I think it's pretty clear that the only people who shop here live within a 3-block radius, and are therefore just out of reach of Fairway, Whole Foods, or any other nice grocery store. While I concur with all of the other negative comments about this place (unhappy and rude employees, surprisingly expensive, not that clean), I think one particularly negative aspect of this store that has not been highlighted in other reviews is the smell. I want my grocery store to either have no smell or have a slightly positive smell (e.g. baked goods, etc.). This place has a bad and distinct smell that first greets you on the sidewalk and then permeates your entire MW shopping experience. Sometimes I am reticent to eat fresh food bought here due to the the lingering memory of this unpleasant odor. The one saving grace of this market is that they have a decent and sometimes reasonably priced beer selection. Like all of MW's other customers, I do still occasionally shop at MW, despite the aforementioned unpleasantries, as it is right down the block. I wish there was a way I could put NO stars for this rating... because this supermarket has gone from BAD to WORSE in the last few years. Someone else at this site, commented how expensive the few items were that he picked up at another nearby MW Ass Market on PAS ... their prices (if things are not on sale, are totally incredibly expensive) I guess they're trying to compete with Dags, Food Emporium & their ilk ... but they are no where near as classy ... nor is the food as fresh. I could hardly understand the night manager on March 11th. Plus she is as dumb as dirt. I had a rain-check for Andre Cheese Ravioli or Cavatelli and Perdue Chicken legs. Before I could show the checker my rain check for the ravioli/pasta (2/ $3.00) she rang it up ... and not on sale, they came to over $6!! Then she gave me a dirty look because she had to delete the entry. She had forgotten I told her I had a rain check. Then I put down the chicken ... which was now $1.39 a lb ... the item on sale on my rain check said $.89 lb a full 50 cents less a lb. The checker put the package on the scale and I said you can't do that because then you would be weighing the package ... and it's against the law to do that. I explained all she had to do was to multiply the weight on the package by $.89. This was beyond her comprehension!! On the package it was 1.66lbs on the scale it was 1.71lbs. She called the manager over ... who agreed with her ... I couldn't believe it!! She walked away when I was trying to explain that she couldn't do that. She told the checker not to give me the chicken ... in fact they didn't give me anything I had spent a half hour shopping for and had put there to check out. I had only gone back there 3 times until they finally got in some of the stuff I had rain checks for ... I got a couple of the last few packages of the things previously on sale and now I was being denied them because I fought for being charged the right price.. They always have a 'Help Wanted' sign in the window ... they do not know how to train their help ... they know nothing of customer service. I guess they only can get the dregs of the unemployed. Every month I go to a church with a group of people and make a meal for the poor and homeless. We ask local food stores for contributions. I've gone into MW Ass. many times and asked them for anything they would be discarding and have always been rejected. Yet every night they throw away the food from the food & salad bar ... tons of food, enough to feed 30-50 people. I consider this sinful ... they would rather have people go hungry than contribute food they are discarding anyway. A couple of months ago on 'The Person of the Week' ABC news on Fridays, a 13 yr old boy from FL wrote to his legislators to turn around the law about throwing out fresh food for fear of being sued. This 13 yr old was able to turn a whole state around, to see what a foolish practice this is, and the law was changed. This should happen in NYC as well, considering the poor population is growing everyday. It seems food is becoming a luxury item now, along with electricity and the telephone. I recommend avoiding ANY MW Ass. Market... shop at Whole Foods or Trader Joes before shopping at this poorly run and over-charging supermarket. read more

I'm confused... Everyone seems to hate this place, but it's my new fave. supermarket. I literally checked and rechecked the address each time I read one of the previous 4 reviews. Ok, so here's my dissenting opinion on why I like the place: - MUCH wider aisles than other groceries in the hood. Relatively larger than D'agostinos and the Associated on Park Ave. - I've been happy with the produce, I've never seen dust or maggots or anything rotten. -I like the separate area with dairy and bread... I dunno why, I just do. Sure, the checkout girls have attitudes, but I've come to expect that. For the most part, NYC checkout girls are some of the unhappiest I have ever encountered. Nothing like the friendly gals at the Winn Dixie or Piggly Wiggly of my youth. (I was shamed today for bringing my own shopping bag. "OOOOH, look at her! Homegirl's savin' the erf!") Yes, there are lots of old people here. But space to push my cart+ reasonable prices trump geriatrics and mean-spirited checkout girls. The end. read more

