A WINDOWLESS motel room??? We were shocked to learn that our room (room number 8) had NO WINDOW. I complained to the management who seemed bored and uninterested. They said they were 100% booked and had no other rooms available. They acted like they were surprised our room had no window. The man at the desk said, "Really? No window? There should be one..." as if maybe I had just not found it yet and needed to look harder. I do believe that they were full and had no other rooms -- the motel was crowded with drunk, college-age people. The price was great, but now I see why. This is one of the motels furthest from downtown, and therefore has the lowest rates. It is patronized by young people who don't care because they're spending their money on partying! Good for them, but not good for people looking to get some sleep. Our windowless room also smelled badly of cigarette smoke. The "smoking area" was right outside our room and the ashtray was full of butts. Again, management was uninterested in our comfort and said only, "All our rooms are non-smoking." That didn't change how my room smelled... Finally, in the bathroom, we found left-over clothing from the occupants before us. This left us wondering how well the room had been cleaned. No surf for the Monterey Surf Inn. The short of it is that the rooms look very clean, the air/heaters are noisy, the beds are just okay and shower drain backed up daily. In Room #3, the shower drain backed up, bathroom shower tiles were falling off the wall, bathroom fan not working, cheap laminate floor is sinking on left side of the bed and there's a missing window screen to let the bugs surf in. Before I made my reservation, I called the Patels (true name, I saw the AT&T bill sitting on the lobby's counter) and asked if there was a coffee maker in the room and I was told there was one. However, when I got there, there was none in the room but one in the hotel lobby. If you don't mind rolling out of bed, looking your best and walking into the lobby to get your morning coffee, then it's all good. Similarly, if you like the loud humming of a window air conditioner /heter unit to rock you to sleep, then this is the place to book. If, on the other hand, you prefer silence on a cold Northern California night, you can simply turn off the loud humming heater and ask for an extra blanket. Although only in his early 20's, the young Patel will happily oblige and walk you right over to the garage /linen room adjacent to the lobby and give you an extra blanket, like he gave to me. The only thing you have to do is make sure it's a clean blanket. When I was handed a bunched up blanken I questioned whether it was clean. When I asked why it wasn't folded, the response was, I don't know. I had already made myself at home after only two nights, so I walked right into the garage /linen room and walked over to the shelf from where he pulled the blanket and saw that he'd pulled it out of one I f those really thin, transparent looking large trash bags in which another bunched up blanken remained. I saw neatly folded sheets on another shelf and politely asked if I could just take two sheets instead if the bunched up white blanket with the two long black hairs hangings from it. read more

