Morgan is very close to my home and it seemed like a no brainer to come here after seeing so many good reviews. If you're reading this, save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere. Perhaps this business was good at one time, but my experience was incredibly unprofessional and predatory. They withheld information from me that resulted in a warranty claim being denied, they recommended multiple services that they later admitted wouldn't be helpful, and they were generally very unprofessional. They even ignored me for nearly two weeks on two different occasions after I provided them warranty documentation they literally asked me for. They can say whatever they want about the vehicle itself (it wasn't treated super well by the previous owner), but there is no excuse for the customer experience I received. Non responsive, rude, predatory practices, and even trying to have someone inspect an issue that doesn't even work on cars. Just go somewhere else. read more

A genius named Thomas is at the head of this repair shop. He fixed my 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora after all the other shops had given up on it. I gave him the car's dismal history and he said, "We fix everything that comes in here." He did something apparently no one else had thought of. He consulted a map of the electrical system and discovered a wiring error, then successfully repaired the car. The price was a third of what I expected to pay. I came to Morgan Automotive based on reviews. I wanted to a buy a 2005 luxury import off Craigslist that seemed like a decent purchase to me: looked good, drove well, nothing obviously wrong mechanically. Around 125K miles. I called Tom on a Saturday, and even though it was getting near closing he was very accommodating. Tom was a delight to work with. He's very personable and extremely knowledgeable. To my surprise he found what he estimated to be $2000 more in repairs than the negotiated selling price of the car! I was shocked. He advised me to walk away (obviously). $110 inspection saved me a huge, expensive headache. I was impressed by his affability, professionalism and thoroughness. I would not hesitate to use his services again, esp. for an inspection prior to purchase. read more

Very poor / sloppy work. They may be nice but are not competent. 1] They replaced the battery on the my Mazda truck but left bolts loose on both the tie down strap & the negative terminal. 2] Overcharged $53 to replace the battery which is a 5-10 minute job. 3] Overcharged $12 to dispose of my old Wiper blades & battery - which they likely collected at lease a $5 recycle credit. Insult to injury - poorly done work at inflated prices. Competitors such as Les Schwab or Wall Mart do not charge to install a battery or wiper blades if purchased there. Perhaps they left the Negative Battery Terminal loose hoping it would cause another failure like the ECU computer, hoping for another over charge. My recommendation - look elsewhere for an honest & competent mechanic. read more

Seriously, I have to be the voice of reason here? Apparently, another Jake P. posted a negative review just as I was getting my last service here -- weird, but it caught the owner's eye when I mentioned I was planning a Yelp review. Okay, for starters, if you're taking your cherry 1967 Chevy into an auto mechanic's shop *you're doing it wrong*. Owning that kind of precision classic or any other requires that you learn how to maintain it yourself. Stop complaining if you're going to be so picky about your vehicle. How about for the rest of us, for whom our vehicle is a prized method of conveyance? How about for those of us who are about to go on long trips on dangerous roads and want to feel safe in their vehicle's performance? Morgan Automotive rates very well there, if you ask me. I have been getting semi-regular service from them ever since they fixed a brake rotor issue leftover from a bad mechanic back on the East Coast. They provide quick and friendly service, and have some really interestingly colorful drivers if you need a lift somewhere, should you take the time to talk with them. Generally, I get my car back in 1-2 days even on major issues such as a recent engine oil leak. Brian, who works the front desk, is glad to explain things and has given me a pretty honest opinion about work that doesn't need to be done -- he's warned me of future service milestones, but hasn't even come close to pressuring me to have them taken care of outside my budget. I just spent only a little over $300 for work ranging from an oil change and wiper replacement to a tire rotation, transmission flush, and oil leak fix. They've never mishandled my 140,000+ mile Toyota, and they've worked on everything from the transmission to the tires to the AC. This car has been cross-country three times, and it's taken a beating -- but thanks in part to these fine folks, it seems I'll at least break 200k. My only complaint? They are pretty hard to get to these days, what with the Sellwood Max Line work over there near Powell. Once that's done they should actually be more convenient. read more

I made a Yelp account just to tell you about these guys. I have an old Honda Civic that is in need of frequent repairs. The last two times I've gone in (for two separate issues) I was very pleased with my experience with them. It's very rare that I feel like I can trust an auto shop since I got ripped off by a couple others around town. Bryan was very understanding of my budget situation and provided me with multiple repair options. He explained to me the issues with my car, what steps we could take to fix the immediate needs, and he also suggested additional repairs that could prevent further issues. Through all of this, he never once tried to sell me on things that I don't need. He was also very communicative with me on the phone before he had started any work on my car. I felt very involved in the entire process. Plus, these guys always go out of their ways to make you feel at home even if you know nothing about cars. They seem genuine and fair. Prime example of an honest small business working hard to provide great service for people. I highly recommend these guys if you need an auto shop you can trust. read more

