The beginning of my love affair with Moon Doggie Coffee began about 7 years ago. On Christmas 2005 my wife and I received a Bodum French Press with French Roast and Sumatra Coffees. This was a gift from the father in law who is a big time coffee aficionado and who appreciates the finer coffees. Me, I grew up on Bustelo or whatever Spanish coffee was on sale. At first I did not understand the hype, but after a couple of years I began to appreciate and savor good coffee. It was very much an acquired taste that took some time. There is a process here. Flavors. Roast. Brewing. Bottom line, it is a wonderful process were the palate will enjoy the adventure. Now I am a fan of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON DOGGIE FRENCH ROAST and SUMATRA MANDHELING - GAYO MOUNTAIN. Say what........ DARK SIDE OF THE MOON DOGGIE FRENCH ROAST It is a very rich and bittersweet bean with caramel undertones. The Roast is very dark and organic. This is a very nice coffee that is a perfect finish to a meal. It will compliment your dessert or stand on its own. A very tasty coffee and sweet finish. SUMATRA MANDHELING - GAYO MOUNTAIN The Sumatra is a earthy and heavy body bean with low acidity. It has complex flavors and I feel it goes well with many after dinner drinks. My favorite is a Sambuca Romano. Roast is dark. This is one for the big boys. The website is very user friendly for ordering your favorite bean. When you compare the price of Moon Doggie Coffee to a Starbucks bought coffee the price point is very reasonable. We are talking around $17 lb. Not cheap, but it is well worth the price tag. This place is pretty adorable and cute. They have soy milk and vegan cookies for sale (from Alternative Baking Company). The male barista was really friendly and nice behind the counter. We all had cafe lattes (mine with soy). it actually tasted stronger than what I'd get at Starbuck's (of course that comparison was coming). I'd definitely go back here because I really love these smaller coffee shops and I'm so glad to find a place that serves vegan cookies when my coffee. read more

This little coffee shop in Maywood's business district is pretty unique I must say. In addition to fresh brewed coffee they sell whole bean, tea blends, books, vintage signs, pastries, mugs, syrups, and other random nick nacks. Coffee refills are a dollar fifty. They even had a veggie swap here but it wasn't well promoted so I ended up swapping my basil for some peppers which wasn't a bad trade. Look out for their special coffee blends, I tried a maple bacon one but really wasn't to crazy about it. Kind of a weird taste. There is a Brazilian blend which they have all the time which is good and is pretty much my stand by coffee. There is a whole host of local regulars and if you go there often you will get to know them. A lot of older folks go there and engage in stimulating conversation. I love meeting new people so I don't mind them. The girl who works at the counter whose name is Krissy is such a wonderful and kind person! She is very helpful and awesome! I think the place kind looks like a diner with dog stuff everywhere. Coffee shops usually are earth tone but I guess to each their own. I personally think the place needs a paint job but it's only a superficial issue. Coffee is still good so it doesn't matter. Oh and WiFi is available for your phone and laptop. Looking for a decent cup of coffee in an eclectic chic environment? Try Starbucks. If, on the other hand you're looking for something hand crafted, full bodied and delicious, try Moon Doggie. Granted, it's not the most ornate or even comfortable place but that's not why you go. You go because you want an excellent cup of coffee and maybe to pick up some beans that have been lovingly hand roasted. In these days of half caf vanilla caramel mochacchino with a turbo shot and a side car, Moon Doggie is a refreshing and I might add, delicious diversion. Something about this place just grossed me out. The place felt dirty and dingy. Lots of boxes and sacks laying around. Muffins and cookies laying out uncovered on the counter. They seem to be very dog friendly and it felt like it..... Bought coffee for my family, everyone felt the coffee was mediocre. I am a coffee snob so I would go by their opinion. I couldn't really enjoy my coffee and only drank less than half because the looks of this place was so off putting. Now I always give the small guys a chance, taking any opportunity to steer away from corporate franchises. I am sitting in my car after giving this place not a second, but a THIRD try... I am usually a one and done person for poor shops. The shop is consistantly unkept (coffee prep area has stains and is generally messy), the place has stuff hanging everywhere and there was a mop bucket in the walkway... with garbage out. (I understand closing time, but lock the dors first...) The coffee is sub par and is tastless. An Iced Coffee took 5 mins and the kid basically handled the $10 debit card minimum in a very lazy unhelpful way... Leaving me to ask how much thibgs cost to make the minimum. This place is messy and cluttered, not the nice cluttered but 'messy college student cluttered'... You can feel that the place needs attention right away. The lighting is terrible, no reason this place shouldn't have people relaxing and hanging out... Just go somewere else, shame on the owner. Seriously, worst Yelp score for me to date. read more

