Honestly, I think this place is great. A lot of poor reviews, not sure why, but this is the place to go if you're looking to throw an event, party, shower, etc. Or if you're into decorating your place, or whatnot. I wish I knew about this place long before so my fat, pregnant self (back last year) wouldn't have had to walk around downtown LA looking for decorations with my huge, swollen feet to prepare for my baby shower. The store is MASSIVE. It's basically like a Costco of arts, crafts, & decorations. Now, if you want to specialize in certain crafts or hobbies, you may need to venture out, in addition, to this place to look for your needs. For example, if you're into scrapbooking, this may not be the place for you as there are many tiny little details that go into scrapbooking. Think of it like Costco. They'll carry most of your basic needs for arts and crafts but for certain "spices" go to Michael's, or shop online. And, yes, for come reason it says "Michael's" on the receipt, but it's not Michael's. I don't know why, but you can't use Michael's coupon at this place. A lot of the same items they carry at Michael's that they carry here at Moskatel's will be cheaper, and some will be the same price, from what I saw. This review is long overdue and I realize as I'm shopping around looking for wedding centerpieces and crafts that no shop can compare to Moskatels. First off it's HUGE, think Michael's times 10! There are isles of ribbons, seasonal decor, tissue paper, yarn, fake flowers, a room full of just vases from center piece size to one places at the head of an isle, and all sorts of crafts. Aside from the large selection of everything and anything, the prices were also really reasonably priced. The people who work here are pretty knowledgeable and helpful even when it's busy which is was a pleasant surprise for me. This is like a one stop shop for DIY weddings or other events. You seriously get the most bang for your buck and the quality is good too. **NOTE** Parking in this area is tough especially on weekends so go early. If you are lucky enough to snag a spot in their parking lot know that with a $4 minimum purchase the spot is validated! Also, it's in the heart of the flower district so there are so many areas to inspire your flower needs. Lastly, if you're a last minute holiday decor shopper come a the day before to get even larger discounts off the holiday stuff (50-75% off!!). Seriously, how can you not love this place?!? read more

My absolutely fav spot for all thing crafting and decorating, both indoor and outdoor. Pricing is a bit less than your typical Micheals, Big Lots, Hobby Lobby etc... but the best is to go after a big holiday or as the seasons are switching out- that is when you get the REAL DEALS. Staff is friendly, but always busy so don't get frustrated if you can't find help immediately. With big items they typically will help to your car. I recommend parking in the lot to avoid meters and any unfortunate homeless encounters (heavily populated area). Moskatels really has an abundance of everything! read more

I have always wanted to go here for the longest time. I barely scratched the surface going around during their last hour of business. I just wished they'd stay open a little bit later. This is a craft person's paradise. They have supplies for almost anything you can think of. From baking, painting, jewelry, and even silk floral design. There are rows of selections to choose from. I remember reading a review about giving yourself enough time to go around the store, which is definitely true. If you have a party to plan, this is a one stop shop to go to if you're in a time crunch. Every item you need for your table scape to party favors is here. Just have your party list handy because you could easily be side tracked and end up roaming at an aisle you may find interesting. Moskatels offers two free hours of parking with validation and a minimum purchase of four dollars. That is why I plan to go back and give updates on the merchandise I find interesting at this store. I was DTLA and when too sooo many stores I forgot to check in at many of them and I guess this is one of them. I was here on Saturday Sept 5 and returned on Tues Sept 8, I was so excited to be back and have the time to explore the new changes they made to Moskatels. They Turned Up this store and I was there for hours just looking and taking notes of what I will purchase for the holidays when I return and return I will, I will, I will. On this visit I was purchasing cake supplies and some decorations for a Boy's baby shower, (I think they favor girl's as I had to keep asking for BLUE THINGS) Any Hoo, I did eventually get all the supplies I needed for that day and a few items not needed, JUST BECAUSE. Huge and a bit overwhelming. Glad they validate for two hours if you spend $4.00 or more. Lots of things to look at. I wish they had bigger signs to tell you where certain things are. Not a huge selection of pomanders but decent. Lanterns are expensive and are always low on white. Silk flowers are still pricey but better than Michael's. Be sure to watch the register as they scan, sometimes they don't know what's on sale and can run the risk of charging you full price so pay attention! Store has a big selection of decor for weddings, birthdays, quinceaneras, baptism, first communion, etc. You can find everything you need for small and big events. A little pricey but some stuff worth paying a little extra $. My only issue were the workers there. They don't have knowledge of knowing where certain items are when asked. Also, when paying at the register, an item they scanned said costed $25 and I let them know I had grabbed it from a basket it said $15 , the little group of employees were like "No, those aren't that price, that's not the price" like calling me a liar right there. I politely told him he may want to change his tone and his approach, and his response to me in another nasty tone was: "Well I said Please"! by this time I was over it so I proceeded to go to the register so I could pay for my items and leave. Yes, this store has everything under the sun that a crafter could possibly want, but so does the Internet- and you don't have to deal with the UNBELIEVABLY RUDE STAFF that works at Moskatels. I have been shopping at Moskatels (Michael's DTLA) for well over 15 years, and completely DREAD going in there every single time I have to. I work in DTLA and it is a block from my office, so the convenience factor is off the charts. BUT I can no longer handle the rude, unhappy staff, the ridiculous parking garage, the parking rules and lack of employees that are eager to help OR JUST WALK AWAY WHEN I ASK A QUESTION. So I now gladly wait the 2 days it takes to receive my crafting supplies from the numerous online stores that are eager for my business, offer free shipping, and can be done all from the comfort of my pajamas with a glass of wine. Don't they know that foot traffic is dying at retail? They are single-handingly pissing off the crafting community. My prediction- this store won't be open in 5 years. Even though they say they are NOT Michael's, they are.... and they try their hardest to make sure that you know they are not Michael's.. even though the store manager's email is @michaels.com and their phone number is listed on the Michael's website and they use this as an excuse for any issue that you might have when you make a complaint. It's really disappointing. As a creative who likes to see and touch before I buy, they are doing an amazing job of destroying the enjoyment I get out of craft shopping. Look past the barbed wire next to it and some sketchy people on the sidewalk and you can find some good craft deals! The usual Michael's items are priced as they normally are (still mostly pricey for me) but I couldn't resist the clearance items! $1.99 for Martha Stewart acrylic paint, $1 skeleton key stamp, and a $1 wood whale cutout. The selection is also awesome since the store is huge with a retail side and wholesale side. Makes you feel like going back to look at different sections depending on your current craft project needs. Minus 1 star because a store employee told my friend she could use the Michael's 20% off entire purchase coupon as long as the items were all Michael's items. However the cashier would not ring up the coupon, saying that the store does not allow discounts off entire purchases. read more

