This Taiwanese restaurant has ample seating inside and a decent variety of Taiwanese food on its menu. There were a lot of empty tables when we went, and we were able to get seated rather quickly for a walk-in. My girlfriend (who is Taiwanese) and I shared a few different menu items. T. Roots doesn't have the best Taiwanese food, but it's okay. The soup dumplings were not good, so I wouldn't recommend those. The dumpling skins were too thick and the flavor was off. The wonton soup was better but also quite bland, and the bok choy was a bit undercooked. I asked for less sugar in my Peach Oolong Milk Tea, but it still tasted too sweet. The oyster omelettes were the most disappointing though. There was barely any oyster in it. There were literally only 4 pieces of oyster, so 2 per person. Mostly flour. My favorite dish was probably the bao buns (I think they called it burgers on the menu). The pork belly was tender and delicious! Service was slow in the second half of our visit and we had to leave so we asked for dessert to go. The mantou was yummy! I would definitely recommend the mantou; it's authentic. read more

We were in Northampton on graduation weekend, and had difficulty getting into good restaurants, so had to settle for this one, upon recommendation from our daughter's non-Asian professor. No trouble getting seated. One puts down order at the downstairs counter, pays for it, and waits at one's table. Service was definitely fast and efficient. We were a party of 4 - 2 herbivores and 2 carnivores. The rice paper vegetable roll was the best tasting out of all the dishes we ordered. Scallion pancake with vegetable wrap was innovative but a bit dry. Spicy Tofu salad was very salty, and the vegetable tofu curry was quite bland. Report about the beef noodle and shrimp fried rice was also just adequate. I guess we were just happy that we didn't go hungry that night :-). read more

I've eaten here at least 50 times. I love the food. But sometimes I wonder if they understand they're in the hospitality business. Yesterday we arrived for lunch at 1:55pm. Lunch hours are posted on the door - 11:30am to 2:30pm. There were empty tables. They turned us away. "We're closing soon." Good grief! When a place closes at 2:30pm, doesn't that mean you seat people right up until 2:30pm? Do not hesitate to eat here. The food is very good. I've mostly had good service. Honestly was pretty impressed that there was even a Taiwanese place in Northampton so had to try it out! Came on a weekday lunch and had to wait a bit before there was any table space as the place was packed. I ordered the Beef Noodle Soup and I thought it was okay. The soup felt like it was more soy-sauce based which I didn't mind so much with the noodles. I felt like the bok choy was a bit undercooked and the beef wasn't particularly tender. I did appreciate that ordering and the delivery of food was extremely quick. Also, I have to say that I'm pretty impressed by how expansive their menu was of different Taiwanese dishes that signifies that this restaurant is actually opened by Taiwanese people. Overall, T. I didn't get any photos but my four sons, my husband, father, mother and I went at lunch time and I saw the hours on yelp. I didn't realize after our long drive that they closed from 2:30-4:30 to prep for dinner. I was able to see the picture on instagram after we ate and I saw their door did in fact have the same hours posted but I didn't read them since I was focused on my littles. The server who's name I feel bad I didn't get seated us and got right to business. He got our drinks and food and let us know to order everything now because they do in fact close their kitchen at 2. I neglected to mention I had even called two days prior to see if they were open on thanksgiving and called before we arrived to see if they were in fact open. To continue on our drinks and food followed shortly after. Service was quick. Food was delicious! The servers were kind and respectful! My father ordered mei fun. I ordered rice cake. It was nice to see they had gluten free options. I even got the spicy cucumber salad. My husband got chicken cutlet curry and my mother got the shrimp and chicken shumai and my sons got pork steamed dumplings. We even ordered takeout for my brother which was lo-mein. Everyone was pleased with how great everything tasted. We will be back to try the food again. It's one of our new favorites! My brother said his lo mein was the best he has ever had. I didn't try it due to not being able to eat gluten without consequences. But I did try the mei fun, the broth of my husbands curry, I had my rice cakes and spicy cucumber salad. Everything I tried I really enjoyed. I will be back to try the congee! I was not able to get pictures of the food but presentation was great! Spectacular food at a reasonable price. Nice, relaxing atmosphere. We went for a late Saturday afternoon lunch. Pork fried dumplings, Sesame Sweet buns, Beef Lo Mein, Sweet and Sour Medley with Tofu, and Beef Stewed Noodle Soup. The food was served quickly. The food is excellent (easily 5 stars for the food). Had one of the best beef and scallion pancake rolls I've ever had here. The beef was much more tender than I've had from other locations. And the staff was very friendly. But be sure to read the other reviews because this place is tiny and the service is slow, so just know that going in. What's too bad about that is that it keeps this place from living up to its potential as a great place to pop in and get some excellent street food quickly while doing something else in Northampton. That leaves it as a little bit of a "tweeter" in that it's slow for a quick snack and there are other competitors nearby for a full sit down meal. But despite that, the street food is excellent and highly worth making some time for as long as you know the limitations going in. read more

