Very dirty and Poor Service. Walked in and stood in an almost empty restaurant for 5 minutes awaiting being seated. Not even acknowledged. Then hostess points to a table and says we can sit there. Floors were filthy with old food. Sat down and after waiting 5 more minutes to order a drink we decided to leave and went down the road 1 mile and had a great dinner and service at Another Mexican restaurant. read more

I came to Knoxville worrying that I would never find another Mexican restaurant that had great service and great food. Alas, my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this glorious restaurant. The salsa is always fresh. We make a joke saying we never know what it will taste like because it could be extremely spicy one day or a little sweeter. We love this restaurant and eat at it frequently. My favorite is the chicken/steak fajita nachos. We are moving a few months, and now I worry I will never find a "Monterrey's" in my new city. read more

The food and drinks were equally horrible. Watered down margaritas and food with no flavor. Tried to address the issue and was told it was MY fault and that no one else had complained when there were at least 2 other tables in the 30 minutes we were there that sent stuff back. Our waiter didn't even check on us other than to set our food down. Will never be going back and telling others not to go there. Taco Bell would have been a better choice. Now I've been to shitholes before but this one reigns supreme. I was misled by the good reviews only to stumble upon this "nice" little hole in the wall. I was seated immediately and the food came out quick probably cause everything was already made then drenched in red sauce. Our server was lupe or Francesca or something like that whatever... Appears fly ginger ale doesn't exist and sprite means a side of green sauce that we never got... While I was eating I could feel my stomach instantly prepping my ass for a rough road ahead. The decor of morbidly obese people present didn't exactly help the ambiance either. After all was said and done I figured how can you mess up sopapillas? NO WRONG it's like they wiped their ass with tortilla chips and threw some honey and sugar on there. Eureka! We finally found a good Mexican restaurant in our area. We had tried a few others and been very disappointed. One night we were craving Mexican and when we saw how packed out their parking lot was, we decided to give it a try. You seat yourself, which we liked. The chips were warm and fresh. As we looked over the menu, the prices were very affordable. We always order sour cream and cilantro to go with our salsa and chips. Some restaurants don't have cilantro - there's does. I ordered the nachos with fajita meat and extra white cheese. My husband ordered a chimichanga platter with white cheese melted on top that came with rice and beans. Both were delicious! We especially enjoyed the lightly cooked refried beans with white cheese melted on top. So many Mexican restaurants serve you over-cooked dark refried beans. Theirs wasn't. Our waitress was very attentive. She tried to serve us exactly what we ordered and came back several times just to check on us. She even gave us a sample of their white cheese sauce. As we were leaving, we met the owner who was a real friendly guy who knows his business. (The only reason we gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is because Chuy's is our favorite Mexican restaurant just because of their fresh tortillas the cooks make by hand right in front of you. But Chuy's isn't in our neighborhood. Monterey Mexican Restaurant is - and we'll be back.) read more

My husband & I usually agree on restaurants, except when it comes to Mexican. I like really authentic & he prefers a more Tex Mex Americanized kinda place. We both loved our meals! He got the #11 combo, all ground beef (God love him:))& I got chilaquiles with green sauce. Both were so good! It's a busy place, but the service was excellent. We'll definitely be back! read more

Horrible food. Food was served cold- they screwed up a cheese quesadilla takes a lot of talent to do that. Quesadilla had cold cheese that hadn't melted. Beans and rice were bland. Margarita was cheap sour mix and nothing else. Taco Bell would have been a better alternative. Don't waste your time and miney going here, so many better alternatives. read more

First and last time we will ever be here. Ordered takeout for the family, should have just cancelled it from the beginning based on how rude the guy who took our order was. Got there, same guy from the phone and still acting like a jerk. Get home with the food (which was all shoved in one bag) and the salsa had exploded all over the rest of the food because everything was SO crammed in the bag... found a black hair in the salsa, everyone in my family is blonde so it was none of ours. Then, found a chicken bone shard in our chimichanga. This is your typical greasy Mexican restaurant, and there are so many better options in the Knoxville area. Been here many times but the last few times it has not been good. Tonight the bus boy that brings the salsa spilled it all over our table and our feet. He was very apologetic and this was the best of the service we received all evening. Waited for clean up about ten minutes before someone else moved us to another table. Had to wait another ten minutes for the new waiter to take our order. After waiting longer than normal for our food to be brought out, we then had to wait for our silverware. We are usually in and out of there in about 45 minutes. Tonight we were here for an hour and 45 minutes and they weren't any busier than usual. I ordered the flautas and two out of three were burnt with one boarder line burnt. When I pointed it out to the waiter and telling him I wasn't going to eat that, because it was black and charred, I was brought one flauta on a dish with nothing else on it. The service was terrible and there was no apology for the wait, the burnt food nor the salsa that was spilled all over us...not from the waiters nor the management. (The poor bus boy was falling all over himself apologizing and I felt bad for him because I knew he was embarrassed) When we went to the register to pay, we voiced our displeasure with the service and that we would not be returning. The only thing the manager said was " You are y coming back? Ok then fine." And he threw away our bill as if to say he really didn't care that we had been patrons for 15 years. It is obvious they don't care about their customers and I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone unless you want terrible service and burnt food. read more

Diner beware. Food was good but the person ringing me up tried to overcharge me for multiple items. The bill was about $15-$20 higher than what it should have been ($42 instead of $25). When I asked for a breakdown of the hand written receipt the cashier just started handing me money (and I had not even paid yet). Pretty obvious he knew he was caught and just wanted me out of the way. He was obviously making up prices as he tallied up the hand written receipt and he wanted to get me out of there fast once I called him on it. By the time I got to the parking lot I realized there were a few other items he overcharged me for and went back in. Once again he handed me more money hoping I would get out of there before others picked up on the issue. He should have corrected all of the made up prices right away rather than waiting to be called on each item he overcharged me for before giving me the menu price.