I'd like to break this review down into two components: catering and general shopping experience. Catering: Love them. For a recent outdoor picnic event, I needed to find a place that could fulfill an order in a matter of days (because with weather conditions, we may have had to go with an indoor plan B), and offered all the fixings for sandwiches, without actually pre-building the sandwiches. Have you ever been to an event where you're stuck with tons of one kind of sandwich because no one wants it, or people unable to eat or picking out ingredients they don't want? I wanted to avoid that. Unlike some other stores in the area I checked, Morton Williams provided a clear catering list with estimates on how much it would feed along up front pricing that was reasonable, especially when compared to traditional caterers. I was then able to work with the deli department management to get some items that were specific to my needs. Shredded lettuce and beautiful slices of tomato to go with those artfully arranged cold cut platters? They do that, just ask. Need your rolls pre sliced? They do it too- actually, they offered it! I also needed some sparking juice (in those super nifty champagne looking bottles), gluten free bread, dairy free cheese and other things - all you need to do is roam the aisles of the store before you make your catering order and tell them what you need - if they have it, you'll get it. Without having to put in a separate order or deal with multiple folks, I also ordered dessert trays of cookies and fresh fruit platters for the guests. One of the things I like is that there is a bakery right in house with a lovely display, so I knew the guests would be blown away by the tray we received. The cookies tasted like something out of childhood (makes me sad I'm not supposed to eat them!), and although they were out of macarons at the time of my order, the manager was kind enough to provide prepackaged gluten/dairy free lemon meringues (which I will need to pick up again!) and coconut macaroons (and yes, they knew the difference between a macaron/French macaroon and a coconut macaroon; just make sure you specify). All this and they managed to assemble this order super fresh the morning of to deliver it to me at 9:30 am so I could transport it to the event site. The guests were very impressed, and the portions were, to my relief, large enough that many came up for seconds. I will definitely consider them for future events, and I hope that others will check out this seemingly hidden catering gem. Shopping: Good. I pop in there usually after visits to the NYU dental school as they are very convenient. They have a good selection of natural and organic products, so I can skip the extra trip to Whole Foods or other organic grocers. I will agree with other reviewers that the layout to find things is sometimes a bit odd (I had to describe where to find the non-dairy cheese to someone who works there), but it's not a biggie to me, as every store has a unique layout. Checkout staff are ok - typical for NYC stores in my experience. Tips: Morton Williams locations have a 10 block delivery radius. Know before you go - my only less than stellar experience had to do with finding the restroom in an emergency. You have to ask for the location, the door is an unmarked one in the bakery area which could have been an entrance to anything. I didn't want to walk in to the wrong place, so I knocked a few times, didn't hear anything, but could not open the door, backtracked and double checked. The staffer that came out of the mystery door which turned out to be the bathroom yelled at me as if I was on a mission to ruin his day. On the whole though, I'd say this is a very nice grocery store stocked with all the essentials, with the added benefit of a lovely bakery and deli. read more

I only do my grocery shopping here because it is the closest supermarket to me. Trust me, if I did not have to I wouldn't. Well, I do do a good deal of my food shopping at Whole Foods but it is not always convenient. The people who work the registers are usually pretty rude with the exception of tonight. The girl was actually very nice - SURPRISED MUCH???? YES! Their produce is kinda sucky and it is way overpriced. I usually buy produce from the guy on the street which is super cheap and I think is actually better quality then the associated crap. I don't think it matters what you buy from here - you should ALWAYS check the dates on anything that has a "fresh until" date on it. Many times the prices are screwed up because the stockers don't give a crap. They have put the wrong price on something, notice it, and go, "oh well". I have had to now tell the cashier twice that the same two items in my hands had different prices on them. There are also a lot of elderly people that shop at this supermarket which while it can get annoying you just have to be patient. Unfortunately the cashiers who are all women are usually pretty rude to them and they do not comprehend the idea of having patience. I just think this place overall sucks the big one. I live directly across the street and when we first moved in were thrilled to be so close to a major grocery store. Now, i consider this place my nemesis. Only in desperate times do I muster the courage to cross the street to enter this store - I'd rather walk across town to go to a friendlier, albeit much less convenient place to get my groceries. Don't bother asking anyone who works there where anything might be. You will get death stares. You can just assume that your cashier will be having a rude conversation with a friend or another cashier and barely acknowledge your existence except to ask, "cash or credit?". Three stars for their (relatively for New York City) decent produce section and overall selection. Minus one for their employees and service. read more