Alm I can figure is there is not much of an Asian community hear driving good authentic food. Spicy wontons, sweet almost no spice and verging on being cold Taiwan cabbage there were a couple choices of preparation, the garlic stir fry was flavorless and not very special at all The chicken wings we were asked various prep options we picked Thai, wow it had hot and sweet Thais chili sauce and FYI that doesn't make it Thai...the wings didn't have anything special to be anything Thai about it The eggplant and chicken was good but still really lacking flavor The soup dumpling aka: Shanghai dumplings barely beyond slightly warm - weird because normally in most places you need to wait a while to eat or you would burn your mouth badly Udon noodle was average at best not bad but not great - this was reasonable in flavor but noodle quality was less than average maybe it's packaged noodle and not fresh Recommend: NO Would I go back: NO Cleanliness: Good Bathroom: Good Service: Average Atmosphere: Non Taiwanese and very contemporary could be anything Sorry but a 1star is all I'll give read more

Wow are we happy we found this spot. Having lived in LA for about 10 years before moving back to the Berkshires, there's a lot of food we still miss. Taiwanese street food is right up there for most missed. T. Root was just what we need to fill that craving and it did so wonderfully! Lots of our favorites on the menu such as the stewed pork over rice bowl, congee, cold hot oil beef, and lots of noodle dishes to choose from. This place is just ridiculously good. And authentic! We've been here like 4 times, driving over an hour to get here from Connecticut each time. Authentic, really good food. T. Roots is insanely popular and a tiny space, so be prepared to wait for a table if you want to eat in. From the looks of things, they do a banging takout business as well. You don't come here for kid glove service, you come for the FOOD!! It gets pretty crazy at times. Some standouts: First of all, they have congee (like a rice porridge) in a variety of different configurations (chicken and veggie, pork and duck egg)--soooo good. I was introduced to congee during an extended dive trip in Asia, and I would eat it every day for breakfast if I could (I certainly did there!). I usually get the chicken and veggie. The perfect comfort food. The pan fried pork dumplings, ohhhh my god! Tiny little pillows of deliciousness. Probably the best I've had anywhere. The milk teas: try the oolong or matcha variety. Refreshing! The spicy cucumber salad: I had this for the first time the last time I was there; I saw the plate go by and asked the server "what is that"? and had to have some. I think I inhaled it in like a minute. Just ridiculously good. Radish cake appetizer, unusual and yummy. Comes with a delectable dipping sauce. Soup dumplings, completely authentic. Squirty little blobs of yumminess. The pork and pickled radish soup: I ordered this the first time because it seemed like the weirdest thing on the menu, but it is soooo good. The broth must be bone broth or something; it has a umami that is hard to describe but I swooned from the first bite; the pork so tender, the crunch of the bok choy and the pickled radishes (also hard to describe but yummy!). The flounder filet dishes, one with simple veggies and one with spicy bean sauce (not super spicy). The fish is falling-off-the-chopsticks succulent and tender. The food is so good here, and the drive so far, that I usually eat a meal in, and order another meal for the next day to go. That's how good it is. I hope they stay in business a long long time. There are many more things on the menu I'd like to try, if I can stay away from my favorites long enough (lookin' at you, Moon Shrimp Pancake). read more