Just discovered this place while grabbing craft supplies downtown. Really hard not to be inspired by the huge collection of things they have here. The store itself is huge. Normally this would be a good thing, but I walked in 30 minutes before close and therefore, had to run around to find what I was looking for. The selection is great, they have TONS of floral supplies, and great selection of vases and feathers. It's cheaper than Michael's. Actually, their prices seemed better than most craft stores I've been to. Somewhere I would definitely go back to, but cut out more time for myself to browse and look around, being that the place is so big. Came here with my BF to get xmas decorations. Second year we do this. The things they had were much better the last time we came. I was pretty disappointed this time around but I must say that the few cool things I found were a hit in my office cubicle at work. I did however end up spending a ton of money lol. Everything here is 40, 50 or 70 etc. % off but you still end up spending a lot of cash. I will say my BF's mother got a nice fake tree with lights on it for 50 % off or so. She has used it a couple of years and it still works and looks great. They have a lot where you can park for I think two hours free with validation. It isn't really enough time to shop and go eat for example and the fee is $10 if you exceed the validated time - I think. What can I do without at Moskatel's? I was there on November 9th around 11am to purchase. Christmas Decorations. I was going to purchase Icicle lights and I asked them if they can test it at the register. The cashier didn't know how to respond a simple question. Asked to the cashier next to her which was Kim. Kim's approach was so rude and disrespectful. "her word was WHAT DO YOU WANT" I asked to speak to a manager which was Ken came and took the lights and started testing it. I asked Ken, can we tested the others one to it says it's warm white and it was blueish white. Ken, didn't even try to help at all I had to do it myself/ I asked Kim, at the time of purchase what is the return policy she said it's within five days. On Wednesday, I took at my tree started decorating and I have noticed the two plain wooden wreath in gray that I have purchased was not the right color. I found my receipt and I was going to come in and return them I took a look at the receipt it said NO RETURNS on seasonal. I'm so upset! I have been trying to call the store for the past three days have not been very successful. Twice someone picked up and clearly HANGEDUP. I do have to come in and purchase more items I wanted to return this two wreath. Would a manager email me with a call back number I do need to speak to someone today since is the last day to return. Any craft person will find joy in almost every aisle in this store. Any occasion - birthday, wedding, baby shower, baptism, etc. they have it. Any holiday - Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc. they have it. Moskatel's and Michaels are related and carry many of the same items, but Moskatel's beats Michaels as far as selection. I love coming here, I always see something new, something exciting and something that sparks my curiosity. A word to the wise - I wouldn't buy paper plates, plates, utensils, candles, etc. You can buy them in bulk elsewhere for cheaper. read more