Ok - maybe i shouldn't write this review since everyone seems to hate this place and we had a GREAT experience here. after i saw the glowing reviews of this place on traveladvisor.com and priceline.com, i booked my $49 room and went about my business. but after reading the reviews here on yelp, i was terrified to stay here. i was ready to walk into a horrendously gross place and was preparing myself with a speech i was going to give to my boyfriend to make it ok to sleep in the car. and then we got there!!! and let me tell you - the place didn't smell, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the walls weren't super thin, the tv was flatscreen, the temperature control worked, the continental breakfast was awesome, and we were greeted by a really lovely man who helped us immediately. it was wonderful!!! we had SUCH a great time and it was so convienentt as the street it's on leads you directly to fisherman's wharf and cannery row. i'm not sure who the people are who wrote those other reviews but they all must be super snobs when it comes to hotels. i'll let you know - for my work, i stay in beautiful expensive hotels (last one i was in was $1500 a night) and for my personal trips i go cheap but stay in clean places (i always check to see if it's aaa certified) and i spend my money on excursions, good food, etc. This place was just that. So maybe i should tell all of you that this place is horrible and disgusting so when i'm back, i can get my awesome room #18. If I can give a trophy to the crappies place in the world for lacking the most customer service a person could offer this place deserves it hands dawn. I guess let me star by saying you will NOT get you're AAA discount at this place like their website& sign up front of their building states, so there is not point of asking for it. When I asked, I was told it was already included. How is that possible if they don't know if I am an AAA member or not, they are obviously not passing out discounts for no reason. I was asked twice how many people are staying in one room, and I was pretty clear the first time that it was only two of us but the lady felt she had to ask me twice like my answer was going to change. After we settled in I went back to the front desk to ask them something, and I was told by the lady that we can't have guest over and my friend had to leave. RELAY??? If that's not bad enough, I was asked by the man to sign a hand wright en note by him witch stated "if more than two people stay in a one bed room that I will have an extra 100$ charge to my credit card" if you look at their website it states that there is a extra 20$ charge for an extra person in a room. Where the 100$ dollars came from I don't know, I guess some one is desperate to rip people off. I'm sooo furious!!! I booked this hotel online then called back 5 minutes later 3 days before my trip and tried to cancel. They told me they couldn't cancel without a manager there but they would do it as soon as they got it. I was very clear that I wasn't going to pay any charges if they neglected to not cancel. Then I called back on Friday because I got email they were not cancelled and they have a note that I called and said so problem They will cancel and absorb the fees. Now today, a day later I get another email that tonight has not been cancelled and so I'm going to owe for both days. I'm in the phone for the third time and they have had me on hold for ten minutes telling me the same things!!! I'm so upset right now. My family and I came to stay here & when we walked into the room it had a musty smell, there are no lamps, only in ceiling lights that are too bright Also there is no closet. The breakfast room is very tiny, it only has 2 tables so plan on taking your food to the room to eat. They have cereal, toast, waffles, orange juice, milk, and danishes. The rooms seem fairly recently painted but are not well maintained as the paint is chipped in several places and the toliet actually moved when we sat on it! The bathrooms have had a recent update so are pretty decent. The musty smell in the rooms (we had 2 rooms) seems to be caused by inadequate ventilation because when someone is in the shower all the windows steam up and there is no fan. There was also a bucket under the sink to catch the water that is dripping from the leaking plumbing! In reading the other reviews i see that someone else noticed this too, so it goes without saying that the owners don't give a crap and know there is a problem but won't correct it. Par for the course of a motel at this price are very thin walls that let so much noise in when your neighbor is showering it sounds like the space shuttle is taking off. The room decor is odd by American standards, dark brown/black checkered carpet, and golden comforter. We wont be staying here again that goes without saying. Edit: we spoke with the owner about the problems we experienced and asked to be moved, she said that they had one room with a single queen bed and two seconds later said that the house keeper was gone and she could not change us because we have been in the room already for ten minutes...!!! Then she offered to move us to a different room tomorrow.....but we are checking out tomorrow. Lovely. read more

Owner retain $70 from out of my $400 dollar reservation total even though I called 3 days before to cancel due to Carnivorous. Upshot is I not only cancelled my flight MY airline cancelled my flight-so there was no physical way of me being there. When I called him and told him my credit card had not been credited (like another Monterey business did for my no show.) he said I had to work through my bank to get the credit..I did less the $70 he retained because...I SPENT A NIGHT!!! Four stars because I got what I paid for and the extreme effort by the owners/managers. Clean and that's what counts at this price. An issue I had was immediately dealt with. Slight language barrier is okay because the workers want to understand so ultimately it works out. Please check the dates of the posted pictures so most of the stuff has been rectified. This place has been remodeled, albeit by do it yourself work. The landscape is cute, cozy, and even, adorable. Amenities that are noteworthy are surprisingly lush towels, hot fresh coffee at 7:00 am. As I walked to the local Mall (very nice mall) I looked in the other hotel offices and they had at least store bought pastries and dried cereal & milk, coffee/tea. Not having a complimentary breakfast is a big deal to us. Especially since most motels/hotels provide at least a continental breakfast. 2.5 stars. This motel is what it is: cheap beach motel. This is a good motel to stay in if you are looking for the cheapest option to lay your head. My husband picked it out because it was the cheapest place with vacancies; I would have spent an extra $20-30 for a slightly nicer motel. The shower worked fine, the bed was decent, the TV had basic DirectTV, and there was a good-sized mini fridge in the room. My husband and I both woke up with small red bites on our legs, and when I pulled the sheets back I found a flea in our bed. I guess one single flea is better than bedbugs, but I think we'll be looking elsewhere for our next visit to Monterey. read more

