I really wanted to like this place since it's local, but after three visits, I can't recommend it. The hovering: Every single time I walked in, staff would immediately start following me around the store. Even after politely saying I was just browsing, they'd continue shadowing me. It felt less like customer service and more like I was being watched for shoplifting. The knife sharpening disaster: Brought in 4 knives on a Saturday. When I greeted the owner, he completely ignored me and just stepped aside for an employee to ring me up. Already awkward. They said the knives would be ready Monday. Showed up Tuesday - not ready. "We'll call you when they're done." By Friday, still no call. Went in to pick them up anyway - no apology, just handed them over. When I got home and tried using them, I realized none of the knives had actually been sharpened. Not one. The pattern: After this experience, I checked their reviews and realized I'm not alone. Multiple people have complained about similar treatment and service issues. Bottom line: Overpriced merchandise, surveillance-style customer service, unreliable work, and zero accountability when they mess up. I tried to return 2 un-opened brand-new gas connectors ($200.00) that I purchased the day before and they refused it. No store credit. Just exchange for the exact same amount within 15 days. I did not need anything at the time and asked to give me a year or a few months to use the credit and the answer was NO. Store policy. The business owner must abide by California law and honor the gift card. You may also have the legal right to get the cash back! So, you can go elsewhere because this doesn't see like a good business to support. I was not surprised to see this business has 2 1/2 stars l. In my opinion, this guy is not A good business man. Despite things I've heard from the restaurant owners I have still giving him my business on many occasions. I bought a part for an appliance after an employee told me it was the part I needed. It turned out to not be compatible. I called them 10 minutes after I left the place to tell them that and ask them if I could come return it and that's when they told me they didn't give any refunds, I thought that was ridiculous considering the employee told me it was the correct item. The lady then told me she could give me store credit but only if I come back within 14 days. Once I arrived a week later, the other lady told me I needed to go ask the owner for the store credit so I did, and he said "no, I could just exchange it." I told them they did not have the part I needed, but In a very rude and dismissive way, he told me to go pick something else. Now let's talk about the prices. Highly overpriced in my opinion! I have seen things on Amazon that are made by the same manufacturer for half the price. Do yourself a favor and order from Amazon. You can easily find one day shipping. Then, when he goes out of business, he will realize that taking care of his employees and his customers is vital to a business being successful. AVOID THIS BUSINESS! I really wish zero stars was an option. I have a $200 gift certificate given to me by a friend last year. Now that the holidays are over (Dec 26th) I called to ask if I could redeem the certificate. The certificate says it expires 1 year from purchase date, it is 5 days past that date. They said, "no, we can't be doing that" Seems a bit like stealing to me. My friends gave them $200 to support their new location and they wont flex at all. Driving down lighthouse my wife and I saw this place and it looked interesting for those who like kitchen stuff. We went in and they have a huge selection of kitchen items for the home and professional chef. Unfortunately they also have a employee who after asking if we needed help we replied " no right now we are just looking " continued to follow us around the store and pretend to clean something on the isle over. As we went through the store there she was wiping something one isle over. It was very obvious she was not there to answer questions but to make sure we knew she was watching us as she presumed that we were there to shoplift. This made us very uncomfortable and annoyed. As we did purchase a few items and were paying for them I did point out these feelings to this person and told her that we would not return all I got was head down and she walked away. I had occasion to revisit this store as they carried an item I needed post haste. I found the owner helpful and accommodating, a Dr. Jekyll version of the Mr. Hyde I had encountered in a prior visit. This business has a significant depth and breadth of inventory. For items not needed immediately, it likely would pay to shop around for price comparisons. I love it! It was PACKED with mid-grade restaurant supplies and lots of regular kitchen items for home. I had to take 3-4 passes to see it all there was so much. I wanted a pretty glass bottle and a liquor pourer for dish soap. They had that and more. Kid high-chairs for restaurants, large volume storage containers, my Vitamix blender, they have it all. Oven