This place is exactly what it claims to be - a clam shack. Focus is on fried seafood made fresh at fair prices. We ordered the smaller size of full-bellied clams and fried scallops. The plate of clams and fries that came out would have been more than enough for the 2 of us!! Soooo good! And the scallops were sea scallops - the big ones - not bay scallops which was a great surprise!! We ate outdoors by a giant shark statue. The place has a beach nautical look to it. Great seating upstairs, a good amount of ventilation. Nice sun room with a breeze. Everything had that just-out-of-the-fryer taste, and service was quick even with a crowd. Parking could be better, and we noticed a few younger staff weren't as helpful as they could've been. Some elderly guests had to go up and down the stairs for things that staff easily could have assisted with. Flo's is an iconic summer destination in Rhode Island. Located across from the Town Beach in Middletown, you get the benefit of the ocean breeze through the open windows of their ground floor dining room or second floor deck. There is a small dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant on Wave Avenue, but the spaces are not delineated and there are no marked handicap slots. You find a table in the dining area, put your order in at the outside counter, then pick it up at the inside counter. I ordered the clam strip roll platter with a canned soda. With the tax and a small tip, it came to $25. Since I use a cane, it would have been nice if someone helped me get my tray to my table, but I was left to struggle with it myself. The young staff was friendly, just not terribly aware. The portions were large and the clams had a nice, light crispy batter, although they were pretty greasy. I didn't eat the toasted hot dog bun they were served on. The coleslaw was a little peppery for my taste. And I don't care for battered fries, although these were okay with a good dousing of malt vinegar. I probably won't return. read more

Actually pretty great lunch option if you're visiting Newport. The actual town of Newport gets too packed during lunch hour and it an be impossible to find parking, so just drive over to Flo's. Portion sizes were big, the fish tasted fresh, great for families, quick service, and great combos. We ordered a mix of fish and chips, fish sandwiches, and shrimp and calamari to share. One of my all time favorite spots in Newport! I love their fish and chips combo! It is simple but oh so good! I've been going for two decades now and have always left full and happy! A very cool place to visit with a long history of being knocked down by hurricanes! The food did not impress though - granted I did not get the clams - a staple to the place. I got a "creamy" clam chowder and a cold lobster roll. Sorry, but being a Rhode Islander and have lived in Newport for a very long time, I was disappointed in my recent visit . I have visited this establishment for quite a while but the last two or three years have changed. I usually wait till after the busy summer season to stop by and usually try a cup of the Rhode Island. Chowder and the fried clams. The chowder is okay but the fried clams were disappointing. Not crispy and quite chewy. I knew the rating wasn't very good before coming here so I didn't have great expectations. The only reason we went here was because it was the closest walkable distance from the beach. The food is so overpriced and it wasn't very good. The lobster roll sounded great but it was very average. The lobster was fresh however soaked in just plain water and butter, there was no flavor really. I don't get why there is lettuce in there either. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. Take out window or you can sit down look at the menu and then order at the window. There is indoor and outdoor seating and a gravel parking lot and more public parking down the street. The world famous clam cakes were 96% bread, which I was under the assumption that there would be clam pieces inside. Really the clam pieces are tiny. The lobster roll was pretty decent but not the best in Newport by any means. You can get it with either mayo or you can get it with butter. I do not recommend getting the platter because you don't get a whole Lotta fries or coleslaw so it's not really worth it. The fried clams half plate is market price, but it is worth it because it's lightly fried and they fried the whole clams and they're pretty generous with portions. read more

Every time we go to Flo's we have a great experience! This time we decided to get the baked scrod with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and a salad. The scrod is cooked perfectly; it's flakey, buttery and goes great with the mashed potatoes. The potatoes were so flavorful and creamy. We also got a lobster bisque, which tasted great and had that nice chowder consistency. Part of me wishes they would add some pieces of lobster or clam to it so it wasn't just soup. We also got two frozen lemonades, since we were thirsty after a day on the beach. These were so yummy! My only gripe was that you get a pretty small glass and from what I gauge they were a little pricey. This place is self service, so you have to go to a counter and order your food. I find this to be quite easy and quick, but I understand it can be confusing for some since there is a raw bar upstairs and you can order certain things up there. There are lots of places to sit, some outside and some indoors. Overall it is a cozy place with great seafood and a nice view since it's right by the beach. read more

A Newport area staple!! I had so many RI natives recommend this spot to us! Classic "seafood shack" side of the road New England joint! The fried clamcakes were my favorite - gotta dip them in the chowdah. Creamy all the way!! Their clam chowder was actually way better than I was expecting. Top 10 in New England for me for sure!! My husband loved the stuffed quahog (stuffie) and the bite I took was spicy and flavorful. Like a stuffed clam if you're never had this RI staple. The clam strips were good on the first couple bites but they were VERY greasy and the batter kept falling off. They only gave us 2 little half filled cups of tartar sauce and I am one that likes more with my clam strips - why they hogging the sauce?! Tartar sauce aside, it was a great lunch. My friend had a fried oyster sandwich that seemed to be a success. Overall the food was mostly fine, but a bit one note (deep fried!). If you are in the mood for a quick and somewhat reasonably priced fried seafood meal, in a place with some accumulated, historical "atmosphere." this could be your spot. The food has always been 4 to 5 Stars except for this year on April 20th! We ordered 3 dozen Clam cakes to take home. When we returned home, All 3 dozen were Gritty and some had pieces of Shell in them! They obviously get a 1 Star this year but because of our past patronage, we will give them another try with the hope that this is not a downward slide! read more

