I don't come to this part of town often, but I'm glad I did! We were a group of six that had a very lovely time at Mosaic. The person who picked this restaurant was hoping for healthier options and was very happy with the selections they offered here. Towards the end of the night, service got slower (like when checks were coming) but besides that our visit here was great! I loved our waiter. He was so funny and charismatic. He was very patient with our group too. I was also flattered by a very kind waitress when she told me how cute my shoes were. Everyone loved what they got. My boyfriend devoured his charleston chicken roller wrap. I liked a majority of what I had: Pierre Sparr, Riesling: Floral with citrus and peach notes. This wine complimented the salmon in my dish. Crispy Artichokes: We shared this at the table. I wasn't the biggest fan. The actual artichokes were a bit dry for me. The basil-buttermilk fried parts were reminiscent of fried chicken batter. Keto Salmon Shirataki Noodle Bowl: WHOA! I loved this dish. The salmon was cooked just right and had a lot of nice fatty pieces. My favorite part was the miso-ginger dressing. So tasty! The textures of the noodles and mushrooms were fun. I would go back for this dish. Ooey Gooey Butter Cake: Cake is always a good idea. Butter cake? The best idea. This place is known for their butter cake. I knew about their butter cake before I even knew what kind of restaurant this was. My best Yelp Elite friend would get us take out butter cake from here all the time (it's soo good). And yes, I got it on this visit. I think one of the best parts was that Bob Ross was playing on a TV in the background. It's a nice restaurant with pretty good food. I'm excited to try brunch here sometime. read more

Everything about our holiday dinner was horrible. Waited over 45 minutes for a reservation we made months in advance. Walked into a restaurant that clearly took more than they could handle. No real host to talk to and the one who would randomly appear every 20 minutes was extremely rude. When we finally did get to sit down and eat, the food took longer than our wait for the reservation. A majority of our foods table was cold or sloppily thrown together. Asked to speak to a manager about our experience and was told there was not one currently available. Our server was overwhelmed and gave bad service but looking at how much they had it would have been very tough for them to do so. Went to Mosaic specifically because we heard about their fun Christmas decorations. The food was delicious! I was considering recommending them to many people due to the ambiance and delicious food...until we were rushed out by a member of the staff and told that there was a reservation waiting on our specific table. We went ahead and got up, and as we walked to the bathroom before leaving, we noticed 3 empty, unbussed 4 top tables. Also, the two tables near us who were there before us were still sitting there chatting. Not a very good ending to the great night we were having. We were looking forward to this experience and were disappointed -- even hired a driving to take us there from the hotel. There was no AC or air conditioning. The service was no from experienced wait staff so it lacked basic skills for managing clearly communicated allergies ahead of time. Since they could not accommodate properly we left so I can't comment on the food. We visited this restaurant on a weekday for lunch. The food incredible. We started off with the tangy cauliflower. (See pic) I had the chicken wrap sandwich, which was very fresh, right amount of spice & slightly creamy. My guest had one the salads. Service was excellent. I love Mosaic. I've never had a bad meal there and the service is always great. We went New Year's Eve so this is not the usual menu. The first course was soup, it was the only downside for me, my lobster was overcooked and not super fresh but no one else had that complaint. I had the oyster trio and it was so good I wish I could have ordered ten trios. One was fried with candied bacon and chive crème fraiche, another raw with horseradish and champagne mignonette and the last Rockefeller style with absinthe aioli. My boyfriend had the pork belly. It was good but I rarely eat pork so not really my thing. He loved it though. My mom had the salad. We all had the filets for dinner, it's a toss up between which was better, the filet and all the sides or the oysters, so good. We all had olive oil cake for dessert, another hit although I did miss the butter cake they usually have. read more

