On a recent visit to the area I decided to hit up one of the places I had on my list for a while, Moore's Spicy Fried Chicken in Hendersonville. Moor's has been around for years and many a Hot Chicken Fan has visited this place. Moore serves up freshly made Fried, Hot, Spicy and Mild Chicken as well as Smoked Brisket and some other favourites. During my visit to Moore's iI just happened to be served by one of the owners/founders of Moore's. We had a great conversation talking about Hot Chicken, its history, and places that have come and gone. To keep things simple since it was lunch, I ordered a breast with medium spice and crinkle fries. My chicken was made from scratch and it took about 20 minutes for the whole process. When I received my chicken it was HOT, juicy, tender and fresh and with the perfect amount of crispiness. Even though In ordered my chicken mild, I was still wiping sweat off my face while I ate my meal. it was a very good Hot Chicken meal and one of the best I've had in a while. Usually I will tell my wife about how I found a new awesome hot chicken place. But today will not be one of those days. I got a XXX hot leg quarter with fries and potato salad. The skin was crispy and had flavor. On a scale of 1 to 10 the hotness would be a 4. If I took the skin off of the chicken, I wouldn't even know that it was hot chicken. The chicken itself was tough and dry. The french fries were the typical frozen crinkle cut fries. The potato salad was good. Before calling to place a to-go order, I looked up the price on Yelp and on Google ($12 for a leg quarter with two sides). The restaurant does not have a working website. While at the counter, I added a bottle of water and the guy said it was $16.11. I handed the guy my card and after charging it he handed me my card back. He asked me if I needed a receipt. I said no. Then went on my way. A few minutes later, I checked my notifications on my phone and it said my card was charged $17.11. Due to the high price, low quality of the food, and shadiness, this is a place that I would never come back to. read more

The food is so good. Hard to argue with great quality and when you meet Mr. Moore you know that he is a person who puts tremendous pride in the quality of all that he makes. I often get the chicken breast (bone in) meal and pork chop. I like mild as it still has a kick but it is not overwhelming. The sides are also very good as well as the cornbread. The pricing too is very very good....maybe too good! LOL. I do see a lot of comments about the owner. I can see what they say but I have found if you get your order in clearly and quickly (takes a few tries) and talk about Bama football then you'll be good. read more

SHHH! Here are the secrets to having a good experience with Moore's! :) 1. Understand that Mr. Moore does everything on his own: takes orders, cooks, rings people up. He's busy and gets right to the point, which can come across as gruff, especially over the phone. He's always been very pleasant to us in person when we go to pick up! (We eat here a lot since it's our favorite hot chicken spot in town!) 2. Call your order in ahead of time! Look up the menu online so you know what you want, maybe have a back-up in mind in case he's sold out of something. (This only happened to me once because I ordered half an hour before close and he was out of mac n cheese.) When he answers the phone, rattle that order off quick. Example: "Tenders mild, okra and fries. Tenders x-hot, fries and mac n cheese." Be sure to let him know up front if it's a large order. He will tell you exactly how long it'll take for your food to be ready and the ETA he gives is precise. If he says "ready in 15," bet your britches your food will be hot and packed up ready to go in 15. Keep in mind that the wait time could be long if it's peak hours. 3. If he's too busy, he won't answer the phone. Period. It can be frustrating, but I honestly think this is way better than if he took the order but couldn't fulfill it in a timely fashion. Just keep trying and he'll pick up once he can fit more orders in. A good way to avoid this is to order off-peak hours, just before/after the lunch/dinner rush. (**I believe he's only doing lunch right now due to the pandemic.**) 4. Please note that you can't eat here, it has to be to-go. He may have allowed it pre-pandemic, I'm not sure since I always pick up. Even if you could, there were only 2 small tables inside. If you're coming from too far away to take it back home, there's a public park closeby with picnic tables, playground, dog park and green spaces! 