I love Moo Shoes and because they're strictly non-leather, a good many of my shoes have come from here. In fact, I've been shopping here since their first store, located in a former butcher shop on 26th street. Since I have weird-shaped feet--one wider than the other, and both short and wide--I prefer trying shoes on in person to ordering them online. They do important community work, like hosting vegan bake sales--one to benefit Doctors Without Borders. I've donated my old shoes to them, because they find homes for used shoes--even my worn-out leather ones. Oh, and I nominated the photograph of Bowery, their resident Maine Coon, rescued off the Bowery (of course,) to be the first photo because that cat owns the store! It is true, he is a mean cat and I always tell people to be careful and ONLY TOUCH HIS HEAD, but the other cats are harmless and friendly. It isn't his fault he's so pretty that people think he's touchable. My one request for this place would be for them to offer full-service non-leather repair for shoes and belts. It galls me that I'm able to get a leather keeper for a belt made at any shoe repair or leathercrafter in town, and there is absolutely no way to get one for a non-leather belt unless I want to make it myself. (The Ukrainian shoe repairman in my neighborhood simply insists, "Lay-ther goot!") Since their current store is the biggest, it seems reasonable to me that they could offer this service, gaining more loyal customers in the process. Oh, and lastly, they need to offer a wider selection of widths of belts. I'm saying personally, I have quite a few buckles, all different widths, and it pains me that I could go to almost any leather store in town and have a custom belt made, but at MooShoes most of their belts are 2" wide and attached--not detachable. Overall, I'm a loyal fan and am happy they've been so successful. read more

My favorite store in NYC! The selection is so diverse that there's something for everyone both in terms of style and price point. The selection is updated on a regular basis, too. The staff are friendly and knowledgable and the cats are lazy. Except for Georgie, but that's only because she's new and hasn't been properly indoctrinated by the older cats yet. In addition to making it easy for people who give a damn about what they put on their feet to find ethical footwear, Mooshoes is THE vegan community center of NYC. Mooshoes is great. It is vegan owned and operated, which definitely means they have their values in check. Otherwise they do have really cute rescue cats that they've had for quite a long time which can have a great amount of attitude. The shoes themselves I generally feel are pretty boring though, nothing beyond what you would expect. Also, they are pretty pricey comparatively for the product they are putting out, manmade shoes generally don't cost that much. I understand the name brand shoes (Earth, Simple, VegShoes) but the off brand ones are still super high. I constantly hear from my guy friends that they have a terrible mens selection and it's extra hard for vegan guys because they can't really use the payless option or find cheap shoes at a quality shoe store that happen to be made out of manmade materials. So I do wish they would expand into some cooler ideas for their products. If they had belts that weren't made out of fake leather, but instead bicycle tires, or wallets made out of vinyl records, these sorts of things would be great and really fit in, but they have plain wallets and plain belts. We still want to look hip and cool even though we are vegan and the workers there typically look very hip, so you would think that would equal itself out. But really overall I think it's great what they are doing and they have a huge online business as well as being super popular here, but everyone could use a little bit of change. read more

I have shopped in their store since they were located in the 20s, then on Allen Street near the amazing Bluestockings bookstore and their latest location on Orchard Street (near vegan bakery, babycakes). My most recent visit at Moo Shoes was extraordinary. Neysha was super helpful. She is super knowledgeable about shoes and veganism. Even though I felt like a high maintenance shopper, I never felt rushed. Neysha was super patient with me. All the employees there were so kind and resourceful. The only thing I can criticize about Mooshoes is that they don't sell vegan kids shoes for my vegan toddler son. They're an amazing store with an awesome selection and a fantastic staff. read more

