Overpriced. It took 40 minutes to prepare my food. The food was lackluster (an unremarkable "adult grilled cheese" and a pitiful kimchi fried rice special that's nothing like the real stuff). Front of house staff wasn't friendly and spent too much time chatting between themselves, while one of them was glued to the iPhone, despite a line that grew and grew all the way to the front door. Moss Café is a neighborhood gem. I first heard about it from CUPS but I do believe they've been around for some time now. We decided to check them out for brunch on Sunday. The espresso drinks did not disappoint and the food was very good. Healthy too, and this is a great spot for vegetarians. We enjoyed the baked eggs and the gravlax toast. And don't forget the savory scones! The caramelized onion scone was actually one of the best things we ate that day. Do note that they are closed on Saturdays and that the space is rather small so you might be sitting very close to your neighbors. read more

It has been 2 years since I first wrote a review of Moss Cafe, so a brief update. In a nutshell, Moss continues to thrive in menua expansion and customer service, and offer its patrons food we want. Personally, I am gluten free (GF) and I *love* the options from salads to GF toast with avocado to their infamous GF muffins. Their customer service has improved and they keep the order line moving. There is usually a seat at sat a table, but they can get crowded at peak times (Sundays, for sure). The food is ​absolutely top notch. I am eating their "shaved vegetable salad" at the moment and it is delicious. (It is also GF and Vegan, fo those interested, though I added a poached egg to mine.) And yes, when I said at "the moment", I mean right now on their Internet. I continue to come back for morning work on laptop when I am not going into the office. It is a great place to work and equally nice to have a breakfast with a friend. Weekday mornings seems to attract people woking on laptops, whereas weekends is more social. Enjoy this gem! read more

I'd prefer not to give 3 stars but unfortunately the food did not meet expectations. The place has a great cafe feel though very busy on Sunday. A bit cramped for my liking but speaks to being a much enjoyed place. They serve kosher food and provide a ritual hand washing station. Place was clean, including tables and floors despite being very busy. The staff were friendly and seemed to be having a good time. I ordered take out and it took about 30min. Their online ordering system was easy to use. To the food. I ordered off the Sunday brunch menus. I ordered their butternut squash sandwich, the Autumn panini $15. The taste was delicious! The portion was not adequate. There was very little squash spread. And the salad was bland and dry. Very disappointed. I saw some of the other dishes and they certainly didn't seem so small. The food here is delicious. They have a nice selection of fresh and healthy options for brunch. Whether you are in the mood for eggs, pastries, salads, or lunch fare, this place has lots of items to choose from. All of their food is creative and fresh tasting. The coffee is strong, the breads and other baked goods are delicious, and there are usually daily specials which add nice variations to the menu. This place is great for vegetarians and vegans, as well as people who keep Kosher. The dining space here is very small and chaotic. It is difficult to enjoy a relaxing brunch in this establishment, as you are always in somebody's way no matter where you are. You bus your own table, which is slightly oxymoronic, as you have to battle your way over to the bussing station in order to do so. Once you get there, the bus bins are often overflowing with dishes, and you have to be very careful not to topple the pile of dishes over. The staff here are excellent. They do a great job at dealing with the crowd and working with each patron to make the dining experience as smooth as possible. They step in and serve you when possible and also work hard to keep the line moving. The prices at this place are also higher than average. Every dish is quite expensive, especially considering the service that you get and the overall chaotic experience of eating there. It is great to have a good vegetarian establishment in Riverdale with innovative and healthy dishes. Moss Café does a great job at providing Riverdale with a modern and unique place to eat. If they could somehow improve the dining experience, this place would be much more enjoyable to eat at. I know it is a small space, but there are other small dining establishments that are not as stressful to eat at. read more

If you are not Kosher, may as well cross the street to Starbucks. We didn't like anything on the menu so ordered coffee and cake. They don't serve decaf coffee but serve decaf cappuccino. What???? Cappuccino was served in a to go cup because their mugs were all dirty. Smallest darn cappuccino in the world, which they say is 6oz. Really ... 3 sips ... this Italian ain't buying it. This cafe is the real deal of farm to table. Everything looks and tastes fresh and delicious. They have some seating outside and they operate as to-go at this time. The proportions were a bit small for the price, especially for the drinks. But if you like healthy foods, especially a vegetarian diet, give this place a try. read more

