Just to update this. I took them SAME car to get my inspection done at a different Subaru dealer and guess what. IT PASSED INSPECTION AGAIN! They replaced my back windshield wiper and that was all! We used this establishment's service department on my daughter's used Subaru Outback. [[HIGHLIGHT]]At first, Henry McLean assured us that he would take care of us and we decided to have them replace the transmission.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This began our long history of extremely poor communication. Weeks would go by with no response.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There would be excuses that he cut his finger, a death, what number did we call (when we had called the number provided by him).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The price quoted ended up being different after the completion of the work. A couple of weeks after the transmission was installed the car began having a kick and we took it back in to the service department. They kept it for 5 weeks only to tell us they didn't see anything (even though Henry rode in the car with us and confirmed that he experienced the kick) and they believed it only needed an oil change. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I asked for phone calls to speak to Henry's supervisors and never received any phone calls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I will never take a car to this dealership again. There's something very wrong with this Subaru dealership. Went there recently with my wife to request a test drive and to order a new car. The salesman we spoke to dodged one of my questions until I asked it 3 times in a row and pointed out politely that he was obfuscating. The same salesman later told us the engines in the Subarus he had in stock and the suspension of the cars he had in stock were nothing like the Subaru we wanted to order... so it wouldn't be worth it for us to do a test drive. We were flabbergasted that he wasn't interested in letting us test drive a vehicle. He also had the gall to tell us to go test drive Subarus at a local used car lot. This is how they treat buyers with 820+ credit?!? Wow. Oh by the way, we later learned this particular salesman was wrong on both counts re: engine and suspension. Guess this dealership just doesn't want to sell any cars. The very same day we went to a different Subaru dealership, test drove a new Subaru 2 minutes after asking about it, and made an all-cash offer on the spot for the new vehicle we test drove. We closed the deal the very next day. Subaru of Richmond missed out big-time on an easy sale and it would serve them well to learn from their competition. Subaru of Richmond has lousy uninformed staff and in retrospect I'm glad they missed out on an easy close. Subaru of Richmond doesn't deserve to get any business. read more

One star is too many for them. Have taken my car 6 times due to problems with the radio/media system. They seem not to care and after 3 years have not fixed the problem. I purchased an extended warranty when I bought the car brand new and they won't fix the problem. Recently when I took it in, they did tell me that they have replaced a lot of these media systems on other cars due to defects. But they won't replace mine. Sarah claimed the cars are priced so low, that they'd be losing money to gift the mats. Nepotism... we hire twits! Tyler, I hope you run from that place. I will update what my experience is as I navigate this situation. I purchased a pre-owned Subaru Forrester for our first year VCU teen on Sept16. The vehicle has 113k miles and a very good carfax of maintenance history. The car has a 30day power train warranty. My salesperson was Mr. Carr who was extremely personable and this seemed to be exactly the right fit for a vehicle. I drove the vehicle which operated well and made the purchase after 2 test drives finding it to be a good basic car at a reasonable price. At the time of purchase the AC was working very well. We have just relocated to Richmond from New Orleans.My teen is not used to freeway driving so the car has not been driven often yet but it is meant to be a daily ride. I drove the car today and to my surprise and disappointment the A/C is completely out. It pours HOT air into the car with the A/C on. Even the vent/ac off pours hot air. Of course when shopping for a used car there is a worry I might be buying a used car with a problem but I've owned many Subaru and I'm confident in the brand. I also chose to buy at a dealership for honesty and reliability rather than a random car lot. Obviously I would not have purchased a vehicle with no air conditioning so I contacted Mr. Carr who does remember the A/C working well and also spoke with the sales manager who name I don't recall. The sales manager will be contacting me back with a date to bring the vehicle in to access the issue. Today is October 4th and I'll update this review as the experience unfolds. I think you can really learn so much about a business when there is an obstacle or problem with a product. I hope to update with a glowing outcome! First update Oct 5th (next day) I received a text from my salesperson saying that the sales manage apologizes for not calling back with a service resolution yesterday, but he was able to offer me the option of two different service appointments tomorrow. That's great news because the he had said that appointments were running about a week out but he would try to work something out. He must've fit me in. I've taken an appointment for 7:30 tomorrow morning and given the name of a particular person to ask for so I'm assuming this person has been briefed on the situation and will do their best to resolve things smoothly. October 6th I went to the dealership for my prearranged appointment and asked for Jamie as instructed. She was called down to meet with me and arrived promptly. She kindly assured me that they would perform a comprehensive assessment and she assured me that since I had just purchased a vehicle that repairs would be covered by the dealership. I appreciate it that she stated this very clearly without any double speak in case the repair was costly. I was offered an Uber home or the option to wait during the assessment. I elected to wait and in about an hour the helpful service person who was J.J. came to let me know that the repairs are completed. The problem is found to be an intermittently faulty relay. JJ let me know that not only was this replaced but testing was done on the compressor using die to make sure that there was no additional freon leaking or other problem that may surface later. I appreciate the fact that they took the opportunity to fully assess the problem to avoid future repairs and also that this was fully explain to me. My experience has been that everyone at this dealership has taken my repair as an opportunity to show professionalism and their commitment to customer service. Fortunately I was able to offer cash for the transaction, yet he was agitated and almost combative that I refused the offers of financing and extended warranties[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He exclaimed that he wasn't even supposed to work that day. On hearing this, I was considering walking out on the sale. I wanted the car not the attitude[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. The sales documentation also ignored the $500 deposit made by check which had cleared the bank three weeks prior. I thank God I brought a family member along who caught this mistake. He also insisted I receive an I. O. U. to address chipped paint which I was told would be addressed before purchasing the car. There was a tiny hiccup, but they offered a solution before it was even an issue. That's how things are supposed to be done. I guess my review has more to do with the coat of a synthetic oil change and tire rotation. I get my synthetic oil changes in Joplin, MO for literally $53. And here in richmond the same service including tire rotation was closer to $200. Not a good value at all. I do have to say that the service was quick and I was outta there fast. The stick with the next oil change mileage was written like someone was simply too lazy to do the math and wrote 54- - - on it. Like fifty four thousand and what miles? Went in for a rear wheel bearing and first time state inspection (2017 crosstrek). The price quoted was $200 more than competitors including other Subaru dealerships. I got a $50 coupon and a supposed $50 off the replacement part. They made up for the price difference in labor though. Charged 2.5 hours for a job that should take an hour. Horrendous shop fees slapped on top. While I was there I overheard staff talking about staff shortages. Why? My service rep. was away from the desk for 20 minutes, the other guy clearly picking up his slack. Got home and had oil stains all on the interior where the inspection sticker was placed. (First time with sticker there) Overpriced poorly trained service technicians. Will not return, I encourage you to drive to a different dealer or go to a local shop if you can. read more

