The matcha dessert was one of the best desserts I've ever had! The combination of matcha mousse + chiffon cake + the sorbet had a wonderful dance in my mouth. I don't love desserts that are too sweet, but they did this one right! Besides that, I'd highly recommend the braised cod. It was extreeeemely tender. The pork in the pork bun was rich in flavor and soft. However the soft shell crab roll was just okay, and I wish it came with a larger portion. The restaurant locates in the Andaz hotel which itself is probably worth a visit due to its modern and zen aesthetic. Discrimination against disabled persons... We arrived at reservation time. Told table not ready. I sat at bar and my wife stood behind me because all chairs taken. I'm disabled and can barely walk with cane and her help. After 20 minutes of waiting,, the hostess came over and said our table still wasn't ready but we couldn't "loiter" in bar, we would need to wait outside. when my wife explained my disability and pointed out it was raining outside, the hostess said Hawaii state law forbids standing in bars. when we refused to go outside in the rain, she became very upset. Moments later the hostess came back with large bouncer and said our reservation was canceled. Then they forced us outside. I've never been treated so poorly. read more

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Chef Morimoto more than life itself. My husband and I are on our honeymoon and this was the one place we had to go no matter what. MAKE A RESERVATION BEFORE YOUR TRIP! It's a little confusing on how to get to the restaurant itself after you have your car valet parked. It gets validated by the restaurant, so it's free! You'll go down all the stairs to the bottom pool and hang a right. It's tucked away in the corner and the atmosphere is so calm and beautiful. The service from the start is wonderful. We let them know ahead of time we were celebrating our honeymoon so it was nice to have the hostess and our server congratulate us! The food was beyond fantastic. I know morimoto is known for how well he uses fish in his dishes, and we are in Hawaii...but the Porkchop was the most devine Porkchop I have ever eaten. The house made kimchi as well, I couldn't get enough. The wagyu steak Bibimbap Special I couldn't turn down. The cooked the steak on the bowl it was served in. I could eat both dishes every day. The sticky ribs we ordered for a hot appetizer had the best sweet and spicy sauce on it, I couldn't eat them fast enough. The doughnuts that were not on the menu were great but what truly brought the dish home was the carmel and toasted coconut dipping sauce. I could bathe in that. The food was extremely underwhelming. The Toro tartar was super fishy, and the added sauces only served to mask the fishiness. The sea bass was dry and not at the expectation level of an iron chef restaurant. The Bi bim bap had flavor but was again hindered by very fishy protein. My son had the kids waygu...we asked for it medium rare and got well done with slightly medium rare for the middle piece. All in all, an extremely disappointing and pricey culinary experience. Morimoto was a great experience. The food was very decadent and super tasty. Our server was the nicest guy ever. He provided very great service and did not miss. My absolute favorite dish from this course was certainly the soft shell crab bao bun. I definitely recommend trying it over the kakuni bun because it has an amazing crunch to it that pairs so well with the bao bun. Only reason I gave this place 4/5 is because of the seating arrangement. It wasn't as intimate as I thought it would be. Typically you would expect to sit at a restaurant with just you and your party, but in Morimoto's you almost shared a table with another party. This was even inside seating and almost shared a booth with another 2 person party. The only thing separating us was a tiny wall. It was very crammed and hard to fit. What an experience to dine at Morimoto while we are in Maui at the Andaz Wailea resort. They seem very busy but we're able to get a reservation for the same night at 7:30pm. When we arrived we were greeted right away and confirmed our reservation and seated right away. Our server was awesome and helped guide us through the menu. We started with a Morimoto Sake Flight and two appetizers. The tuna poke tacos and sticky ribs. We also got a side order of the Hamakua Mushrooms. For dinner we shared the Chefs Combination of 20 nigiri and 2 maki rolls. Let's start with the appetizers, the tuna poke tacos are delicious but a bit on the tiny side. Still they had lots of flavor and the sauce went perfect with them. The sticky ribs held the spotlight for the appetizers. Fall of the bone with that sticky sauce and a little crispy crunch from the sauce caramelized around the quick fry of the ribs. The chef combination was very delicious and worth ordering again. The presentation was simple but the focus and flavor was about the fish and nothing else. I know some would expect more flare and sauce, but we loved the simple focus on the fish and the flavor and taste the each provide. Before I finish the review I saved the Hamakua mushrooms for last. We got them on the side before the nigiri. The mushrooms are fabulous, buttery flavorful and dreamy all in one bite. We enjoyed every single piece as we discussed how much each bite tasted. In short we loved the mushrooms and the whole experience. The place is very nice with great views of the ocean and property. The service was great and our server was very helpful and a pleasure to chat with. His background and experience helped us make good decisions with our meal. *sigh* I tried so hard to like this place cause it was at the Andaz where I stayed at. Hmm.... I guess it's not fair to compare sushi with sushi I've had in Japan or LA lol but I really thought it was going to be so