I'd known about Moo Shoes long before I stepped foot in NYC, and was glad to finally have the chance to visit, browse & purchase while in town. What a fantastic spot, so packed full of awesome vegan shoes & accessories! The range of footwear was great, so even someone picky like me (I like fairly plain styles & also wear prescription orthotics). I didn't even think to browse the bags/belts/etc I was so enamoured with the foot-based offerings, in fact. And what a dream to be able to pick anything off the shelf and know it's vegan. So glad a place like this exists. The only areas that lacked for me were the lack of assistants (though very helpful, one person was hard pressed to be dealing with the half-dozen people in the store at once), a fair few styles in limited sizes, and the small area for actually trying on shoes. I've only bought stuff online since i live in the Bay Area, but have had a good experience so far. I was nervous about buying shoes online since I wouldn't get a chance to try them on first, but everything has fit, so far. I did get a pair that made my heels bleed, but was able to wear them with socks for a while to help stretch them out, and now they fit perfectly. Not an ideal situation, but still worked out. I realize that vegan products tend to be more expensive (not entirely sure why, though); but I'm willing to help support the cause, so to speak. But it makes me cringe to spend so much! Residential kitty Marlow is the BEST. Besides that, it's really awesome that you can walk in to a store in the city and not have to obsessively read labels or get on your phone to check out if it's vegan. That said, I do wish they had more accessories (I know they're a SHOE store), but even things like more socks, or belts/bags, would make it even more enticing. I try my best to live a full vegetarian lifestyle, which not only involves vegetarian food but also involves me avoiding leather products. Not an easy task with shoes and belts the way they are in this society. This is where MooShoes comes in. They appear to deal a lot with a British company called Vegetarian Shoes, which is nice since I've been buying their things since 15 or so years ago and they have everything from sandals to dress shoes. This is perfect for a vegetarian. The service is excellent. Wonderful ladies work there! Everyone is very nice to me and eager to help. It appears everyone believes in the product and that is so important. They even have a store cat and a store dog. They're very charming and add to the ambiance. My only problem is, most of the time they do not carry the items I want, So I have to come back frequently. You can always order online, but I find its best to try on what they have at the store, especially since they go by European sizes, not American. Overall great store, I highly recommend it, but anticipate the possibility of the item you want being out of stock. read more

Until recently I only shopped at Mooshoes online. The assortment of styles is impressive and everything I've ordered has earned me lots of great compliments. My shoes come quickly and my orders have been consistently accurate. But the other day I visited the store and now I'm an even bigger fan. The resident cats greeted me, as did the friendly and helpful staff. I'm one of those indecisive people, but the girl I worked with had a sense of humor about it and didn't make me feel bad when I changed my mind a couple times. She also helped me pick out some great shoes and answered all my questions. They also have bags, wallets, belts, t-shirts...you need to check it out. I learned that they also do both animal rescue and author events and they stress the importance of fair labor, in addition to cruelty free products. It's really an awesome store for so many more reasons than just carrying cute boots! I'd love to see more businesses who are thoroughly committed to doing good for the world with great convictions, approachable employees, and a sense of style I want for my own! read more

I picked up a pair of Simple shoes here the other morning. Often times, i have very different experiences compared with what I have read on yelp which is why this is my first review. The staff didn't hold my hand while I tried them on but they brought me what was available in my size and I walked out content. The dress shoes looked decent so perhaps the next time I need a new pair I'll head here instead of Shoe Mania. The books and accessories also seemed nice. I love that there is a vegan shoe store I can visit when I am in NYC (I used to spend a lot of money at Mooshoes when I lived in the City!), and though the selection of colors and styles could be better, I love what they are doing: promoting cruelty free fashion. However, every time I've gone in there, the staff has been really standoffish and acted like they were put out when I asked them a question. Even asking if they had a particular shoe in a particular size brought a healthy dose of attitude - not really what I'm looking for in a shoe store! The last time I was there, the shop girl was talking to a friend at the counter and completely ignored me. I spend a lot of money on quality shoes, so you'd think they would want my business. As one who prefers not to wear leather, I have been buying shoes at Moo Shoes for years. I always find a pair that works for me, although most of their styles are more granola-y than my taste. Other than Moo Shoes I don't know where I can find non-leather shoes I can wear to a business meeting. A few years ago a pair wore out earlier than it should have. I brought it back, they realized it was a manufacturer's problem, and they replaced the shoes without a problem. That's the kind of service I like. read more

The people who choose merchandise for Moo Shoes are so cool and responsible that they don't just avoid animal-based goods, they actually refuse to carry anything produced by any company that uses leather or gelatin or any other animal products. Wow. The shoes and bags and whatnot are very slick and pretty. Although everything I picked up cost about $20 more than I thought it would from looking at it, it's hard to begrudge the store their markup since they are filling such a unique niche, and since most of the products are imported from artisans around the world. You know what's great? Vegan shoe stores. You know what sucks? Getting on a train for several hours specificially to visit said store and never knowing if you will be snubbed by the sales people. Sometimes they're great. Often they're indifferent. Sometimes they're downright rude. And while it can be kinda fun to make a snooty person have to wait on me, usually it's just awkward. My rating is based off of the wonderful customer service I received. I ordered a pair of boots from Mooshoes online which is always a risk but I had them before so I knew I liked them. Well, just two months in the zipper completely breaks making the boots worthless. I contacted Mooshoes to inquire about a new boot or a refund, and while they could not refund me my money or get me a new boot because I had bought them on sale and they no longer carried them, they did offer to pay the repair cost for my boot. Not only did they offer me a solution, but repayment for the repair was also quick. I will definitely be recommending this store and buying from them again. Thanks Mooshoes! read more

