This actually pains me to do as Moonshine used to be my go-to favorite place, but after two annoying experiences this weekend I just find it hard to support them at this point. It takes me maybe 60 seconds to walk to Moonshine which is why it was always my favorite for a quick drink or bite to eat. The changes on the menu throughout my visits have been disappointing but the pros have definitely outweighed the cons. However, this weekend I was completely turned off. My mom and I went for a drink after the movies Friday night around 10:30 pm. Moonshine closes at 2 am and usually stops serving food around 1 am. We chose to sit outside as it was a gorgeous night. We ordered our drinks from the server and about a half hour later the server comes out to say "I'm shutting down kitchen service to the outside around (checks the time on his phone)... 11:15." Since we are regulars we thought this was a little weird but put in our order for an appetizer anyway. Once the food came out I just felt like we were being watched and waited for to leave. It was just extremely odd since there were other people inside and outside and I know that the place doesn't close until 2 am. If the server was in a rush to go we would've had no issue just going to the bar for our own drinks or food. The next day, Saturday, I went back again with friends after a fundraiser for a drink and maybe a small bite to eat. It was about 11:30 pm this day and again a gorgeous night so we wanted to sit outside. The bartender was the only person working so he explained there was no table service if we weren't sitting at the bar, totally understandable. We sat outside and my friend went in to grab our drinks. The bartender says "You know I said that you have to come in and get your own drinks, right?" "I need all 4 ID's." No problem there, he's just doing his job. Not sure why with a poor attitude but oh well. It's about 12:15 am now and we go in to ask if the kitchen is open when the bartender goes to the back to ask the cooks to come back and explain the kitchen is closed for the night. Two nights in a row the kitchen closed early. I'm not sure why I was rubbed the wrong way about this, maybe because it wasn't explained when we first got there both times but it just seemed like no one wanted to be there working. It seemed like everyone was annoyed there were customers there disturbing their peace so they weren't going out of their way for service. This has been the case a few times before this weekend as well so at this point I would rather give my money to a place and servers who actually want to be doing their job. read more

Finally decided to go back and give it a second shot for brunch. It was not busy at all so we got great service from our waitress. The food was pretty good but not great, but our area isn't known for much in terms of restaurants so I'm happy to see it in the neighborhood and hope it brings in some new businesses. read more

Awful service, below average food. They ran out of Bloody Mary mix and served tomato juice with vodka. Tasted like it sounds. Overheard the owner say that no one would know the difference if it was tomato juice or Mary mix? Really? Overall, I hate this place. It's the worst. read more

Hands down the best wings I have ever had. The meat falls off the bone and that parsley/parmasean pairing is incredible. Everything on that menu is worth getting. They also have a late night deal that is half price apps and $1 off of wine and drafts. read more

Stumbled upon this restaurant from Yelp reviews on a recent trip to Philly. Great choice. I loved that the neighborhood was decorated for St. Paddys Day. The brussel sprout appetizer is the BOMB! I shared with my friend but wish I would have ordered them for myself. The serving size was big enough for a meal! I also ate the fried chicken sandwich and it did not disappoint. Really enjoyed this place. My boyfriend and I just moved to the neighborhood and were looking for a good local bar and were pleasantly surprised. I liked the atmosphere and the mason jars. The food was very good and the sangria was awesome! I would highly recommend ordering dessert. We had some sort of salted carmel thing in a mason jar (very cool and hip with the mason jars) and it was really good. Our waiter was friendly and energetic but not at all annoying or pretentious. I thought that the prices were extremely reasonable. A lot of bars in Philly have great beer lists but very mediocre overly priced food. This was a nice change. Really a solid restaurant, creative menu, excellent, attentive service, and an all around well executed dining experience. Be prepared, this is probably THE smallest restaurant I've ever been to, so reservations are HIGHLY recommended. During our dinner two tables had infants (I doubt this is the norm) but it's noisy and casual enough so that their only impact was charming fellow diners. This is a spot where you can get a great diner for four for under $100, great service, great quality. It is a little small (and thusly tight), not a romantic spot, but for a night out with the fam? It's hard to beat Update: After raving about this spot to fellow foodies, something occurred to me, that might be helpful to owner, Richard (Sorry, Richard, didn't see your question until I'd forgotten what I ordered). Despite recommendations from many others, I chose other restaurants instead. I finally realized that having had actual moonshine, on several occasions, which proves the existence of the Devil himself, the idea of "moonshine" really killed my appetite. We had the crispy chicken sandwich with tater tots and Waldorf chicken salad sandwich with French fries. Our dinner was delicious. The tater tots are made in-house by using a melon scooper to scoop out potato balls. We enjoyed the outside seating. The service was a little slow, but we were there later in the evening when there was probably only 1 or 2 servers left on the floor. The food was good enough that I would go back. read more

