Wow!!! Based on a friend's recommendation, we decided to give this place a try. We were very satisfied with our meal and the neighborhood is lucky to have this place! To start, we got the pretzel nuggets fondue, the pretzels were homemade and were okay, the cheese was better. For entrees we got the chicken salad sandwich and meatloaf Wellington. Both were delicious and the fries with the sandwich were AMAZING!! For dessert we got....bacon brownie which was really good. Stellar beer list and service. Moonshine is one of my favorite hidden gems in Philly and has become one of those go-to spots when I have guests. I had the country benedict and got to try the short rib hash and both were delicious but the french toast sticks the star for me. I could sit there eating french toast sticks and drinking a beer with my friends for hours. They also had a darn good bloody mary special that comes in a mason jar chalice! I'm not from the neighborhood. I'm from the NE and I don't dare travel too far away a friend of mine asked me to go to Moonshine to raise money for her cousins Mummers group. My instinct was to decline. Instantly I thought 'where am I going to park? I don't like driving in S. Philly. I never heard of this place, it's probably not going to be worth the drive all the way down there' SO happy I was wrong! There's a lot next door, for Moonshine customers. It was super easy to get to, no tiny S. Philly streets to navigate through. And the food and drinks were incredible!!! I got the sangria and the chicken piccata ravioli. It was to die for my mouth is watering thinking about it. I haven't been that satisfied eating out in a long time. The service was wonderful, the atmosphere was great and I had a fabulous time! The late night menu has some really great options. Originally, my friends and I thought we'd get there for dinner. Then menu looks great if you haven't check it out already. However we made a pit-stop and ended up arriving around 12:10 am. We we offered the late-night menu. I got mac-and cheese, one friend got the wings and another the chicken tenders. I really enjoyed the mac-and-cheese it was a nice snack portion size. Leave just enough room in your stomach for the drinks which were priced quite nicely. I managed to order a pretty decent sized bay breeze for $5.50. The service was pretty good considering how the waitress and bar tender were the same person and we weren't really sitting at the bar. My partner and I just moved into the neighborhood and were drawn by the nightly crowds -- curiosity. It must be good! From beginning to end, everything was perfect. The atmosphere was very welcoming and familiar. We decided to sit outside, since it was a beautiful afternoon out. I quickly ordered the Red Sangria with Cherry Moonshine. The waitress warned that not everyone likes it, because it's quite imposing (very strong) -- she was right, but it was right up my alley, and I loved it. My partner had the mango margherita which was sweet and refreshing (I had to take a sip)! We ordered a crab cake as an appetizer and some of their mild buffalo wings (this is how we decide if a place is good enough for a second visit). The crab cake was delicious, and humongous and ONLY $13! Will definitely be having that again. It came out first and we dug in. Half way through, the wings came out and they too were well...perfect. they were very crispy and weren't overly drenched in sauce. By the time we were through, we were to full to handle entrées so we decided we'll just have to do that on our second visit. 5 stars across the board for everything! read more

I visited with my husband and kids for dinner on a Saturday night. We sat at a hightop near the bar, which was perfect for catching the game on TV. The staff was super friendly and made us feel right at home... even though we were visiting from the suburbs. The beer selection was small but varied and included some great choices; I was able to have one of my favorite IPAs, so that was a plus. We tried the Spanish Arancini as our appetizer, and for entrees, we had Signature Burgers, Red Wine Meatball, French Onion Soup, Grilled Caesar salad, and Falafel Sliders. Everything tasted wonderful and was cooked perfectly. For a small neighborhood bar, the menu is surprisingly sophisticated. This place has it all: great food and drinks, friendly staff, beautiful bar (ask about the renovation!), and a relaxed atmosphere. If we lived locally, it would be the place I'd head to on a regular basis. Not sure why so many people love this place. I had a very below average experience when I was here, and won't be coming back since there are better options in the area. The first thing that really turned me off to this place is the flies. The whole restaurant was entirely infested with flies and this alone is worth a two star review. I should not have to be batting flies away from my food the entire time, and they actually had electronic fly swatters to get them, but it wasn't doing much good. How about shutting the damn door! It was nice out and all, but the flies really ruined the dining experience. We were greeted in a sort of unwelcoming manner upon our arrival, and the service throughout wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special either. I had the signature burger, and as a self proclaimed burger connoisseur, it was nothing to write home about. Not my kind of place. I live in East Passyunk, which is just a handful of blocks away, but in some respects it's worlds away. My boyfriend and I were looking for a place this afternoon to have lunch and a beer. We saw Moonshine and thought we'd give it a try. Upon entering, we spotted a few cleaning rags on the table closest to the door. That gave a bad first impression. Next, we looked at the beer list and there were fewer than 10 beers on tap, and none of them were any good. The vibe was weird -- it was quiet and brightly lit (I know it was afternoon but it had no atmosphere whatsoever) and the bartender touted the buffalo wings and chicken fingers. Gross. I don't eat that stuff. So right after sitting down, we got up and walked out and ended up at 2nd St. Brewpub, which has lots of beer. If you live within a couple of blocks, I could see this place as being a good spot. But it can't really compete with the other places in South Philly. Sorry! read more

