I've stayed here over the last 20 years or longer, and while I do miss the original owners, (and have seen some innkeepers come and go since), I have to say I really like the new owners that recently took over a few weeks ago! This place has been my home away from home over the years when I visit family in the area! It's warm and comforting, clean and cozy, and beautiful! And bonus they are still dog friendly! I love this bed and breakfast, it's in a great location just half a mile from the town where you can go to shops and get good food. Also, they cook you breakfast here and it's amazing. The owners, Kris and David, are really sweet and accommodating to my vegan diet when it comes to breakfast!! I haven't been to a hotel/b&b that's ever done that for me... It's very quaint here but that's the point of making it seem as historical as it is. I love the atmosphere and how beautiful everything is, I'm surrounded by lush trees, lakes, hikes, and you can even see the gorgeous Mountain!! I am over the moon about Mount Shasta Ranch Bed and Breakfast!! The new owners Kris & David go above and beyond in making you feel like family in their warm and inviting B&B. The rooms are clean and spacious and beautifully decorated with antiques and period pieces. It is incredibly charming and truly gives you the feel of an authentic 1920's Inn. The food was exquisite. I could write an entire paragraph on Kris' heavenly breakfast! Fresh cut fruit, homemade blueberry chia pudding and plenty of eggs with bacon and sausage. And of course endless coffee and an assortment of tea and juice. One more bite would've rendered me useless for the day which you wouldn't want as the town of Mt. Shasta is simply enchanting. There is of course the majestic Mt. Shasta itself which is perfectly visible from the B&B. But just minutes away you'll find yourself immersed in small town charm with plenty of fascinating specialty shops. First the good: it's basically like a huge old house, very comfortable and well-furnished, with very nice common areas and guest rooms. The grounds are large, though trying to find the place at night can be, well, trying. Unlimited 24/7 cookies and wine are a memorable touch. Breakfast is more than satisfying, with attentive, devoted staff. And the bad: the out-of-control guest dogs. Unlike every decent hotel that accepts pets, the Shasta Starr doesn't seem to have any policies about the size of dogs they accept, or requirements that they be kept in control and leashed. My 12-year-old 25-pound lame, always-leashed Miniature Australian Shepherd was confronted by two aggressive dogs in my one-day stay: the first, a 40-50 pound full-size Australian Shepherd unleashed in the shared living room, who went into full-on intimidation mode, viciously snapping at my dog because her owner tried to pet my dog, having to be dragged away by her owner. Forgiveable, I guess, no damage done. But the kicker was the next day, trying to walk my dog when a 40-50 pound Pit Bull, off-leash, comes running joyfully up at full-speed to "play" with my dog, though I would use a different four-letter word. I yelled immediately at the owner to get over and get his dog under control, but it was a distressing 20 seconds for me and my dog: she was being jumped on by a much larger, tougher, heavier dog and began snapping at the Pit Bull in a desperate move to back it off. At any moment the Pit Bull could have decided to teach my crippled little dog who's boss with a violent response. Ten years since I had a bad dog on dog incident, and twice in 12 hours at the Shasta Starr. They had better wise up, talk to a lawyer maybe, and get a responsible, reasonable dog policy in place like every professionally-run hotel has. read more

