So I had heard that this Tailor was good, but that the woman owner was a little crazy. You might get her on a good day and she was nice, or you would get her on a bad day and she would just say no I can't do it. I took a dress in and sure enough it must've been a bad day because she basically did not even look at it. It had a bumpy seam in the bottom where from a previous alteration it got sewn up incorrectly. I asked if she could make the seam smoother. She didn't even look. She said return it to the store where you bought it. I said no this is from a previous alteration, I just think that part needs to be resewn. She said take it back to them. I said I don't really want to because they did this in the first place. She said take it to Nordstrom. I said they are better tailors than you? She said, I can't fix, and then started to walk away. Meanwhile, she still had never really even looked at it. Totally insane. How can you have a tailoring business that just says no. It is exactly what happened to my friend when she took some pants to be tailored. Just a super weird no to a normal tailoring job. Meanwhile, not a soul in the store and tons of suits and jackets and shirts. I would assume she would at least be nice to people as a way to draw in business. I was going to ask her if they had a man's tuxedo shirt (I need one for the same event as this dress is for), I wanted to get him a really nice quality one. But after that treatment. I just turned around and left and went to Nordstroms. What a shock they were super pleasant and helpful and I found just what I needed. And I spent $260. Unless their shirts are over $300, she would've had a customer, and a potential customer for the future, as he is very difficult to fit. read more