We walked in and the place is a mess It looked like a storage closet. First we ordered a frozen chocolate which took forever to make (we were the only ones here as well) Then we ordered an espresso drink (which was most menu) and then they told us the espresso machine was broken. If we had known this prior to ordering the first drink we would left with nothing. After 3 other attempted drink orders we had finally forced to order a fake mango smoothie which tasted nothing like mango. They would not let us pay with debit card unless if was over $10 because the owner was complaining they she would receive a $2 charge, forcing us to buy the 2nd drink. The did however have prewrapped gluten free cookies that were pretty good. read more

Really really disappointed with Moon Doggie Coffee Roasters. I took a special trip here as I was hoping for real artisan roasted coffee. I usually buy my beans in NYC from Gorilla or Stumptown or Cafe Grumpy or Gregory's. My first tip that something was off with Moondoggie was when the barrista offered me a shot and pulled a horribly over done acidic cup of pain and regret. I should've just slowly backed away from the counter keeping my hands in plain site. But no, I gave him the benefit of the doubt....grrrrr The beans were way over roasted, oily and damn near black. I tried 4 different coarseness settings on my burr grinder and various different amounts of time to pull the shot. Barely got any crema and each cup was just bad....like starbucks bad. I called them asking for a refund but got no response. I then said, hey maybe I am the one who is making the mistake and asked if they could give any tips on how to pull a good shot from their beans....again nothing. read more

I stopped by last recently because I'm sometimes in Maywood for work. I was immediately struck by how cluttered the space is. And the decor is very 1980's. It's just a very "dated" place from the outside sign and inside vibe. I noticed a picture here posted on yelp of the dirty floor and a response by the management saying they're a coffee roaster and that the dirt is coffee. Yes, but some of the coffee looked like it hadn't been swept up for a few weeks. And the shelving in the picture is also dirty. I found this to be the case in person too. Just do a deep cleaning and get rid of some of the clutter. Spring is around the corner, so it's time, people. On to the coffee. Pretty good. Not the best by any means, but pretty good. I spend most of my time in New York City and Joe's, Ninth Street, Abraco etc have a better latte on any bad day. Staff was nice and that's a plus. If this really is the best coffee in Bergen country then the standards are very low.I went here sunday 5/22/2011 around 2pm we were driving in the town and wanted coffee so we went here and i was annoyed a place that calls themselves a coffee shop would have premade coffee in a thermos that you have to serve yourself i expect that from a deli not from a place calling themselves the best coffee shop in a country.We tasted the luke warm tanzanian peaberry which tasted like it sat too long.I consider myself a bit of a coffee snob and i def had better from elsewhere then the stuff from here read more

I've have good experiences here in the past. Good cup of coffee and have brought some fresh ground bean home that was very good. A little disappointed with my recent visit. I didn't realize it until I drove off, but the cup of coffee I bought was not hot at all. I only put a drop of milk in so it wasn't a light cup of joe. Partially my fault for not noticing but I guess I wasn't expecting it either. I love coffee, period. I may not be a true "coffee snob" but I can tell you what I like and what I do not like. I like a rich cup of coffee that is full flavored. What do not like is a cup of coffee that has a bitter aftertaste or, when flavored, only tastes sugary. This is NOT what you will find a Moon Doggie!!! I have been to the business a few times but mostly I order beans from them and brew at home. Flavored coffee tastes like COFFEE! The flavoring fills your home with aroma but does not overwhelm your tastebuds. When I run out of beans from Moon Doggie I am hard pressed to find anything I feel is worth brewing at home. I end up simply going to WAWA until my next order arrives. (I cannot stand the bitter aftertaste of Dunkin'.) This is a small "mom and pop" business. A dying breed in America. And that, in and of itself, is sad. This business also support local animal rescues, particularly basset hounds. A worth cause in my humble opinion. This is a weird little spot. It has a lot of personality. I ordered a drip coffee and hung out for a little while. The place was bustling with miscellaneous activity, but very few customers. The coffee wasn't great. Definitely a neighborhood kinda place. If you just want a place to hang out for half an hour, there's not much else in the area, so it's not a terrible choice. read more

