Totally Bummed. Past reviews sent me here, but I didn't get that level of service I'd read about. Was hoping to get on a maintenance schedule for my Lexus but will be looking elsewhere. Dropped off lexus for diagnosing engine code, shakes at 40-60mph, and a state inspection. Added replacing transmission fluid, coolant flush, and replace all spark plugs. Spent a good amount. The old state inspection sticker residue left behind with new sticker slapped over it, told me a lot. Cleaned it up with some gluegone. Still had the shakes at 40-60Mph. Error codes returned (i fixed using help from youtube). Started leaking coolant. They handed me a warranty that covers engine cooling systems but since they only flushed it, can't use it. Didn't offer any options, nothing. Just hung up. Guess times have changed. read more

Took my 2002 Toyota Echo to the dealership mechanic for excessive shaking and rattling of my car's engine twice. Each time they promised me they looked at the mounts and that nothing was wrong and that that particular model was known to have a shaky engine. As the shaking progressed I decided to bring my car here. They said one of the mounts did not look good and it would help if I replaced it. Without them trying to sell me on it I decided to replace all three. And just like that my car's purring like a kitten again and I couldn't be more grateful. read more

I drive a Toyota Land Cruiser and an older Mercedes. A couple of years ago I was referred to Chris Germain, the co-owner of Richmond Import Service. I am always a little skeptical of mechanical repair shops, as I admittedly am very naive when it comes to mechanical issues. Over the years I have been burnt once or twice at other establishments, so I now keep my eyes wide open. So I went in to get some service work done on my Land Cruiser, price was less than I would have imagined, nice system for late night drop off and the vehicle was serviced right and more importantly, ready when promised. I got to pay invoice over the phone via credit card and that was time saving. My biggest story I can tell people that read this review is this. About a year ago I had to drive my cousin's older relative to Dallas, Texas to a wedding. a long way but this man had never flown and was not going to start flying in his seventies. So I volunteered and I can tell you, it is a long hard trip that I will never take again. But that is a different story. On the way back home, tired and determined to drive straight through, the Mercedes started acting up, stalling, clunking, all the bad stuff. Well, it was 2 in the morning and we are in the middle of Tennessee, nothing is open, plus I have to be in RVA for a noon appointment I cannot miss. So I wing it and keep driving. I am thinking this is the big one, transmission, engine, but something large. I am thinking over $5,000 possibly. But the car burps on home and I drop off immediately to Chris Germain. I tell Chris the symptoms and from and the look on his face, I am thinking, "this ain't going to be pretty". He calls me back late that afternoon and says the car is ready. I am thinking well maybe it is not so bad possibly because he has repaired quickly. Well, it was not so bad, only $58 when he could have told me $5000 and I would have bit. This is a true story, and took me longer than I wanted to write, but this place is the best, so I want people to know about them. I'm usually never compelled to write a review for services rendered, especially auto service, but my experience with Richmond Import Service is truly outstanding. I brought in my '99 Infiniti for an ABS light that would not turn off and a broken cigarette lighter - word to the wise, they only explicitly list on their website several makes like Lexus/Toyota/Acura/Honda, but they definitely service other asian automakers like Infiniti and Nissan. Dropped my car off in the morning, and they voluntarily offered to shuttle me about a quarter mile away, in my car, so I could catch a ride with a friend to work and let them take my car back to the shop. Great. They call in the afternoon, explain that I need a new wheel speed sensor and that it'd be $300 for parts and labor. I decline since I needed to go out of town the day after. Picked up my car at the end of the day and was in and out within 60 seconds. Total bill: $0.00 - they not only diagnosed my ABS light for free, but also fixed up my cigarette lighter so I can finally charge my phone. Even though I know both tasks don't take much time, the fact that reading the ABS light requires specialized equipment means I know that any other auto shop could have easily charged me $80 for it. Honest. Fair. Professional. The way auto service should be, but sadly usually isn't. I almost wish I was a permanent Richmond resident so I'd have Richmond Import Service to default to for service. read more

