Service and food were excellent! My wife got the southern fried chicken. It was amazing. I got the ribeye. Best ribeye I've ever eaten!

QUITE a change from what used to be Montsweag Roadhouse. Interior is classy, clean, rustic, comfortable and attractive. Service was very good, even considering how busy it was and it was pleasantly quiet. Menu is imaginative and promises are fulfilled. handicap accessible, not cramped at all. Appearances are deceiving. Everything about Montsweag looks like it will be good, unfortunately it isn't. The poutine was basically tater tots from at bag dumped in a bowl with cheese whiz. The quinoa entree was a bag of baby carrots (some farm to table) and under cooked Brussels sprouts and a bunch of tasteless quinoa (despite the promise of a maple, balsamic dressing) at $17. The nachos, ugh, tri colored nacho chips from a bag...of your only option is Montsweag, go to Hannafords and buy everything in a bag and go home to eat it - cheaper and better! read more

Have passed this place many times but never stopped -- looks a little like, well, a roadhouse, which we weren't sure was the best option with a passel of kids in tow. Based on the reviews, we checked it out, and it was excellent. Bar had some good action for an early afternoon, but we sat out in the back dining room, which was about as wholesome as it gets (old barn decor). Service was fine. Food surpassed expectations -- our family of five got a pretty broad selection of stuff, from the fish tacos to a Philly cheesesteak to pizza. Every meal here has been awesome. From the crab Rangoon pizza to the salmon topped with shiitake mushrooms, everything I've ordered here is excellent. I am writing the following review as a traveler, not as a local, so you'll want to take that into account. My star rating on this one is based on what is available in the area, not necessarily what is available in the whole wide world. That said, we came to the Montsweag Roadhouse specifically to perform at their open mic (Tuesday Evenings), but we got a bite to eat beforehand. We had a big lunch earlier, so we went on the lighter side. My husband ordered the Poke Tacos (it was also Taco Tuesday) and I got the Brie and Lobster Pizza. Now, I've had lobster on pizza before and it was not good (looking at you Sarah's in Wiscasset), but I had high hopes. The hubs loved the tacos and my pizza was very tasty, just the right balance of crust, brie, and sauce to not overwhelm the buttery lobster. I washed it down with a Downeast Cider, which I highly recommend. Great apple flavor, but not too sweet. The caliber of open mic performers was pretty good and the bar was packed for it, so it's probably a pretty good bet for a Tuesday night in Mid-Coast Maine. Update: Under new ownership. Still has great food, service, and music! read more

You can't tell from the road, but the restaurant has a lovely back patio. This is where we 3 sat for dinner on a lovely night, as a Covid-era precaution. And what a lovely meal! We had pasta with pancettta, quinoa w/ veggies, lobster stew, Caesar salad--all beautifully prepared and served. Our favorites were the quinoa and the stew. In a converted farmhouse right on Route One, this restaurant is a combination of roadside bar and fresh, local dining establishment. I've been several times this summer, and enjoyed it each time. For food, I love the raw local oysters, the fried Maine shrimp - coated in cornmeal - the clam chowder (made chock full of clams and potatoes), and the strip steak. Go with sweet potato fries - yum! They also had an acoustic band on Friday night, so we ate in the bar area and enjoyed it. Overall, a down home bar feel with really good food. read more

This place blew us away. Passed the roadhouse a few times, as we were staying right up the road and didn't think much of it. Then I checked Yelp and saw that it got some pretty good reviews. Great revamp of this roadside spot. It's warmer, more inviting, with better food and service than under previous ownership. We were warmly welcomed and competently served. After passing by this place numerous times and having my husband eye it with concern, I decided that it was time to figure out for ourselves what kind of place it really was. I didn't tell my husband for fear of him backing out of what looks like a run down restaurant. When we entered we realized that we should never judge a book by its cover. The inside was updated and furnished tastefully. There was live music in the corner of the bar area and a lounge area far enough away that the music was easy to talk over. We were seated promptly and given menus and asked for a drink order. I had checked out the menu in advance so I knew what appetizer I was going to get for us. REDNECK POUTINE. It's as redneck as it sounds. Tater tots covered in gravy and shredded cheese and bacon bits. We both remarked that we couldn't remember the last tater tot we had and were both blown away by the taste of such a simple dish. We will have it again! But be warned, there is lots of it so make sure to come with an appetite or more than two people. Our main meal was a grilled pizza. The sauce could have used a bit more flavor. The crust was crispy to our liking and the toppings were pretty tasty. We will defiantly come back....and maybe we may see the local ghost that supposedly haunts this joint. read more

