If you look through my profile, you'll see me lamenting the hit and (mostly) miss options of Southern California supermarkets. And I knew visiting NYC, I'd be experiencing the opposite: the little neighborhood grocery store. Oh man, was I impressed with this store. Every inch of this place is smartly used, and they have EVERYTHING you'd need. Not only that, but you're not limited in selection: the top floor has so many options for grab and go items, I could never make up my mind. By the end of my trip I was here each day at least once. Helpful service ready to get you out without wait, too. Their fresh food items I had were all good, including fantastic blueberry muffins. No, it's no "supermarket" but as places of this ilk go, it's without peer. Put one of these out here in LA! You'd use half the space of a Trader Joe's, get out faster, and everyone would be happy... read more

Most reviewers seem to stop for the deli / prepared foods, which I haven't tried - this is re the groceries. Plus for the convenience of the location, selection, and 24-7 hours. I get a lot of the generic stuff Whole Foods doesn't carry like peanut butters and cereals. However, it should probably have $$$ because some stuff is quite expensive ($5+ for canned Bumble Bee Tuna??). And some cashiers, like Angelina, won't bag your stuff if you bring in your own reusable bag. And I didn't come in looking like a haggard cat lady or anything. Maybe management should filter who works the cashier - so much for being green. read more

It was nice to find a grocery store in the middle of our walk around new york. We were able to grab some snacks and drinks and continue on our way. The food here looked really good, but unfortunately we were not able to get any. The store itself is clean and there are plenty of things to choose from. I stopped by for lunch, they have construction inside. The food was great but at the checkout line was not the same. The cashier customer service skills was just awful. The cashier asked if i wanted a bag which i replied yes pls and she didn't hear me, so after i paid i asked her for the bag and she pretty much yelled at me and said I didn't ask for one. So she asked for my receipt to make sure she didn't charge me for the bag. Which she didn't so i paid for it and she kept talking which I really wasn't about to start arguing with her so i just kept quiet. The service needs to improve, and if the place is going to hire employees with no customer service skills they needs to be trained properly.. unfortunately i will not be stopping by again... read more

Kinda snobby for my taste in bodegas but "when in Rome..". The selection is very diverse and extensive. Plenty of vegan and all natural products. I visited early like 630a and just grabbed an Fiji apple and organic coconut water for a quick light breakfast. No complaints read more

It's a crazy and somewhat enlightening thing when you compare most supermarket/grocery stores in midtown Manhattan compared to those of uptown and/or the outer boroughs. Morton Williams is very clean and usually has workers at the register for cash out with very little wait time on line. Compare that to a super grocery store like a Pathmark in Brooklyn or uptown where only about 2-3 registers are open and the lines are about 20 minutes longs. I usually go to Morton Williams for some slices of cake because their cakes are just so damn good and AFFORDABLE. But recently started coming here for their hot dishes during lunch as well. Their salmon is very good and different rices are good as well. Wasn't too fond of their salad though. I don't know if it was just the day I had it or that they don't clean their salads that well but I almost threw up from it. Being that it was only a one time occasion I am giving them a pass on that. Other than that Morton William's is a very good place to pick up groceries and for lunch dining with 2 floors for shopping and eatery. read more

A nice market in manhattan! I found this great little shop while wandering new york one morning, while my family slept. Although prices were steep, no more so than other similar places. This location- 140 w 57th st, 6 1/2 ave- was clean, quaint and had a bit of everything! The staff was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. This will have to be one of the most organized and clean supermarkets I've come across in town. Definitely great selection of everything you'd expect in a supermarket/Deli. If I would live in the neighborhood this would be my go to place. Also for out-of-Town visitors a good place to find fruit salads, sandwiches and whatnot. This is an update to my earlier review. Quick summary of that one: I had a disturbingly bad customer service experience and wrote about it, but included in that review that I usually have a perfectly acceptable experience - nothing to write about (literally - no big complaints, no big compliments). I'm writing this update because the business responded to my first review and suggested I emphasize the positive encounters with the "exceptional" staff. I believe this is a very fair point to be made by the business so I decided to visit ten more times and write an update. I try to always be fair and, equally important, helpful to the businesses I patronize. I consider it a collaboration. I ran a little experiment: ten visits, two encounters each visit, after my last review. Over the past few years, I've noticed that if I approach an employee and smile, say hello, ask them how they are, and then ask a question, they are receptive, generally pleasant, and helpful. However, if I approach a staff member and just say hi, they don't initiate a greeting, ask me if they can help me, ask me if I'm looking for something, etc. In the twenty interactions in my "test,' ten times I did the work and nine times they responded positively; then ten times I said hello and waited for them to say anything, and ten times I was left hanging until I followed up. My conclusion? This is not unusual for NY, although I have had the opposite experience at stores nearby - Fresh & Co greets you immediately, Whole Foods asks if you need help, etc - but I reiterate that I never had any reason to complain about this level of customer service; it is just what I expect at Morton Williams at this location. It is neither good nor bad; I'm not offended, I'm happy to initiate the interaction and do the work, and when I chat with the employees during the transaction (particularly the cashiers) they are quite nice. But this does not qualify as "exceptional" by any standards. Perhaps it is a matter of training, since the staff appear to have the capacity for strong customer service interactions. Morton Williams needn't change anything; I wouldn't have written a review in either direction if not for the one unusual bad experience. But if the goal is exceptional staff reviews, then I suggest some additional training. read more

