They were super nice, my pants were ready exactly when they said, and they look professionally done. They even pressed them for me. It wasn't cheap ($27) but poorly done alterations will ruin a suit. This is where I go for most of my basic alterations. They do a great job, are extremely friendly and very trustworthy. There have been times I have asked to have things done, for example, taking in the sides of a blousy dress shirt, and they told me not to do it, because it wouldn't look right due to an issue with the arm hole placement. Great service - I take everything there because I have a build that requires alterations in the waist of every pair of pants I buy. Peter Lim is a genius with scissors, a needle and thread. Their prices are a little stiff, but I calculate that into the price of clothes when I buy them, and it's not too bad. He can even re-attach the original hem of DENIM for folks with short legs (like me) who want the pants to be adequately shortened without looking cheesy and "folded over." I highly recommend their work, I only wish it were a bit less expensive. read more

AMAZING! Another tailor ruined three very expensive pieces of clothing (see review of Alice's Tailors in Washington, DC) and I was sure no one would be able to fix them. However, Montgomery Custom Tailor completely salvaged two out of the three, which are now pretty much as good as new. The third piece is also at least wearable. They did a good job on my pants but I just did not like their customer service, they are very rude if you ask them several questions. When I called for a price check for a couple pants, some man answered "why you calling?" And hung up. When in store they try to rush you so you can leave. They should shouldn't be like that even if they been in business for 30 years idc they still got to value the customer. read more

My husband and I have taken probably 30 items to Montgomery Custom Tailor for altering over the last several years. I've got nothing but praise for the quality of the work. Suit tailoring is fabulous, dresses reconstructed, waists of pants taken down many sizes. The folks who work there are friendly and knowledgeable. My only hessitation is sometimes serious alterations get a bit pricey. But I usually swallow my pride, know that they have skills way beyond those I'll ever have, and they deserve to be well compensated for their great work. If you need a tailor in the area with good hours, high quality and relatively quick work, I'd go to them in a heartbeat. read more

It's a nice mom and pop with good customer service. I went in to have 3 pairs of pants hemmed. The woman had me get the pants on and did the measurements herself. Her methods left me feeling confident, unlike some other tailors I have been to. The price was $17/pant for hemming. While on the slightly higher side, it was worth it for the experience. read more

These guys are great. I brought three suit jackets in, two that needed mending (loose button, torn lining) and one new one that I wanted their take on for alterations. They took the two old jackets to the back, then had two people come out to look me over in the new one. They could have suggested a million dollars in alterations but instead told me honestly (and correctly) they liked the fit and that I should leave it alone. Best part - by the time I was changed, the other jackets were done. And they had fixed ALL the buttons on one of them, not just the loosest one I'd noticed, because they thought those might come loose soon too. read more

They are friendly and do fantastic work. I had two bridesmaids dresses altered here. I have a very petite figure and both dresses had to be altered drastically. I was really worried that in the end the dresses wouldn't look like the original style. However, MCT pulled through and essentially made me the perfect "mini" versions that I needed. They have really great service, I've gotten the sleeves shortened on a blazer and a jacket from here and they do an excellent job. They even did next day service, with no additional cost. However, the price is quite high for what it is, $34 dollars each time. This might be because I'm quite young and they assume I can afford it if I'm paying to get something tailored at all, but I'm confident about the final product whenever I go in. read more

I bought a dress in to see if the neckline could be raised. The lady handled my dress roughly and said that nothing could be done. Fair enough. She then dismissed me and told me to go shop at forever21 to find clothes that would fit me instead. I thought that the whole point of tailoring was that garments that are too large/small could be altered to fit the customer. I had high hopes that my dress could be tailored but am just disappointed that I was dismissed rather rudely the way I was. Almost all reviews I've read about this place have been so positive so I am confused why this happened. read more

I was quoted $78 for narrowing a coat for half an inch on both sides. No other alterations, just a simple fitment. They didn't even need to touch the sleeves. Of course I declined, and took the coat to a nearby tailor. Their quote for the same work was $45. read more

I'm SO relieved to see that I am not the only one who had the same AWFUL EXPERIENCE AT MONTGOMERY CUSTOM TAILOR - I have never complained about any business or its service so this is an absolute exception for me. I had marked the length of the sleeves based on that of my other suits and when I tried it on and pointed it out as a guideline, the rude woman pulled everything apart and said she couldn't help me and walked off. RUDE RUDE RUDE... Also (like the other customer) I brought in a garment that they said they would not fix due to the type of tailoring that had been done on the original piece. (I accepted this and asked for a referral to someone who might do that type of work - and of course, I got none). PRICING WAS EVEN WORSE...ESPECIALLY IF THEY DECIDE THEY DON'T WANT TO HELP YOU. After going through the very rude experience, I asked the woman to tally everything up, which she did and then said to me...MAYBE YOU CANNOT AFFORD THIS SO YOU GO AWAY AND THINK ABOUT IT. OK - great - so now after going through the craziness with these folks - I"M BEING INSULTED??? I COULD afford the charges, HOWEVER, the price was quite high by other tailors standards. But against my better judgement, I accepted it and left. Fortunately, minutes later, I saw someone in the mall who had been in there at the same time as me, picking up and paying for similar alterations. SO I stopped and asked them what they had paid for the same type of alternations. GUESS WHAT? THE WOMAN HAD DOUBLED THE PRICE FOR MY ALTERATIONS!!! SO - I returned to the store, retrieved my clothing immediately, and FILED A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. read more