The owner and/or the manager of the shop called me few months after posting on Google about my experience. I was very impressed by the courtesy and he told me that he will return the $45 that was charged for labor if I put down the review. I put down the review right after I got off the phone with him. When I received my refund in mail, I was not for the full amount of $45 as I was told on the phone. I received exactly half of that. I don't care about $22.50, its the whole ethics behind it. Telling a customer something else on the phone so they can take the review down, and than pay them just 50% of it. Sneaky right? This is also called half-ass service! One interesting thing I noticed is that on Google all their reviews are positive, yet they are all negative here at Yelp. That says something doesn't it? Original post on Google in 2011: Pretty disappointed! The shop charges too much for labor. I got changed $260 for just labor on alignment, drive belts, and MAF senor replacement (brought my own dealership parts). I told them that my fog lights are not working and they told that they will charge $45 to diagnose it. The bulbs were out and they still charged me $45 extra for simple diagnostic that probably took them 2 minutes. After the first time customer discount of $100 my total was pretty close to $200!!!!! I defiantly feel like I didn't really save any money. I really thought that they would not charge me the extra $45 for the diagnostics on a simple fog light bulb replacement. But they want every hard earned penny from you! I would have been very satisfied if they didn't charge to diagnose a simple bulb replacement. read more

I went to Morgan Automotive with my 2002 Audi Allroad last week. Bryan was so helpful in diagnosing the issues and by providing me options for repair. Due to the age of my beloved car, one of my options is to look for another vehicle. Bryan acknowledged the age, but also the beauty of the car, and offered his opinion that if it were his, he would repair it, to get a couple of more years, so that a less stressful decision on a new car could be made. I happily opted for that decision. He ordered the parts, and promised the car for the next day, and the wonderful staff were able to deliver on that promise; even in scorching August heat. read more

I take excellent care of my 1994 Toyota, and stay on top of all repairs and service. After taking my car in for an annual inspection, Morgan Automotive recommended $845 worth of repairs/maintenance, including an alignment. When I picked it up the next day (it took longer than they thought it would), I stopped at the store on my way home. While walking towards my car, I noticed that a chunk of the left, front hubcap was missing. I bent down and looked at it; the edge was fresh and jagged. I walked around the car and looked at the other hubcaps. The right, front hubcap also had pieces around the edge missing and cracks criss-crossing it. Also, it looked like there was some kind of substance smeared on one of the cracks. I immediately called Morgan Automotive and left a message on their voice mail. They called back the next work day, and Tom Morgan immediately made reference to how old the car was. He told me to bring it in. Well, the car may be old, but the hubcaps were purchased new at Les Schwab five years ago. When I brought the car in, Tom immediately suggested that I had damaged the hubcaps through wear and tear. I told him I am very observant when it comes to my car. He conceded one of the missing chunks looked fresh. Then he said he talked to the mechanic, and the mechanic said the hubcaps were brittle. OK, fine. Then why did they not say so when I picked up the car? "Oh, by the way, we had problems removing and replacing the hubcaps." Perhaps Tom and his mechanic thought a female wouldn't notice or care. Well, this female did. He offered to replace the hubcaps but only in the most grudging manner. I'll buy my own hubcaps to replace the ones Morgan's damaged. I hope the other repairs were handled more competently. I told my neighbor (who recommended Morgan) about this, and he acknowledged he hadn't used them in a while. read more

Any big repairs on my car I take here. This is the first repair shop to make me feel like I'm not getting cheated out of money. They've fixed all my car problems at a reasonable cost, which is much appreciated when you are a poor college student. Repairs are timely and are usually finished that day unless waiting for a part to come in. This is also the first auto shop to not try and sell me on all the other unnecessary things I need to replace on my car. I've never written a review on yelp before because I've never found a place that really "wowed" me on their customer service but I highly recommend this shop. read more

