LOVE this place !! Dr.Ruffalo is just awesome you can tell she really does care & Love her patients, I have only had 2 brief conversations with Dr.Claudio and I liked him a lot as well he was very gentle & explained the process of the surgery thoroughly another 1 of my dogs was going to have he too seems to honestly care deeply about his patients. We have 3 dogs & 1 of them had some issues going on with her skin & it was getting worse so it was time for her to see a vet so we could find out what was going on with her, so I did my research on veterinarian offices close to me as I was pretty sure it was a place I was going to be going to often due to the issue going on with my 1 dog & also the fact we do have 3 dogs so I felt confident in what I read about Mt.Plains this was the place for us & I'm so happy to say I was right ! When Dr.Ruffalo first saw our dog with the skin issue she wasn't real sure what exactly it was but did tell us it looked like a rare auto immune disease & she has personally never seen it before in her office so she said first lets see what it is and she started with the least invasive procedure & also the easiest on our pockets she explained it may or may not tell us anything but let's just see & so that's what we did & to ALL of our surprise it did tell us it was exactly what she thought it was so we needed to confirm the diagnosis & to do that we needed to do a biopsy now mind you from the first visit she was talking that we may need to take our dog to a dermatologist to be treated as they may have seen this more often then she did & by time we got to the biopsy she wasn't talking about sending us to the dermatologist any more she said if the biopsy comes back as the same as the first test that she could treat our dog long story short the biopsy came back as the same as the first test our dog has a VERY rare autoimmune disease that will never go away but can be treated with medication & thanks to Dr.Ruffalo our dog looks a million times better then she did the first visit & through out this whole process Dr.Ruffalo had our dogs best interest at hand as well as our Cost never has anyone from this office ever tried to sell us a thing and that I also love & let's be honest in our case they coulda told us if we bought A,B,&C it may help our dogs Situation but not 1 time did they ever try to sell us anything & Dr.Ruffalo coulda just sent us along our way to the dermatologist & let them treat our dog but she didn't she took on the task of treating our dog which again is something she has Never treated in her practice & our dog looks,feels,smells & acts a million times better thanks to Dr.Ruffalo & we are grateful for that & so is our bank account when she mentioned a dermatologist at the first visit I thought wow! talk about speciality & WOW !!there goes our savings acct. Thankfully Dr.Ruffalo was determined to help our dog. Dr.Claudio is also great he did a surgery to remove a tumor on 1 of our other dogs & she came out looking SO MUCH better & I don't even think she has a scar from the stitches he put in.. 1 last thing I want to mention is that this past spring break we had someone set up to watch our 3 dogs in our home while we went on vacation & They backed out on us last minute & I Was so upset & panicked that I started calling all kind of pet sitters & of course no one could do it as they were over booked cause it was spring break which is just about as busy as christmas for Pet sitters & boarding places & I didn't even bother to call Mt.Plains I just knew they were full if I couldn't even find a pet sitter but we had an appointment to take our dog to get stitches removed & I was so upset over the pet sitter backing out on us at the last minute I decided to ask Dr.Ruffalo & told her we had someone (a family friend ) set up to stay at our house & watch the dogs for 10 days 11 nights & they backed out & we can't find ANYONE & She didn't even hesitate she said they were full but she thinks they might be able to do it & she went in the back spoken with some of the vet techs & came back & told us yes they could do it I was so relieved who would be better to keep our pets then their vet who knows them & knows the medication then their Vet so everyone was happy we got to go On a MUCH needed vacation with a piece of mind our 3 dogs were in WONDERFUL hands for 10 days, we missed them dearly & I was certain it was going to be a squeal fest in the office when we picked them up but much to my surprise they acted like they had just saw us I was disappointed that they acted like they didn't even miss us at ALL but thrilled at the same time because that tells me they liked it there & were treated well.. I hope this review helps someone that is looking for a GREAT vets office that really does care About their patients and EVERYONE in the office goes above & beyond to help & they are so friendly .. I've never experienced a less professional veterinary practice in my entire life. My wife and I took our aging dog there and they asked that we first take him for an ultrasound. We were informed that after the ultrasound they would call us and explain the diagnosis and potential treatment. No call. No follow up. After a month of waiting, I called to get clarification. During our conversation, i was spoken over repeatedly, dismissed and finally hung up on. These people have no business treating animals, and they have no business dealing with their human owners. They are careless, obnoxious and entirely unprofessional. If you value your pets, you will be better served by seeing literally ANYONE else. AVOID THIS PRACTICE. read more