Just dropped in town for a few days, and wanted a late night nosh. Got here before the hot bar closed at 8:30pm. Some good food was available, plus other pick up and go items. Beers, hard cider, minimal wines- but still good quality available for NYC. Grocery selection with fresh food is great, and international food section downstairs was pretty good. Definitely will no longer shop here. I work (and go to school) near 57th Street, so I like to stop by on my way home. However, I am no longer of a fan of this store. I wanted to buy food & desserts for my job's potluck party, but the security guard named Stanly FOLLOWED ME AROUND THE STORE, making me feel extremely uncomfortable. I'm a slow shopper and I like to look around and read labels, but I guess he saw this as a reason to single me out. It's very unnerving when someone is following your every move, so I didn't even purchase the items I wanted to buy. When I was in the meat section, Stanley, the security guard came near me and started "organizing" the meat. Who knew that was in a security guard's job description? This continued in every aisle I went in. I just purchased the three items I had in my hand (although I intended to purchase a lot more) and I asked to speak with the manager (Eddie) so I could explain what happened. He and the cashier where very sympathetic. I didn't finish taking the stuff out the basket (because I was talking to Eddie) and Stanley came by and took the basket WITH the items that I wanted to buy. This was bizarre, because the cashier wasn't even finished ringing me up! I honestly liked the store a lot. I frequently shopped at this location (and the one on 9th avenue). However, this incident makes me not want to shop there anymore. I will ask that my friends, family and co workers not shop here either. I understand a security guard's job is to prevent theft, but there's a way to do without making a customer feel uncomfortable. I'll stick to Whole Foods @ Columbus Circle, and the 72nd street Trader Joe's from now. read more

I frequent this supermarket on the regular. It's also open 24 hours A two floor supermarket that has all sections you'd expect to find in a modern day supermarket. Fresh fruit/vegetables, deli, sushi, bakery, cheese, beer, canned goods, etc. They also offer a small variety of Kosher meats and have an "international" aisle in the basement with different types of items you'd find in various countries. Pricing: yes...this place is expensive but bear in mind it's location. Everything around here is expensive. read more

I used to come here a lot when I was in college and returned two years after to a horrible experience. The lady at the cashier was giving me so much attitude I'm still laughing at it right now. I don't mind if you don't love your job but don't be mad at customers for no reason. I was literally getting yelled at just because I left my card 0.5 sec longer after the card reader prompted me to remove my card. This is 100% one of the most overpriced grocery stores in the city. Not only that, they are taking advantage of the COVID19 pandemic. I purchased 12 rolls of toilet paper and they charged me $27! If your staying in one of the hotels, I can't recommend Morton Williams enough. An awful meal in this area is at least 30$. A hamburger is 20$. MW has an awesome hot bar at only 8.99$ a pound. Overall it's pretty good quality. I've even eaten a decent steak from the hot bar. It's very easy to make a healthful meal. Just be warned, you have to walk trough their supper delicious looking bakery to get any where in the store. It can be very hard to resist a cookie or piece of cake. read more

Bought several items that have been expired or bad. I recently was sick and realized that the watermelon water I had was recently recalled and the likely source. The response below shows that they clearly have the lack of understanding of the products that they carry. They do carry the brand Watermelon Water like many other stores in the area. Just because you don't make the product doesn't mean that you don't have a responsibility to the consumer not to carry recalled items that contain plastic; however, they did. I do not believe they look at recall list of their products or expiration dates, because I've bought stuff that is expired in the past and thought it was a one off, but now I think otherwise. What if it was a salmonella or ecoli recall- would it be the customers fault too? read more

