FUN! Great wine. Super nice staff. We came on Christmas Eve just before closing and we were pleasantly greeted right away. The tasting room is dog friendly. We had our English Bulldog, Olive, with us and she was given lots of love and a doggy treat! There were two other couples with their doggies too. Their Cab is amazing. We bought a bottle. Moonstone Cellars was a fantastic experience! I was part of a large bridal party and we decided to go to Moonstone Cellars to stay down town in Cambria and we are so glad we did. They accommodated us perfectly even with over 10 people. Andy was our host and he had amazing energy and knowledge. He definitely rolled with the punches with all of the strong personalities in our large group. Andy even helped us with pictures for memories. He was absolutely wonderful. A great tasting experience! What a great little gem and discovery! We were on our way to taste at a different vineyard all together when we accidentally stumbled upon Moonstone Cellars because we had to use the public restrooms along the beach. We popped in just to inquire about the tasting menu and was happily greeted by Bre. She was so nice and welcoming that we decided to stay and do a quick tasting. Bre made the entire experience so delightful that we ended up staying and tasting for close it an hour. The wines were great, the service was superb, even the customers who were regulars at Moonstone Cellars were a joy to interact with. With so many wineries in the area, I picked this one based on a half-star difference in Yelp reviews. It was ok, but I think its target audience is an older crowd. It was on the formal side and I felt out of place, though the server (owner?) was perfectly friendly. It was $10 for a tasting of 6 wines--I accidentally picked 7 but the guy said that was fine too. Tasting fee is waived with the purchase of two bottles. The chardonnay was really very tasty and I went home with two bottles (to be saved for a special occasion). I like that they have screw-off caps to avoid cork taint. On the other hand, I wasn't too impressed with the other wines I tasted. They were all ok but nothing that struck me as delicious. The last wine on the list of reds was very unique--the guy described it as a dessert wine without the sweetness, and when I tried it I could definitely see what he meant. But it was also one of the most expensive (nearly $40/bottle if I remember correctly). I can see why people like it, but I personally enjoyed the more informal tasting up the street at Fermentations more. read more

There are just a few wine tasting places in Cambria, but Moonstone may just be the best. The gal behind the counter had a very engaging personality and a quite liberal pour when it came to trying the wines. The wines include a Cab Franc which is one of my favorites and the zins were excellent as well. The Adularia (dessert wine) was sweet and tasty and would make anyone happy. I ordered the following: -2010 Chardonnay "Slabtown" -2010 Viognier -2010 Gerwurztraminer - TWICE -2009 Meriteaux Reserve -2009 Cabernet Franc The wife got an extra dose of Adularia; no extra charge. First of all 7.00 for six wines is UNHEARD of, let alone six DELICIOUS wines. The wines were diverse and delicious. Secondly, the pouring was incredibly generous...need I say more? I will... Thirdly, the customer service was one of the best I had. Nate was fun, interesting, knowledgeable and great to talk to. My best friend and I were there for almost 2 hours drinking and chatting with anyone who came in to taste. This place is a must stop if you are looking for some wine and fun. Stopped in for a quick tasting and left with a bottle of dessert wine, Adularia. The tasting fee was $5 and included 6 different wines. There were a nice variety of reds and whites for tasting, so if you're coming in a pair, I'd recommend one person go with whites and the other, reds, so you can experience the best of both. What I appreciate is the "re-visits" here and there, where you get an extra pour of a certain wine you're interested in, no extra charge. Okay, I give these guys the (somewhat) elusive 5 star rating. On a recent trip down the cost, we decided to head into Cambria and check it out. I think we needed gas, to be honest. But, we were happily surprised to find a great little tasting room in this sleepy town. The owner and other staff were really friendly, gave generous tasting portions, and lo and behold we got to taste for FREE by just going over to their computer and becoming a fan on Facebook. No problem, dudes. Plus, the wine really was quite good. The owner buys grapes from all over and crafts his wine and I was a huge fan of the viognier and zinfandel. I was sorely disappointed they had run out of their sangiovese but plan to buy it sometime soon. Anyway, if you're ever in the area definitely head over here and have some good wine!!!! read more