I'm not sure why Morton Williams gets such a bad rap on Twitter. Perhaps people only review a non-hip grocery store when they've had a negative experience. Fact is, this is the most reasonably priced grocery store for those living in the area (cheaper than Gristede's, and waaaaayyy cheaper than D'Agostino's), and is a great go-to for the thrifty in Kips Bay who are unwilling to make it all the way to Trader Joe's. It's also good for staples, like oil, sugar, salt, and spices, which will definitely be cheaper here than at TJ's or (I suppose it goes without saying) Whole Foods. There's a pretty good selection here, though the layout is a bit bizarre (there's a large separate section in front of you and to the left when you enter the store with bread, dairy products, baked goods, juice, etc.). Lots of generic products for sale, which are a great way to save money. A really good selection of frozen vegetables - better than you'll find at Gristede's. I haven't had any major concerns with the employees, though no really amazing interactions with them either.... so if you want to chat with your cashier about how good the stuff you're buying is, head to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods =) I don't make it here much, but it's great for reasonably-priced staples (oil, sugar, salt and the like) and regular grocery runs when you're not seeking artisanal/specialty/gourmet items read more

I shop here when I just need a few things. The place is not cheap, though I think it's a bit cheaper than the Gristedes that's at 28th and 2nd Ave. I wouldn't call this place clean, but it's not horrible either. Everyone seems to hate the cashiers, but I actually think they've been neutral to borderline friendly in my many visits. I got food from the food market thing attached to the grocery store once for lunch. It was actually pretty good. For $5 I got a huge pulled pork sandwich, roasted potatoes and a soda. Best of all, the guy working the food counter was super friendly and nice. This experience was way better than any at the grocery store. Some things are the same price as Trader Joe's or Fairway, others are significantly more expensive. But, when I need some flour, canned Goya products, or one ingredient missing from a recipe, this is a great place to go. Also, there are no crowds here. Really only worth it if you are in a pinch for some groceries. Some other reviewers say stay away from the "fresh" produce and that this place is marginally better than Gristede's, and I concur. Normally I would say frozen goods are okay to purchase from this place, however after buying two pints of Talenti Gelato that were on sale and finding that the texture of both were gritty, it's a sign that the gelato was not properly stored. The gritty texture points to the gelato being frozen, defrosted, and then refrozen again. Improper handling in the back and/or poorly working freezers are to blame here. If these guys can't maintain their freezers and carry ice cream on the shelf properly, what more for the fresh goods? It's worth your time and effort to walk to Fairway in Kip's Bay, even in the cold. read more