If I could give this place less than zero stars I would. I booked two nights at this hotel, over Hotels.com, for $400 dollars. So off the bat, it's very expensive. When I arrived, the man at the desk was polite and asked to see my I.D and credit card. I obliged, he checked my name off of a list and he gave both back and had me sign a paper about finding damage and paying for them, etc etc. Only after that point, after looking at my I.D. and giving it back.. did he mention that there was a "policy about renting rooms to people under 21". The policy is that you have to have a parents permission. You cannot call them, you must have them send a picture of their I.D and credit card (Yeah right) over email to the hotel. This was not stated in any terms and conditions on the site of the hotel, Hotels.com and when I asked for a copy of the hotels policy, the man at the front desk could not even comprehend that basic English. I explained to him that I am stationed across the country from my parents and that they are asleep, 3 hours ahead. And even so, as I am a LEGAL ADULT IN THE US MILITARY, my parents do not need to be aware of my every move. He calls the manager, speaking his native language (of course) and then tells me that there is no exception. At which point, I accept that I will not be staying at the hotel and ask for a refund. Here is where this place goes from bait and switch tactics, to fraud. I talk on the phone with the manager myself and he says that it is impossible for him to refund me since I booked through Hotels.com. Directly after that, I exit the building and call the customer service line of Hotels.com where they tell me in exact words that they cannot offer a refund, that the owner has to do so. Therefore, this business not only uses bait and switch tactics to lure people in, only to refuse service unless they abide by archaic policies that target single females... they also lie and steal. If you're thinking about staying here... don't. I have filed a claim against this business through Hotels.com and am in the process of filing a complaint through the Better Business Bureau. read more

Not the worst motel I've ever been in, but far off the mark from the glowing reviews on TripAdvisor. (The proprietor's responses to the positive reviews were cut and paste jobs - should have been my first clue). We're used to cheap, family-friendly motels, so I'm not complaining about false advertising. But service and lighting were grim. The much-vaunted waffle breakfast was no big deal and everything else screamed budget. I do not know enough about the economics of running a motel. I do not know how Monterey Surf Inn compares to all the other budget motels on Munras. Perhaps thin coffee and Jergen's soap are standard for motels of this class and location. But I do know that for about the same price, I've had much better experiences, more hospitality, warmth and charm (e.g. a well-edited VCR movie collection, friendly advice about area attractions) elsewhere. Next time, I'll spend the extra dollars. read more

The bed linens had stains. The air conditioner didn't wouldn't cool down the room and made a high pitch noise so we didn't sleep much. The shower didn't drain. The free coffee was just water. If I could give zero stars I would. For a non-smoking room it smelled like smoke. I could live with that considering the price. However, not a few minutes in the room my sister killed a earwig ON THE BED. It was one of many bugs and my sister is very germaphobic so we asked for a different room. There was not any which was understandable but the guy at the front desk was incredibly rude. We stayed that night since we had no where else to go. When we left we wanted a refund or at least a better discount than 20% considering the room had bugs in it and was otherwise very dirty. When we complained he said almost to the word that you can't have high expectations for the price. My expectation was not to have to kill bugs on the bed I'm supposed to sleep on. read more

I'm visiting from out of town and this place is great. I've stayed around each time I visit and avoided this place because the price seemed too good. I'm from the Bay Area and a place this cheap is a bad place. But I figured I'd slum it. When I got here I was blown away that it was actually nice. I'm not talking about four star nice but for the price it's great. The customer service is great. The place is clean. They use wood cleaner on plastic which isn't great but it's not dirty like some other post I read. Can't beat the deal. read more

Not a secure facility. There is no latch locks on the inside of the room doors to protect someone on the outside of the room from entering. These doors have modern magnetic key card tap locks for getting inside of the room. These locks can easily be reset and/or a different key can open these doors. A stranger can easily enter your room.There is no security cameras. Stay at a place that is more visibly secure, or sleep with one eye open. read more