10/10 would stay again. The breakfast is kiiilllllerrrr. We were stuffed up with the first course but they keep the deliciousness rolling out in a way you can quite expect your first stay. Plan to NEED your apatite at breakfast! My group went on a hearty nature walk to the Falls after bfast and were nourished until the late afternoon! (THANKS Kris for the recommendation AND FUEL!) The building is so unique - with lots of big historic pieces and small adornments that really make the place shine! The atmosphere is a Luxury Cabin and retains much of the personality from its Glory Days. The care given to the facilities by the owners is exceptionally devout. They have been restoring aspects to further align with the building's roots. Another exceptional detail of my stay: The View of Mt. Shasta from our room!!! My group stayed in rooms 204 and 205 and enjoyed an quiet evening looking at Mt Shasta from our private sitting areas. Additionally, town is mere minutes away! One fine winter's day, when deep layers of snow wrapped their way around the slopes of Mount Shasta and a January sun shone brightly over the valley below, a passionate parrot arrived for a one night's stay at the Ranch. This wasn't your ordinary, run-of-the-mill ranch, by any means. Neither was this your ordinary kind of parrot. He was passionate: about life, about traveling, about Northern California, and about - well, bed-and-breakfasts. He loved to find cool, outside-the-box places to stay when he was on the road. You know, to rest your wings, hang out in an interesting place with spacious rooms, talk to kind-hearted people, enjoy hearty breakfasts, and relax in a comfortable and quiet setting where you can shake off the road dust, catch your breath, get a decent shower, and return to the rigors of the journey. That's why the parrot kept returning to Mount Shasta Ranch, because it was one of his favorite B&Bs of all time, and because of Ahab. Ahab? Yes, Ahab the beautiful talking bird who ran the ranch (with a little help from his friend, Bill) and always welcomed guests with an endless round of "hellos" and (sometimes) "praise the Lord's" and other interesting bird calls and vocalizations. He also loved the enormous fireplace in the living/common room, the dining room and kitchen, the baked goods, the tea and coffee, the complimentary Californian wine, the 2-course breakfasts, and the under $100 rooms in the carriage house. And of course there was the mountain - Shasta - with its subalpine meadows and volcanic buttes and fluffy, fresh snows and endless facets to its personality, whether it be viewed at sunrise, or clouded in storm, or shining in the full light of a summer's moon. There's a lot in life to be passionate about, thought the parrot. "Praise the Lord!" said Ahab. And the parrot looked back, before leaving the ranch for a long day's drive ahead, and most heartily agreed. Moral: Don't leave your passions at home when you hit the road. Follow them wherever they might lead, and if you're lucky, you'll end up at a place like this for a night, or more. Hard to argue with that! read more

We had a wonderful stay and were treated very well at this historic B&B in Mount Shasta. Traveling with my 4 horses, I was having a hard time finding a place to "bed down" in the area, which surprised me. I called another B&B, which was full and they suggested I call here. My son and I stayed in a big room that felt like home, above the carriage house. Shared bathrooms down the hall with the other guests were quaint and antique. It was soooo comfy! We were also treated to complimentary wine, cake, and tea, which was lovely before bed. Breakfast was ok - a cheese omelete with a croissant, good coffee, juice, and a fruit plate (slice of pineapple and a couple of grapes). The Mount Shasta Inn was originally the main ranch of a race horse breeding facility and the heart of 1700 acres of activity. We were lucky that Bill was so kind to us - he called his neighbor and she allowed us to stash the horses in her round pen across the street from our window. The views of Mount Shasta from the big front porch are stunning. Would surely stay here again. We felt like family and had a much needed peaceful rest at a very reasonable price - under $90 for two people. read more

Dirty, dingy place, with horrible customer service!!! It was the dirtiest place we have ever stayed, even compared to a camp in Mexico. We paid $400 per night and spent 45 minutes trying to clean the shower before we used it, because it was so dirty. The carpet was absolutely filthy, there was dirt everywhere. We tried to book another place when we realized how horrible it was but it was summer in Mount Shasta and we could not find anything else. We stayed in the two bedroom, one bathroom unit and the owners put a memory foam cushion on the pull out bed but then they left the bed out everyday in the middle of the living room because they did not want to take the pad off and put it back on for us so we had an open sleeper sofa in the middle of the main room. Chris is one of those business owners who makes you feel bad you are inconveniencing her by giving her your business. We referred to her a "pinchy" but she made the vacation stressful. One person in our group had a 5 minute breakfast because she refused to serve us at the time we requested. She is rude and thinks that a chocolate chip cookie and white robe, a few that looked like they were still dirty from prior guests, will make people forget the entire property is dirty and unkempt, the food is not very good, and she makes her quests feel like they are imposing on her. Her husband, Dave, is slightly better. If we needed something, we asked him but he also has a knack for mentioning that "This place is just so much work," right after you ask for another cup of coffee, that you feel bad. The food was progressively worse, the last day was a mostly raw egg, plopped on a dry tortilla with a layer of beans. The tap water was horrible and there was a bottled water container but we noticed ants in the water. When we uncovered the bottled water container, there was a film on the surface of the water. We paid $400 per night, the same price we would have paid for a cabin at Mount Shasta Resort but we spent three days fighting ants, not using all the space we paid for because it was so dirty, and hoping the toddler we had with us did not get sick from the dirty water. read more

Just leaving Mt Shasta after a lovely stay at the ranch. I will try and keep this brief. Owner - Tim, sweet man who made us feel very welcome, cooks a great breakfast and loves basketball. Location- Easy to find, great view of mountain, quiet, on the way to the lake. Room- Large, clean and very comfortable. Old buildings but very well looked after. Price- we stayed in #5 in the carriage house, $80, very reasonable. Large kitchen, open wine and hot drinks, table tennis, pool table, parrot. Dogs welcome too. Amazing place, thank you. read more