I love fried clams and my husband found Flo's because we were on the hunt for fried clams while traveling in Newport. This is a very rustic little shack with both indoor and outdoor seating. Don't expect much as it's a no-frills place. The cutest thing about the shack is the bamboo walkway from the parking lot in back up to the building; It's pretty basic on the inside with too many tchotchkes all over the walls. We walked in and chose a table as they suggested we do first. There are menus at our table, but you place your order outside at a window. My husband placed our order at the window and received a pager to notify us when our order was ready. There is no table service at this restaurant. That may explain the sticky tables. The staff really needs to be aware of when people leave to come out and wipe down the tables. I wanted an iced tea, but the restaurant doesn't serve iced tea, I thought that was pretty weird because iced tea is a basic drink that restaurants have. My husband and I ordered a lobster roll and fried clams, which we shared. The lobster roll was overflowing with huge chunks of tender and sweet lobster. It came with a packet of mayonnaise so the lobster was not mixed with the mayo and celery. It also didn't come with the usual potato chips on the side. The fried clams, though, were the star of the show for me. Lightly breaded, these clams were served hot and crispy. I don't know how they did it, but the clams were just airy and light. They were the best fried clams I've ever had. Eating the clams brought me back to when my parents used to take us to Howard Johnson's for the fried clams. Of course, Flo's blows Howard Johnsons away, but the memory was sweet. They've been featured on Food Network TV, the Cooking Channel and the Travel Channel. The only reason why I'm giving this restaurant 4 stars is for the amazing fried clams. I should be taking away more than 1 star for the misses...sticky tables, lobster not already mixed with mayo and celery , and no iced tea. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and the line was pretty long. You order, seat yourself and grab food when it's ready. Tried the raw seafood sampler, which had oysters, clams, lobster, shrimp, and crab legs. It was ok; expensive for what you get. Also got their infamous clam cakes, which was mostly flour and had very little clams in it. Clam chowder was less creamy than I expected but still good. Fried clams were delicious! Very nicely fried and big enough to be pretty meaty. Fries were nice and crispy and cole slaw was pretty good. Frozen lemonade was fine. This is a casual spot next to the beach with some good seafood options. Prices are a bit on the high end but expected based on the location. Service was relatively quick. I definitely recommend trying the fried clam platter but you could probably do without the rest. read more

If you are looking for some fresh seafood at affordable prices in Newport, this is a great spot to try! We came here because it was walking distance from our Airbnb for the weekend. It is right by a beach and is in such a cute location. They have indoor seating as well as a large patio. Their menu options are actually quite affordable and there are tons of different routes to take with ordering (platters, combos, a la carte, raw bar, etc). They also have some non-seafood items if you came here wanting something else. We got some pitchers of beer, they were only $17 for domestic beer. My husband wanted to try several different types of fried seafood, so he got the Flo's Fisherman Platter--it was MASSIVE! He could only eat about half of it and left with tons of leftovers. It came with fried clams, clam strips, calamari, shrimp, scallops, fish, clam cake, and even fries. I went with a cup of clam chowder and the small size of a la carte fried shrimp! I loved the clam chowder, it satisfied the craving for some authentic chowder. I was surprised at how much shrimp came in the small a la carte size, it was definitely enough for a full meal. My husband and I really liked our food for the taste, quality of the seafood, quantity, and pricing. We had some friends who got the lobster roll and they said it wasn't the best. The lobster roll is described as "on a toasted buttered roll with mayo on the side" which makes it sound like one of the hot buttered style rolls. People were surprised when it came out as a cold lobster roll instead and they said it only tasted okay. Couple that with an ice cold Narragansett logger, and a nice view from the upper deck with the seabreeze coming in, it's perfect for a summer afternoon. Flo's has been here for a long time. They know what they're doing! One of the things I appreciate most about Flo's is that they keep the oil fresh so the seafood is light with slight crunch not saturated. Quite frankly it's perfect. Friendly staff working hard to ensure orders come out hot and fresh which keeps us loyally coming back. Great seafood menu options fiery stuffed QUAHOG'S, homemade chowder, Greek salads, a serious raw bar, fried seafood platters with scallops, clams, oysters, and shrimp. They also offer cheeseburgers, and hotdogs. And of course, beer! A minor frustration is the lack of parking. The restaurant has four or five parking spots in the rear of the building, but it's very tight so good luck because it's rarely an option. read more