Completely insane got a chicken salad ready made sandwich and when I bit into it it was shrimp salad! What if I had had a shellfish allergy! To top it off it was disgusting. Really horrible. UPDATE Every time I tried to go back to contact the manager the staff said he wasn't present! Go figure. Maybe if he was around to supervise his staff, they wouldn't been running amok putting shrimp salad in chicken sandwiches. Why would Morton Williams write back to my review? Just for show? I got a message through yelp to call a number... got patched through to the owner by his receptionist and he let it ring for over three minutes so I hung up. I just went to buy some toilet paper at Morton Williams on 1st between 56th & 57th Street. Charmin 18 mega rolls and they charged 40 dollars for this. The price was not on the item nor listed any where nearby. On average, this is usually under 20 dollars at Walmart, Target, and Duane Reade. Shame on them for charging this much. As soon as I got home and saw the price on the receipt I immediately returned it. The staff (who don't determine prices) were great and accepted the return without issues. read more

This is a pretty good grocery store that I go to when I don't have enough time to make the trek to Trader Joes. Any basic item you can think of will be there; if you want something more unique (I was once looking for wheat berries there), they may not have it, which is fine because it does not advertise itself as a speciality grocery store. Recently bought some onions on sale. Register charged double the price. I noticed the receipt when home. I came back and at another register stated my overprice. Cashier weighed the onions and now they weighed 6 ounce more than when weighed at first. My refund would be just some pennies. I returned the whole batcg. Sale prices not reflected on the cash register and in favor of the store are common in my experience. Shameful.And they accept food stamps thus cheating the poorer customer when the register is in favor of the store. read more

I came to New York on Vacation with my family. When we tried to go to get groceries at different stores we found out that there was nothing for quick meals. Then we found Morton Williams. This place had a great deli, bakery, and salad bar. I would highly recommend this store for quick meals, great food, and services. The Rent Is Too Damn High, it must be because since they moved from there old location on 57th. west of this location, the prices really went up. This location is larger and also on two floors. Some of it doesn't make sense, for instance why is there yogurt on both floors? The main level has a small selection, downstairs has the larger selection, I guess it's so someone can pick one out and go? Layout is all a bit weird, also odd is yet with the expanded space they have narrow aisles just like the other one I use to go to. The produce looks wonderful just as it did at the other one and the cut up ready made fruit is just at the peak of ripeness and such a good option if you're lucky to have a small refrigerator in your hotel room, some fruit and a yogurt and you can skip the pricey NYC breakfast. I'll come here for the fruit, but I'll skip picking up some of the other stuff I need. The place where we stay has a mini kitchen, so I get other things to make lunch or a light snack. However, I don't have plans to take out a second mortgage for what I need. Don't get me wrong, it's all very good, but it's also a pricier option than what it used to be. read more

I like this new location much better than the old one. The place has always been very clean (though this may be because I only come here early in the morning on my way to work) so much so that you can smell the cleaning solution when you pass by the store. It's overpriced, and more so than most Manhattan supermarkets. I can't imagine living in this neighborhood and having to do all my marketing here. I'd be broke. They have a whole aisle downstairs of international foods, which I think is really neat since I'm obsessed with a particular brand of cookies from the UK. read more

I'm in NYC for a week-long conference and decided that I would rent a studio apartment instead of a hotel room and save money on dining out three times a day. I found the store on YELP and stopped in to do some light grocery shopping. The selection of prepared food and groceries is enormous, although relatively light on the groceries and heavier on the gourmet. It's extremely clean and it was crowded around the 5 o'clock hour. I can say that if you're in the same situation as I am, you'll probably experience some sticker shock. Not a lot of brand names that you'd find in a supermarket....and the prices are either double or triple what you'd expect. So....great selection, clean and inviting displays, gourmet and prepared food...but with a price tag to go with it. I probably could have eaten three or four restaurant meals for the day or two of groceries I purchased. BUT the variety is pretty endless if you have a kitchenette and a microwave. read more

Morton Williams moved a few months ago and they are now right next to Le Parker Meridien, our "home away from home" when we're in the city. This made me so happy! Not that traveling a couple blocks out of the way was a big deal, but is is now ridiculously easy to stock up on food with MW right next to us. The new location is nice, well laid-out and the checkers, while not necessarily overtly friendly, are at least helpful overall. They always have a great deli selection, as well as fresh fruits and veggies. read more