I had a really positive experience. My parents and I went car shopping together, and they had called in earlier and talked to one the sales people. Harry Moseley was super knowledgeable and friendly; he was super personable while still. Wet professional. We were interested in Crosstreks, and he had a few ready for me to test drive. I surprised Harry by asking him if I could drive a manual, and he was super accommodating. We came in the morning around 10:30am and then a little over lunch time, I drove away in my new vehicle. I came in because my Subaru was stalling whenever I tried starting it, and at times wouldn't turn on at all. My check engine light and cruise light came on and I knew something needed to be done about it. After a week in the shop they had ordered parts and done replacements that came up to thousands of dollars. The day that I picked it up I ran an errand and when I came back to my car it would not start, then when it finally did, the service lights were back on again. After many calls I never heard back from my service advisor Donnie. I am sick of mechanics taking advantage of women who do not know everything about cars. I am a young college student and have other things to be paying for. I took it to a Subaru dealership in Northern Virginia and they were actually able to find all of the issues. Needed routine service, oil change, and tire rotation on my 2017 Outback. The car has always been serviced at the dealership where we purchased the car new and were very happy with that service. We recently moved to the area and went with the dealership. The phone system at this dealership is terrible, 5 hours after our appointment, we still did not have a call that our car was ready for pickup. The old dealership gave me text messages throughout the service visit. Here we got nothing. Finally got a call to pick up the car, got there and the first car they brought out was not mine!! My 83-year-old mother has bought four cars from Subaru of Richmond. She recently had an oil change there and they didn't fill the reservoir. She had to stop on the highway to have the engine checked. It cost $500 to fix. Then she got new tires and brakes from Subaru of Richmond. The mechanic didn't tighten the lug nuts on her tire enough. 500 miles later two of the lug nuts came loose on 95. Had she driven on, it might have killed her. The repair came to $465. When she confronted Donnie Myers with the bill for the repair to his mechanic's negligence, he stonewalled her and promised Chris Tomlin, the manager, would call her. A week later, they're still avoiding her. Don't bring your car to Subaru of Richmond if you want to stay alive. read more

We bought my daughter a gently used 2015 Subaru Forrester from a dealer in Hampton Roads. Last week, a month after the purchase, she was on the highway outside of Richmond when lights started going off and the car was driving oddly. She immediately got the address for the closest Subaru dealer and drove to Subaru of Richmond. The service center was packed on a Friday afternoon but when she explained the situation they agreed to look at the car and determine what was wrong. It was the alternator- and would be a $850 job - which was so discouraging after having just bought the car with 30,000 miles. Donnie Myers, service consultant, went above and beyond, making time he didn't have, to find that the Subaru warranty would cover this situation - and even covered a loaner vehicle!!! Mr. Myers took the time to get her in a car and on her way - and made us all recognize the great value in a Subaru purchase!!! read more