good, but okay with all jokes aside.... We really paid 18$ for the most basic miso soup ! And it was literally a bowl of just chunks of tofu and slithers of green onion. That was it. I was turned off immediately. The spicy tuna and eel rolls were ehh. I mean I couldn't tell the difference If I was having sushi from the market or fine dining? Nothing special. Their ribs were the best dish and their cocktail Pele's kiss (it packs a punch). But honestly, I don't understand the hype, I wish they weren't so skimpy on their portions and ingredients. Made a reservation for 3 people for dinner weeks in advance and informed them we wanted outside seating. They noted that but told us outside seating is first come first served. They called to confirm the day of the reservation and I told them again that we wanted outside seating and they said they noted it in the system. We arrived before the restaurant opened and we were the first to arrive. I spoke to hostess and she said there should be no problem to get outside seating. When they opened, they took is to a 2-person table!! Then they left us standing there for several long, awkward minutes while they sat other people. Then 2 people came in succession to explain that they don't want to lose one seat by joining to 2-person tables and they have to seat us inside. REALLY?!! Wow! However, the food is very overpriced. $130 for 27 thin sliced sashimi. $45 for four half shot sakes. I guess 80% of the price went to the location. The best dish was the ube cheesecake, which had a very original ube flavor and some sour cream sauce. Mikey was our sever and he was super knowledgeable about the menu and genuinely cared about giving us a good experience. This was our second visit to Morimoto, and we will continue to come back. We ordered the rock shrimp, sticky ribs (absolutely amazing), pork gyoza, a few orders of sashimi, rolls, and a hand roll. Everything was absolutely delicious and the setting/ambience was great. Super laid back vibe which is perfect when on vacation on the islands. Service from Mikey and the food runners/bussers was great. Waters were constantly being filled and table bussing was fast and efficient through each course. It's a little pricy, but so it absolutely everything on the islands. Came here in between lunch and dinner and was lucky enough to get a table for two. Ordered the sticky ribs for an appetizer and a yellowtail and shrimp tempura roll and chef's sushi sampler. Everything was amazing! The ribs had a very creative texture and sauce to die for while the meat fell of the bone. The fish was really fresh and cut perfectly so it melted in your mouth. We told our server Michael that we had spa appointments and needed to be out in 45 minutes. He brought everything in a jiffy and even anticipated we would need to check ASAP. The sticky ribs were amazing, practically falling off the bone so you can enjoy them without the mess. We also got the rock shrimp, and we would recommend asking for the sauce on the side and the shrimp stays light and crispy. The black cod has a great sweet and savory sauce, it's super tender. It has a small # of tables inside, as well as an outdoor patio. We had a nice table inside. It was right near the open kitchen so we could watch the chefs prepare food. Its always fun to do that. We started with appetizers. I had the rock shrimp tempura - spicy kochujan sauce, wasabi aioli. I would not call this tempura as it was shrimp covered in the two sauces. Definitely not traditional tempura but it was still tasty. Both sauces were a bit spicy but not too bad. Shrimp was nicely cooked. Mom had the Morimoto maui onion soup, Parmesan crisp, chive. She really liked this. It was a thin broth but really had a typical French onion soup flavor. I had a couple of bites too and really liked it. We both had the braised black cod with ginger-soy reduction for our entrees. This was nice flaky mild white fish with a really nice sauce. Easy to eat. For a side, we had the Kula corn. Very similar to Mexican street corn with the mayo and cotija cheese. Really good but messy to eat. We had a good service though our waiter was a bit snooty about the food from Morimoto. We had been dying to try Morimoto and scored a 4:00pm reservation a few weeks ago. Upon arriving, ambiance was pretty nice, even though the restaurant itself is right by the hotel's pool where there were lots of children and people everywhere. However, maybe if our dinner would have been at a later time, there wouldn't have been so many children everywhere. We started out with cocktails, but neither were impressive. Both were more "strong" than refreshing and enjoyable. But at least you get your money's worth in the alcohol department. For our two entrees, we had a seared local fish and the buri bop. The seared local fish was so nice, and we really enjoyed all the flavors and sides. The buri bop was out of this world, and we were so impressed. It was an incredible dish that was SO worth getting. I have celiac and found the menu pretty hard to navigate. I was really in the mood for sushi, but unfortunately, every single sushi roll they make contains gluten (not just cross contamination, but actually contains gluten)? I have never experienced that before and was a little surprised and disappointed. Luckily, I'll eat just about anything and still felt like I had other good options to pick from. The third drink we got (Katana's revival) was actually nice and would recommend that one for sure. Our server was very knowledgeable, helpful with the gluten thing, and kind. Morimoto Maui is not what I consider a "typical sushi" restaurant - one where you sit down and whisper, "Omakase..." to the waiter before one reverential piece of nigiri after another is placed in front of you. No, Morimoto Maui is in a luxury hotel and features menu items like Angry Chicken and an $11 edamame starter. Many