I've been here plenty of times but typically it's with a group of friends and we hit the bar. Last night (01/23/2026) I came here to sit actually sit in the dining area and enjoy a meal. My friend and I were there for a late Birthday/Christmas celebration. I called and made reservations due to it being a Friday evening and I'm glad that I did as it did get very busy. The dining area is sectioned off and I really like the ambience that the low lighting/candles set, it's perfect for a date night. I started with an espresso martini-I love that they give you the option of Baileys or no Baileys, not all restaurants do this. My friend got the Titos martini with blue cheese stuffed olives and she said it was delicious. We started off with the fan favorite Southwest Shrimp Fritters, Warm Brie & Artichoke Dip and Raw Oysters. The fritters are always fantastic, and I will order them every time I go to Mother's lol. The brie and artichoke dip is nice, but the bread was quite oily, and I didn't feel there was enough artichoke in the dip. I didn't indulge in the oysters but was told they were great. We both ordered the Pan Seared Scallops with Black Fettuccine. The scallops were cooked to absolute perfection and I enjoy that the dish isn't smothered in the cream sauce. Of course it wouldn't be a celebration without dessert! I ordered the Crème Brûlée and my friend got the Espresso Cheesecake. The Crème Brûlée had that lovely crispy top and the custard was smooth and creamy without being overly sweet. I was told that the Espresso cheesecake was heavy but very good as well. We also ordered a slice of Peanut Butter Pie each to go. I would highly recommend any of those desserts. Our server's name was Amanda, she was lovely-very attentive and knowledgeable. We did a lot of research looking for a relatively reasonably priced restaurant for fine dining i.e. white tablecloths and good service and came up with Mothers. The rock wall interior is cozy and hip. The service by Skylar was outstanding - attentive but didn't hover. We had a lovely conversation as well. I had the halibut which was positively heavenly. The company was phenomenal. That was the 10 star part of the evening. The service was great. The food was lacking. My husband and I got some oysters to start. They were fine. I ordered the ny strip rare. It came medium. It was overdone for my liking. I also didnt say anything. I maybe should have, but I dont like to. The potatoes were fine and the green beans were fine. My husband got the duck and said it was fine. The cocktails were good. When you pick a place to go out to, you expect the food to be more than just fine. Will I return? Maybe for a cocktail. I don't usually write multiple reviews for the same place but Mothers deserves them. The scallops and black linguine is really good, I've actually never had a bad dinner here. It gets really busy after 5 so get there early. I sat at the bar and it's like a locals hangout. The drinks are good but my only suggestion is to get some dark Luxardo cherries for the old fashioned's they are so much better than the bright red overly sweet Maraschino cherries. read more