I've had two experiences with Morgan and overall I am disappointed. While they may come across as thorough, they mostly came across as money-grabbing. Here's a few more details. I have a 1996 honda civic, and a headlight bulb that burnt out twice in a year. First time I took it to Jiffy Lube and they fixed the bulb for ~$20 or so. That lasted less than a year, so I took it to Morgan's. They insisted on replacing the entire Headlight, which was like $250 or so for each (they graciously gave me a discount so it was only about $400 for the pair). They convinced me that just replacing the bulb was insufficent. This time my driver side power door window was off kilter (still rolling partially but off track, I rolled it down with a sticker attached to the inside and that messed it up) and the clerk said I'd need to replace the entire window seal around the window. He gave a rough estimate of cost as 2 hours of labor + roughly $150-200 part. It was a rough estimate of about $350-400. When I asked if there was any way around that, he didn't even say, well maybe, let me take a look. I needed it done now, and they couldn't so I left. I then took my car to a different auto shop which rather than talking to me for 5 minutes about it, just opened up the door, tested for a few common sites of broken parts (which were intact and working fine), slipped it back into place, and 5 minutes later I drove away with a functional window like it was before. They didn't even charge me for it because it took so little effort!! Morgan had said they were super busy, which is fine, so it's not like they actually looked at it. Yet, I asked the mechanic if there was any chance of just getting it fixed quickly and he really shot me down, saying that he'd done many of these and it was pretty common. (A line used when they sold me on the headlights) In the end, I feel cheated by them. I can see how they might want to 'do things the right way' or something like that, but on my beat up super old car, spending $400 is about 1/3 to 1/4 of the cost of the car. Being thorough is not a bad quality, but they really missed the mark on this one. In the end, I'm glad they didn't have time for me today, as I've $400 richer because of it. Morgan Automotive is the worst! I have had 2 very similar experiences with them. Both times they charged me over double the market price for my parts. They also ordered these parts before they even looked at my car. I called ahead of time and told them it would be towed there after hours and he ordered a bunch of parts. I don't believe I needed everything that he charged me for after talking to other mechanics. I STRONGLY recommend you take your business elsewhere, these people are NOT HONEST!!!! read more

A little out of the way, but worth the trip. These guys are in a little pocket of SE Portland near the train tracks. I've used this garage for about 10 years and they are great. Their charges are reasonable and they do honest work. They always get my car in right away, maybe I wait a day or two but it never takes long. They're reliable, and finish repairs when they say they will. Big Plus: You can borrow one of their loaner cars or get a ride while they work on your car. I have always been treated courteously by anybody who works here, and they explain as much as I need so I can understand exactly what is going on with the car. I don't write these reviews for every little thing, but this business has been a big help to me in managing my car headaches and expenses, so I'd encourage you to give them a try. read more

I can't believe the complaints other people have about this place...they were one of the best auto shop experiences I've ever had! (The Google reviews seem more accurate.) I'm always skeptical about taking my car to new shops and being ripped off but this place is great! Brian at the front desk is super helpful and friendly. The brake job ended up taking longer than expected (VWs like to be difficult) but I was still charged exactly what I was quoted over the phone. I didn't take advantage of it but appreciated the shuttle service they offer as well. They also didn't go looking for/making up problems that needed to be fixed...did what I asked and nothing more. After getting a recommendation from my brother-in-law, I went to Morgan when my thermostat started triggering my check engine light. Not only did I get a fair price on a coolant flush/thermostat replacement, but they actually explained what was going on with my car. I can't stress this enough: this has NEVER happened with my dealership. As someone who isn't a car expert, being shown the problem and why it needs to be replaced was astounding. And the manager said everything without being condensing or rude. Not only did I drive away with a fixed car, but also a bit smarter about cars in general. My very recent experience with Morgan Automotive was a very good one. It was my first visit. I was in town for only a few days, and Morgan's took my car in the day I called. They drove me to the house where I was staying, and returned the same afternoon to take me back to the shop. My Honda Odyssey is 18 years old and has over 200,000 miles on it. I've driven it and had it serviced regularly since 1997 and hope to have it for another 18 years. In other words, I take good care of it, but at this age, it is beginning to require more than oil and tires. This time it was the radiator and an oil leak. Cars break down and it can be costly to repair them. That's just a fact of life with cars. Bryan, Thomas and Matt were all very courteous and helpful. They took me back into the shop to look under and in the car to see the problems before they did any repairs, and explained the problems to me. I am an older woman with only basic knowledge of the workings of my car, but knowledgeable enough to carry a quart of oil under the seat, and am glad of it. I do not believe I was taken advantage of at Morgan Automotive and was relieved that the bill wasn't higher. Mostly I was relieved that when I drove the 250 miles home, my car ran perfectly. After reading many positive reviews and learning that Morgan Automotive had been voted Best Auto Repair 2006 on Citysearch, I made an appointment for my dying Volkswagen. At the end of the day they called me to tell me that virtually everthing was wrong with my car, that everything they found was causing my problem, and that everything was urgent. $1500 later I picked up my car with their assurance that my problem had been fixed. It was apparent as I was driving out of their parking lot that the problem was not fixed at all, so the next day I brought it back to them. I asked them to look for anything that could be causing the problem, and mentioned a few very specific things to check. A couple hours later they told me that nothing aside from the previously suggested motor mount replacement (they said my engine was about to fall out) was wrong and that my car was ready to pick up. Once again, the problem was apparent as I drove away. These guys had no idea what they were doing, or what to look for. I felt like they overcharged me, and had no faith or trust in them whatsoever. My car sat undriveable for a month before I took it to Heckmann & Theimann (see my review), a VW specialist, and had my car fixed quickly and for much less money. They also said that my motor mounts did not need to be replaced, which would have been an unecessary $800 repair at Morgan Auto. read more