Anna was wonderful and deserves 10 stars for her professionalism and caring attitude. The restaurant was strangely empty. We were unfortunately seated beside loud patrons and had difficulty with our own conversation at our tiny table for 2. Aside from that, our food was very Mosaic in taste and presentation. We are very sad to see the "Big Mosaic Breakfast" gone from the brunch menu. We look forward to see this item returned to the menu. I've dined at this restaurant twice, and the second time, I was highly disappointed. I went to celebrate two of my co-workers' birthdays. I brought a cake for the occasion and placed it on our table. As our food was about to be served, the hostess kindly offered to store the cake in their refrigerator to make more room on the table. She assured us that we could have the cake back after our meal and that she would provide extra plates and silverware so that we could enjoy it. After finishing our meal, we asked for the cake, and that's when the waiter informed us that we couldn't eat our own cake in their restaurant because they sell cake themselves. I was shocked and frustrated as this policy wasn't communicated to us when we arrived. The hostess was also confused and mentioned that bringing in cakes was common and allowed. Furthermore, when I visited the restaurant in the past, I witnessed another table celebrating a birthday with a cake they had brought in (hence, how I got the idea). However, we were not allowed to eat ours. Not being able to enjoy our cake significantly dampened our celebration! If this is their policy, I respect that. However, I felt like the restaurant intentionally did not disclose their policy upfront when they saw me bring in the cake because they knew we would have gone to another restaurant. They were more concerned about their profits than our celebration. As a result, I would never return to this restaurant and would not recommend it to others. read more

Nearly 8 years since my last review, so I thought it was time for an update. Stopped in yesterday and shared the smoked gouda dip with a friend. Delicious! I couldn't stop eating it! The chips that came with it were a little sweet, which was unexpected. Almost like a graham cracker. Got the sesame ginger salad with chicken, and that was an unexpectedly satisfying meal! The dressing took it well over the top. Finger licking good! I ate every single bite. While low on ambiance, Mosaic is always a solid choice food-wise. I've never been disappointed. read more

Ordered the Buddha Bowl and it was unbelievably delicious. I am a picky eater and usually have to ask for them to leave out ingredients but this was perfect. Where do I even begin. This is my first time ever writing a review and it was definitely needed. For starters when we tried to call to confirm our reservation we were very surprised by how rude one of the hosts was and ultimately very unhelpful. With a reservation we were then placed on hold because there was another customer that had a question that was apparently more important than ours. We would still go and with our 6:30 reservation we got our food around 8:15. After finally getting our food they seemed very unapologetic and we were then offered a free desert but decided we did not want to be there until 10 o'clock so we got 2 dollars off of our bread that was stale. I saw a photo of their mimosa flights on social media, so I had to try them out. I got the mimosa flight and crab cake on brioche while my friend got the shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits were overly salted, but the crab cake was pretty good. My friend and I also got the beignets which were overfried. Overall the experience was great and the service was efficient and friendly but the food was just alright. I'd go back just for the mimosa flights though! read more

Very disappointing! Made reservations online for Valentine's Day several weeks in advance. When we arrived, we were informed by the hostess that the only meal to be served would be the Valentine's Day special, which was $75 per person. One of the hostesses said that they had called everybody and left voicemails about the menu. I informed her that nobody had tried to contact us, although we did receive at least three text messages to confirm our reservation. That would have been an ideal to inform folks about the menu. As we had invited another couple to join us, we waited to see if perhaps they were aware of the menu. Of course not! We then told the hostess that we weren't planning on eating there. I can understand a fixed menu and also the cost, but to not inform the patrons of this decision is very poor form. They have lost two couples as patrons. read more

How have I never reviewed Mosaic? This is a favorite spot for brunch, lunch, and dinner among friends and family, and in eight years I've never had a disappointing meal. Right across River Road from the University of Richmond campus, Mosaic located in a small shopping center with other restaurants and a few shops. There is a large parking lot and there are no steps to navigate, so it's easily wheelchair accessible. They have a partially shaded outdoor patio with wrought iron chairs and tables with umbrellas, which is perfect for brunch on a nice day. Inside the restaurant is lovely a tasteful, with soft lighting, cushioned booths, and a glossy bar. The service is always warm and efficient and you never feel rushed even at busy times. The menu is balanced between creative, healthy options (no boring salads!) and high quality Southern comfort food. Some of my favorite items include: Bicycle spring rolls, seasonal flatbread, mini crabcakes, Fit chicken, seared salmon, Charleston chicken roller, shrimp and grits, Mosaic mac and cheese, and the spinach salad. It's all delicious and reasonably priced. They also have an excellent drink selection, including local craft beers, Virginia wines, and mimosa flights. read more

The inviting outdoor area reminded me of the building decor in Western Europe, inside ambiance and seating was beautiful. We were seated right away all good so far. Sat dwn n waited patiently for our server. Seemed to take awhile . Three in our party chose the mimosa flights. Mosaic was out of flight glasses, but our waiter solved it by serving the flight in larger glasses. After he complained to staff that he wasn't doing that again. We had to wave for everything after that. From being ready to order main course to the check and he seemed irritated no matter how polite we were to him.