I have heard great things about this restaurant so I was excited to try it out for my friends birthday. The bar area is so nice, I could sit at the bar all day for cocktails. The food and service left something to be desired. They don't let you order appetizers unless you order all of your food at once. I've never heard of that policy at any other restaurant I've been to...and that's a lot lol. The appetizers were really good - we ordered shrimp fritters, clams, and the brie and artichoke dip. We ordered cocktails such as Palomas, wine, margaritas, etc. and they were all good and fairly priced. The entrees though were less than great. I ordered the scallops linguine that has black noodles but they had no ink flavor so I'm not sure if they just dyed them? They didn't advertise it as ink pasta, I just assumed because of the color. The saffron sauce had no saffron flavor. The scallops were cooked perfectly though. My friends all got different steak dishes and regardless of whether they ordered medium rare or medium, they all came out super rare and the vegetables were cold. We sent back 2 of the dishes and asked them to cook the meat a little more ... The food came back 2 minutes later with no additional cook to it. But everyone knows you don't send food back a second time unless you want to risk it being tampered with, So we all sucked it up and ate our food. Was it great? No... But it was good. A lot of my friend recommended this place so we decided to try this place for our valentine date night. It is a very cozy and romantic looking place. We made reservations because I knew how pack it was gonna get around Valentine's week. We got seated right away. The staffs were super friendly. We made our order and my husband got himself a glass of wine. The first I notice was this wine glass was dirty and there was something floating in the wine. I immediately asked the staff for a new glass. The starters were good, the Brie was a little heavy. My favorite starter was the steamed mussels. The broth was so good and the meat comes off the s very easily. Next was our main dish. It was quite disappointing. My fish came undercooked so I couldn't even finish it even if I want to. I've never been as underwhelmed by bread and butter in my life. Yet Mother's managed to find the most flavorless bread ever. How is that possible?!? Mother's is an institution in Buffalo and we have been there several times but dare I say - it is in decline. The atmosphere itself is still romantic and cozy with an amazing outdoor space. Service is okay, but it seemed that there was a delay in all aspects (drinks, appetizers and mains). Food was the major issue. Appetizers were great, hummus and bread baskets - with olives, roasted red peppers, cheese..etc.. Mains were disappointing. Steak was cooked perfectly but not seasoned properly, and the veggies were just oversteamed green beans. Someone else ordered the scallops and pasta - and same issue, very unseasoned. We had called ahead for seating and actually ended up with a couple less people, which ended up working out well because we were able to sit at one large table outside under the gazebo. Our server Jen was really fun! She was running all over, but I don't remember ever wanting for anything or trying to find her, so that's always good :) I had been looking at the menu for about a week trying to decide between swordfish or scallops. I went with the swordfish and I'm happy I did. It was amazing! Nice size cut, cooked perfectly. Came with asparagus which I really like, and they did a great job with that! Soft but had a snap to it, it was good. The rice I had with mine was amazing. We had a wide range of dishes around the table so I was able to see quite a bit. Everyone really enjoyed their food, and didn't hear any complaints. We ordered a bunch of appetizers as well, they were all really good. Honestly I wasn't impressed. I've heard about mother's for years and how it's really expensive and has nice fancy food. Well I got a steak and it was pretty mid. The food was kind of like eating a wedding dinner at a massive banquet hall. Just nothing special. My gps took me and another couple to the wrong side of the building and we had no idea where to go and some woman smoking outside told us to go in through the kitchen so we did ‍ the service was a struggle because we had one server taking care of everyone on the heated patio...like 30 people. After an hour or so more people finally started helping him. He was great but some of the waitresses there definitely had an attitude. Meh. You can find better out there in Buffalo. read more

Very comfy and casual restaurant. I set myself up thinking white table cloths meant dress up for a nice night, but jeans and hats are common attire. Food was very good and for a more "formal" dinner service the prices are well within reason. The menu is more comfort food than expanding your taste buds. Crab cakes, fantastic, stuffed peppers, phenomenal. Meatloaf and scallop entrees were also large and delicious. Good size desert menu as well. The bar seemed to be a nice hangout, but the cocktails were inconsistent, and they did not come with a large ice ball for my old fashion. We tried Mother's because we had heard good things. The experience was good but not great and wish I could give 3.5 stars. But to get the negative out of the way, we did experience an issue with the entrees as others have stated. To start, the wife ordered wine and I chose a mixed drink. They were good and since we aren't drink connesuers, they did the job. We chose the brie and artichoke dip as an appetizer. It was good but we didn't taste the brie, but it came out hot and thought it was still worth it. Entrees are where I feel Mother's lost points. I had the Black Fettuccine with Scallops and the wife had the Halibut. The fettuccine dish came out hot but pasta seemed overdone/soft and texture like I was eating egg noodles, that's how soft they were. The dish had a good taste. Scallops were very good and very warm so clearly the last to be cooked. The Halibut had to have been the first done and not kept warm because it was barely warm and almost room temp. No chance we were sending it back for a warm up. If it were warm, it would have tasted better. We attempted dessert and ordered the creme brulee. I thought it was good and came out nice and hot. Overall it was fine, but don't know if we would pick this place over others. read more