mits, spoons, white plates of every sort, chef clothing, salt and pepper shakers, cutie stuff and even coolers and gas ranges. Ok, I am not sure what took me so long to go here. The man behind the counter was nice and friendly, location was easy to get to off Canyon Del Rey or the first Del Monte exit. May not be for everyone but suited me very well. Really odd customer experience today at this store. I went in to buy a $200 item that I had been in touch about the day before but was told that I could pay for it today but would have to come back on Monday to pick it up. Amazed at how big this warehouse is and loved that is packed with culinary goodies. Want a Bottle Stopper to keep the bubbles as tight as possible in your Champagne? They have different colors... I got hot pink, purple and green. Why not? Althoug to be honest I've never used a bottle stopper since I end up drinking one or 2 or 3. Loking for something cute to put in your sink, I'm talking like a drain stopper like device... they have a swirly rack full of them with fun designs, like cherrys... no joke, never seen anything like it. They have some Asian plates which would be great if you are throwing your own Japanese themed dinner "Tokyo Nights", "Kyoto Flare", "Hungry Geishas", "Raw Roppongi". Random I know... but those ideas just came to my head. I love throwing dinner parties. Great to find a gift for somebody that has everything or is into cooking. Hint Hint someone... anyone... Especially during the holidays, Monterey Bay Restaurant Equipment is the best place to buy that cook in your family a new toy. This place brings me to that kid-in-a-candy-store state very easily. The front of the store is stocked mostly with items for the home cook. I've noticed a huge discount on Kitchen Aid attachments, as compared to William Sonoma and Sur La Table. Other little tools seem not to cost an arm and a leg, like at the two aforementioned establishments. For example, should a wooden spoon cost 5 bucks? No it shouldn't. I got my mom a food scale here, for baking, that was like half of what the same one costs from the mall rip-off specialists. Further beyond, the snazzy gadgets and such, they have their commercial equipment. Pretty pricey, if you don't get their industry discount. I was pretty upset to see little ramekins for like 8 bucks each. Ridiculous. That discount would have to be like 75% for me to purchase from them. They also have Hobarts in all shapes and sizes, as well as everything else you could need to outfit a commercial kitchen. I think they sell used equipment there too. I'm from San Jose, and I'll tell you, I'd rather drive here than go to the mall to buy Christmas gifts FOR SURE. Not only is it cheaper, it's a hell of a lot easier. read more

I really love cooking gadgets, so I had to check this store out. It's tucked away in Sand City (not Seaside) which was a fun adventure for someone who's just never ventured back into that industrial area. The positive points were the huge size of the store, and the variety of goods. What I didn't like was how narrow and dark the aisles are. Also the products are very dusty - I came away with black hands after my visit (yuck)! Finally many of the items I looked at had no price tags or if they had tags, they were completely illegible and faded. I ended up getting a few tools and a pan - the prices didn't seem to be any cheaper really than at the kitchen store in Gilroy. But this is closer, and I think I'd go back if I needed a gadget. read more

I wanted to like this place because of the variety of products and I was prepared to forgive the cramped warehouse feel for some good bargains. I cook a lot and use pro tools, but this place does not sell high-end stuff. And it's pricing is high. The manager is rude and sets an unwelcoming vibe so it feels like shopping in the old GUM store in Moscow back in the day. Come to think of it, it is exactly like GUM. The wares are stacked up and you think there must be a bargain, but when you talk to the staff, they put you on the defensive. Maybe go if you are dying to see Soviet-style customer service but don't actually buy something to use in your kitchen, because you would do better at a more reputable store. Being a restaurant owner in the area I occasionally stop in. Over the years we know not to get involved with this owner because his reputation in the area is not the best and his pricing is a bit over the top. After my experience yesterday I don't think I will ever go there again. Unfortunately I was in the back of the store and an employee was sent back there to check on me. It was obvious she was sent back there to see if I was stealing. I asked her if that was the case and she was honest and said yes, which I appreciated. I felt bad for her that she was sent to do that. Over the years we have spent a couple thousand dollars in the store. We are currently looking at doing a 20000-30000 remodel with equipment. Its a shame throughout the years they never made an effort to know us and our business. My partner and I definitely want to support local businesses. After being treated in this manner I am uncomfortable doing business with people who perceive their customers in this manner. please go elsewhere for your needs. Good family owner store. Always friendly over the phone and have been shopping her since I was a kid and we shopped for my parents house. Now I shop for my own needs and my employers needs! They always have what I want, and even though they are pricy it is all relative in the cooking world - you get what you pay for. I would rather spend money here than any chain in the area and even other home owned places because the value is better :) I really enjoy how they have commercial and home equipment from coffee percolators and cotton candy machines to cutting boards and decorative dishes. read more

