Supreme Concrete recently completed an outstanding driveway project at my home. This was much more…read moreinvolved than simply replacing my 43-year-old cracked driveway. They widened my two-car driveway by approximately 25 inches on the garden side and 38 inches on the lawn side. This required removing and relocating irrigation lines and sprinkler heads, which was no small task. On the garden side, they also constructed a curb because the remaining garden area is higher than the driveway. The original driveway was only four inches thick and had no reinforcing steel. Supreme poured the new driveway approximately five to five-and-a-half inches thick and installed a rebar grid spaced about every 18 inches. They also installed a proper sewer cleanout cover over the existing cleanout pipe. This was the second project I hired Supreme Concrete to complete. The first was replacing three concrete sidewalk panels. They did such an excellent job on that smaller project that I had no hesitation hiring them for the much larger driveway project. What makes this company so special is the owner, Jose, along with his crew and the excellent equipment he provides for them. Jose prepares his bids and directs his crew with the expectation that the work will be completed above code and as close to perfection as possible. During the two-day driveway project, Jose repeatedly asked whether I was satisfied with the work and whether there was anything else that needed attention. His concern continued even after the main job was finished. I mentioned that one sprinkler head was about an inch too high and that the outlet for a yard drainpipe could have been positioned better. Jose sent a crew member back on a third day to correct both items. The worker also removed a large pile of dirt that was not Supreme Concrete's responsibility. The crew was exceptional. I counted eight workers, and because I am retired, I was able to sit in my garage and watch them work for several hours. Their movements appeared almost choreographed. Everyone knew exactly what needed to be done, and they worked together efficiently and professionally. Each crew member appeared to take great pride in doing the job correctly. It was genuinely enjoyable and impressive to watch them work. Their teamwork is clearly a reflection of the close-knit group Jose has developed and supervises. I cannot adequately describe how pleased I was with every member of the crew. Jose has also equipped his employees with excellent machinery and tools, including trucks, backhoes, and seemingly every other piece of equipment needed to complete the work efficiently and properly. If you have a concrete project and need a dependable contractor, I do not believe you can do better than Jose and Supreme Concrete. I recommend them without hesitation.

That said, the job would have gone quicker if they had worked more than just a few hours each day. My problem was with the company itself. I hired them because of the generally good posted reviews. Most of the reviews mentioned that Mr. Klein himself was involved with doing and/or supervising the work being done. Not so in my case. The initial response from Yelp after I requested a quote I assume was from Mr. Klein. I was told he was unable to come out for the quote but he was sending someone named Luis, who did come out and work up a quote. He and Abel were the ones that actually did the work, with a third person at my house for just a couple of hours one day. At first Luis told me that Mr. Klein would come around a couple of times to check on things during the one week that they were here. Toward the end of the job I specifically asked about Mr. Klein since I had neither seen nor communicated with him after my quote request. When I asked Luis if my job had been subcontracted to him, he said that it had, and that Mr. Klein would in fact not be coming to our house at all. The fact is that I used this company based upon reviews of the work done for others in which Mr. Klein was usually directly involved. This lack of transparency is not OK. If Mr. Klein was not going to be involved in at least occasional on site supervision of the work, I should have been told that this job would be subcontracted out before I agreed to hire this company. Even if Luis and Abel work for this company on a regular basis, I feel that I should have been told up front that Mr. Klein was not going to be involved. It's just a business transparency thing from my perspective.

A&F Concrete did an excellent job installing a 20' sidewalk and a very nice 5x5 foot masonry wall…read more As instructed, San Diego Buff concrete was used for the sidewalk. I was given an excellent variety of bricks/blocks to choose for the wall, and the one I chose was competently installed. I was pleased to note the block I chose would be sourced from RCP in Chula Vista, where I have been a regular customer. The two workers agreed to relocate the existing pavers for my reuse as part of the original job. I really appreciated that. Although I was in no hurry, the job was completed quite expeditiously with the exception of the iron gate, the installation of which was subcontracted (and reviewed separately). The final results please me immensely. A&F solved a major problem, and I recommend the company to all.

Dean and Robert didn't just do great work. They earned my trust…read more My wife designed the layout and my engineer contributed specifications. What impressed me is that Dean and Robert took both and made them better, using their real knowledge of how concrete works. The control joints are placed right, they put in real drainage with actual drains and grading built throughout, and it looks clean and classy without being overdone. Flatwork around the entire house, driveway, front yard, backyard, both sides, fencing, gates. Did they get everything perfect on the first pass? Almost. What separates them is that when something was off, they owned it completely. No excuses, no pushback, just fixed. They paid attention to details that other contractors I quoted either missed entirely or only caught after I nudged them. Dean caught everything without me saying a word. Every day at the end of their shift they cleaned up and secured the site, even when it wasn't convenient. Robert ran a tight field operation and cared about every detail like his reputation depended on it. I have a young kid at home and that told me everything about who these guys are. I had my own engineer come out and review the work on-site. He looked around and said, unprompted, "You've got a great crew here." Engineers don't hand out compliments. That meant something. These guys come from commercial construction and brought that level of expertise to a residential job without going overkill. I actually spotted their truck at another client's property. Here's my honest take: if my mom needed this much work done and I couldn't be there to check in, I would still trust Dean to make sure she was taken care of. That's the highest thing I can say.