I like the coffee, but this place is just a little depressing. They don't see the same volume as a larger coffee shop, so if you come later in the day you may be drinking old lukewarm coffee; I would much rather come here any time than go to Dunkin. It doesn't really have that coffee shop feel, it feels more like a convenience store. But the coffee is good. They usually have 3-4 regular varieties to choose, one being a unique flavor like smore's or something. You're also paying the same price you would at a Dunkin or Krauzer's. Not sure what other coffee everyone has had that is raving about this stuff but it's by far NOT the best coffee in Bergen County. It's regular coffee that I can get at Wawa with possibly a few more flavors. It's acceptable and I do like giving my money to local businesses or else I'd be living at Starbucks more than I do. Definitely doesn't compare to Cool Beans in Oradell and unfortunately Cool Beans is too far away to just go run and grab a cup. Someone else mentioned it but the store itself is so cluttered that it's overwhelming. I've tried to sit at one of the tables to study and do work but there's too much going on. The retro 50s look doesn't work for it and the storage area is throwing up into the store. Food selection is insanely small. Moon Doggie is what coffee houses should be - they roast their own, they sell their own, they ship their own. It's worth the trip to stock up on your favorite beans if you're local, and it's worth the shipping cost if you're a bean junkie. My only complaint is the decor - kitsch is all well and good, but it seems a bit too... much. It feels like a mix of honest 50s retro and TGI Friday's, and I'm all about basset hounds, but the combination of the three seems too much. One thing's gotta go - I'm looking at you, TGI Friday's. Honestly, though, since I'm not local and I don't spend time hanging out and drinking coffee, the decor isn't so bad. The menu of coffee and coffee drinks is plentiful and the people are passionate about what they sell and do. Moon Doggie and an Aeropress or French press is pure work coffee heaven - never drink the free crap or pay for Starbucks again! I recently started getting coffee here in the mornings, instead of going to Starbucks. I'm all for supporting local businesses and for the selections and prices Moon Doggie offers, I will continue doing so. Moon Doggie offers 5 or so different brews and flavors of their coffee a day, including one of my favorites, Decaf Cinnamon Bun coffee. What can we say...it's not the best coffee we ever had but it's a local business and its better than Starbucks. They have some hard to get coffee's like 100% Kona that they will have only a couple of times a year. We buy from them in bulk. Dark side of the Moon is a great blend. If you like flavors, I would recommend the Toasty Coconut although Katie doesn't like it. Some of the staff is knowledgeable, but like I said, we usually get a drip or bulk...nothing fancy. Cluttered is an understatement. This place needs a cleaning crew and someone to build a storage room. They don't have a big selection of snacks, but they do offer Vegan cookies. read more

I'm a really big fan of Moon Doggie I love the flavored coffees and the shakes that they make in the summer as well. The favorite flavors in our home are chocolate cherry and cinnamon sticky buns. One of the things that I love the most about Moon Doggie is how much they give back to organizations. A lot of the coffees that they sell, the proceeds from certain blends go to animal charities, such as bassett hound or greyhound rescue. I often give their coffee as a gift to friends. It's a double bonus for a great product and good karma. They also have done and lot of work with supporting the troops and sending coffee over to them. Not too many business would take the time to do all the additional work and this effort should be acknowledged. I will always be a proud supporter of Moon Doggie because of this! It's unfortunate that Yelp apparently has a lot of negative people on here. One of the things I like most about Moon Doggie is the decor. Hi friends, I really want to like this place and the coffee is definitely well, not bad but it's dirty. Look at the floor. Look at the walls. God only knows what's going on in the back by the bathroom and roaster. The employees, when not serving customers hang out and play games on their phones. The matriarch sits around knitting. I'd be completely ok with that if the counters and floors weren't filthy. I'll continue to go here because it's honestly some of the best coffee in the immediate area (but that's really not saying that much). Hey Moon Doggie, clean your shit. Thanks. I had come to MoonDoggie a few times over the years and never had much to say about it. On a whim I stopped in today and much to my surprise they are under new ownership and now called Stray Cat Brew. The interior of the place has gotten a much needed make over and is bright, airy and open. I was able to buy my one cup of coffee with my credit card (no minimum purchase) which is a big plus. This is a great little place to have on a small town main street. Will definitely be stopping in more frequently now! read more