I have been a mechanic before and I still do most of my own repairs myself, but I like to have a place to take my car for the occasional diagnosis, or I just don't feel like crawling around on the garage floor and just want to get it done. Morgan used to be that place. I felt like my satisfaction was their number one concern. Basically I didn't get the sleazy scammy feeling i get at most mechanics, which is the reason I do my own work in the first place. So I used to get these warm fuzzy feelings when I got work done there, and I recommended them to all my friends and family. I used to get the feeling that my business was the most important thing, not my money, if that makes any sense. Then they got a new guy running the place, or it changed owners, or whatever, there's a new guy in charge there, and here comes that old familiar ooky feeling. Now it's like going to Jiffy Lube, with all the upselling, and the prices are way out of line with the work done. This is not one incident I'm talking about here either. Worst of all, I sent my mom to them for a super easy oil leak fix, which, not so incidentally, I located beforehand and sent a diagram with her so they'd know what was going on. She comes away with a new radiator? If she did need one, and I'm not saying it's not a good bit of preventative maintenance, but the parts for a new radiator are about $250. I know because I have the same kind in my car and I just did my own after Morgan pointed out a dangerous "discoloration" of my radiator (It was dust). But I checked out the seet took two hours and I don't have the luxury of having a lift in my garage. They charged her $700. They shafted my mom! They tried to shaft me a couple times too. Some of the things they say, and with a straight face, like I'm some kind of idiot doesn't know the difference between a hammer and a screwdriver... One star because they do decent work, and one star for nostalgia about the good old days before they got all skeezy. Minus three for taking advantage of a little old lady, trying to bullshit a bullshitter, and making me have to search for a trustworthy shop again. read more

I was very impressed with the friendly helpful attitude and service I received from Morgan Auto. I decided to replace my alternator myself and was having trouble removing the belt pulley from the existing alternator. I had called several shops near my house and all of them told me I would need to book an appointment and there would be a minimum charge to help me out. I simply needed the right tool and 5 minutes of a mechanics time. When I called Morgan Automotive the gentleman that answered the phone was so polite and quickly said come on down we can help you out. I arrived at the shop and the mechanic stopped what he was doing and removed the alternator pulley immediately. I was so happy I wanted to at least give him $10 bucks but he would not accept it. I recommend this shop to anyone who wants quick, fair and friendly service read more

It seems Morgan's had some problems in 2011 and earlier, as the dates of most of the negative reviews apparently indicate. But ever since then they have been the best garage in Portland, imo. They are always honest and do top quality work. They even told me I didn't need a tune up and saved me the cost! They do a great job of helping you decide what to have done, they give great discounts, their cost is low, the quality is high, and they give you a ride home and pick you up when your car is done. They are a great outfit, I wouldn't take my car anywhere else in Portland. read more

I own a small car lot in Gresham Oregon and I recently had a customer take a truck from my lot to Morgan Automotive. I went in to talk to Thomas Morgan, the owner, and was greeted with a very bad attitude and he refused to inform me of what might be needed to fix the problems if any. Come to find out there was nothing wrong with the truck and my customer was misinformed. Thomas was very rude and asked me to leave the shop. I will never do business with this shop again. I would suggest that anyone looking for a fair report on their car or truck go elsewhere. read more

Please don't take your car here. Didn't do what I asked them to do. I replaced spark plugs myself and there were two different brands of spark plugs on my car, all with carbon build-up. I had asked them to check these and they had said they were fine. I also tricked them...I have a code reader and had diagnosed myself what was wrong with the car and they weren't even close to what it was that was wrong. Either they have no idea what they are doing, or they are trying to scam you for parts/labor. read more