5. He accepts cash or card, but there's an extra $1 fee to use a card. Regarding the food itself, hubby and I always order tenders (crispy skin outside, juicy chicken inside!), fried okra, fries (comes sprinkled with seasoning) and the mac n cheese (very creamy and cheesy!). You can swap out the white bread for corn bread (small extra charge I think) or opt for no bread if you prefer. I might just be the only person who's eaten Nashville hot chicken at all 42 outlets in the Nashville metropolitan area. I completed the mission by finally making my way up to Hendersonville to visit Moore's! Here's the question: Where exactly does Moore's stand amongst those 42 restaurants? One thing is for sure! Moore's has established quite the reputation! First, in 2017, Moore's was selected to represent the state of Tennessee in the Flavored Nation competition celebrating iconic foods from every state. Then, in 2018, the Tennessean crowned Moore's the best hot chicken in the world! And finally, when you walk in and strike up a conversation with the culinary perfectionist David Moore himself, you'll find a man brimming with confidence over his creations. In fact, he'll eagerly claim to be better than Prince's, the very franchise that invented hot chicken! That's a lot to live up to! And I'd say they did pretty well. Let's get to it. THE RATINGS- Chicken quality = 10/10 This is some high quality chicken, hand-cut on site by David himself. Chicken exterior = 10/10 Finally, a restaurants that knows how to get the outside extra, extra crispy to my lofty standards. Chicken interior = 8/10 My chicken breast was a bit dry. But as a chef, I know that it's nearly impossible to get fried chicken to stay perfectly juicy. It's so finicky. Chicken size = 9/10 The chicken breasts aren't the biggest I've had, but they're perfectly adequate. Spices = 10/10 This is Moore's strength! Unlike many hot chicken places who hide bland taste behind the heat, Moore's actually makes a masterfully flavorful coating! The spices are easily the best in Tennessee! The recipe is a bit sweeter than other places, in a very good way, with so many little subtleties and nuances. What is in that spice? Maybe a hint of cinnamon? Whatever it is, the spices are PHENOMENAL! Bread soak factor = 5/10 One of my favorite aspects of hot chicken is the grand finale. The white bread is soaked in a fiery red sauce with bits of batter and chicken. You toss on a few pickles, fold it over, and finish your meal with one amazing, super spicy sandwich! Moore's doesn't want to be like anyone else. They're different. That's the beauty of Moore's. The chicken barely leaves a stain on the bread, and that's okay. I didn't get my finale, but the soak factor is only a minor portion of the formula. Average score = 9.00 Using our formula, a 9.00 rating is magnificent! In fact, the only hot chicken in Nashville to ever surpass 9.00 is 400 Degrees in North Nashville. So, Moore's is definitely doing something right and has vaulted themselves into our top 2 hot chicken joints! The Tennessean ranks #1 Moore's, #2 Prince's, #3 400 Degrees. We have #1 400 Degrees, #2 Moore's, #3 Prince's. Either way, all three are delicious, and Moore's is worth the drive. Bonus: Moore's is a rare restaurant that serves hot catfish and hot pork chops too! I'm looking forward to that! Other ratings- Price = 10/10 The price is incredibly reasonable for the product, and I don't even know how they do it! Pickle quality = 10/10 I'm a pickle fanatic, and these are the best pickles I've ever had at a hot chicken restaurant! Fried Okra = 9.5/10 This fried okra could only be outdone by my wife's okra and Dreamland in Tuscaloosa. French fries = 9/10 Spectacularly crisp fries, and FINALLY someone puts enough seasoning on their fries! Location = 7/10 It's not easy for Nashvillians to trudge through Music City traffic and fight their way up the heavily-traveled 65 corridor to Hendersonville. We can only hope David opens another outlet somewhere on the South Side! WARNING: You may have heard of, or even visited, Wiener's Circle in Chicago where the employees scream insults at you, or Shopsin's in New York where you'll be kicked out if you take too long to order, or Pat's King of Steaks in Philadelphia where you'll get booted from a very long line for ordering incorrectly. Thankfully, I've successfully ordered at all three of these restaurants. But Moore's is Tennessee's answer to the above restaurants. I was chastised for not phoning my order in advance. I was told I couldn't eat in the tiny dining room of 3 tables. I saw people treated gruffly if they ordered too slowly. The man has chicken to cook! So bring a thick skin, don't be offended when David chews you out for visiting his restaurant, and call in advance for heaven's sake! Came out of hibernation to put in an unequivocal endorsement for this man's spicy chicken. Really really good. The flavor is complex and the tingle of the spice around your mouth afterwards is the best; kind of like a much more enjoyable Sichuan. Definitely get some potato salad to cool off a bit. Also agree to that getting one level under what you think is reasonable is a good place to start. Wish I could come back and try more, but the chicken (we got a leg and a breast quarter), Mac and cheese, potato