WARNING! BEWARE! THIS PLACE IS A NON-REFUNDABLE RIPOFF! Luckily, since I was not familiar with this place, I booked only one night, through Hotels.com, of a planned four night stay in Monterey. Within 5 minutes of having entered the room, I decided not to stay and booked elsewhere. There was much disrepair and smelled and looked unclean. The cheap flooring was lifting, the towel bar was barely hanging from the wall, the tile floor in the bathroom looked real dirty and there was a hair in the sink. All indications of not having been cleaned properly. Because the booking said no refunds, the owner refused to give me one. Hotels.com could not get me a refund either even though their system showed that I had booked elsewhere. Live and Learn. The next time I need to book a motel without knowing the conditions and which states no refund, I will book directly by credit card. That way, if I refuse to stay, I can place a hold on payment with proof that I stayed elsewhere. From my experience, I agree with all the negative reviews listed here. This is a great CHEAP place to stay in Monterey. The rooms are clean and taken care of very nicely. The beds are comfortable. Pillows are a personal thing for me so I bring my own often. This is a single floor old motor lodge style building that has been redone and is great. The rooms with two queens are a little tight, but they make great use of the limited space. I will be staying here again for sure. read more

We stayed here the night of New Year's Eve. We got a one bedroom room for $55 and booked it like two days before which was pretty perfect for what we were looking for. The office smelled terrible and we were really worried that the room would smell the same but it didn't thankfully. The place is cute and recently remodeled with nice flatscreen televisions and other ammenties. The walls are paper thin. We didn't sleep well because we could hear the people doing the nasty in the room next to us all night. Also, the showers are impossible to figure out. We had to hunt down a maid to show us how to use them. There is a nice outdoor mall right down the street and the beach is a few miles away. Oh my, oh my! Where do I start with this place. It looks pretty neat on the outside, 5 minute drive to Fisherman's Warf and nice workers. Now, the bad parts: the walls are thin so at 7am I can hear my neighbors having sex with the bed squeaking. But the worst part about this place is that there is NO ventilation. When you walk in the room, it smells like MOLD and our sink was leaking with a bucket on the floor to catch whatever gunk from the sink. When I say no ventilation, the room was just stuffy and after taking a shower there was no vent to circulate the steamy air. Thank goodness there was AC to somewhat make it better. After we left this place, I opened up my suitcase and it smelled like Mold from the motel and it just felt dirty and moist. I dont know about their normal price but during a three day weekend it sure is a place that is overpaid and NOT worth your $$$. Thank goodness we only had to stay there for one night. read more

After booking a two night stay because every where else was full...I was dreading what I was going to find upon my arrival. .....It wasn't bad at all. Previous reviewers got some real chips on their shoulders. I will say that the room does not smell like home, so I brought my favorite candle which alleviated any nasal concerns. I was able to get a room for $55/night for 2 nights via Expedia. Of course, I was a little trepidacious since this was clearly a motel but I read all the other positive Expedia reviews and took a chance. For the price I got it for, I was impressed. Not too long ago, I ended up in another motel for $70/night and it was really run down with such thin walls that I heard our neighbor's entire conversation for the whole night. This motel went for a cheaper rate, was much closer to Cannery Row and the wharf, and was much cleaner than the other one. There's no carpet, which is a plus since carpet usually tends to contribute to musty smells in most motel rooms. We had a microwave and a fridge available and a good size flat screen TV. My only complaints about this place, knocking it down one less star, have to do with the crappy internet connection, the fact that the AC goes on and off, and the lack of channels. Other than that, would most definitely stay here again. This place is well maintained and a definite bargain at $55/night! read more

They are bait and swich con artist. I went online to booking.com seen a rate of $49, givein I used to own 120 hotel rooms in Pacific Grove I went directly to the property versus booking online to save them the booking commission. For that I was told I can't have the $49 right but I could have $55. Beware when you book with this property online, they charge a $10 service fee, which the woman at the front desk told me I would not be paying given I walked in trying to do whats best for them. Then the $55 turned into $71+ with tax I asked her how is that possible, she assured me it was not paying the $10 service. For one they provide zero services. She told me to work it out with the owner in the morning but four or five times told me I was not paying the $10 service fee. In the morning the very unbelievably rude owner told me "it's a service fee tough" in those words. I said the what services I didn't book it online your Wi-Fi doesn't even work and you don't have breakfast, you don't have room service you have no services. He just keep saying every guest booked online or not pays the $10 service fee he assured me every single guest paid it. I know that's not true. He's an absolute crook! read more