I just ordered $400 worth of shoes (which, incidentally, is more money than I've spent on shoes in my life), and they're now some of my favorite shoes ever! Best quality vegetarian shoes I've ever worn. I hate shoe shopping (actually, shopping in general), so before showing up at the store, I went to their website and made a list of all the shoes I liked. Then I showed up to the store with the list, and the staff was extremely helpful at fetching all the items on my list. Unfortunately, their website had listed shoes that had long been out of stock, but they had a good selection in stock. My vegetarian mocs are now my absolute favorite pair of shoes. Vegan shoes! I totally just came here to check out all the brands I keep finding online but don't really know if I want to buy. The store was a dream for me, it was like I was in a candy store. My friend couldn't believe the shoes she was checking out were vegan but hey, technology never ceases to amaze me. They also had tons of helpful vegan related items, like cookbooks and vegan's guides to nyc. But you want to hear about the shoes right? Onward! + Not shoe related but: Nice layout of the store and great lighting + Carries most sizes but sometimes shoes come in only a 6 or a 11, especially with the sneakers/casual footwear. (neutral)* Salespeople, though really nice, were kind of aloof even though it was practically empty. I saw you surfing tumblr instead of helping that lady. XD - Pricey, especially the belts - Speaking of the belts, I have narrow hips so none of the belts were small enough for me. I used to adore Moo Shoes but over the last couple of years I find their service to be getting worse and worse, the prices higher and the inventory lower. There are many other brands that are vegan and they dont seem to carry as much as I hoped and are out of sizes or styles a lot. They have nice shoes but that says more about the brands then the stores. They are missing many vegan shoes that dont necessarily advertise themselves as a vegan company. The service is AWFUL. If you dont want to help customers in the store, then dont have a store and just concentrate on your internet business. They seem to know nothing about shoes or the fitting. They cant tell you if something fits, will stretch or even ask if they can show you something until you wait around and they finally aknowlege you enough for you to ask. You can buy the bags for less money on other websites. I thought they would have more stuff at the new location but they dont. Overall I am rarely buying here anymore and find myself looking at it here and then ordering it from vegan essentials or somewhere else direct. read more

I have always had a hard time finding shoes that I like AND fit me, since I need a large size, and every time I go to this store there seem to be multiple options that accomplish both. Vegan shoes. Vegan bags. Vegans shirts. Vegans jackets. And basically anything and everything in the store is vegan. It's such a relief knowing there's a store dedicated to vegans. The staff is always really nice and friendly and very helpful and the prices are very reasonable especially for upscale shoes. And they have a rescued cat you can hang out with (they had more cats before who unfortunately passed away recently from old age) and a rescue dog who thinks your shoes are toys and you're the perfect person for hugs and kisses. I think this store might be a little too popular because I couldn't find a pair of shoes here in my size. I found a couple of options I liked but they were only available in odd sizes (quite a few in 5 and 10 only). Really cute store, I love that it's all vegan, but I didn't find too many shoes with enough arch support (vegans need arch support, too!) I'd love it if they added a few more vegan T-shirt options. I returned to MooShoes a month ago and had a MUCH better experience. I did not mention that I authored the previous review. Shortly after I posted it I was contacted by the owner who apologized and assured me things were better. Well, I can confirm that they are. The staff who helped me were very friendly, retreived the shoes quickly. So was the store kitty, Marlowe who sat in a shoe box with his name on it on the counter. The shoes I bought were cheaper than they were from the company that makes them by about $15 and they had my size in stock. So far, I've really loved my new Marais USA Beatle boots and they are comfortable and good quality. The sign on the door telling people wearing real fur where to stuff it is also amazing. Took an Uber from Jersey specifically to check out this place and the minute we walked in we were not acknowledged. Two couples walked in after us and they were, and mind you we were there for a good 10 minutes and still no acknowledgment. The only reason I'm leaving 1 star is for their poor customer service. I would hate to think that It had anything to do with the way I was dressed or my ethnic background. Rarely do I ever leave a review or a negative one for that matter. I had every intention to purchase something as they do have a cute selection of shoes and handbags but that kind of behavior really turned me off. read more