salad, green beans, and fried okra were all exceptional. We called about 15 min before we were getting in, and it was ready and waiting for us. We also arrived at 4:15, and the table inside was free so we sat inside and ate. I've lived in Hendersonville for 4 years and finally tried Moore's yesterday after hearing so many people talk about how good it is. BOOM!!! It was so good. The flavor of the chicken was addicting. So dang juicy and spicy (I love spicy but DANG!!! next time I'll ask for medium instead of hot lol). As I sat there sweat beading down my face and tongue hanging out I could stop. Just stuffing frys, Mac and cheese and chicken in my mouth until my plate was licked clean lol. I wish I didn't wait this long to go. Mr. Moore was pleasant on the phone and indicated the order would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant and received a friendly greeting by Mr. Moore. The order was ready and I paid. We spent a few minutes conversing and I was on my way. I had the tenders (medium spice) with fries and cole slaw. My other half had the wings (medium spice) and baked beans. In just a week, Dodge's gas station hot wings (yes, they deserve to be on the hot chicken list), Prince's, Gus in Memphis and now Moore's in beautiful Hendersonville. Had the medium-hot thigh/leg combo with bread, fries and coleslaw. Just perfect! The seasoning and heat factor fulfilled my hot chicken desires. Best coleslaw so far and fries were okay. I would say that I bring home Moore's chicken at least 4-5 times a month for myself and my 2 boys (The wife and daughter do not eat meat). Moore's chicken is operated ONLY by David Moore as there are no other employees. For being a 1 man show the guy is a friggin rockstar. I have had hot chicken from other places and have found that the skin may be good but the chicken average, or vice versa....Not Moore's Hot Chicken!!! The skin is to die for and I find myself licking the crumbs to not miss any of the spicy flavor. The Chicken itself is juicy and flavorful. A little advice..... Since he is a one man show and stays busy, know what you want to order so that you can spend as little time on the phone and he can get back to pleasing his customers with his amazing hot chicken and when you have completed placing your order let him know. Customer service: rating - 0.5/5 stars Walked in and Mr. Moore was far from what southern hospitality suppose to be. Bottom line, Mr Moore is not friendly. So if you're coming here it's definitely not to be treated nice. Just have no expectations about customer service if you are dining here. Food quality: rating 3.8/5 stars Fairly decent chicken. Flavors are good and tasty. Chicken is slightly over cooked though. If you're looking for hot chicken then this place's chicken is pretty hot! It's amazing how customer service can change a person's overall review.. I revisited Moore's last night because it was so good the last time I went there. My coworker & I ordered via phone and the attitude of the guy (I assume owner) was totally different from the first visit. I honestly wanted to cancel my order but I had bragged to my coworker so we went ahead and kept things as was. Upon our arrival, the owner still didn't have a welcoming attitude (I get it, they were closing in an hour and 45 minutes) as he told me firmly on the phone but that isn't an excuse. My coworker told me the next morning she wasn't impressed and that we should've followed our first thought to cancel... needless to say, I we wont be returning :( Had a craving for some Tennessee famous "hot chicken" so I decided to give this place a try and I can say that I'm happy I did! This isn't to say that Hattie B's or Prince's or Bolton's is the equivalent of something as nuanced and revolutionary as John Coltrane, but they're the equivalent to the fact he's what non-jazz artists think of when they think "jazz." Moore's Hot Chicken, by all means, shouldn't work. It's in a strip mall in between five other restaurants. Moore himself can be intense if you waste his time ordering. Not to mention that every single time I've gone, the only person in the kitchen is Moore himself, and rarely maybe one or two people sitting to eat. So why do I consider this the best hot chicken in the state? Well, food at it's root is about personal preference above the intricacies of public opinion. Although you might at first doubt the personal taste of one person, me hello there, I have been a local in nashville my entire 26 years of living, and have been fortunate and privileged enough to eat at the finest restaurants across the world, including in Faroes, Scotland, Paris, Bahamas, etc. I've always tried to retain a sense of exploration and interest, always willing to try and savor the unique tastes and preferences in flavor of those who love what they love to make. I myself, however, am not much of a cook. To the best I can I'd rather leave that to the professionals trying