Stayed here recently on a trip from Oakland to Portland and LOVED it. I normally drive straight through and was looking for a place to stay that was a step above a motel. This is not the fanciest place, but everything is well cared for, clean, and spacious. Really enjoyed the common room with couches and fireplace and all of the kitschy decorations all over the place. Wine, hot drinks, snacks available all day/evening. Pet friendly - I enjoyed walking my dog around the area with a clear view of Mount Shasta. Free wifi and a TV in the main house (also TVs in the rooms, which I didn't use). Everyone there was friendly and the rates were really affordable. Stayed in the carriage house (with a shared bath) and was very comfortable. Breakfast was coffee/tea, juice, fruit, croissant, eggs, potatoes. Kind of feels like you're at someone's house, and I enjoyed that. I will definitely stay here again. One note: A friend who came along who is highly sensitive to chemicals/scents had a difficult time here. read more

Shasta Starr Ranch, Stayed in the North/Eastern Room, very roomy and quaint, nice bath and shower. with some nice homey touches to the décor. They're currently finishing up some respectful remodelling, just making the place better. grabbed a picture before it was served. Outstanding eggs with feta cheese & spinach cooked to perfection. Don't get me started on the hot crisp on the outside hash browns & bacon or container of berry preserves on the table. Beyond awesome! This is my favorite bed-and-breakfast of all time. The ambiance is perfect! Huge picture windows that look out on majestic snow peaked Mount Shasta. In the shared living area is a gorgeous rustic rock fireplace with a large but very cozy sitting area in front of the fire. The property is surrounded by pine trees, nature, and it's five minutes from a rushing river. If you snow ski or snowboard Mount Shasta ski area is a 5 to 7 minute drive. The breakfast is a mouth watering 3 courses! Everything was mouth watering delicious! The mattresses are new and comfy and the bedding is new and fresh. It was immaculately clean. Kris & David and their sweet Cockapoo Cork are the perfect hosts and treated me like a celebrated guest. It was such a special visit! I want to go back soon! read more

I have stayed at the Mt. Shasta Ranch bed and breakfast for a long time over many years. I had not stayed for a couple years because of Covid but I just stayed this summer and I was delighted to see that David and Kris have not only maintained the level of service, but actually have enhanced it. The rooms are continue to be lovely and they are adding wonderful vintage beds abd furniture with beautifully upgraded bathrooms. Their hospitality is delightful and the breakfasts are really out of this world. I had a perfect vegetable egg soufflé!! So i am delighted that they made it through Covid and are here to offer a remarkable retreat for travelers in Mt. Shasta. read more

The Shasta Starr Ranch Bed and Breakfast was just a delight to stay at. A high school friend and I met there for the weekend to catch up and the atmosphere was so warm and pleasant. The service was great too. We had plenty of space to relax and talk. We walked on some of the trails near the bed and breakfast too. We even had some pleasant conversations with the nice couple that takes care of the grounds there. The rooms were clean and comfortable. I slept very comfortably. The rooms were also very spacious. There is an air of luxury while staying at this old beautiful Ranch home. I highly recommend! I am planning on bringing my wife back here in the future. This is one of my favorite places in the world. It has a classic old fashion cozy ranch-style feel. The owners are absolutely wonderful and have done a fantastic job at preserving the history of the amazing Ranch. My boyfriend and I stayed here for a couple of nights and had an amazing stay! We got engaged up at Castle Lake and when we got back to the Ranch the owners made us a special dessert and pulled out the most beautiful vintage 20s champagne glasses for us to celebrate with. What a wonderful discovery! The house was beautiful and in excellent condition, making us feel as if we were actually going back in time. Kris and David were not only incredibly friendly, helpful, welcoming and accommodating but made us feel as if they were already friends. Before I begin, I would like to preface by saying this was my first ever experience staying at a Bed and Breakfast. After my overwhelmingly positive experience here however, I'm not sure I could stay another night at a commercial hotel ever again. My girlfriend and I visited 'The Ranch' for a total of three nights but were blown away right out of the gate. It was a bit cold outside, and we were staying in a separate unit from the main house. Prior to our arrival however, the owners started the fireplace in the living area and turned on the heater in our room. Then, before we even had the opportunity to unpack, Kris came out in the pouring rain to offer us a plate of freshly baked cookies. WOW! The breakfast was phenomenal as well. It was served in courses, much like a restaurant, but still had that comforting home-cooked style that really made us feel like family. From my discussion with the owners, it appears they only recently purchased the Ranch. From our stay however, you could be fooled to think they've been doing it their whole life. There are very few destinations that offer such genuine hospitality as the Mount Shasta Ranch, and if you are looking for a warm and welcoming stay while visiting the Mount Shasta area, there is simply no better alternative. read more

We had a wonderful 4-day weekend!! We were treated extremely well by Naomi and Adam. The accommodations were great!