Really delicious food. Congee was simple yet flavorful. For those who aren't familiar with congee, think of it as Asian grits (its that scrumptious bowl that the dragon from Mulan feeds mulan). Popcorn chicken was the star of the meal. Crispy and not too salty, and moist in the middle. Beef noodles had really delicious pickles, and the broth was excellent. If I come back again, ill probably order another congee and maybe their clear noodle dishes. Really fruit oolong has real fruit, and very very refreshing. And their boba is on point! So we were in the mood for something new and didn't know where to go when this little gem popped up as a suggestion on my phone. Their is not much to the place and if you judge the book by it's cover you are going to miss all the substance that place has to offer. Under Stewed Clear Noodles I ordered the Beef Eggplant with spicy sauce. Oh my lord was this exquisite. Yes spicy but not overpoweringly so that you didn't miss all the flavor that the dish had. We've eaten here quite a few times & have absolutely loved it. However, we ate here again on Sunday night & were gravely disappointed. The food was not hot & basically had no flavor. The Kimchi/Pork Fried Rice was primarily tasteless rice with very little pork or Kimchi & the Shanghai Mei Fun was cold & extremely salty. The steamed vegetable dumplings were good, but again, not hot. I was shocked. I'm only hoping that for some reason Sunday night was a very "off" night not to be repeated. I know that can happen. I've never written a review before, but felt I had to find a way to possibly let the restaurant owners know about this experience. After coming in here to grab a guava juice once, which was sweet and hit the spot, I decided to come back to try their food. The scallion pancake beef wraps might be my new favorite thing. I love the mix of flavors. The beef is so tasty and the greens inside bring a nice added crunch. The pancake texture is just right. I just love everything about it. IT IS SO GOOD. Too good. My boyfriend enjoyed their beef noodle soup, which was as savory as can be. They have many gluten free options here and the food is reasonably priced. I soooooo wanted this place to be amazing and authentic. But I tried 3x. Once when they first opened and then last night. All times the food was terribly bland no matter what it was. I thought they forgot to put the sauce on one dish but no..... Last night I had the pork soup dumplings which were mediocre and ok. So I want to be careful in pointing out that I am white, so I very much don't want to speak over any southeast Asian folks who are saying the food here is bland: if that's your experience, it is what it is and that's unfortunate. Now, that said, I eat Thai-spicy, Korean-spicy, and Indian-spicy food all the time and enjoy the robust flavors. I'm not the type of white person who thinks garlic is spicy. I like a lot of flavor in my food. I find the food here to be very flavorful. Is it authentic? Well I don't know. They have things like General Tso that obviously isn't an original Chinese dish and is very Americanized. They also have a bunch of other options on the menu, many of which seem to be more authentic. One limiting factor for my experience is that I am vegan, so there aren't as many vegan options on the menu as you might hope, though I will say, a friend of mine who is a server there has told me that anything on the menu that is offered with a tofu option is made with a vegan base so that as long as you aren't adding meat to it, it's suitable for vegans, so that's awesome. I am particularly fond of the spicy noodle soup and the ma po tofu. They also have really nice steamed buns. I keep hoping someone somewhere will make a xiao long bao that is *vegan*...just replace the pork with veggie meat or tofu or something guys! Maybe take notes from Panda Garden up in Williamsburg which has a huge section of their menu that uses a mushroom-based faux meat and is wonderful. Soup dumplings with veggie meat would be a godsend and I would personally die fat and happy eating those on the regular lol I also find their scallion pancakes to be really good. There are some Chinese and Thai places in the valley that serve really bland, almost dried out scallion pancakes. These are a crisp, bready texture and have good flavor. Ever since Cafe Evolution shuttered, this has been my favorite place to go in Northampton for vegan food. I never make it to Pulse because they are closed due to some obscure religious observances whenever I have time off to eat out. Wild Chestnut is nice, but is only open for brunch and lunch hours, so I never am able to make it over there even though I really like the folks who took it over and run it. So T.Roots is a great option, their food is good, it's reasonably fast service unless they get a huge rush of customers, and they are reasonably priced. As for the comments about how the ambience is not authentically Taiwanese...I mean...guys....look at the menu prices. They aren't charging you what a restaurant that drops thousands on redocrating and rennovating a storefront would. Nobody in Northampton could afford that since it's like 90% Smith College students. It's an old Italian restaurant that closed down and has been reopened as a Taiwanese place. Let's not be too metropolitan in our criticism of a small town restaurant here, Gordon Ramsey! read more

Prior to this place, I have never found a restaurant that made authentic 台灣滷肉飯 （Taiwanese minced pork/pork belly on top of rice) so I've always made my own. This place gets a nod from me on this dish alone. The prices are a little higher but being on the Main Street in Northampton comes at a cost so I accept their prices as fair. Awesome, authentic Taiwanese food! My girlfriend and I came to this place as it was opening and were pleasantly surprised by the excellent flavors, freshness, and authenticity of the food. We've been looking for good Asian cuisine as there aren't many options in the area and this place did NOT disappoint. We got the beef noodle soup and spring rolls and loved both of them. Not to mention our server was super kind and helped us with any questions we had about the menu.
