A very kind and empathetic soul decided to pay for everyone's food. The individual left the owner $100 after tirelessly paying for many orders prior. The individual gave a clear directive to the owner to use the funds for the remaining customers. When the good-spirited soul left, the owner did not apply the gift funds to the remaining customers. When the individual returned a few minutes later and addressed the owner, the owner pretended he couldn't hear. After other customers noticed the unethical behavior by the owner, he began applying the funds to the remaining customers. The owner took additional advantage of the act of kindness, also by charging over 13.00 for two hot dogs which were priced at 4.50 each. Thankfully, the good-spirited individual gave us his contact information, (although he wanted to remain anonymous).

Those were good, but you could only buy one type of tacos once every couple of weeks, and that's if they didn't sell out first. When we found out that they opened the pop-up shop at Bread and Meat we immediately made a reservation. Who knew being able to try many different tacos at once was a game changer!? (I did) We never had their flour tortillas before, and they were so spongy and chewy, I honestly could eat them with just salt and pepper (apparently these were made with duck fat). We tried cochinita pibil, chile relleno, and these were both good (birria, which we've had before, were also delicious), but the star of the show was the asada. I typically avoid steak tacos since they inevitably disappoint when compared to what we get from wife's hometown in Norte de Mexico, but these asadas, made from chuck flats, were seriously good. Such a simple taco--salty asada, guac, and chewy tortilla--but so, So good. So good, we made reservations for the following week, in the middle of our meal. We'll be back!

It's a small shop, but everything is made fresh to order. We tried the Hokkaido scallop, pork kimchi, and tuna mayo onigiri. I seriously cannot get over the rice texture!! It is unbelievably soft and perfectly seasoned. Each onigiri is topped with bonito flakes, wrapped in seaweed, and absolutely packed with flavor. They're also a great size and surprisingly filling. My favorite was the pork kimchi because it had a nice little kick, but honestly, if it's your first time trying onigiri, you can't go wrong with the tuna mayo. We also ordered the Anko Mochi, filled with red bean paste and sweet cream, and you can absolutely tell it's homemade. It was incredible and not overly sweet at all. The mochi itself was perfectly soft and chewy, and I wish I tried more. The iced matcha latte was also excellent. It's lightly sweetened, and the quality of the matcha really stands out. This is such a great spot for breakfast or a quick grab-and-go snack. They also have a vending machine stocked with freshly made onigiri in different flavors. From what I understand, these are meant to be enjoyed cold, while the ones ordered at the counter are served warm and both are ready to eat. I didn't get a chance to try the vending machine options this time, but they're definitely on my list for my next visit! Please, please support Yama Onigiri! They're incredibly kind and welcoming, and more than happy to explain the menu if you have any questions. The shop itself is absolutely adorable, with plenty of seating. They also create their own Banff themed merchandise!! Between the amazing food, friendly service, and cozy atmosphere, this is easily one of my favorite stops in Banff!
