Each piece was a perfect rectangle with 90 degree edges-- exactly the same size and thickness as the other, which leads me to believe that not only was it not even sliced on a slicer (bad enough) but even taken out of a pre pack. Definitely the best bagels in the area if you're willing to endure the PAINFULLY slow service. And by "painful" I mean excruciating. For example, I was only second in line and it took 15 minutes!!! With FOUR people behind the counter. How is that even possible, you ask? For example, I witnessed one woman literally take one slice of cheese out at a time, using only one hand at a time, to then walk back over from the cheese bin to the cutting board where the bagel sandwich was being prepared. She then proceeded to go back and pick up a second slice, again using only one hand. And not even bothering to grab other ingredients in the process. Then, there were multiple trips to the back room by every one. Each only doing one task at a time, and each only servicing one request, top to bottom, at a time. The service was horrific in so many different ways but I cannot describe how they allowed multiple people to cut me even though it was obvious I was waiting in line. When I received my dish it took 10 minutes while no one was behind me. Later I opened the bag and saw that they gave me a plain bagel, when I ordered an everything bagel, with no egg or bacon, and they served me just a few bits of sausage. I've been coming here since since it was called "Big Apple Bagel" and have not once been disappointed by their bagels. In fact, this place has better bagels than any place I've been to in the city. The bagels are big and fluffy and their cream cheese always tastes fresh. I don't really have much to say aside from the quality of their bagels. Great bagels but they are super stingy man. My wife is in the nearby hospital and I've been getting bagels and sandwiches from here for the past couple days. At first I thought it was just the server who was cheap on the cream cheese but I went back for the second time ordered two bagels and cream cheese and a bacon egg and cheese sandwich I think the owner helped me. When I got to the hospital the cream cheese was very light on both bagels and there was two small pieces of bacon and half an egg in my sandwich. Not surprised that my review isn't the first negative one. It's a strange vibe in the shop. There's no sense of order when you walk in. It's unclear where the line begins and there's a ton of staff behind the counter seemingly not helping anyone. My last visit I witnessed the staff yelling at each other. 1)The food is overpriced and terrible. I got a breakfast sandwich, and boy did I regret it. The fried egg yolks were broken so it was like mushed egg-whites mixed with mushed yolks. Worst fried eggs ever, for $5. I just wanted to go to the counter and be like "REALLY???" It just makes me want to work for these people and cook eggs properly. 2) Also, the service was not only slow, but they were ridiculously rude. Example of rudeness: They have two different prices for cookies, small and large. There was one row of black and white cookies that were huge, and one that was about half the size. My mom and I decided we wanted two smalls instead of splitting one large. So, they charged us the price for 2 larges even though she asked for small, so she said "No, two smalls, not larges." The guy was like "We only have one size." She then pointed to where they have the price difference, and pointed to the different sized cookies that were separated form each other. When they denied both how they listed the prices and organized the cookies, we left without cookies. No one would even speak to her. I honestly think it was one of the worst examples of customer service I've ever seen. If I had acted that way at my job, I would have been fired. Wish I could give a negative five stars. Never have I ever seen such ridiculously rude behavior in my life. I've been shopping here for a decade and will never come back. My son, home on spring break, wanted a bagel. The tiny lot was full so I pulled up to the store and he ran in. A man with his elderly mom, who uses a cane, came out and I smiled and said hi and moved my car back so she could walk out. My mom walked with a walker for 35 years so I couldn't be more respectful. Suddenly, a man ran out of the store, punched my car and screamed at me to get away from the front of his store ! What?!? I pulled back and next thing I know, my son runs out and says the man yelled five times to everyone in the store that I was so rude to park in front of the store. He asked my son if I was his mom and when my son saw him smash on my car my son ran out. He mentioned I was in my fancy car (a rented Volvo). That someone who sells ridiculously overpriced bagels in an upscale neighborhood would be so rude is unbelievable. Lost a good customer and, I hope, many more. read more

If you're too cheap to buy creamers to go, don't make it the customer's bill by charging them as if it's a cup of coffee. Pathetic to charge customers for milk and cream to go. Food and coffee are excellent. Especially the bagels, bialys and I like the not overly sweet cinnamon buns. Also, coffee is nice and hot. The women who work behind the counter are great. Sometimes the service is weird where you might feel a bit ignored but not usually. One big negative are the very over-priced egg sandwiches. If they were outstanding then it's worth it but their version, ham & egg for me, is pedestrian so you feel ripped off. Not customer-friendly. I wish I had a bagel for every time I've gone in the morning only to give up and walk out without buying. The bagels are great, but if there are 4 or so people ahead of you, get ready for a ten + minute wait. Not enough staff. They should triage the line by having someone walk it and ask - "what are you here for? Oh, just want a bagel, let me get that for you." Because anyone ordering anything that involves prep and the line stops dead. Or...just create a space with a selection of bagels and let people throw their $1.10 into the bucket and grab & go. This is one of my favorite bagel places in New York. I always stop by when I am in the area. I usually get a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel or a roll and I have never been disappointed. I have tried some of their bakes goods and I liked their crumb cake. The staff is very attentative. If there is no line I've never had to wait more than 30 seconds until my order is taken. When lines are a tad longer obviously the wait time it a bit longer but that's expected. As for this place having no sense of order, I've never felt that way and quite frankly this is a bagel store I could care less about the place having a sense of order as long as my order is taken and fulfilled quick and to my satisfaction which it always has. read more
