First the good: the property is gorgeous. Nestled on the side of the eponymous hill in the village of Pine Hill, NY. It features several cabins and two vintage airstream trailers, a central green space with a fire pit, a communal lodge and an outdoor hot tub. It's a five minute drive to Belleayre Mountain and a five minute walk down the hill to the downtown area of Pine Hill with a few restaurants. True rustic Catskills coziness. My girlfriend and I stayed for two nights during a weekend in February when everything was buried under a foot of snow. A gentleman named Matty found us as soon as we drove in and was incredibly friendly, but that was the last of any employees we saw during the weekend. To the bad: I would not recommend cabin 8. It's a single room with bathroom and shower (no bathtub) at 175 total square feet. My girlfriend and I are not big people and don't mind a small room, but maybe just not for a weekend of skiing/snowboarding as we discovered. With so much equipment and barely any space to put it all save for one bench and a few wall hooks, it's just not ideal. The water pressure in the shower was depressing, especially after a full day on the slopes. At one point in my shower it slowed to a dismal trickle, presumably affected by the sinks/showers in the rooms next door. Cabin 8 has neighbors on nearly all sides. We shared an entrance with those in cabin 7 and could hear them clomping in and out in the evenings/mornings, and could hear them easily through the walls even though they were talking at a reasonable volume. We were bummed that the hot tub was closed all weekend as that had been one of the big draws for us in the first place - the possibility of relaxing after skiing all day. The temperature dropped to -15°F in the night so we understand why it was closed. A fire was set up on Friday night, but the fire pit was too big and the fire too small to make sitting in the chairs comfortable. We had to stand in the fire pit itself two inches from the fire to stay warm. Eventually we got tired of standing and went back to our room. The lodge is definitely nice with its pool and foosball tables. The website mentions an air hockey table, but this was not in the lodge when we visited. A sign on the lodge advertised croissants, bagels and coffee for sale on Sunday between 8 and 11, but when we stopped in at 10:30 the whole place was empty with the lights off. We never did get to see the gift shop as it was closed all weekend. So... not terrible. But at $398 for the two nights, I just don't feel like we got our money's worth. We love the Catskills and might give the place another try if we come back to do some hiking in warmer weather.

We still went anyway because we were right down the road and, upon arriving, were greeted by a very defensive and unaccommodating owner, who we found out happens to be Elizabeth. I get it, people get sick, that isn't even the issue here although it's probably a good idea to have some sort of policy set up with your employees that doesn't allow them to cancel minutes before an appointment. Or, here's a thought, why not have more than one masseuse on staff? But who knows, for all we know, this might've even been a lie because she was giving my wife and sister-in-law such a hard time from the get-go, at the beginning of the reservation process and even when my wife went to buy the gift card. She was rude, didn't even apologize and instead, completely absolved herself from any responsibility for the matter. Just said there was nothing she could do and didn't even offer any kind of complimentary discount after we traveled so far to come to her spa. I've worked in customer service for many years and you always try to work with a customer, no matter the case. The only option she begrudgingly offered up was to text another "potential" employee who could "maybe" come in, but couldn't make any guarantees nor was she happy about having to potentially stay longer to wait around for an answer. If your reason for visiting Copperhood is to "get away from it all" and to detoxify for a week, you can be rest assured that by the end of the week you'll be filled right back up with another kind of toxicity from the owner. Not a big deal, but it still cost $400 a night. There is no bar here, no lobby "scene", and honestly the service isn't great. For $400 a night we got a DVD player, when we asked at 9pm for a DVD, they said they were closed. The next night, we rented DVDs early, but the DVD player wasn't connected, and when we asked, they said they would take care of it "tomorrow". Finally, on our last and third night they fixed it. This honestly is some sort of lifestyle adjustment, fat farm or whatever resort. That's not a pejorative, it just is. You pay a lot of money, and you take nature walks, eat raw foods, and go to bed early. Again, not a bad thing per se, but quite a lot for the money. we didn't do the spa/resort package, we just rented the condo. Every time we had an issue, the proprietor would say "you are not part of the resort, you rented the condo". As if it's a distinction with a difference. Really annoying service, but they are committed to what they want to be, which would explain why there were only 4 cars in the lot during Memorial Day weekend. Beautiful place. Phoenicia is cool. Woodstock is cool. But if you book here, don't ever think you're booking at a normal hotel. It's not. It's a beautiful place with beautiful scenery, but the service is next to zero, and it's basically a rehab facility. If you're looking for a fun time in the Catskills, this ain't it. If you're looking to nature walk and eat raw food and drink vegetable juice, it's all yours for ~$500 a night. The llamas are cool too

We opted for a mountain view in the Evergreen building, which was stunning. Our room had a porch with wooden chairs that overlooked the golf course. The entrance also offered a peek of the creek on the other side of the building. Many of the guests were families with kids. The resort charges a fee, which gives you access to their plethora of activities on site including oak barrel saunas, pickle ball, e-bikes, hammocks, a wooden swing, and more. They also offer various classes and guided workshops such as tye dying, book folding, and cocktail making. They had a magic show and live music as well. S'mores kits could be purchased for $15 for two people. Our room was clean, with a modern bathroom. The shower got very, very hot. The thermostat worked well. They have a restaurant on site. The bakery served pastries, hot breakfast, and drinks in the morning. Reservations were recommended for dinner. Overall, it was perfect for a quiet weekend getaway.

Coming back to our room on Valentine's Day, we found a box of chocolates and a Rose left on our bed. What a pleasant surprise! You can tell that Jacob, his family and staff really love what they do. It's this small family feel that you will not find at any hotel chain. Downstairs there's a lounge area with board games, a foosball table and lots of places to sit, eat, read, talk and just relax. There's a separate building with a heated pool and a sauna right outside. We didn't get a chance to use this, but look forward to it the next time. You have access to the Windham Path right from the property as well. Lots of restaurants in town and our favorite breakfast place, Clutch and Throttle is a must go to.