This place is little bit overrated and extremely overpriced. I got a cup of coffee for 5$ just regular coffee that really tasted like water! When I told the barista it taste like water, she was like yea that's a drip coffee that's how it is, if you want stronger coffee you can buy an espresso?! Also, I ordered shakshuka which costed around 20$ and ended up super tiny plate with undercooked eggs. Anyways! I think bottom line, I wouldn't recommend their regular coffee and their shakshuka at least. I have since been back for the food three times and it's been my favorite place to grab brunch in the neighborhood. Everything I've had here has been delicious. I've tried the brown rice bowl with harissa sauce and an extra poached egg, the shakshuka, and the sweet bowl. All I would definitely get again. It's nice to have a healthy place to grab something to eat that has excellent quality food. The green ice tea and beet lemonade are highly recommended in terms of drinks. Do note that they are closed early on Friday and all day Saturday, and that seating is a bit limited and tight. Otherwise, this place is very highly recommended! read more

Checked this place out recently. I tried the Bimbimbap bowl w/ egg over easy (I'm a big fan of Korean) and the Honey Biscuit. It took a while to prepare, but was told everything is made fresh to order. The bimbimbap bowl was cool, on the plus side, clearly fresh ingredients and everything was made from scratch. On the negative side, it wasn't as authentically Korean as I would've like, tasted more Korean inspired. The honey biscuit had great texture, but it was too sweet for my taste. This place isn't bad at all, but the final point is, price was ~$30 for these 2 items. I get that fresh costs, but I couldn't see myself spending $30 here again. If money is not issue, and you're in the area, it's extremely fresh food that's clearly made with care. When I take price into account I have to give it 3 stars. If it was more in the $20 range for what I got, I think it would probably get 4. Just my opinion! read more

I love this place. Avocado toast - Generous amount of avocado with lemon, red onions, chili flakes over large piece of toast. Pay $2 extra for a farm egg. I would have liked it better if the egg was poached, but overall a very delicious dish. I'll probably get this every time I have a craving for avocado toast. Its just a piece of toast, but the dish left me filling full. I also got a cup of their carrot coconut soup, and it was so perfect for the cold weather. It reminded me of some familiar Indian would highly recommend anyone visiting the area to try a cup Shakshuka stew - my sis ordered as a dairy free option, however, they forgot about the request and added the feta cheese to the stew as well as butter to the toast. They were really apologetic about it and remade the order. In addition, they gave us a free sample of vegan applesauce loaf, which tasted like Christmas in my mouth! So moist and flavorful! It takes about 20 minutes for the stew to be made, so we waited about 30-40 minutes for the correct order to come out. By the time it came out, we were both full from my avocado toast and carrot coconut soup, that we barely had room for the shakshuka. The Shakshuka is served in a cast iron skillet, served with kale, potato, 2 eggs, and tomato sauce. I thought it was ok but it was not my favorite. This is a cute little cafe in the Riverdale area. It tends to be quite crowded in the weekends but they ave a very effective system of sitting everyone quickly. You come in, you order and then they bring your food. The food in itself is pretty good, the coffee is pretty good. I did find the prices a bit steep and a little overpriced however the food is quite fresh. The service is pretty good and pretty to the point. read more

One of the best restaurants in the city, hands down. The coffee, food, and pastries are all amazing. Our favorite dinner dishes are whatever the daily pasta is, the salmon fried rice, the portobello burger, and the tofu reuben. I realize that's like half the menu, but you really can't go wrong here. My one complaint is that the line tends to be kind of long for coffee. Not sure why this is, one thing I noticed though is that (unlike at every other coffee shop) the cold brew and espresso drinks are priced the same, which might be pushing people toward the longer to make espresso drinks. Maybe one should be a few cents more expensive or the other should be a few cents less expensive? The pastries are also better labeled on some days than others, which leads to more conversations with each customer before they can order. Anyway I'm not going to dock them a star for this, especially since it's still the best coffee in the area, but I do feel like they could streamline the process a bit. read more