In my 30 years in the restaurant business I've never dealt with a shadier character than the owner of this establishment. He sold me a used dough mixer; without the safety guards (illegal in the state of California as it turns out); faulty wiring, single phase motor when it was supposed to be 3 phase, etc. Refused to take it back or make any kind of adjustment despite the "30 day warranty", which isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I have to say I am simply blown away! This store not only offers every kind of kitchen accessories and equipment you could ever need but they have the prices and assistance to match. I went in to find a part for my sink and unfortunately they didn't have t in stock. When the sales associate couldn't find it she got the owner and he put everything else aside to not only find the part but order it for me. He didn't even charge me for shipping because of the inconvenience. By the time I left the store I left with presents for my kids and a wonderful experience. I own a local restaurant and like many others I got ripoff by the owner for about 7,000.00 seven thousand dollars on equipment, when I purchase the equipment I pay for TRAULSEN brand and they delivered TURBO AIR so I end up paying way more for chipper equipment and I couldn't sue him because on the receipt it only described the equipment but not the brand. There is a long list of business that got ripoff, Amir kabobs, Pico de Gallo, Rancho San Carlos, Taqueria Vallarta and many more that I know of. When his frustrations elevated he was rude abrasive and pretty much wouldn't help the client at all and threw them out to find business elsewhere. They bought a fridge from this place and the owner agreed to throw in some covers and warranty. Since my rents paid cash they asked for a receipt. They got it but didn't get the covers. When my mon went to the store to tell them she didn't get the covers the owner became aggressive and snatched the receipt from her hands saying she wasn't suppose to have that. He said he already gave her the covers when she never did. The owner is rude. He is what the world calls a bully. I wish we knew about him before because after talking to several friends they all label the owner as a, well you can fill in the blank. DO NOT trust them about the warranty because it is practically useless....we bought brand new commercial freezer with 3 year warranty. A year later, we started having issues with the freezer and asked someone to come out and take a look. We've gone to the store personally to request and made 8 phone calls, after 3 weeks they still haven't come out to take a look at it. Simply horrible.... I work as a student advisor at a non profit alternative education program in Salinas. My leadership students raised money for Dorothy's Place and have been looking forward to making their donation to help the homeless. Dorothy's Place told us they needed a rolling "chef's table" to use in their kitchen. After consulting with a local executive chef friend - he suggested looking in San Jose (at Dong Vinh Restaurant Supply) because Monterey Restaurant Supply (although closer in proximity) was "a ripoff, the worst business ever, and just terrible." Due to scheduling constraints, our group was unable to consider shopping in San Jose, so I called Monterey Restaurant Supply to inquire about their tables. From the moment my call was answered, the man on the other line was extremely rude. I have never experienced such horrible customer service right off the bat. He was condescending, even after I told him that we hoped to buy a $400 table from his company. After a minute or two of conversation, he explained that he was with a customer and if I could hold, to which I said yes. Once he came back on the line, the rudeness continued and got even worse. He said he didn't have time for my questions, and could he call me back later. I said ok and as soon as I gave him my number, he hung up on me immediately. (!??) Over an hour later, I received a call back from a different person (who left a voicemail). I was shocked and in disbelief to be treated this way as a potential customer, calling on behalf of students wanting to help their community. I will never shop here, and I encourage my friends and family to do the same. I would advise against supporting this company in any way. read more