My compatriot and I had a nice brunch at Moonshine recently. He had the deviled eggs Benedict which was outstanding, perfectly poached eggs over top Andouille sausage, great combination along with crispy potatos. I had the Belgian waffle with rasberry compote, it was unremarkable but fine. Skip the syrup which is corn syrup masquerading as maple. Ambience was nice, surprisingly uncrowded for a Saturday mid morning brunch. My constructive feedback would be to encourage them to consider getting different coffee (blech) and giving some of that coffee to the waitress...she was pretty unengaged. Not the end of the world, we'd eat there again. All in all, a nice option if you wake up late and don't want a long wait for brunch. Update: I'm always impressed when an owner or manager takes the time to read and respond constructively to feedback. I was really looking forward to good food and drink, but the service was so bad it took away from the whole experience. Lots of unique menu items, Veggie Grilled Cheese and Crab Mac and Cheese are both outstanding. But... The hostess estimated a 45 minute wait for a table, we sat at the bar, and 3 tables opened up within 3 minutes. My family and I went here to celebrate college graduation and were not disappointed. We arrived over 30 minutes early for our reservation, however, the staff sat us quickly after rearranging some tables. The food was delicious and the drinks were fun and tasty. They offered a very good selection of craft beers as well as cocktails. The menu was very reasonably priced. The serving sizes were smaller than your typical American restaurant, but this worked out well after sampling a few appetizers. I would highly recommend the Teriyaki Salmon rolls. I've been meaning to write a review for months. After having received gift cards for this place over a year ago I'm ashamed I did not try here sooner. It's very small but that's typical of your Philadelphia "gastro pub" feel. Their menu is surprisingly large for such a small place. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted because everything sounded delicious. Our waitress was sweet, engaging and attentive! I loved to find out their chef makes all of their items from scratch. You can tell it's all extremely fresh. Since going here I have fantasies and dreams about their mac and cheese and dry rub wings. Seriously- such a great place! We had my son and daughter in law's rehearsal dinner at Moonshine. Richard, the owner, was easy to work with and extremely helpful. The rehearsal dinner was held at their event space next door to the restaurant. It was a wonderful, private space for our event. The food was amazing. We had ahi tuna, chicken pesto, and short ribs. Everyone raved about the food. The service was also outstanding. Brian was responsible for making the event run smoothly. He responded quickly to any request. In addition, he put up the decorations and centerpieces before we got there so the space looked lovely. The price was incredibly reasonable. read more

I really like the atmosphere of thplace and the fact that it's close to my house. The food is disappointing though and therefore overpriced. The wings tasted good on the outside but once you get past that the chicken is flavorless and tough. I image there's no marinating of these wings or defrosting them before they're deep fried. Same problem with the calamari. Clearly purchased frozen and dropped in the fryer with a basic coat of flour. Add some salt garlic and cayenne pepper to the batter!!! That's a direct request to the restaurant. My girlfriend got the BYO burger and it would be better to bring your own than build your own here. Again a lack of flavor and freshness. Also, don't you dare order the "tater tots". The delectable crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside morsels that your used to will not be what you get. These are small pieces of undercooked raw potatoes with no flavor to speak of and certainly no crunchy coating. read more

New to the neighborhood moving from queens village and wanted to try a local place. My boyfriend and I eat our at local pubs and bars almost every night as we hate to cook. Well tonight's first experience in the neighborhood was awful. The waiter was very slow and not tentative (left homie 30% tip anyways)The food was very mediocre and no true options for vegans, vegetarians, or any allergy like dairy. We ordered lots from the menu (the limited vegan options) to try everything and it was very weird we were constantly watched by the manager. Like paces back and forth but can't get a refill type of pacing. After I placed my wallet on the table he stopped! The same manager who paced watching me attempt to enjoy my meal( not the best and the beer) was outside when we left. I should have just asked him where is a good place to eat in the neighborhood! Good food. Good atmosphere. Friendly staff. Only gave it 3 stars because the food portions are small and pricy. Wouldn't mind paying the price if the potions were larger because the food is really good. Beet salad and poblano hummus were really tasty but again I found myself wanting more than what I was given. My bf said the burger was really good too. Fresh brew iced tea is delish too. The smell of the bar is also a little funky. Stale odor. Cool little place within walking distance of my new house, went in for dinner tonight and was seated immediately. Small dining area but it didn't feel cramped. Split the buffalo chicken and hummus apps, both very good. Had the Waldorf chicken salad, also very good. My girlfriend had the short rib dip and she also enjoyed it. My sister just moved in across the street. We stopped in for a bite to eat tonight and the service was really friendly. The place has a great vibe! I got a burger which I ordered medium rare. Normally you can rely on places to wayyy over cook your burger (though understandable) but I got exactly what I asked for. My sister got the French onion soup and my boyfriend got the chicken piccata with ravioli. Everything was absolutely delicious!! Pumpkin moonshine was super tasty as well! I visited Moonshine on New Year's Day. I was greeted by a door man "Ed" who after checking my identification and confirming I was thirty continued to interrogate me. He asked me if I intended to drink or was I simply trying to use the bathroom. Humiliated me in front of my friends and colleges who were allowed to enter this establishment without such degrading and insulting questions. I was refused admittance until I assured him I did not have to use the bathroom and I intended to drink. I will never return to this establishment and I advise others not to as well. read more

Took my Mom for Mother's Day. They had nothing special for that day looks cute from the outside .The food had no flavor and we sat in the back room where we sat near the bathroom (backroom bar) and you can see where they prepare the food was only divided by some kind of curtin the floor in that room was a turn off food all over water... Just Bar food Big disapointment. It's just another bar. With bar food.. If It wasn't Mother's Day I would have got up and left.