We should have ordered one french toast to share, not two. I had the omelette with the homemade sausage. The sausage was YUMMY. I gave Moonshine a 3-star rating prior to trying their food. Upon returning to try the food I had to upgrade my rating. I went for a late dinner on a warm summer evening in hopes of sitting at one of their sidewalk tables which I was able grab. I got their hummus and pita to start with - the hummus tasted homemade and I certainly hope that it was. For dinner I got the Waldorf Chicken Salad sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich was great and quite large for under $9, I left full and content. I definitely suggest stopping by Moonshine on a lazy Friday evening (or even after work one weeknight). It's a very relaxed setting and later in the evening when rush hour traffic dies down it becomes very quiet. The beer selection usually is pretty good although it could use an update more frequently. Very solid place. Lots of live music almost every day. Regular happy hour and in the biz late night happy hour. The bartender Jay was very knowledgeable and helpful. The bar top itself is an original prohibition bar top and over 100 years old. Outdoors they have several heaters and lights. Perfect for a nice evening in the city. Beer and drinks are outstanding. My wife had the chicken and ravioli dish. The sauce was excellent. The ravioli was stuffed with goat cheese. She was very happy with her dish. Per numerous Yelp reviews we ordered the buffalo chicken mac and cheese. (though they did have a special on buffalo shrimp mac and cheese that was tempting. The mac and cheese was not crispy. The buffalo chicken was sliced and placed on top of the noodles (bow tie) and cheese sauce. I admit, after reading so many reviews I was slightly disappointed. Personally, I would have preferred it to be prepared with the chicken chopped and mixed into the mac and cheese, then to have it all topped with panko and parm and put under the salamander for a few minutes to brown and crisp up. I like moonshine a lot. I was in for brunch this past weekend and had a great experience. I came back today for happy hour munchies and a couple of beers. I work near south street, so I had my choice of places to go near there, but I thought i'd go back to moonshine. The happy hour menu is great because everything was $5. I got the burger and fries. The burger was really yummy. The fries were slightly limp but tasty none the less. I had a burger, fries, and 2 beers for slightly less than $20. The service was good, the food was good, the beer was good. What more can a girl ask for. So, on my second visit, I will say that I will definitely be back. I may have found my local. What a great neighborhood pub this is fabulous food above average for a local pub. The owners really do care about the quality of everything. They have open a building next-door for extra seating. It's an historic bar that has been restored. The bartenders are very knowledgeable about local products like local gin - who knew we had local gin- believe me it's fabulous and other locally made alcohol. I haven't had any food there I didn't like. The turkey burgers are particularly yummy nice and moist I don't know how they do it but they're really wonderful. And make sure you have a side salad with balsamic vinaigrette it is very thick and just so tasty. Such a great venue for a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Pork Verde was delicious, but I especially loved the sweet potato fries and the wings. The outdoor seating was relaxing, the inside was beautiful, and the beer list was great. It offers a Center City vibe without the hustle and bustle. Nothing better than sitting outside in Pennsport with a cold craft beer and good food. Highly recommended. I wanted to like this place so bad because it was in the neighborhood! After a bad experience, I decided to give it another try. I ordered a grilled cheese on wheat bread with fries (Pretty simple). They brought the grilled cheese out on the white bread so I asked again for wheat. I then got a barely cooked grilled cheese (bread was soft, cheese wasn't melted) with soggy fries. Two of us had a late dinner here Friday night. We sat outside. The service was excellent and the wine was good. It is in a convenient location from my house. For dinner we had the short rib appetizer which was just ok. Very fried with not alot of taste. For dinner my dining companion had the cheeseburger and sweet potato fries and I had the fried chicken sandwich with cheddar cheese and regular fries. Nothing we ate was so good I would want to get it again but it is a good location so I will be back and happy that it is in my neighborhood. read more