My friend and I are always on the hunt for a cool coffee shop where we can sip, gossip, and work in our own neighborhood. She came across this place reading a review, and we decided to check it out on a Saturday early afternoon. I found it to be a good spot for brunch and getting some work down. It totally beats Starbucks butt! It's also perfect for both health nuts and coffee aficionados. FACILITY When I first entered te cafe, I noticed how narrow the space was. It was already packed with the brunch crowd. Every single table was occupied. Fortunately, my friend had saved me a seat at the counter. Seating is limited to 10-15 small tables and 3-4 counter seats. The space was spotless. The condiments station seemed to be wiped clean and the bathroom was spick and span. Even though the eatery was crowded, I did not have to shout at my friend. The acoustics kept the volume comfortably low. In fact, the customer next to me was studying for his bar exam. So, if it's good enough for a law student, it's good enough for me. Decor had a vintage feel. There was a chalkboard menu, and a wall of potted plants and herbs. FOOD Moss sells vegetarian and kosher foods, including baked goods (zucchini bread anyone?), soups, sandwiches, brunch staples, and hot coffee and tea beverages. So, just by walking into this vegetarian hot spot, I feel 10 times healthier. I ordered a lentil soup, and it was slamming! Yes, it was healthy and vegetarian, but it was uber-flavorful. Unfortunately, delicious healthy goodness comes at a price. The food here is quite pricey. SERVICE The staff here is young, helpful, and friendly. They greeted me with a smile and speedily gave me my order. They didn't rush my friend and I, so we stayed longer and ordered more food. As a Vegan in the Bronx Riverdale area, I'm faced with limited options for delivery. Moss Cafe is an excellent option and I order via Uber Eats regularly. The avocado toast is great. Although I do wish there were tomatoes and maybe some sprouts or greens on the toast as well. Their chimichurri tofu is delish and I can't get enough of the chia pudding. I've also had their rice bowl which was also a wonderful choice. While I have never been to the actual cafe, I'm inspired to visit in person based on my experience with delivery. read more

I cannot believe moss only has 3.5 stars. I've never wanted to comment on other's reviews so bad---one star because they didn't do latte art?? Are you for real?? Full disclosure, i did find out I knew the owner from HS, but my love affair with moss started months and months before learning that. I LOVE moss. Over the summer it was my go-to spot when I went for my morning outing with my baby. The place is small, so maneuvering a stroller in there can be quite cumbersome, but everyone from the staff to the patrons were always so friendly and willing to help a girl out. My relationship with moss started off small. A scone and a latte. Their scones are...omg. Flakey, like you can see the layers. And not plain ones either -- my favorite is the Siracha cheddar. They're baked fresh and in house, so they do run out. But not to worry, because every other baked good is equally amazing. Like, take a bite and then pause, roll your eyes and say "omg" good. After a long time of just hitting them up for coffee and danish, my husband and I finally tried a meal there. Everything we've ever had is unbelievable. Pastas made in house. My favorite dish is kimchi salmon fried rice. Not to be super basic, but their avocado toast is also a regular order of mine. They've also been super accommodating, letting me get a small portion of their ricotta and berries for my daughter, for example. They are a bit pricey, but for freshly made all in house food as good as this is, I'll happily pay. They do get PACKED. So if you are going during peak times, expect to wait. But it is worth it. And if you don't want to wait, order and pre-pay online and pickup. I've done that many many times. read more

I have spent my entire 20+ year Riverdale residency waiting for a trendy and amazing eatery to spring up what is otherwise a pretty static food dessert. Moss Café serves up delicious food and a soundtrack that would be right at home at any Brooklyn café. The kosher status is an added plus in a bland and uninspired kosher food scene. My only complaint is the pricing, which is high for the quantity of food in the absence of table service. I imagine this relates to the kosher certification, but I would like them to find a way to incorporate some lower ticket items. For a place with a young vine, it's difficult to find anything under $10, and it's the primary reason I don't come more often or would be reluctant to invite friends to join. read more

This place was very packed when we went for lunch. We ordered for take-out and were told it would take 30 minutes. It did take at last this much time, maybe even more. We took a short walk and still seemed to wait a long time when we came back. We ordered the kale salad and the farmer's plate. They were both very expensive but we figured it was at least worth a try. The salad was a generous size and very fresh. For the farmer's plate, the eggs and the greens were very good but the potatoes lacked flavor. For the high prices (like Manhattan hipster prices), I won't be visiting too often. Not only was the food at this friendly, cute neighborhood place delicious, but the staff went out of their way to accommodate my family: they were packed when my husband and I showed up (exhausted, hungry and with 2 cranky kids) and instead of bowing us out, they rearranged tables for us, brought over crayons and made us feel welcome. Beyond that, the adults and the kids alike enjoyed everything that we ordered, from the homemade beet lemonade and pickles to the tofu Reuben and fish with spinach and cheesy polenta.