Major service problems from the outset, took 25 minutes just for a server to come by and take our orders, at which point we decided to just order drinks and food at once since it was getting late. 35 minutes later the food finally came...before our drinks ever arrived! What a mess. And not an apology or acknowledgment to be had. Food was fine (linguini sorta bland, guest enjoyed his bolognese) but not special enough to wipe away the frustration of sitting down and waiting over an hour for a round of drinks. Firstly, we had the best server who was so friendly and accommodating as we initially started out outside, but then my partner was a little cold, so were able to move inside without any interruption to the service experience. She was the best. In terms of the food, I opted for the Pasta Bolognese, which was very yummy. Definitely wish I had some leftovers. My partner who was in a rabbit sort of mood, I suppose and got all appetizers for her dinner, including the bread basket, mussels, and clams. She seemed to really enjoy them a lot, though she mentioned she didn't care as much for the sauce base they were both in. For drinks, I opted for a Classic Cosmopolitan and she had Prosecco. I really enjoyed my Cosmo! Almost got a second one but resisted, haha. I had my eye on the pasta for a while and I was not disappointed. What a combination! My fiancé had the veal chop and raved over every single bite. Server was super nice although it was a bit slow. The place is clean and cozy making for a nice intimate dinner. I will say for the price of the meals, they could definitely improve the aesthetic of their menu. Okay let me start off by saying, this was by far the best dinner I have ever had. I'm 29, and I LOVE trying new restaurants. It's a bit pricey, but it's well worth it. I forgot to take pictures at first because I was astonished at how great the food was. We got lobster gnocchi to start, and it was fantastic. I got the duck breast as my entree, and when I tell you it was the best food I've ever had, I mean it. We sat on the patio, and it was beautiful. Out here for work in the 716 and a college bud recommended this one. Mother's interior is absolutely warm and would be perfect as a jazz club (nice dim lighting). A lot of very eclectic folks in here from roughnecks to just some slightly uppity kids trying to make a good impression and feeling urban. Only issues..for Buffalo and the wine prices are a bit high and the crab cakes were lukewarm and more on the breadcrumb than lump meat usually akin to a proper Maryland crab cake (I lived in the DC area for 6 years...). Just a cool off the beaten path place though on a side street. Remoulade was a bit bland too.. I'd come back for a cocktail tho...very good staff and nice crowd. read more

I always wanted to come here, it's like an upper scale neighborhood dive, the atmosphere was welcoming, and we were seated upon arrival. We ordered house salads with homemade ranch dressing. I didn't care for 1 particular spice used in the dressing, my son ordered shrimp fritters which looked appetizing, but he said it was more fritter than shrimp, I ordered crab cakes which was presented nicely and the garnish of greens with a light balsamic dressing was delicious, and there was an remoulade sauce that I didn't like, because of that same spice now for the entrée, my son ordered meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans, that meatloaf had more filler than a tooth with a cavity in it, he sent it back. I ordered boulenese (I decided to step out of my comfort zone), OMG it had that same spice in it, so I asked the waiter about that particular spice, and he said it was parsley so needless to say I sent it back. Food was really good, ambiance is great, but wished we had a different server. Jason was odd, took a long time to get our drinks. We sat at 5pm before the restaurant filled up. My husband wanted another glass of wine and we were planning on getting a dessert for my friends birthday, but he took over 20 minutes to come back. He walked by us several times as my husband was trying to get his attention. Then we just said we were going to get dessert, but now it's just taking too long and he got super weird. Earlier in the dinner I told him it was my friends birthday and he didn't seem to care. I really felt like he ignored our table and was always tending to his other table. He claimed it was a busy restaurant, which it was, but there were 4 servers and maybe 15-20 tables in that whole restaurant. We were robbed of our precious time and a celebratory meal. Slow service due to understaffing. Our meal took a total of 2 hrs, 30 mins of eating and 1.5 hrs of waiting. Most plates were served luke warm. Sandy scallops and chicken were over salted, while pasta was boiled and threw in bland sauce with no depth of flavors. Duck breast was good but only 4 slices of meat was served on a plate full of couscous, it was served at a larger portion at a previous visit. The artichoke dip? It was more like a soup than a dip. Our server was kind enough to offer some complimentary dessert even though this bad meal was out of his control. We ended up leaving before taking on his offer cause it'd take another 30 mins for a bite. If this restaurant is one of the better eats in Buffalo, I'd suggest sticking with a chain restaurant for anyone who's hungry. read more

This was my first time at Mother's and I've just heard so much talk about it over the years. I was actually very underwhelmed with our meal. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't amazing either. I do know they are open late every night which helps when you can't find a place to go. The service was good also! The best food items were the oysters (but expensive as expected) and the lobster gnocchi (which is under apps but you can order as a larger portion for your meal). My sister ordered the bolognese which barely had any sauce on it (as pictured) and they were going to charge $10 for more.....