My Dad and I visited Moonstone Cellars for the first time in August of 2009 while camping down the road a bit. My Dad can't hear too well and isn't the quickest talker, so it was a huge relief when Todd was friendly and more than willing to repeat himself for my Dad. Todd is co-owner of the winery. He went out of his way to share with us about his wine, how he makes it and even the challenges of running a small winery. I learned more about wine making from that one day with Todd than I have at any other wineries I've visited. It was one of the highlights of the trip for my Dad and I because of Todd's welcoming and warm service. My Dad and I came back in April of 2010 on our way home from camping in Big Sur and again we had a great time tasting and talking with Todd and another gentleman helping behind the counter. My Dad loves the whites, while I enjoy the reds. Again, the people of Moonstone cellars were friendly and clearly enjoyed telling us about their wine and all the steps of making it. So far our favorites are the 2007 Gewurztraminer, Sangiovese, and the 2007 Sangeaux Riserva. read more

I was not expecting a fantastic winery experience in Cambria, and given the location of the tasting room - wedged inbetween two tacky gift shops on the main drag, I certainly wouldn't have been inclined to stop here if it hadn't been for the fact that we'd tried their gwuertz at Wild Ginger cafe the night before and been quite impressed. This is one of those lessons to would-be wine snobs like myself: don't judge a tasting room by it's location! Just because Cambria is a touristy town catering to boomers and their parents doesn't mean you won't find world-class wine here - and better yet, the owner/winemaker runs the tasting room personally. He was extremely friendly and genuinely passionate about his wine, without being overbearing. In general I think the best wine-tasting values involve free tastings, but at $5 per person this is the next best thing, particularly considering that Doug chucked the "six tastings" and gave us a sip of everything that was on the menu, and then some, then asked if we wanted more. And unlike any of the other tasting rooms we'd visited that day, wines were available by the glass and there was a sitting area, which is a really nice touch, actually. But forget all that: was the wine good? HELL YES THE WINE WAS GOOD. And well-priced. And delicious. We hemmed and hawed over what to get, and finally ended up with the massive Slabtown Chardonnay and the leathery peppery delicious Syrah. I don't expect to be down that way often, but I ain't lying when I say that I will likely actually be ordering their wines in the future. Moonstone Cellars is a winery we have visited a number of times over the last 10 years. I have always been a fan of their white wines but the reds I tasted on a recent trip were also quite good. Our server, Andy, was helpful, personable and took very good care of us. As a small production, family-run winery, they just treat their customers/visitors as if they were old friends. Todd is passionate and very easy going winemaker. If you want to taste some wine in a relaxed and non-intrusive atmosphere this is the place to stop by right off the Pacific Coast Highway. They have a very wide variety of wines and Todd has simply learned his craft from the best. I had the opportunity to visit this business a few weeks ago while traveling through Cambria. I had no knowledge of their wine prior to my arrival - I literally found them while driving through the area. Even though I didn't have an appointment, they were able to accommodate me (and my dog) right away and we had a lovely experience on the outdoor patio. Nate took great care of us, explaining the history of the wine, while another woman (didn't get her name) made sure my dog had treats and water. I really liked their wines and ended up purchasing multiple bottles. I would recommend this location for anyone seeking a relaxed wine-tasting experience. After my boyfriend and I visited Hearst Castle we went on a wine tasting venture. Our first stop was Moonstone located on the one and only main strip of a cute, new age kinda town. What struck me wasn't so much the wine (which was great, compare the two chardonnays, very fun) or the art (mandalas photoshopped from local flowers by a local aging artist) but the proprietor Todd. What a cool freakin guy, I think he drank more wine than we did during the tasting. This is a man who loves what he does and you can taste it in his wine. For five bucks a person you get to taste 8 delicious wines and have some great casual conversation with a very interesting person. Even if you aren't really into wine this is a very enjoyable experience. read more