I have bought from Mooshoes.com before, which went perfectly fine. I did their online store (didn't realize they had a store in L.A) I ordered same size (6, cause that's my shoe size) as before, also going on their drop down of Women-Sneakers (so stupid me I made the assumption that all shoes on that page are women sizes, which they sneak in men sizes too) and got the wrong size because it ends up being mens 6, contacted them they said they can reship free but I have to pay for shipping return. I did that, requesting women's size 6, and I receive them , they are cute and sporty and I wear them, they feel a bit tight but I go run an errand with them and it was literally a 30 minute walk, I got blisters on my feet and my toes were tight and hurting ( no mind you that my feet are small, sometimes I can wear a 5.5 shoe size). They're the most uncomfortable sneakers I have ever worn. I email the company same day which was Thursday the 29th of August, and have gotten no response. I then look on their site for other ways to contact them and see that they have an L.A store. I called them. The lady said they don't accept returns from worn shoes, because "they recommend you don't wear them outside" so they can be returned, since they are a small store. I asked her where in your website does it say that. She doesn't say its on the website. I am never buying from this company again. Very disappointed and have sneakers that I cant wear nor anyone else I know can wear. read more

The experience at the store was great. The staff was very nice and willing to help me with picking out a pair of shoes, but the pair of shoes itself was not. I bought a pair of Men's dress shoes for $165 ($179.64 after tax). After wearing it for the first time in NYC going to and from work (about 10 minutes of walking each way), there are holes in the heel of the shoe. If you buy a pair of men's dress shoes here, make sure you don't step on any rocks and only wear it indoors. I've stepped on a few pebbles commonly found on the streets of on NYC and it's already stuck on the shoe. When I'm walking, it makes a scratching noise. After removing the pebble, there is now a hole in my shoe and now I'm afraid of stepping on anything that will be smelly if it gets stuck in the hole. This is only after wearing for one day which is 20 minutes of outdoor walking. For the price, I was expecting a better quality shoe. I contacted customer service and they recommended that I buy "adhesive heel pads." That has nothing to do with easily getting holes on the heels of the shoe. read more

The quality of the Vegetarian Shoes they carry has declined greatly over the years while the prices have increased substantially. After only a few months of buying a pair of shoes, the soles are falling apart and the uppers scratch so easily without being able to fix them with polishing. You get this low quality for shoes that cost well over $150. Might as well go to Payless for vegan shoes and at least pay less money for low quality. read more

TOO MUCH FUN! If you're looking for super stylish sexy shoes that are cruelty free, this is your place. There is one in LA, too. The only thing I'd say is that the variety online is better. I will go to the store in person for sales and to try the fit of certain brands, however, I primarily buy my shoes from them via their online store. Either way, it's a lot of fun for consumers who are really into shoes (me!), style (me!) and being cruelty-free and eco-conscious (me! Me!) at the same time. They're very on trend and it's not just shoes - there are belts and handbags and all kinds of gorgeous things. i was pretty excited to check out this store, as i have much difficulty finding animal-friendly products, even here in new york city. well, i wish i could say i'll go back, but i won't. i love the shoes i purchased, but i had to go through a month-long saga of an attempted size exchange, and some unnecessary attitude, before i got them. i still can't quite deduce why it took them a month to get my correct size, when i could have ordered them online, myself, and received them in a few days. i decided to edit out the details of the story, but suffice it to say that my girlfriend (who was merely making a pick-up) and i were met with much rudeness through this exchange, and it was disheartening. PLEASE READ THIS PART: the part i really want you to know, is that despite their "clearly" stated return policy online, THEY DON'T DO RETURNS ON IN-STORE PURCHASES. please don't make the same mistake as me, or they may very well end up with your money and you empty-handed. my suggestion would be to avoid them at all costs, even online. if you're ordering, order from somewhere else. it's all available somewhere else. it makes me really sad that a seemingly humanitarian business like this would have so little regard for people. i don't think it's what the founders of the store had in mind. read more

Imagine walking into a shop that's packed wall-to-wall with cute shoes and adorable bags, and none of them are leather. To me, it's paradise to be able to enter an actual SHOE STORE and buy normal shoes that aren't plastic garden clogs. They have boots and heels and sandals and they're all cute and well-made and supple-- nothing cheap or stiff or dorky. No cheap-ass sweatshop crap. Real shoes by real designers who just happen to be vegan. I bought 3 bags and a pair of shoes, all for about 1/3 of what an Olsen twin would spend on just one handbag. As a bonus, there are 5 store cats to keep you company. read more
