My vegan husband wanted to stop by this place on our weekend visit to NYC. I was totally not expecting to find any shoes that I liked, but wow was I wrong! I only bought one pair of wedges (seriously cannot wait for warmer weather to wear them) but they had a great selection of flats, boots, sneakers and summer sandals. They also had a great selection of handbags! My husband (the pickiest man alive) found several pairs of shoes that he liked too. House cat Georgie was the icing on the cake. So glad this place exists! I've scoured the Earth, traveling to the four corners of Mordor just to find a pair that didn't involve killing a cow. And here we have heaps of them. They've got a range of options, from dress shoes to boots to a few more casual (but still classy) pairs. Their selection for men is pretty extensive. They've also got some accessories, like belts, handbags, backpacks, and thin wallets. I picked up a Baggu shoulder bag. Faux leather belts are incredibly hard to find, so I'm glad they have them, although the one I looked at was $75. I got dress shoes that look quite elegant. Many of the dress shoes for men are tacky, with blocky toes and rims on the bottom. Also, some warp strangely when you try them on (poorly designed, I think, or perhaps the material doesn't bend well). The product is very, very expensive. Around $110 to $170 (a few pairs farther out, like $65 and $260). I'm willing to eat the cost because having responsibly-sourced shoes is more important than me, but this will be a non-starter for many. I'd love if someone manufactured non-leather shoes (they are plastic, after all) and sold them at mass market places. Vegetarianism shouldn't be the exclusive domain of the wealthy. They also have limited sizes of some pairs. You can get added to a waiting list if they don't have your size. Most of the shoes are imported from Europe, so they use European sizes. The staff can help you out. I got a size lower than was recommended (I'm a US 12 / EU 45, but EU 44 fit more snugly). Staff are rather icy at first, but I bonded with the cashier over T-Swift. They've also got a cute cat roaming around, although it sticks to itself. I wanted to pet it! Giving this extra stars because they're doing something so important. I'm so glad they exist. read more

i have to confess that although i have been a vegetarian for about 20 years, and i consider myself a little more enlightened that most (read: holier than thou) i do love shoes. fashion forward shoes. so when i go to mooshoes it is with every intent of ooo'ing and ahh'ing over things that i can't live without. i just have such a hard time liking the stuff. but in theory i love love love what they have. now, i am a big matt&nat fan and big buddha fan. but do they make shoes? i guess my alternatives are te casan/natalie portman, but her shoes don't fit my wide feet. or there's stella mccartney, where i literally drool over everything in the store, but her vegan shoes are $800. not going to happen. so i will continue to travel to mooshoes in the hope that either my taste changes or a new designer comes out with something that does not scream "plastic looking and going to fall apart in 3, 2, 1..." read more

I haven't been to the retail outlet but I have ordered from these people over their website. Last time I ordered my shoes weren't in stock and I didn't find out until a week later when I called, so I was a little apprehensive about ordering again BUT this latest transaction was awesome. great selection of vegan shoes and a few accessories (purses, belts, tshirts, etc). however - They were having an event on saturday, and I kind of felt like the staff who worked there was pretty cold and unfriendly. nobody invited us to the cake samples they had out, or drinks, nobody told us about the sales that were going on - however they mentioned it to someone who must have been local, or a regular when she walked in, so thats how i knew what was happening. i was going to buy a shirt, but walked out empty handed since there were three of us there and nobody mentioned to us about the sale or the treats to any of us in the party. we find new yorkers to typically be so friendly and chatty, but not here. however, the store is nice and has a good variety of shoes. read more

These folks are the greatest. Something like 10 years ago I made a pilgrimage, when I had a connection through NYC. Imagine you have never been to NYC before and you have just a couple of hours to kill - I chose Mooshoes over any sights, and I'm so glad I did! Fast-forward 10 years. Moo Shoes is the best store on the planet. Could it be that I've just been lucky? That I chose the only boots (the Aurora boots) that could last through an entire Minnesota winter? (And I wore those boots every single day, walking a mile through salt and ice to the train each morn and night.) That I just happened upon their new store's grand opening last year and was able to meet the owners and devour deelicious vegan treats? I have yet to find any reason why I should not do all of my shoe shopping here. My favorite shoe store in New York! The staff is extremely knowledgable and friendly, the two cats are adorable, and the selection of shoes is amazing. I am vegan, and I love shoes, so this place checks every box for me! Novacas (the house brand) makes the best dress shoes, and the prices are totally do-able for such a beautiful, durable, and ethically made product. I've had some novacas/brave gentleman boots for over 3 years and they still look new in very heavy winter wear! They also throw tons of awesome events! They have tons of pamphlets and things to read if you want to read up about veganism or other vegan dedicated business in the area. I don't know if I would buy my shoes here because I think they are horribly ugly and cheap, plastic looking, but this place is amazing for someone like my husband who won't wear leather and needs nice shoes for work. The quality is pretty decent, and when he wears through the shoes we've had a lot of luck taking them to a shoe repair place. So while the shoes are a little pricey - like more than I spend on a pair of shoes ($130-200) - they do last a long time and stay pretty decent looking. For some reason I would have tell of a problem spending that money if I were purchasing real leather. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars intead of 5 is because they seem to have stock issues. 9 times out of 10 they don't have his size and have to order them. It's not a huge deal, but we live on the UES, so it's sort of a shlep. Also, they have a few cats that hang out in there. I personally love cats and think they are cute, but these aren't the friendliest and will swat you. So beware. If I had one request it would be to carry more belts. They do have a few, but it's a slim selection. Also, for some reason they always only seem to have super small sizes. My husband is a 34 waist, and the belts only get half way around him. OH, and I forgot to mention that the sizes are not consistent. My husband usually has to try on 3 or 4 different pairs in the same size before finding on that fits. So for a store that doesn't have a huge inventory it is difficult, and you can't just order them and have them shipped (not that I even know that is an option because I've never asked) because it's unlikely the pair will fit. I know that is not Mooshoes fault, but if they know this is the case they should carry more shoes in the same size. read more