I usually alter my own clothes at home but for the more complicated jobs, MCT does really wonderful work. The last time, I bought a beautiful silk dress for just a few dollars at an overstock seller, the problem was that it was 2 sizes too large. I was measured and out the door in 10 minutes. MCT altered the dress within a few days and the work was perfect - a difficult job sewing slinky silk on the bias. The fit was perfect for me and the price was very reasonable. They are also very friendly and professional. I am going back today with two more jackets and a dress to alter. read more

Paid $18 bucks for an alteration. Told me it would be ready in 30 minutes.I told them I would pick up later or next day. Sent my teenage son to pick up the next day. Charged him $20 for not picking up the day before.Will deal with them later when I have time to swing by their shop, but what a bunch of thieves!!!! read more

I'm reasonably handy with needle and thread and usually try to hem pants myself but jeans are always a problem. I decided that to finally bite the bullet and pay to get them hemmed. I took in two pairs: one where I requested the original hem be replaced (for an extra $5) and the other just a regular hem. Both were done beautifully, with perfectly matched thread. The lady asked when I needed them done and when I said it didn't matter she said they would be ready in 5 days. Seems like a nice family run business and there were plenty of customers when I was there. Park near Macy's to get in and out quick. read more

been coming here for a few years now and has been my go-to place for all alterations. they've always been friendly, courteous and willing to work w/my timeframes. i try to go during the week but no matter when i go i've had great service (unlike the other reviewers). types of alterations: - jeans: original hemming.. perfect job each time! I once even brought in a pair of jeans that a previous tailor screwed up (long story but just had basic hemming) - i went ahead and brought the pair of jeans in (along w/some old jeans that i was going to throw away to use the original hemming).. but mentioned if not urgent, she'd wait to see if any other of her alterations that weren't being used to get a more appropriate color/match for the ones i brought in. couple weeks later.. jeans looked good as new!! - Suits: all aspects of making a suit for that perfect custom/tailor look - overcoats - taking some older items in to either bring them in.. or out (within reason of course!)! ;) i'll continue to go/recommend this place!! my 1 small gripe that which i should give this place a 4.75 out of 5 is that the prices have gone up a bit.. but honestly, nothing beats having your clothes fit true to your body/shape.. especially if you're forking out large amounts of $$ for them! read more

i love this tailor. found them way back in 1993 while working at the j.crew in the mall. we took all store alterations there, and sent customers there, too. besides being friendly and kind, these folk are efficient, the prices are average and the work is quality. whenever i take a garment somewhere else for tailoring (in a pinch), i'm disappointed more often than not, and wish I'd just gone halfway around the beltway to montgomery tailors! so worth it. they're the only tailors i recommend in this area. read more

The best!!!!! I took a bridesmaid dress to be altered and they did it within the week! While this may seem unimpressive, my dress was 4 sizes too big and needed to be custom fit to my 7 month pregnant shape! A HUGE job! When I went to do my final fitting, it was PERFECT! So comfortable and beautiful - and fitted in all the right areas! I put them through the ringer with my request and they did it with huge smiles on their faces. I have been using this tailor now for over 5 years. The man and woman here are always super friendly, polite, and willing to do anything to clothes that I need: replacing pockets I didn't like, tailoring suits, fixing buttons, fixing a hole in a cashmere sweater that appears seamless, fixing my old favorite pair of cargo shorts that got a hole in the crotch, etc. Whether it was an expensive suit tailoring or something very minor, they have consistently come through flawlessly for me. We received poor customer service from this business. First, we weren't greeted when we walked in and weren't engaged. We made an inquiry about a custom made blazer and we were told the price was $1500. We proceeded to ask about the craftmanship (to see what was driving the price) so we asked whether it was full canvas and what type of fabric was being used. We were told the craftmanship that goes into making the blazer was partially canvas and off brand Italian fabric. We asked about the fabrics that were in the book on the counter and the clerk without saying no, refused to show them to us. We attempted to show the clerk the type of fabric pattern we were looking for to see if he had anything similar, but he refused to look and told us to come back in February when he get the new books. The problem with that is we weren't ever given the opportunity to show him what we wanted. It was almost as if he didn't want our business. The experience was disappointing. read more

I went here to have a skirt hemmed after it was recommended by a friend. I'd read the good reviews here, but I was a little shocked at the cost. They charged me $25 to have the skirt hemmed. It's just a basic black skirt, from Banana Republic, unlined. I think the fabric is some rayon/viscose blend. Is that a normal price? The owners seem nice and pretty competent, but I feel like I just got ripped off. read more