Believe it or not, this supermarket, as it stands today, is a vast improvement over what it was in the 90s. That's not saying much. Prices are high. Selection is limited. Most of the employees are surly:, this is a trait dating back decades, though a few are kind. Most of the sales are on store brand items. I agree with the other reviewers that the cashiers here are rude and annoying. The girl I had today was busy refilling the plastic bag holder - which was overloaded with bags - rather than helping me. She didn't look at me or talk to me at all until I swiped my card. "How you paying?" she asked. "Credit" I responded. She hit a button on the machine, then slowly turned to me and asked "Credit?" I think she was stoned. I then had to ask her not to pack each bag with only two items, and she looked at me like I was annoying her. Hello? I don't need my seven items in five different bags. This is the closest thing to a West Coast style supermarket that I've experienced in the city. This location has a pretty decent selection of upscale grocery items. Slightly overpriced, but you can get what you need for a fancy dinner party. I also hear that they have King's Hawaiian bread here, but I've not been able to confirm this. okay, this place is disgusting. so many of their products are spoiled, rotten, or crawling with maggots (i kid you not). their shelf items are sometimes covered with dust. Their fresh produce have an interesting smell of near rotting and look like they've been sitting out in the sun for a day. the only thing they've got going for them is their prices. everything is very affordable for being in the middle of manhattan. were it not for that, i suspect it would have gone out of business long ago. i hear it's better now that's it has been renovated, but i don't go there anymore so i can't say. I am so delighted. This is the first time I've used Morton William's on-line shopping/delivery service. My husband and I are seniors and are staying at home during this pandemic. On-line ordering is super simple and you can request another preference if the item you are ordering is out of stock. It took a few days which is certainly understandable during such a distressing time. The order showed up today, delivered by a lovely young man right to the door. COUNT YOUR CHANGE...BETTER STILL ASK THE CASHIER TO COUNT IT FOR YOU OUT LOUD. Five Dollars were stolen from me by Jorge, an adept slight-of-hand cashier today. All I had was a coupon and a FIFTY DOLLAR bill so there is no possibility of a mistake on my part here. I was chatted up by Jorge the cashier who handed me 43.01 instead of 47.01 substituting a single for a Five in a neat little stack with the receipt on top, and who immediately began ringing up the next person before I could secure my package. When I found myself FIVE DOLLARS SHORT thought it an honest mistake BUT when the woman who had answered the phone asked me to call back once Jorge has cashed out at precisely 9:50pm and I did...only to be told his drawer was fine....I knew my only recourse was to warn other older people like me to be vigilant. It's a supermarket, but compared to others I've seen, it's quite large. There's a large hot/cold buffet and a pretty solid deli counter. The items on the shelf are standard, so don't come here looking for any organic hummus or whatnot. No complaints about the staff, who I saw helping an old man place his groceries on a wheel chair and who helped me at the deli counter. However, I did run into the stale food issue, as I popped open a plastic tin of veggies and an entire apartment smelled of fart for over an hour after. This place is strange to me. Inside, there's four different counters, one's for pizza, another for burgers, another for sweets and the last for coffee. I decided I'd get a burger, and the guy told me (with an attitude) to pay at the coffee counter. It's strange, because his counter did have a cash register. Anyways, after I got the burger ordered, he told me to take a seat because it'll take a few minutes to make it. As I walked towards a table, I heard him mutter "son of a bitch", though I wasn't sure whether or not that was directed towards me or something else. So, waited about ten minutes, burger's done, he was friendlier then - "there's the napkins, here's a bottle of ketchup, just take it to your table". I'm eating the burger (and it's a good, filling burger for $5) and he starts berating another employee just feet away from me. After I was done, I walked back to the counter to return the ketchup, and he had this big smile on his face and asked how the burger was. I said "Good, thanks" and left. I have six theories on this experience: A. I was drunk B. He was drunk C. I was high D. He was high E. He has extreme mood swings F. He has an evil twin Right now, I'm convinced it's a combination of C and E. Or maybe he just had that big smile on at the end because he spitted/spat/sput/whatever in my burger. This has got to be one of the worst grocery shopping store in New York City... I give it MINUS 10 stars... yes.. MINUS TEN STARS. Where do I begin? 1) I saw mice crawling behind the bread section, and then scurry away. 2) I had to alert them their entire freezer section was on HEAT and not FREEZE. 3) They consistently always run out of anything I usually buy and don't replace it sometimes for months... They claim they are at the mercy of whatever their supplier delivers. What kind of crap it that? 4) Since I live closest to this place, and subject to the inhumane torture of their rude day to day cashiers... 5) 90 percent of the time they ring up your items HIGHER and cheat you on your bill. You have to catch them, and then they blame the computer, saying, "It not me, it's the computer." I have the mind to report them to the better business bureau. 6) Produce is lame 7) Can never find all that I need here... 8) The Old peeps in the store.. leaving their shopping carts always smack in the middle of the aisles is driving me mad!!! They are in a cosmos daze, squinting at prices and cans for years... totally oblivious to anyone else actually "living" in this world too. Need I lecture them? My only alternative is to exercise the patience of saint. I should have been awarded the Nobel Peace prize for my patience already at least 40,000 times. 9) The 8 items or less "cashier lady" cannot count and lectures you rudely even before you get up to being next on line. I have then to RUDELY count back to her the items and show her she's being a total ass, and in fact my items are LESS THAN EIGHT. 10) They suck!!! And even if you point everything out to them.. the management just shirks.. and does nothing to fix the problems.. oh except the mice... I think they took my advice and got an exterminator. 11) Almost everything is near expiration date.. you have to read it or risk dying of botulism. All IMO. read more