Sorry coffee enthusiasts. You'd probably fare better at Starbucks. I've become a bit of a coffee fanatic in recent years, and after moving to northern Bergen county, it's been very difficult to find a quality local coffee roaster. I typically buy from Blue Bottle in NYC or Red House in Union city, but was desperate and needed to find something locally. Decided to stop by here because of the selection described on the website. While the single origin varieties and their descriptions seemed promising, what I actually found was quite disappointing. The roasted beans did not have roast dates, nor did the person at the counter have much knowledge about how fresh they were. Some of the beans were roasted to scorched black. Especially tragic was the sight of Tanzanian peaberries - roasted to a burnt crisp with oils seeping out. Since I was there anyway, I decided to buy the lightest roast to my eyes - a Colombian supremo. Website describes it as "Big aroma, nice acidity, good body, sweet fresh finish". In my cup, the coffee was over-roasted and very bitter. Maybe it's because the beans were stale. I don't know. Either way, I would never buy from here again. read more

After living in Minneapolis for a number of years, I feel like I've become a bit of a coffee snob. When I moved back home to Jersey and discovered that Moon Doggie was close to home I was excited to have a local coffee shop to bum around in that wasn't Starbucks. Unfortunately I was greatly displeased with Moon Doggie. They barista I spoke with seemed to have very minimal knowledge of coffee brewing techniques; I asked if they served cold-brewed coffee and the barista had no idea what I was talking about. The mocha I received that day was pretty bland. During a prior visit I was also unhappy to find their smoothies were made with syrup and not real fruit. I couldn't find anything worth going back again for... I really do hope they improve. read more

Before I start, full disclosure here. The wife and I have known the proprietors for several years through our mutual interest in Basset Hound rescue organizations. They're good, good people who donate part of their profits to animal rescue. Now, that out of the way... Whenever the wife and I are back in Paramus we always make time for a trip to Maywood to visit Moon Doggie. A great little coffee shop selling rich, gutsy, full-blooded coffee. Like General Grant I like my coffee "hot as the devil, sweet as an angel, and strong enough to float an iron wedge!" and these folks have it! My personal favorite is the "Dark Side of the Moon-Doggie" but honestly there's nothing I've purchased there I didn't like. I even bought some decaf there by mistake (normally I don't touch decaf, what's the point of it?) and even THAT was good! The staff are alway friendly and attentive and eager to please. The only downside, and the reason I gave it four stars and not five is it's kind of tight in there. Not a place for you to camp out all day with your lap-top. I usually spend over $100 buying coffee hoping it will last for awhile, at least for several months. Fat chance! I usually drink it up in a matter of weeks! Then it's back to, well I won't say who, until the next trip North. A good place with good people worthy of your patronage. And be advised, if "Mom and Pop" businesses like this go out of existance no power on earth can ever bring them back! Then all we've got are the chains, and who wants that? read more

If you are a coffee snob, their Espresso is second to none. I love their Sumatra as well. They micro roast in a small batch roaster right in the shop, so the place smells the way you envision a coffee place should smell. I fresh burr grind and brew at home and get compliments all the time from other hard core coffee drinkers, many of which now only buy their whole beans from them. If you visit the shop you will know what I mean. They are obviously not visionaries when it comes to operating a trendy coffee shop or marketing their products. It is a very mom an pop operation (good people just trying to put out the best product they can), the shop is a bit cluttered and could use a good scrubbing but let that not lessen the fact that their coffee roasting skills and the quality of the beans they are AWESOME. I would challenge the coffee they sell to any coffee anywhere. I travel the world and sample coffee at places that are much more money and rarely do any live up to the quality of Moon Doggie Coffee Roasters. It is without a doubt worth giving them a try (I do mail order, just easier and they run specials) and see if you do not agree. read more

Not really a coffee shop as one might think. They do serve coffee and have a few tables. They have very few pastries. What makes this place special is the amazing smell of coffee as they roast it right there in the front of the store. The bulk of their business is their online coffee sales. They have the most amazing flavored coffees. The place is also kind of cool that they support local animal shelters so in my book that ranks them a 50 out of 10, yes out of 10. I have been told that if you want a hot cup of coffee to go in the morning, the owners have a young staff that tends not to dump the coffee when its been sitting around on the burners for a while so afternoon coffee could have a bit of a burnt flavor. While you are there get a pound of coffee to go. They also sell cool eclectic items. What would make me rate this a 5 star cafe, if they added some breakfast foods and more snacks. read more

I have been to a ton of coffee shops and none of them were as dirty as this coffee shop. The coffee was not good either. If you keep up with cleaning your shop will never look like this. I live in town and will drive as far as needed to get actual coffee and a clean environment. This shop needs to close so a real coffee shop can open. The town really needs one. read more