of the dishes could be called pan-Asian: kochujang, Thai cocounut curry, and baos all making appearances. Reflexively, I sometimes greet menus like these with doubt and lump them into the thoughtless Fusion category, alongside restaurants like Wokcano and Sushilicious. But that is not fair. Morimoto's menu is no more diverse than Hawaii's own multi-cultural Local Food and my feelings are based on flawed ideas of authenticity. Fuck pigeonholing restaurants/chefs. That being said ... I stuck to the sushi menu. I was feeling boring and am more risk-averse when paying small fortunes. No $39 yellowtail bibimbap for me today. Instead I had to decide between the Chef's Combination sushi for 45/90 or a pick-your-own-adventure approach. The 45 set makes the most sense because it comes with 5-piece maki and 9 pieces of nigiri. The a la carte menu has each single nigiri coming in at a median of $6. The verdict? Not bad but not good. The sushi experience at Morimoto is not too different from Sugarfish, in that both are chain restaurants with set menus. But the Morimoto set has more premium nigiris which almost make it a better value. (See scallop and eel.) If only it were not for the cool rice, persistent upselling, and $5 upcharge for sparkling water. Oh, and the sushi was only passable; the scallop was a step away from mushy. Maybe I should have listened to the Eater article, "You don't need to eat at ... Morimoto anymore." 3.5. This is the third Morimoto restaurant I've dined in, and the first for dinner service. There were some high points, some low points. First, the high points. The appetizers we ordered were delicious. We ordered the hamachi fish tacos, pork gyoza, and the rock shrimp tempura. I've had the gyoza and shrimp tempura before, and they're just as delicious as I remembered. The fish tacos were good too. The desserts were yummy as well. We got the doughnuts, that came with 3 different dipping sauces, and the house made ice cream/sorbets. All were fantastic and beautifully presented. The outside seating is beautiful. I believe we had the best table - away from the noisy inside dining with an ocean view. The pool next to the outdoor seating is closed so you don't have to worry about being splashed while you eat. And the wait staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Now the low points. Our entrees came at different times, which we didn't discuss with the waiter, because we had a family emergency we were focusing on (our family dog ran away due to fireworks, but she's now home safe!). The waiter apologized for the discrepancy, stating the hot dishes came out too fast before they made the sushi. So my father, the only one who ordered sushi, ate last. Dessert was given on the house, and we appreciated that. My sister's miso soup was delicious, as well as my dad's sushi. My mom had a salad that came with calamari that was good too, and plentiful. My sea urchin carbonara was ok. I like the flavor of uni, but I don't think it went well with the components of the carbonara. Maybe my palette isn't sophisticated enough. I was thinking of getting the sashimi, but I wanted to try something different. The restaurant is located by the pool area at the Andaz Hotel. It's a bit of a walk to get there. I'm not sure where you would be able to take an elevator, so that's something to ask the front desk when you get there. I wouldn't mind dining at this location again, and I will most likely keep dining at his restaurants. I think the best course of action for this location is to order a bunch of appetizers and other dishes you can share. And you can never go wrong with the sushi here. read more

This was hands down the worst dining experience of our entire trip. Two stars only for service which was attentive and quick. First of all, the ambiance. We were seated at an awkward table behind the bar which completely blocked our view of the sunset. This table was also on a major foot traffic path and basically on top of the bar patrons which included screaming drunk young adults. Not our type of place. We both opted for the chef nigiri special. This ten piece special did not include any of the higher quality fish and one of the pieces was an egg omelette, which is definitely a rip off. Each piece of nigiri had about 50% more rice than it should, especially considering how thinly sliced the fish was. Each piece of nigiri also had a piece of wasabi between the fish and rice, without any warning. As someone who does not enjoy wasabi, this ruined the whole experience. The spicy tuna roll was one of the better spicy tuna rolls that I've ever enjoyed Cocktails were underwhelming verging on unacceptable. I had one of the specials called a molokini mule. Despite this being a clear variation of a Moscow mule, it was served in a tall glass instead of a copper mug. The drink itself was also not great but I can't pinpoint exactly why. I did not drink it I recommend you skip dinner here and go down to kihei for more local, higher quality food. read more

So here is a truthful description of our visit to Morimoto on 6/14/22. We have been guests of Andaz for five days and our family looked forward to a great sushi experience at Morimoto, practically from the day we arrived. Our reservation was for 7:45. We arrived on time but we're not seated until 8:20. After settling-in and ordering a round of drinks, we were told that the chef, "Johnny", was "wrapping-up things early" and we had about 7 minutes to place our entire order. Fearful that we would not have the opportunity to pace ourselves and order a second "round" later, we had just minutes to place our entire dinner order or face the closure of the kitchen. Mind you, this was 8:50 on a Tuesday night. We placed our order and had less time than anyone would have liked to enjoy the $500 dinner we ordered. We were all very disappointed with the experience.