I have been shopping at the Park Avenue "branch" of the 23rd Street Moron Wiliams for almost 30 years and can honestly say off it was not open 24 hours or not so close b.y that I would shop almost anyplace other than there. They have me on convenience and convenience only. I have watched the prices creep, climb and soar far above those in any other store. (Both Park Avenue and 23rd Street). If there was some fabulous produce, deli or butcher section I might put up with it since I fully understand we need to pay more to have the perishables kept fresh. However, they have the most pedestrian selections in all those departments and do not even have decent produce at the height of summer..pale tomatoes, corn that looks like it was picked over a week ago and hard tasteless stone fruits. No one makes any effort. AND despite the fact they claim they are a high turnover store. (See comment by Avi) I suggest the real turning over should be done by consumers turning over the cans and checking the expiration dates....coffee two years past it's date and more, It is dangerous. Again and again, they have shown me how little they actually care. I care to take my business elsewhere whenever possible and now I do. They fail at even getting the basics right. Despite the bad reviews i decided to give this place a try because its close to me....big mistake. The prices are a little bit higher than most and there is absolutely no customer service or people to help you. When I finally found someone to ask a question she was too busy complaining about her job to her boyfriend. I interrupted them and asked her where the stuffing was and she simply replied "good luck trying to find it". What kind of answer is that??? Also the checkout is very weird I don't know how to explain it but you have to like walk behind the cashier to swipe your card and there is no where to sign the receipt so you have to awkwardly sign it in your hand. not the biggest problem but just adds to the annoyance of it all. Most people likely go to the nearest supermarket for goods they can't get (or bother to get) at the green/farmer's markets, but just in case anyone actually uses yelp to decide, this supermarket has a decent selection of Morningstar Farms vegetarian frozen foods and several brands of vegetarian deli slices and hot dogs. They also have an excellent beer selection, truly, but they unfortunately shelve the beers horribly wrong, displaying the best bottled beers on the top shelf right under the lights, where no one, and I mean NO ONE who knows anything about beer will buy them after all the heat and light damage. I'd avoid the produce, usually...and the bread. All else is standard. The manager is very friendly and helpful, but keep your eyes on the register clerks; those girls can be pleasant or cold, but either way they ring up just about everything incorrectly and/or forget what they've scanned 1/10 times. read more

I only go to Morton Williams when it's a necessity. I live around the corner so this location is convenient. this "super"market, not including the cafe, is as big as the Bodega in brooklyn or the Bronx. Surprisingly they still have many varieties of products and a good selection of fresh vegetables. Every other week I play Milk roulette. One week I'll get a half gallon of milk that I will finish or won't expire until after the sell by date and another week my milk will go bad by the 3rd day. I don't trust the dairy section much after that experience. They are usually stocked with ice cream and french fries. Häagen-Dazs, Breyer's, Talenti, Ben & Jerry's. The lines move fairly quickly and they are always calling someone to a register when the line does grow passed 3 people. Mostly younger kids at the register so you may get a smile and a hello but they are looking to move you out of the store as fast as possible, that's ok with me! read more

This is the closest grocery store to my home but I'll only shop there for items that are canned or packaged. Too many negative experiences with moldy cheese (with dates indicating it should still be good for another week or more), prepared food that's gone bad, dairy on the shelves with almost expired dates, etc. The food just isn't fresh and with so many better choices just a little further away (Fairway, Trader Joe's), there's no reason to shop here. read more

This is the closest/largest supermarket to me ergo my favorite. I also think this has the largest selection of everything in comparison to another Associated near me and a couple of D'agostino's. I will probably go here for all of my food except veggies and fruits (and bread?) which I'll get at the union sq. greenmarket. And if I ever have a dire craving for cereal I will go to CVS or Kmart.