When my wife and I were looking for B & B's in the area we chose Mount Shasta Ranch based on the previous reviews. Our experience was not a good one and I'll go into that in a minute. I searched out the reviews again upon arriving home and realized that the reviewers all stayed in the carriage house. Unfortunately, we were in the main house which is old and tired and should be shut down for a complete renovation. It looked as if the previous owners put very little into the building. The bedroom was large and spacious as was the bathroom. That's where the accolades end. The flooring on the bathroom was dated 4 x 4 linoleum tile. There were about six tiles chipped on the corners exposing the sub flooring under neath. The toilet was an antique toilet that had to be flushed by pulling on a ball and chain. That in itself was not bad but when the ball and chain are located below the tank about nine inches from the ground then that's bad. You end up sticking your nose in the toilet or the garbage can next to the toilet to flush. Not only that, one quick pull wouldn't suffice. The wall paper was starting to peel away in several spots. When my wife went to open the vanity cabinet to retrieve the hair dryer, the door fell off. I tried turning on the fan in the bathroom and one could clearly sense that the fan was not operating properly as the sound of scraping metal was very apparent. Now for the bedroom. The safety lock on the door wouldn't lock. It was evidently not aligned. There was a tv cable coming out of the ceiling on one corner, then hung down and dragged over to the tv located near the window. The blinds on the window could not be controlled and left in the open position. You could raise the blinds but they were locked in the open position as there was no cord to make any adjustments. The wall in the bedroom adjacent to the window was in need of some new sheet rock and a fresh coat of paint. Now for the dining area. You could tell that 30 years ago, this was probably the place to stay. The dining area was huge and could accommodate at least two or three dozen guests. Yesterday morning there were only three of us, my wife and myself and a traveler from Europe. Ashley, the original owner's grand daughter did a pretty good job with breakfast. However, the flower arrangements should all have been replaced with fresh flowers or at least the water in the arrangements should have been changed. Ours was changed recently so that our dried flowers could at leas have access to fresh water, but the other arrangements on the other tables were soaking in yellow brown water. My coffee cup was chipped and should have been discarded. I did have an opportunity to check out the other rooms on our floor and the bedrooms looked ok. I didn't have time to scrutinize them like ours. We had stayed with friends the day before and they had actually given the local Best Western very good ratings. We noticed that hot breakfasts are part of the deal at Best Western. I would recommend that anyone visiting the area should not book a room in the main building. Based on the other reviews of this place, I guess the carriage house is much more contemporary. Not sure why we weren't given one of those rooms because the cost of our room was $135. I would recommend McCloud Hotel which is part of the Unique Inns group. We stayed at Carter House in Eureka and it was absolutely 5 star. I can only assume the other B & B's or Inns that are part of that group are the same. Good luck to the new owner. You have lots to do to the main house before any of the rooms should be rented out. read more

What a shame!!! After changing hands barely a month ago, Mt. Shasta Ranch, now Mt. Shasta Starr Ranch, has rushed downhill faster than an avalanche on the nearby slopes. The new owners are astonishing, in the worst possible sense. I was recently part of a group that for years has taken over the Ranch for an annual event each summer. This year under the new owners, we were treated horribly. The food was shockingly awful; and service was virtually non-existent, plus there were exorbitant changes for any additional assistance. Management was rarely on premises, so security was completely lacking thereby putting personal possessions and, particularly, expensive sports equipment at risk. Based on my prior personal experience -- before the change in management -- I had recommended the Ranch for some visitors we were unable to accommodate at our home. I told them that the place was funky, but charming, and that the breakfasts were delicious. Our friends reported quite a different experience. They found that the help was, frankly, both slovenly and surly, and their Easter breakfast consisted almost exclusively of a hardboiled egg dyed green. I thought they were exaggerating until I recently replicated their dismal experience. So, if you are looking for a nice place to stay in Mt. Shasta, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more