Do not take your pet here for anything even remotely serious. My dogs health fell apart in two months, and after numerous visits, cultures and meds my dog passed way because they did not detect that it was cancer. Knowing what I know now, his prognosis was not good, but there were some real things that could have been handled differently. For one thing, the doctor did not truly examine my dog or think to xray him to find out why he began coughing in addition to his surface infections. Turns out, his lungs were collapsing. They sent him home with me that day and he died the same night. I wish I could have at least known what was going on so we could understand how much time we had left, it really hurts. I did not feel like Mount Plaines provided adequate care. They just didn't care to look closely at all, and seemed to be uncomfortable with me as I started to panic that my dog was in serious condition. They don't even call the next day to follow up on your pet, good vets do this. I regret using them after i had to switch vets after I moved. read more

Leaving this business. Poor bedside manner. The doctor doesn't talk through things, just jumps to conclusions without investigating. I accidentally cut my golden doodle while trimming a matted up piece of fur - skin was in there. I felt horrible. Dog didn't yelp when it happened and I didn't even notice I did it until I noticed a small amount of blood on his hair. Called a 24 hour vet in Schaumburg (this happened at 10:30 at night). Described the cut and nature of open wound and vet wasn't affirmative I needed to go. I decided I'd watch the wound and keep it clean- assumed it could heal on its own. 30 hours later when I realized there was too much hair and it seemed to be sticking in the wound so I took him to Dr. Ruffalo. She didn't ask many questions about what happened or who I called, etc. she just told me I should have brought him for care right away and not wait. She said if you got this kind of cut you would have went to see a doctor! No, I wouldn't have, but I could tell she was not happy with me. i asked if it was possible the dog could heal on its own like an animal in the wilderness and got an earful for that comment as well. I was looking for dialogue, a genuine question, but got dressed-down instead. Because of how I was treated, like a dog-abuser, I am taking my business elsewhere. I've never left an animal practice or my own doctor for that matter. I get along well with others. This was a very unusual encounter. I'll give them an honest rating of 4, not 5 stars. Dr. Ruffalo is probably a really intelligent doctor, but her bedside manner did not meet my expectations. read more

I have had nothing but GREAT experiences at Mt Plaines Animal Hospital over the years. My family has had three dogs since I was a kid in the 1980's and ALL of our dogs went to Mt Plaines Hospital for shots and check ups. Presently, we have a small king charles cavalier. He has seen both Dr. Claudiu and Dr. Ruffulo. They are excellent vets, who truly care about the animals they treat. Dr. Claudiu will often call our house a day or two after he has seen my dog to check up on him. I have recommended Mt Plaines Animal Hospital to a lot of my friends and none of them have ever had a bad thing to say about their vet experience. We've been going to this office for vet care and kenneling for at over 10 years for cats and dogs. We love Dr Ruffalo, Dr Claudio, and Dr Gadberry. Usually our pets are in great health and only visit for routine care, but when my cat had cancer her surgeries went well. They helped us coordinate moving two pets to Europe and it went great. We use the kennel for cats and dogs. I'd rather kennel my dog at home, but that's not a good fit for his personality. He is always happy to go and doesn't seem at all upset when he returns home. The cat seems fine, too. We recently euthanized a beloved dog and every staff member greated us with hugs and were very compasionate through the process. I highly recommend Mt Plaines! read more

