), but the woman wanted to charge me for the chicken mole enchilada price (somewhere around $3 more). Two salsas came with the chips in a squeeze bottle, which I've never encountered before. The green salsa is good, but neither is very spicy. The enchilada was good but spicy. The salad on the side (cabbage and pico) had too much dressing on it that ran into my beans and enchiladas. We cleared our own plates at the end as well, not sure if it's necessary, but we saw a black container in the corner where dishes seemed to collect. My wife got the Nopales Tostada and I got the Chicken Mole. Both were terrific. I've not tried nopales very much, but they were fresh, tender and the flavor was delightfully subtle. First off, it's on University, but has its own parking lot which helps a TON. There's plenty of seating, friendly staff, quick service and food came quickly. Clean, well appointed, easy to navigate, and even had some blistered jalapenos in case you wanted to add some heat to your meal. Their food was pretty solid - got tacos and burrito, and the meats tasted home made, real and quality ingredients. I would say that some drawbacks were their homemade drinks (sangria tasted pretty watered down), their chips and salsa were extra, and there was no salsa counter for unlimited salsa to spice up your food. read more