My GF and I were on a CA trek and particularly enjoying Mt Shasta, but had not found the place we really wanted to make our base, when I found this gem under B&Bs on a trip advising iPhone app. We stayed in the cottage (formerly the ranch hands house when the place was a working racehorse ranch) and loved it so much we stayed 6 nights! It is so comfortable with 2 bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a wonderfully roomy & relaxing living room with a wood burning stove / fireplace that we never experienced the fireplace in the main building most speak of here (although it looks wonderful with all the antique furnishings). The owner, Bill, is a rather distinguished gentleman & couldn't be more friendly & helpful, and the ambiance sitting on the front porch of the main house with Mt Shasta towering to the front east is just completely spellbinding. If you want to explore alpine rivers for rock-hunting or sightseeing, they are just down the road, as is beautiful Lake Siskiyou. Bill happily made us oatmeal as requested for breakfast, along with all the amenities in his lovely dining room. I can't think of a place I would rather return to on the entire 5300 mile month long trip than this one...we are booking this for an entire week again & learning to fly fish up here ~ for us it's paradise! We have returned home from our magical weekend at the Shasta Star Ranch - and I felt inclined to reach out to tell them and in so doing, telling you. We threw my father's 75th birthday weekend extravaganza with 65 family members & friends... And what a beautiful setting that made us feel at home away from home with a bonus - the bonuses? The grounds, the games to be had on them, the feeling that is in the property - what a special place. And to the hosts/grounds managers - Jody and Renee... Hats off! They were gracious, tenacious, kind, tireless and joy-filled. They played a huge part in our making this weekend the fantabulous celebration for my father that it was. We are incredibly grateful. Definitely worth a visit if you're traveling through Mount Shasta and want to treat yourself! the place is extraordinary. it has a nice common room with comfortable couches and a real fireplaces. the bedrooms are spacious and ours had a great view over the mountains. A wonderful time was had for all 10 of our family members once again! Not surprising as we have made it a regular part of our vacations to stay at this unique, quaint historic home. Whether it is shooting pool, playing ping-pong, strategizing in a game of chess or simply sitting back on the wide front porch to gaze at the beauty of nearby Mount Shasta, this place is a must for all who enjoy memorable B&B experiences. Breakfast cuisine is served each morning and the serving staff truly understand what hospitable service really means. The host team led by Kachina and Renae is very accommodating and quite skilled at anticipating your every need. I highly recommend the experience of staying at Mount Shasta Bed & Breakfast. This place is so lovely and I had a smile on my face my entire stay. The main house as well as the carriage house is fantastic place to meet new and exciting people. The entire staff are so sweet, there is a parrot that will keep you laughing through breakfast, and you can watch the sun set and rise on the face of Mt Shasta on a lovely stroll past the neighboring farms. I usually just drive through but this bed and breakfast has changed my travel plans permanently. I will be recommending this cozy abode for years to come. read more

Just come here! It is a great place!. You'll have a great time!. I've been coming to "The Ranch" for about 20 years- through three different owners. The new owners, Dave and Kris (since Fall 2018) are great and have restored the very comfortable, personable, homey atmosphere that is the Ranch tradition. Breakfast is home-cooked, awesome and very satisfying. No problem with accommodating allergies/dietary restrictions. There is a nice range of accommodations - from cozy, well-appointed rooms in the main house to comfortable rooms in the carriage house out back - shared bathrooms and kitchen and better price (some with nice views of Mt. Shasta). Kick back on the big porch and watch Alpenglow on Mt Shasta at sunset. If you are looking for an easy, comfortable, sincerely-friendly place to stay in the Mt. My partner and I stayed here the night before we climbed Shasta as a way to spoil ourselves before enduring a bit of hardship. Spoiled we were! The innkeeper Naomi? Was very kind and welcoming. The property was gorgeous and the bed was comfy. Breakfast in the morning was super tasty! Fresh pineapple pancakes with sausage and fresh fruit. Would 10/10 stay there again. read more

My husband & I had stayed here before & booked a room 2+ months in advance. We received a confirmation via email. When we arrived, after a 6+ hour drive, the proprietor told us that there was a mistake & the room had been double-booked. The other people got there 10 minutes before we did, so they got the room. We were given the choice to take a poorer quality room in an out building with a shared bath. We told her that was not acceptable. She called around & finally got us a room at the Best Western that backed to I-5 & without free breakfast. She did refund our money as the room was pre-paid. I feel that we should have been asked to come for breakfast as we are ending up paying more for a room & breakfast. We will not be staying with them again, as this left a bad taste in our mouths. read more