We have been going taking our cats to Mount Plaines for about 22 years. If I had written this review years ago, it would have been a 5 star review because for a long time, our pets had good care and no problems. However, the past 5 years or so, things have gone down hill. We had a cat that was sick and losing weight and they could never figure out what was wrong with her. They kept suggesting that she needed an xray but then when we would bring her in, the equipment was never working. When it was time for her final appointment, they put us off an extra day because they had a busy schedule. Ok, I guess. A couple of years later, another one of our elderly cats had a stroke. Over the weekend, his condition had become very bad and we sadly waited for Monday so we could take him in to end the suffering. They wouldn't take us anytime that Monday. We were willing to come early or go late and nope...not possible. We ended up calling around and took him to a vet that we had never been to before for his final visit. We should have never gone back to Mt. Plaines after that, but all the years we were with them convinced us to keep going. Fast forward to this weekend. We had an appointment to bring one of our cats in. She is not an easy cat to bring to the vet. We fought with her, got scratched, got her into the carrier, took her to Mount Plaines...and then receptionist says "It doesn't look like your appointment was recorded. You'll have to come back. We don't like to take difficult cats on the weekends anyway, so oopsy, you'll have to come back on some other day." No...we will never be back. Not on any other day. The silver lining in this is that we will probably find a much better vet as a result. read more

We recently switched from another nearby vet and we could not be happier. The staff has been amazing during regularly scheduled visits, but also a couple urgent visits we required. In one instance, I had to bring my dog in when I also had my infant with me. I called ahead and they fit me into their busy day, but also had a staff member waiting for me to arrive so they could bring my dog in while I got my child out of the car, etc. Things like that are not technically their jobs but they go the extra mile! And people with pets should appreciate that! read more

I lived in Mt Prospect a few years ago and had nothing but wonderful experiences with this vet. They were so kind when I had to put my older cat to sleep and were a tremendous help with my new kitten. When he got sick after only having him a few weeks and the emergency vet basically told me it was hopeless and it was a rare condition...my vet at Mt Plaines called me the next day and calmly told me she disagreed and thought it was only a respiratory infection. Needless to say, 8 years and 20 lbs later...she was right. I loved that I could call to check on him and the front desk new immediately which cat he was and would tell me if he was out playing, and just generally chat about him. I've since moved to the city, and every time I go to my current vet I miss Mt Plaines and wish they were closer...and half consider making the drive! read more

I used to work at Mount Plaines when I was in high school. I have continued to take my animals to their facility. I am very pleased with the care I receive, and with the care I see the veterinarians and office staff providing to other families and pets. They have convenient office hours and are able to see animals rather quickly if you need it. They send reminder cards about vaccines which is very helpful for us busy working folk. They recently did some facility improvements and the place looks really nice and clean. New floors, new front desk, etc. Their fees are reasonable for the area and their boarding fees are the lowest around. Dr. Ruffolo and Dr. Claudio really care about the animals and tell things to you straight, while explaining the reasoning or needs behind what they are sharing with you. I know many families who are pleased with the service they and their pets receive, and I am one of those families too. read more

A friend of mine recommended Mt plaines to me. She said she has been taking her dogs and cats there for years. I decided to take my dog who was not feeling well there. Dr. Claudio did a great job in explaining what could be causing the infection. He was so nice and never tried to do unnecessary tests. He prescribed some antibiotics and pain medication for my dog first. He stated that if it didnt get better we can run some blood tests. My dog started getting better and I love the fact that Dr. Claudio called me the next day to see how my dog was doing. Great vets and awesome staff. Nothing to complain about the hospital service, but the boarding service is questionable. My dog hates going in to this place every since he was boarded for few days over one weekend. Every time I visit, I hear constant dog barking in the background. I suspect it is not a good environment for a dog to be boarded for more than a day. read more