We came after a long day on the road. There was a gentleman singing on a small stage. He was very good. We ordered the special which was a flatbread pizza with fresh shrimp and pesto sauce. It was delicious. My husband ordered the clam chowder. He was really pleased with it. The waiter was very nice and took the time to recommend places to go see while we were there. I came here for dinner & beer on a friday night. A band was setting up their equipment & left the door open (cold wind anyone?) the entire time. We sat at a table upstairs, & there wasn't a waiter apparently, so we (eventually) ordered from the bartender. when our burgers were brought to us, (delicious by the way) nobody brought us any condiments. I asked for some ketchup, and she brought some. Oh, good. it comes in a small jar. I'll just use my knife-*oops*! no silverware either. And we evidently were undeserving of napkins as well. f'it the burger was good, even if I had to get up & wait at the bar every time I wanted a beer. At one point while waiting at the bar, a guy says to me, ''5 bucks if u wanna stay for the band, unless you got dinner.'' I explained to him we did. ''appetizers don't count,'' he explained. ''Burgers aren't appetizers.'' This guy came to our table 3 times trying to coierce us into paying. Sorry pal, get 'em at the door. If I got here before you started charging, too bad. It's bad taste to walk around asking people for money in the middle of their meal. I may again, but definitely I'd sit downstairs. read more

My family and I took a long weekend trip to Maine this weekend so I was not familiar with the area. I was looking for a place for dinner and I found this restaurant on Yelp - and so glad I did. Everything we ordered was delicious. My wife had the Ruben flatbread, my daughter had the mussels and I had prime rib sandwich. Our server Jesse was very knowledgeable and helpful with all of my questions. I highly recommend this place and will definitely go back if we are back in the area. read more

This is only my second meal at Montsweag Farm Restaurant and my first Sunday night dinner. After driving for .over 4 hours and with one hour to go, we decided to stop for dinner before heading on to Tenants Harbor. These are the best fish tacos ever. I have tried the grilled haddock before and was smitten - but recently tried the blackened tuna tacos. Amazing. The price is unbeatable and they are the best. We ate here for the first time tonight and our meal was good in some areas and Not so good in others. The kids meals were very good and we had no problem there. The kids Mac and cheese was particularly good. My husband and I shared a sandwich and overall it was fine (prime rib sandwich) but I do think that was partly because I added fresh blue cheese to the sandwich. The promised horseradish was very minimal and I think that would have really made the sandwich better. We added the appetizer (Brie with pepper jelly) before our food came out and it came after our meals and was not warm. The Brie was just ok and there was just a scraping of pepper jelly on the cool Brie. They also only give you 3 small slices of baguette with the Brie. We asked for extra bread and jam and that did make it a much better appetizer, but that brought the appetizer cost to $14 instead of $11. The big part of this experience that really got to me though was our waitress seemed to dislike us immediately. I do realize we have kids but she seemed to be angry with us the entire time and it made for an uncomfortable dinner. The atmosphere of the restaurant is beautiful, but cutting corners on menu items to save a buck really made this place a miss for us. read more

You can't go wrong. This place has it all - great food for the whole family, reasonable prices, quality bar for regulars, semi-formal restaurant, game room upstairs, local entertainment, great for locals and visitors alike. Never had a bad meal on the menu. And the beer is good, too. This place has been in transition over the past few years, but we hope it doesn't change for a while - a keeper. You have to remember that 6-9 months out of the year this area is desolate. That's why it's so good to have this multipurpose place open all year. You want fancy - the chef's specials are usually very well done (and would cost you $30 in Boston). You want pub-grub, they got it - try their thin crust pizzas - again, if this were in Boston the price would be double and a line out the door. Live music if you want, quiet dining room if you want. Waitstaff do not look old enough to be experienced but they get the job done. read more

So glad we listened to the reviews! An excellent, very reasonably priced lunch. It can be difficult to find good quality food when you're a long way from home (traveled from CT) but the Roadhouse totally delivered. Pizza boulders (little balls of fried dough goodness) for an app, hubby had the crab Rangoon pizza (one of the specials) and I had the steak sandwich with sweet potato fries, and we split the lava cake for dessert. All told $43, including two sodas with refills. I am stuffed and ready for a nap! I'm actually sad we're about 4 hours from home, because if we lived in the area we'd totally make this a regular stop! Cool place, wonderful service, couldn't ask for better lunch while traveling. We made reservations and they worked out perfectly. Delicious food! We got a cheeseburger and scallop pasta. Everything was hot, fresh, and tasted amazing. The prices were a bit high, but the portions were able to make up for that. I was surprised with how fresh everything tasted. Despite a 5 star, there were only two things I felt could be improved. My burger was quite greasy, but yummy so that's okay. And the atmosphere was quite loud. I wish there was an area for smaller parties just because I enjoy chatting over dinner. Overall a fantastic experience and the service was excellent. Very glad this place was renovated. read more

Great pub setting with extensive menu. I've been avoiding this place for 2 years and finally decided to stop in and I'm glad I did. After talking to my older sister about the place she reminded me that we used to go there as kids in the 60's- yes, the 60's. I had bacon wrapped meatloaf in the bar area with sauteed vegetables. All was perfect, except I like gravy to be a little more fluid. I was shocked by the sauteed veggies. They were amazing with a light garlic flavor, crisp and colorful, yet cooked. There is something for everyone from pub fare to lighter healthier selections like seared tuna on mixed greens and even haddock tacos. Prices were a value from $8 to $18 bucks. They have Sebago on tap- tres cool. Fresh Damariscotta oysters on 1/2 shell. The scene was Maine forest & shore hipsters coming in late for drinks and some cards in the bar area. I was weirded out by that fact that the Red Sox were on the TV, but with limited interest. Is Woolwich, Maine a Yankees stronghold? read more