Amazing work by the master tailor/seamstress herself! Very quick turnaround time for a hemming and an overall dress resizing (bought an L when I usually wear S for an off-season dress), it was dropped off on a Friday and ready for pickup by Tuesday. I got to try on the pieces before paying, and the grand total for all this work was $78! Come here if you want affordable but HIGH QUALITY work on any of your favorite pieces - you won't be disappointed! Also customer service was A+++ - super friendly husband and wife (the tailor) who run this store that has been in Montgomery Mall for decades! I just returned after picking up three pants and a shirt from MCT. The shirt sleeves needed to be shortened and the pants needed repair which we agreed would be challenging. In all cases, the work quality was impressive and the price, fair. In today's world of poor customer service and work that frequently isn't done right the first time, MCT is an exception. For the past 6 years, I've had all my tailoring done there and I've always been impressed with their work (I believe it's a husband/wife team...she runs the business and he's the tailor...both are exceptional). I haven't had much luck with tailors in the Bethesda/Chevy Chase area. My usual tailor (did a middling job, but it was convenient) closed, and the one I went to ignored most of my requests (didn't take in the inseam like I had asked). I was at the mall a few weeks ago and realized they had a tailor shop near where I had parked my car, so I decided to go in blindly. They couldn't have been nicer or warmer when I walked in. I had 5 pairs of pants and 2 jackets I had been carrying around (the other shop someone had recommended was still closed, but I figured I'd keep them in the car just in case.) It was a big order, but they cheerfully accepted it -- and carefully re-measured each item. I've been to many tailors where they take a "one size fits all" approach and assume that marking up one garment will guide them on each additional item, but each one I had required vastly different tailoring. Now, I'll say this: I definitely paid handsomely for the order. But after discovering by talking to Lisa that a colleague of mine goes there regularly, he told me it was worth it -- and was it ever! A customer was yelling and being rude at us for absolutely no good reason at all.Telling us to get the hell out of the store and what made things worse was when the store manager told us not to say anything right after he left because he's a l customer. First and foremost, this review is long overdue as my family and I have been frequenting Montgomery Customer Tailor for our tailoring and alteration needs (herein after referred to as MCT) for the last 7 years. To say that Montgomery Custom Tailor is a bit out of my way, is an understatement as I live in the Northern Virginia area. Please know that without hesitation or reservation I gladly take that loop around the beltway to obtain tailoring/alteration services from this establishment that offers exemplary "Best in Class" customer service, coupled with a quality of workmanship that is no less than outstanding! Montgomery Custom Tailor is unique in that they have a genuine, extremely gracious and patient demeanor, which Lisa and her team of Tailors provides without equal as soon as the Customer enters the establishment. On a recent visit to MCT, I accompanied my sister to assist her in obtaining alterations on numerous clothing articles. My sister is learning challenged and Lisa immediately recognized her limitations and treated her with the utmost respect and care as she spoke with her directly on her alteration needs. As this was my sister's first vist to MCT, no sooner than we left out my sister was so very happy that Lisa was so very kind and respectful of her needs. Needless to say, I was not surprised. MCT is well in tuned with current and classic styles which can be a challenge to find in this industry. The prices are extremely competitive and the turnaround time for pickup is very reasonable and competitive with the marketplace. They are located inside the Westfield Mall (Formerly Montgomery Mall). As you exist Macys and enter the mall, they are your first left within the mall area, on the same side as Claire's. I had previously gone to another store that I found on yelp and they have proven not to be reliable and overpriced. I saw pretty decent reviews for this place and I decided I might as will try out since it's on my way to work. I paid about $100 for a suit that was on sale about 80%... And it only needed minor alterations. The people that work here are very nice and very patient, you will rarely see this and most tailor shops because they care more about the bottom line than the quality of service for the customer and what they care about. They were very understanding and took the time to answer all of my questions as well as address any of my needs. The other place told me it would cost nearly $300 which was absurd. When I came here they told me it would be $77 for the minor alterations and I decided to give them a benefit of a doubt to see the quality of their work. All I can say is that I'm extremely satisfied with the suit as fits perfectly and I love it. That does not mean that they don't deserve 5 stars, I'm just a little skeptical on the price I was charged because of the other reviews I saw on yelp and what they charge other people. I had a moth hole in cashmere pants that I asked them to fix, if possible. I SPECIFICALLY said that I did NOT want pants altered (taken in) and wanted hole fixed with material from seam. They did exactly what I did NOT want and now the pants fit differently. The hole is gone, but the pants fall wrong and I am pissed. If u can't do it , don't say u can and take my $$. They did a terrible job on a prom dress. The dress is ruined totally! They made the straps shorter so it does not fall off the shoulder, but it was pulled up from the front so the front of dress looks awful now! And the sleeves are too small and uncomfortable. I had to buy another dress, last minute! The woman helping us said multiple times, the dress is too wide, what do you want me to do? REALLY????? You are the tailor, you are supposed to know what to do! Why are you asking me?!?!? If you can't do it, then just say so! I WILL NEVER go back. They need to have better customer relations rather and pay more attention to what the customer is asking for. She was so distracted by other customers as I was talking to her about what I need. Until she disagreed with the length of my white Banana Republic pants, and I'm stuck wearing them with flip flops now.... Kidding. Well, not really. You just went to Montgomery mall and bought the newest flare jeans from arden b. or bebe or where ever. Since all the fitting models for these clothing company is 5 feet and bazillion inches tall, you are dragging around your pants that's 10 inches too long. Now what? Go to the bottom floor next to Macy's and the movie theatre (huh, Montgomery Mall has a movie theatre?, yup, they sure do!) and next to the nail salon (ok, I'm not good with directions...) there's your savior. Just pop in--drop off you pants and go eat upstairs (or shop for more clothes) and in an hour voila! your pants are done. Side Notes: 1. Depending on work you may have to wait few days. 2. When shortening jeans. Make sure to ask for "original hem" and specifically ask to match the thread color exactly. 3. If you are fishing for discount, talk to the Pop rather than the Mom. I was ina wedding, the suit was sent to me, it was about 17 sizes too small ( I may have been a little bit misleading about my waist size). I was gutted as it was a smokin' Boss suit and better than my usual ragamuffin selection. I took it to Nordstrom wondering if I could do a swap - no joy - but they recommended these guys who did a fantastic job. Oh yeah - and my best man's speech was brilliant, if I do say so myself. Definitely a 5 star experience. I called at 9am Thursday morning to see if they could do same day hemming on a dress and a pair of pants (I was catching a flight in the afternoon so needed it quickly). The gentleman on the phone said yes, and in 30 minutes I was at his shop. He was already working on something but stopped his project to help me. I wore the two items and he took the measurements, and told me to come back in one hour. Even though they seemed busy, the items were ready when I returned. Pros: Quick service Friendly environment Cons: No specifications for what I was paying for on my receipt (I didn't ask either, so more of a personal preference) I bought a suit from Jcrew that needed some tailoring. I came in on a Thursday night around 8 pm. I got my pants hemmed and my jacket fitted (arms shortened, and back was given more shape). I got measured, paid for the alterations, and was out in about 15 minutes. The lady asked if Saturday morning was okay, I told her that was fine, but she asked me when I'd be wearing the suit. I told her I'd wear it on Saturday and she told me to come in the next day at 6 pm. I came in the next day and it was ready to go. My experience was painless and smooth. Horrible horrible experience. I had two brand new suit jackets altered. The first fitting took literally 7 minutes which made me suspicious. How could a jacket get fitted that quickly? I was very clear regarding what fixes I wanted made to the jacket and they assured me they would take care of it. When I came to pickup the jackets they both looked terrible. Lots of puckered areas on the back of the jacket. Looked like the two sides of the jacket were sewn unevenly and the material was pulling. They told me that was normal -- which of course is ridiculous. Those puckered areas were not there when I delivered the jackets. When I persisted they blamed my posture. I have been buying suits for over 35 years. This was a new excuse which I never heard before. I insisted they fix the problem so they reluctantly agreed. When I came back the second time the jackets were even worse -- I thought one of the jackets might be ruined beyond repair. Now the excuse was that they had done a lot of work on the jackets and they thought they looked great. It was so outlandish to hear their opinion in the face of jackets that had pulls, wrinkles and puckers all over the front, side and back of the garments. I went to a second tailor who couldn't believe what she saw. She opened up the jackets and showed me the poor quality work -- uneven stitching, sloppy cuts/seams and the use of paste/tape to hold the lining in. She spent over an hour fitting me. I will write a second review for this excellent tailor. I am aggressively disputing the expensive charge Montgomery Custom Tailors insisted on collecting. They refused to work with me on a credit. Bottom line - maybe they can handle simple stuff like cuffs or hemming but anything complicated seems to be way beyond there ability to handle. read more