My dogs have been patients with Mount Plaines for several years. I called and scheduled an appointment for 6/9/2020 at Mt. Plaines animal hospital for an anal gland extraction for my dog. My dog has had this procedure done there before. When I arrived, a staff member met me at the door to take My dog in for her appointment. Due to Covid-19 safety precautions, I was not allowed in the hospital and I waited in my car. The Dr. called me and told me She was done and that my dog received a 50 ml injection. I was taken by surprise, shocked, and panicked. I asked what injection did you give her? She said she gave her a Cytopoint Injection. I said that's not why she was there. She never has received that injection. I explained that I scheduled an appointment to have her anal glad extracted that's all. I was extremely upset and the Dr. who administered the injection and the office staff never apologized for this mistake. This is a huge mistake from Mount Plaines animal hospital. They were negligent and did not demonstrate optimal care for my dog. They caused my dog unnecessary discomfort and pain and put her health at risk due to their carelessness. My dog currently takes several different medications and they put her at risk for drug interactions. Cytopoint remains in a dogs system for several weeks. Pet owners beware. Be careful at this animal hospital and make sure the service/treatment your pets are receiving are the correct ones. read more

In late 1999 or early 2010 I brought my cat in on a Friday because I noticed she had difficulty getting into her litter box. I left her there and was told I'd receive a call after they examined her. I thought I'd her from them on Saturday. The weekend passed and I heard nothing so on Monday I called them. When I told the receptionist I was calling about my cat, I was asked to hold. A women picked up the phone and I assume it was Dr Ruffalo and was bluntly told my precious friend had died.....I said WHAT? and was offered no explanation, nor any sign of compassion. Shortly after, I was presented a bill for $277.00 and unfortunately paid it. To my knowledge, since it was the weekend, I doubt any examination or care was given to my friend! I've used Mount Plaines for many years under previous ownership and was always shown compassion, even received Sympathy Cards when a pet passed on. No card from the current owner and no explanation as to what occurred. Also, I had to call them to find out what was going on! Tomorrow I have to take my current pet to the vet and she definitely isn't going to Mount Plaines!!!!!!! As I said, all I got from them was a bill for $277.00 for a weekend stay over for what I don't know.....maybe room & board! read more

We've been taking our pets to Mount Plaines for several years, and we are very satisfied with the care our animals receive, as well as with the cost of services. Upon entering Mount Plaines, the front desk receptionist is always very busy, yet she's always organized and pleasant. The wait time to see a Dr. is never very long. Whether our pets are seen by Dr. Claudio or Dr. Ruffalo, they receive a thorough exam. Afterwards, either vet gives a detailed explanation of the animal's health, and they answer any/all questions without the impression of being rushed. I really appreciate that! Another thing I really appreciate is the fact that the vets give an estimate of any subsequent follow-up care that is recommended. I never feel as though the vets are trying to sell services, but rather they're giving recommendations for what is truly needed for the health of the animal. In the last year or two, we've also used boarding services at Mt. Plaines, and have also been very satisfied. I think it's a good sign that neither of our dogs feel overly anxious when we arrive at Mt. Plaines. read more

Mount Plaines Animal Hospital has provided care for our dogs for the past 20 years. I cannot say enough about Drs. Ruffalo and Strugariu. A little more than 2 years ago one of our dogs was diagnosed with cancer; Mt Plaines referred us to a specialty veterinary clinic, and our dog had a tumor removed. We were lucky that our dog stayed healthy and active for 2 years after that, and Dr. Strugariu was very kind and diligent in following up with us regarding our dog's health. Ultimately, when we had to make the decision to euthanize our dog, Dr. Strugariu and the rest of the staff we interacted with were empathetic, caring, and helpful. read more

I recently moved to Mt Prospect and started taking my dogs to Mt Plaines, one is a puppy and the other a senior. Unfortunately shortly after moving, my senior dog fell ill and it turns out she had a big mass, heart issues, and she seemed to be shutting down. Dr Ruffalo has been wonderful to deal with but a special call out for Dr. Strugariu. It turns out I had to take my dog for her final appt and Dr. Strugariu was extremely warm and comforting. He made a terrible experience as good as it could possibly be. I am happy to have found Mount Plaines and will be a long time customer. read more