to get by. All this to say, I might have only my experiences to draw from, but those experiences are colored by a myriad of individual, real, and careful people. And the reason I enjoy Moore's is because it is honest and real. There's no attempt to draw you into a false sense of security and anticipation about your meal. It speaks for itself. He doesn't need to smile and garner your interest. The food does it for him. The hattie B's and Party Foul's of the world fill you up with drinks and sensation to justify their meals. It is an experience laden with the false satisfaction of transitioning from simple tourist to knowledgeable traveler. You go back home to Dublin, Ohio and accidentally happen to book a bowling lane next to the sad family of your uncle's widow so at some point you bring up that, "nashville is a blast, so fun and active. really took my mind off of things. we hit the pedal taverns and we got hot chicken, which was so good, oh my god you should try it. yeah it's really actually spicy, not as much as i'd have thought but I get what they mean about 'hot chicken' now." and she smiles at you politely, but both of you are just filling in the air because nothing you can say can really get to her core and help her because you never were that close to your uncle. But was that meal really fulfilling? Was the pedal tavern and time in the honky tonks worth it? Or does your hangover speak for you? Did you enjoy drinking yourself away? Was it worth it? Will that one night with a male stripper in that marriott never leave your mind? Well, I'd been in the South for three weeks, visiting relatives, then heading back to my home in Washington State, my wife and I decided we needed some spicy chicken, Nashville style. We had done this twice before when passing through this lovely area, having chosen different restaurants each time, and after a little research online, we chose Moore's for this time. We walked in green, not knowing that we had needed to call in our order. Mr. Moore looked at us and asked, " What name?" I said, "Huh? Oh, you mean I have to call in my order?!" Mr. Moore replies, "You didn't know that?! I haven't taken walk up orders in three years!" Well, we told him we from Washington and that we heard his chicken was highly recommended. We turned to walk outside and call in our order from our Ford Escape, but Mr. Moore graciously said he'd go ahead and take our order. The wife and I knew exactly what we wanted- I ordered the leg quarter with fried okra and macaroni and cheese. She ordered the shrimp with cole slaw and Mac and cheese. We both ordered the merely "hot" version, not the extra hot or XX hot or the XXX hot. In 15 minutes our food was ready. We thanked the good chef for indulging us and asked if we could sit outside to eat at the one wire table. He did allow us to that. We were not disappointed in the food. Hot was hot enough for us, and we've eaten Thai, Szechuan, Indian and Korean dishes all over the USA. I loved the crispness of chicken, and the fried okra was just right. The macaroni and cheese just might've been the best I've ever enjoyed, loaded with spicy black pepper. My wife was similarly wowed by her shrimp, cole slaw and Mac and cheese. Surprisingly, Mr. Moore came out to ask how we were doing, then stayed awhile to chat. He's really a very friendly guy, but when he's taking care of business he gets down to business. Visited Nashville from Philly the weekend of 3/5/2020 and was directed to this place from some various news articles that listed this as the best place for "Nashville Hot Chicken". Keep in mind my only frame of reference was an attempt at home to make it myself. I didn't do this place any justice. the chicken was so juicy and the skin nice and crispy. The hot had the perfect amount of spice for me, anymore would have had me writing in delightful pain, which i wasn't in the mood for that day :-). The owner is by himself and he had the food cooked and served within ten minutes. There's not a lot of frills, just good food. The mac and cheese side and fried okra were both excellent sides. A 45 minute wait for an order to go???? No thanks. Guy at the register was pissed at whoever he was talking to on the phone...looked at me like I was annoying him already. Told me a 45 minute wait, I just turned and walked out...I heard him mumble about calling in orders. Good luck with that kind of customer service. It's been 5 years and since then, there's been no improvement in the Hot Chicken scene back home in California. KFC has now made a weak attempt at emulating the Nashville Hot Chicken scene but there's still nothing like what you find here. There's been an increase in HC in the Nashville area, what was once only Princes Hot Chicken Shack has expanded into numerous eateries. While they all have their merits Moore's is still #1 in my food travels. Always crispy, always juicy and always HOT and Mr Moore is still his cantankerous self.