I brought my vehicle in for a free recall inspection. It was a major chore to find a time that worked given my schedule and their limited service room hours. We finally made the arrangements work and they took a look and determined my vehicle did not have the faulty airbag. A week later they called and told me I needed to bring it back in so they could capture the VIN to close out their paperwork. Their fault for not writing the damn number down. I have been receiving letters and post cards stating I need to get it looked at so apparently the dealer did not notify Subaru and the NHTSA that my car was fine. From condescending attitudes in the repair area to the "lack of care " about even returning a phone call from our salesman (David Loenhagen) AND WORST of all from the SALES "MANAGER" Rocky. After 9 unreturned phone calls the salesman finally answered my call and responded "I didn't return your calls because I don't like to give people bad news!" Why do these people stay in business? Surly they are in "sales" and realize we do have other places we can choose to do business. I surely will be...even going out of my way to NOT do business here. Brought my car in for diagnostics because of a rattling in the engine. They ran the diagnostic test first thing in the morning and advised me that the exhaust clamp was rusted and needed to be replaced. I told them that I would call them back as I wanted to consult with my husband about possibly getting an oil change and tire rotation. I called them back at around 8:30am advising to just replace the clamp. The whole day passed and no status on my car. The next morning and still no status on my car. I finally got a hold of somebody in the afternoon advising that they just finished the work. note: I called them... they didn't call me... AND I made attempts to call earlier that morning, but was routed to the receptionist a couple times before I got dropped into somebody's voicemail. Anyway, I don't understand why it took more than a day to replace the clamp, but I let that slide. What's disturbing most is that they never checked that the services they performed on my vehicle was covered under warranty (it's pre-owned certified), so that I didn't have to pay for the $100.00 diagnostic fee and the parts to replace the clamp. While the service here is adequate, I don't feel that they are really looking out for their customers at all. read more

BUYER BEWARE We bought a new Subaru Outback in October 2012 from Subaru of Richmond on 9177 W. Broad St., Richmond, VA, which is part of the "Moore Family of Dealerships". My sales representative made clear that the dealership was promising oil and filter changes for lifetime of ownership and inspection stickers for lifetime of ownership among other incentives to buy. Based on those incentives we bought the Outback. From 2012 through to 2021 I utilized the free oil and filter changes and the inspection stickers incentives as promised. However, when we went to schedule our regular oil change in February 2022, we were told the dealership is no longer honoring the purchase incentives. We then called the Service Manager, Chris Tomlin, who confirmed that the new owner Joseph Moore does not feel he has either a legal or moral obligation to continue to provide the previously promised incentives, even obligations made by the same Moore family who owns the dealership. I explained to Mr. Tomlin that we had relied upon those incentives when we negotiated the price of the car and had we known that they would not be honored then we would have negotiated a lower price. Mr. Tomlin confirmed that although Joseph Moore is a relative of the original owner of Subaru of Richmond, he no longer has to honor any prior commitments or liabilities made by his family and a dealership that has the same Moore name. He claims he has a new franchise with Subaru which he claims releases him from any prior commitments by the Moore family. The explanation provided as a reason for Subaru of Richmond (also known as Moore Subaru of Richmond) not to honor contractual obligations and written incentives to customers made by the dealership that is still in the Moore Family of Dealerships is very disconcerting and frankly in our opinion suspect. Anyone who bought a Subaru from the Moore family before the purportedly "new franchise" in September 2021 should be concerned if commitments made to them will be honored. Frankly, there are just too many other dealerships that have integrity and honor its commitments. read more

Tom Carr was a rockstar. Best car buying experience I have ever had. I've had many experiences with many dealerships and brands. Tom and the staff gave me everything the other dealerships wouldn't- honesty and an upfront offer on my current ride and upfront insight to pricing for my new vehicle. Subaru of Richmond was 1 of 5 dealerships I visited while shopping for my 2014 WRX. They were incredibly courteous and I would never go anywhere else again. Every other dealership treated me terribly and would hardly even show me the car. I went to Pence Subaru just down the road and was disgusted with the pressure and terrible customer service. In the end I drove two hours to get to this dealership and two hours home and I'd do it again every time. Tom was fantastic, the sales manager was even a pleasure which is rare, and the gentleman that helped me process my out of state registration and taxes, forms etc. was also a great help. I remember thanking him for all of his help and he said "we sell cars every day, but no one buys cars every day and its important to remember that".