I have had a wonderful relationship with Mt Plaines over the past 12 years that I have been bringing our two dogs there. Dr Ruffalo, Dr. Claudio, Sandy, Heidi, Janet and Doreen have treated my pooches as their own. The docs always called us at home to check in on they were doing/responding to a drug if they were ill. We recently had to put them down, but they lived long lives of 15 years, and I'm sure it was do to my love and their caring. When we adopt more dogs in the future, we will be bringing them here. I brought a stray kitten there that lived outside my house. Dr. kim ruffalo instantly said the cat had neurological problems and that it should be put to sleep. I wanted to weight my options so I asked her how much it would cost to put the cat down she said "don't worry about it". 5 days later I get a bill for $100, they didn't do jack, it seemed like kim ruffolo didn't even want to waste her time on the cat and she just wanted to put it to sleep without testing the cat. You don't kill a customers cat and tell them to "not worry about it", then send them a bill for $100. I will disputing this bill to the utmost. Don't bring your animals here, the other vets are idiots and will misdiagnose your animal to get more money, they've done it to me with my other animals. They well tell you one thing, then send you a bill in the mail that you won't expect. TERRIBLE VET OFFICE AND A RIPOFF. read more

Even when we had to have one of our dogs put down they treated everybody with the upmost respect. Dr. Ruffalo is great. She is very understanding and patient. She owns the practice and her prices are reasonable. However, my family and I would never see Dr. Claudio again. He did not diagnose my dog correctly , and did not do appropriate tests after we asked for them. He just prescribed pain pills and sent us off. During explaining when to give my dog the pain pills, it was very hard to follow him. We took her home, and she ended up dying the next day. I would not trust him with anything. He could have done more, and maybe could have saved her life. He doesn't seem very warm and understanding, as you should be with animals. He doesn't seem to like what he does at all. I would recommend Dr. Ruffalo, but definitely not Dr. Claudio. read more

We are very happy with the care our dog gets from Dr. Ruffolo and Dr. Strugariu! They always answer all of our questions and take time with our dog. We also boarded our dog here for a week and the care he got was excellent! We recently moved out of state and tried another vet but didn't come close to being as good as Mt. Plaines. We just had our beloved Q put down. It was the most difficult thing I've ever been through in my life. Dr. Claudio was kind, compassionate, patient ... and the 2 attendants and the doc all stayed with us the entire time she was passing. I cannot express my gratitude enough for all that they have done for us. We will never go to a different vet as long as I have a say in it... Dr. Claudio, Dr. Ruffaulo, and the staff... thank you from the bottom of my heart. I can't begin to imagine how many euthanasia's you must have to witness. We were recommended about a year ago and I am so sad that I didn't know about this office sooner. Having had dogs my entire life I have many experiences with vets. This hospital is without a doubt the BEST we have ever known. They are not only compassionate and understanding towards your pet, but equally caring to the pets owner and always so accommodating. Not all about money like so many others are! Dr. Claudiu is truly a gift. I cannot recommend this office enough and will never trust another Doctor. I have had Dr Ruffolo as our vet since about 1994. If that isn't enough to tell you how fantastic this animal hospital is then read on. I have adopted many cats in the past 18 years and they have all been a patient of Dr Ruffolo and now that we have also adopted 2 dogs they are now her patients as well. She is highly knowledgeable, tremendously compassionate, and patient with both her patients and their people. The staff is lovely as well. Sandy and Heidi are beautiful people who truly care about their patients. The facility is a good 30 minute drive for us and there are many vets in-between but we continue to go to this animal hospital because they are that good. read more

When my dog got sick, the vet I'd been taking my dogs to for 15 years dropped the ball. I took my dog, who had always been very healthy, to Mount Plaines for a second opinion. Dr. Ruffolo was very patient and thorough with my dog. She followed up her exams of my sick dog by calling me personally every few days. She and her staff were very helpful when we discovered our beloved dog had cancer. Their help, which was way beyond the normal services of their practice, allowed my dog to participate in a study for her breed and I'm very grateful for that. If I ever had any questions or concerns I could call any time and if they weren't available they always called back, sometimes after business hours. I never felt rushed through. They even have a train table and books to keep the kids entertained. I don't know why anyone would leave with unanswered questions. Ask them!