Reading all the great reviews on here led me to bring in two pairs of designer jeans to be hemmed, a dress that needed the shoulders taken up, and a dress with a strap that needed mending. These tailors did a great job with all the alterations, and had them done within a week. It sounded like they could have finished sooner but I told them I was not in a rush. They also expertly replaced the original hem on the jeans when they shortened them. It wasn't cheap, however I don't mind paying a premium for high quality work. I am kind of short and need alterations on a lot of clothing, so I am glad to have found a reliable place! read more

Rarely do you find a business like this anymore. Came in with 2 suits that needed to be altered. One was way too small, and I thought I needed to return it. But the owner simply smiled at me and said "I can take care of that" WOAH. He let out the seams in the pants, and BOOM, a perfectly fitted suit that looks like it was made for me. The cost was about $90 per suit. NOT BAD considering he completely changed the shape and cut of both suits. They fit like a glove, and I WILL come back for more! I used Montgomery Custom Tailor once before and thought they did a nice job for a reasonable price on a pair of dress pants. Today I went to get jeans hemmed and could not believe how rude the woman was. I asked how much and she quoted $16. Then I asked how much to keep the original bottom and she said $27. I asked why such a big difference in price and she became very rude. All I wanted was an explanation. I took my jeans and left and I will never return again. I have never given only one star before, but I want to impress upon people not to waste their time and get treated so horribly. After seeing good reviews here, I brought a few items in. When I walked in and the woman saw that I had more than one item, she started yelling at me -- yes, actually yelling -- that Saturday is their busy day and I should just leave and come back on Monday. I explained that because of my work schedule and how far away this place is, I could only go on a weekend. When I tried on a dress and asked the man how much it would cost to have minor alteration done, he quoted me a price and then looked at me and said, You can't afford it. What a comment! I know I look young but I'm an attorney and can afford it. I wasn't sure why he thought that that was for him to determine. Then the woman came to mark the hem line and told me she couldn't do it because she doesn't like working with that material. It was a regular nice dress to wear to a wedding - the material wasn't unusual at all. I thought she was a tailor! She continued to yell and make rude remarks until I decided it wasn't worth it and left. I think she was still mad that I hadn't agreed to leave and come back on Monday. It was more expensive than other tailors, but I would have been happy to pay to have a good tailor. Unfortunately, this wasn't it. What a waste of time. - Jacket Alteration - this place was recommended by the Macy's men's department (they won't alter clothes not purchased from them). to confirm their recommendation, i checked with them another day and another sales guy told confirmed this place. i had older jacket in which the sleeves were a bit long, and i finally decided to get them altered, instead of looking like a dude with short arms. the place looked nice (they do drycleaning too) and the owners are very nice. they treated me like they were very happy to have my business. shouldn't that always be the case? location: end of mall next to macy's, so it's an easy find appearance: clean and organized, except the drycleaning to be picked up service: great (very unusual these days, right?). measuring was done very well too quality of work: stitching and ironing was well done. very minor issue of used, cut threads left on jacket (not really a big deal) price: i don't get a lot of alterations done, but i think $25 for jacket sleeves is standard price (she told me pants are $14no cuffs/$16cuffs) note: do they really use all that fabric? read more

I recently took my Hickey-Freeman suit here to get the sleeves shorten and the sides taken in a bit. I also had the pants hemmed. Since then, I've also taken my Canali, Burberry, and 2 Zegna suits there to get the sleeves taken in. I've had shirt cuff buttons taken in about 0.5 cm and Sportcoat buttons moved about 1 inch. Those he did for free while I waited. As far as price, it's pretty much the in same ball park as alterations that I've had done from Nordstroms (maybe slightly less). Generally they like to have a week's time to get all your alterations done. I'm happy with the results. read more

My daughter has had two (or three? I forget) prom dresses altered here and every time the work was done expertly and perfectly. The very nice couple who own the shop take great with measurements and fitting so that the clothing fits right. Even though it's a longer drive to this place than to the many tailors nearer our house, we come here because the handiwork is so excellent. I've heard excellent reviews about 'Montgomery Custom Tailor' and decided to give them a try. I brought in 2 pair of jeans and ask if they did 'original hems', meaning they cut the bottoms of the jeans off and sew them back on at your desired measured length so it didn't look altered at all. Seamless, no PUN intended. The proprietors that ran the business were of Asian decent and were very friendly as I walked in to ask about their service. I spoke with both the gentleman and lady and was promised the pants would be done in an hour....WOW! I was surprised how quickly they can turn it around and came back after a bit of shopping and having lunch to see my pants ready to be picked up. The price of $26 pair pair was reasonable, given the Levi's cost less than $35 at Macy's everyday sale. read more