It's vegan shoes so of course it's very good. Unfortunately however the prices are high. I know, demand is not as high for non leather as leather, but still they should be able to find more reasonably priced footwear. Especially, since one can get also get great vegan shoes at Payless, and to a lesser extent Marty's. I recommend looking at those 2 places first, and if they don't have what you want go to Mooshoes. Or, if you're looking for something in particular that's hard to find check out Mooshoes. Or, if you're rich go there first. You've gotta love a place that has a great selection of vegan shoes and also has cats. What's not to like?

I bought several shoes here over the years and some belts. I am happy the place exists but it is kind of hit and miss. The belts have a very sort lifespan. But my biggest problem is that while the shoes are animal friendly, they are mostly not environmentally or labor friendly. There are very few items you can find that are made in labor respecting countries. Lots of the shoes are shipped have way around the world. read more

Oh my goodness thank you world for a cruelty free shoe store! I was able to get strong, ethically made super cool boots, and my boyfriend got dress shoes, a belt, a wallet and a sweet t shirt. The prices were just fine, comparable with other shoe stores and you are getting a quality product that lasts. I've been looking to buy a good quality vegan leather shoes for a while. Visited this store once, even though the shoes that I looked up on the website were not in stock, I was able to try them in a different color as well as other shoe brands to find the right fit and will order online when the ones I liked become available. For many years, whenever our family took a trek to NYC, Mooshoes was among the top sites to visit during our trip and we have spent hundreds of dollars there (a very easy thing to do, considering their prices), and owner Sarah (I think that is her name) was always courteous & attentive to our needs. Each year, we set aside hundreds to spend there, and were fine with it as we were happy to obtain cruelty free shoes. Then, one year we went when Sarah's sister was manning the store, and she couldn't have been more rude or less interested in helping us. The year before I'd bought a pair of sandals that I love and wanted to buy another pair. When I mentioned them to her, she acted like I was a complete idiot, and as if they had never even heard of such an item. We left that year without buying anything...Couldn't get her to help us, even though we were the only people in the store. I am really disappointed by this turn of events, and haven't purchased anything from them since. I'm giving them 3 stars because they're cruelty free (but an A-OK rating is a little much); however, as far as their customer service goes Sarah needs to fire her sister. read more

i love the idea of this store but several pairs of shoes ive bought from mooshoes have made my feet BLEED. they cary european sizes and i guess they have skinny bizarre feet that fuck me up... and most of the styles are straight from 1994 and havent changed much in years. ill go with payless or zappos online for my vegan kicks. read more

just came back from mooshoes. love the store. always have. even though they were way low on stock. thank god i finally found something i liked in my size. it was becoming hopeless. and thank god vegan shoes are finally becoming fashionable! the nicest brands they sell are beyond skin, tescan (natalie portman's shoe line), charmone (only on the website i think), olsenhaus (probably the nicest shoes they have at the moment), and novacas (only some of their stuff is nice). anyway, i don't know about prices compared to other websites, but even if they charge 10$ more (as one reviewer stated), you can actually try on the shoes which is the best thing for me. today i found that even though i'm normally a size 7, a size 6 novacas and macbeth shoes fit me. so there you go! support them! read more

What a disappointment. I live in California and made a special trek from Brooklyn to this store, during a Thanksgiving visit. I bought a cute pair of Abbey Oxfords by Marais USA, which were not cheap ($105). By December, the wooden heels were both pulling away from the shoes and the rubber bottom was pulling away from the wooden heels; total failure of a shoe. I wrote to Marais and they said I needed to go through the store since that's where I purchased them. Reasonable enough. But this store doesn't feel the need to respond to customer issues, so I'm out over one hundred bucks for a pair of shoes which lasted about a month. Stay away, there are other places with much better customer service. Zappos has a decent collection of vegan shoes and would have never left me disgruntled and with broken shoes. read more

I used to buy leather-free shoes years ago and the problem used to be quality (lots of cracking, falling apart, etc. Thanks goodness things have changed over the years! I bought the Kent Clark Vegetarian men's shoes at Moo Shoes and they are top quality. (Bought a belt, too, which is holding together well.) Good (not great) selection. They tend to be out of a lot of stuff. The t-shirt selection and men's selection needs help but there are some great vegan wallets, bags and shoes here. The service tends to suck...mildly uninterested staff who don't seem to know when/if sold-out things will be restocked. However, a great place to find vegan wares. I agree - we need arch support shoes in this store!! And some stock that is in between a flat and a ridiculously high heeled shoe. read more