Other car places, I would make my husband take the car because I was always afraid I would get taken advantage of with my very limited knowledge of cars. They have serviced our family's BMW and Mercedes vehicles for a good number of years, always with great courtesy, knowledge, timeliness, and at very reasonable prices. They say that a man's word is his bond, and I can tell you that is totally true with Chris, his colleagues, and Richmond Imports. They are upfront, honest, and the quality of their work is unmatched. In the seven years I've owned my Mercedes, I've had more than one incident in which a "problem" was reported by the MB dealer's service department (usually during an annual inspection) and in taking the car to Chris for a second opinion, either the $800-$1000 "problem" didn't exist, or if it did, it was taken care of by Chris, at far more reasonable prices for the repair. My first visit to Richmond Import Service was on August 27, 2013. They have serviced my 2009 Toyota Avalon exclusively since that date. I have probably owned at least ten cars over my lifespan. I am a very demanding auto owner. I expect who is servicing my car to be held to a very high standard - I expect total honesty and great service at reasonable prices. I can say without hesitation that Richmond Import Service meets that standard in spades. Chris Germain, the owner (who services my car) and Marty Blankenship (Manager) always take the time to explain everything in detail. There are no surprises! If I can avoid it, I do not have my car serviced by a Toyota dealer. I find dealer prices for service are usually very expensive. Prior to finding Richmond Import Service, I had this car serviced by two other Independent Toyota repair shops in Richmond, Virginia. Then I discovered neither could be trusted. The first place advised me to have work done that a dealer advised me that they routinely do not do in that the work is unnecessary. The next place tried to charge me twice for the same work - They charged me for checking my brakes when this was already included in the state inspection performed on the same visit. My experience with Richmond Import Service has been just the opposite. On one particular repair for mechanical problems due to an accident, Richmond Import Service found a way to save me quite a bit of money. My total bill was $616.94 when it could have been a lot more. In summary, I highly recommend Richmond Import Service. They treat a customer as you want to be treated - excellent work, fair prices and could not be nicer. read more

It is such a nice thing to find a good, honest mechanic! I am sure there are many of them out there but I have a hard time finding them in every town I have lived. When I do find one I stick with them always. This is one of those and it took me more than 5 years in Richmond to find this one. I drive a very old Lexus, 1998. It is the best car I have ever owned and if it lasts another 15 years I will be happy. I had a run in with my garage a while back and the drivers side mirror was damaged. I could no longer adjust it without putting my hand out the window. I finally decided to get that fixed and got a quote from the local lexus dealer $1,000. I did some research online and found Richmond Import Service so called them up. Their quote? $350-$400. I told them to order the part. Turns out the manufacturer doesn't make the part any longer - that is how old my car is. So he arranged to get one in good condition from a junk dealer. My final total was under $300 installed. I am a customer for life. Oh did I mention that I told him Lexus was going to charge me $1,000? I did. So he is an honest man. I have had several other repairs done there and they are reasonable and thorough. I highly recommend them. Of course I have mixed feelings because I don't want them to get so popular that they can't fit me in!!! read more

Exceptional customer service - fair, reasonable, finally a mechanic I can trust. I have been servicing my Toyota Prius once a month for the past few years as I do a lot of mileage a month. (5 - 6K miles a month). The team does a great job in placing the customer first. A mechanic quoted me hundreds of dollars more for a service I didn't need. Never again!! The only reason I took my car there was because that's where the previous owner took it. Terrible customer service! I had an appointment, but they take in too many cars and weren't even able to give me a quote by 4pm when I dropped it off at 8:30. Acted like it was my fault for choosing such a busy shop. No communication skills, very disrespectful. As a woman, I felt that he would have preferred me to be barefoot in a kitchen somewhere to let the men take care of the car stuff. I have never in my life been treated that way by anyone. Rude and offensive. If you are female, choose a different shop. If you are male and have a mother, chose a diff shop. read more
