A few months ago I dropped my car off for a diagnostic due to the engine shaking and the car needing to be repaired. I left the car overnight for 2 days only to hear back with no updates. When I was able to connect with them I was told they were dumbfounded and couldn't figure out what was causing the shaking. After taking it for 30 minutes to another auto shop, I was told the tires each had 18psi instead of 30psi, which helped reduce the shaking. I also needed a full axel replacement, which I scheduled and had done two weeks later. The car now works great. I don't think that over the course of the 2 days my car was left with Mt. Tam that it was ever looked at as the axel very clearly needed to be replaced. I think they were too busy at the time to take it on, but I don't recommend leaving your car for an overnight diagnosis. read more

I'm sitting here with Christmas two days away, no presents purchased, six-months pregnant with a toddler and laundry to do and I'm making TIME to write these guys a review! You should know, the below service was received EVEN THOUGH Rob knew I was leaving town and would not be a repeat customer. So really consider how this speaks to the CHARACTER of these guys that they treated me like this!!! I had spent hundreds of dollars over at Marin Automotive for them to hmmmm and haaawwww over what could possibly be going on with my not-working passenger headlight. They wanted me to come back in for a third ($200) visit for them to continue to "investigate". I was sent there by an auto body shop (a way longer story) at the "Favor" of the owner - he didn't know me but pulled that card on Rob to get him to see me. I show up at 3:00 on a Friday, Rob's arm deep in a VW Bug, and he makes the time to not only figure out what is going on but stayed late to fix it. It involved ripping the bumper off all to fix a rotten ballast on my light. Part was $500 and labor $140. I was $400 in with Marin Automotive and they still had no idea what to do - Rob got in, got to business, kept a quirk and fun attitude about the whole thing and took care of me. He then sent me on my way late on a Friday night and knew he would not get a lick of repeat business since my vehicle and I were (and have) moved across the country. Had we remained in Marin, this shop would have a lifetime customer. Take your vehicles here. You can't find character like this often. This is my second review of Mt Tam Motors. I was first to review on Google and Yelp, an I have been their loudest cheerleader, but my experience changed. I think that the guys are great at diagnostics, but I have complaints about customer service. I was a customer for 10 years with about 5 cars, and I think they either started to take me for granted or they did not want to deal with my old car because the issues were not easy. I waited for month for an update on my Jeep after I had it towed to them, but never got an update. I called them and they said they they did no have my phone number, and I was flabbergasted. I've been a customer for 10 years and you always have had my phone number. . .wtf? In that month they had done all this work investigating my brake lines that I did not authorize. I ended up paying them $1000 to "investigate" my drum brakes lines whe I could have upgraded the entire brake system for less money. The kicker is that when I went pick up my beloved classic Jeep, Chris told me that the "only good thing about my Jeep was the tires" I was completely offended. They are extremely capable mechanics, but I just can't spend $1000 bucks for nothing because they were not able to communicate with me in a timely manner. read more

How does one make a 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo feel like a new car ? Take it to Paul and Rob at Mount Tam Motors, and let them replace your brakes, ... that's how. I brought my car in to Paul (the owner) just after 9am, and I had my car back running better than ever by 4:30pm -- maybe I was the exeception to the rule that it all happened over a period of hours, but they certainly made me feel like an exception. They treated my "Point A to Point B" car (and me) very well. It's been a while since I've written a review, and dropping off to and picking up from Mount Tam Motors deserves more than just a simple review of 5 out of 5. Mount Tam Motors is located near the canal, off of Medway Road and Francisco Blvd. in San Rafael, and not far from the old Seafood Peddler (now Terrapin Crossings Rest/Bar) at: 49 Medway, San Rafael, CA 94901 - phone number: (415) 455-9113 The other nice thing was that Enterprise Rent-a-car is right next door, just in case you need a reasonably priced rental car for a day, a night, or a weekend. The Enterprise guy even told me that Paul and Rob were good people. In this case, however, Mt Tam Motors had me back in my car and out of there same day. About ten years ago, I had a 1994 Acura Integra. Mount Tam Motors probably helped me squeeze an extra 50,000+ miles out of that overdriven car - which, at the time was a blessing. When I initially met Paul and Rob at the shop (I was introduced to them by a good friend), I immediately felt welcome. They were (and still remain) VERY friendly and nice. I had a great feeling about this place from the get-go. The quality of service was top notch. Ten years later, I am still going there. With me, I care about consistency over time. Should really be more like 2.8 stars. Sometimes to most of the time Mt. Tam do the work and it's fine, but ahem, you -can- get a neoprene main rear oil seal for an '88 Diplomat (from the dealer), and you should -not- use a rope seal. Also, you charged me $600 to supposedly fix my heater, but I have problems with it again. Did you really spend ten hours on it? What's your warranty? If what you need is something basic like a new battery or brakes they're probably fine but I stopped going there. read more

Rob is amazing. I wanted to install solar on my truck to power a horse trailer and was referred to Mount Tam Motors by the good folks at Rack n Road. From the start, Rob was on board with my vision. I told him that I wanted to feed solar power to my horse trailer, place the batteries on my trailer tongue and mount the solar panels on either a tonneau cover or camper shell on my truck and he rightly advised me to go with the shell for legit reasons. He said that he would also wire my electrical so my truck would charge the batteries while running. Then, he jumped on craigslist and found me a used one and sent me the link! He even did the searching on Amazon and other online sources to make sure I was getting the best deal on inverters and panels. Working with Rob, you get the feeling that anything you want is possible and he can get it done. I tend to be a nervous person around big purchases and projects. He totally set my mind at ease. This is a great shop, and I actually made this yelp account so I could give them a great review. Paul and Rob are very friendly and professional. I had been given an appointment and estimate from a different shop to fix a gas leak, but then I remembered Paul from a smog check he did for me a few yrs ago. So I brought my car back to him (w/o no appointment )and Paul diagnosed the problem and gave me an estimate within 15 minutes. Paul's price for the part Id need to fix the problem was 1/2 ( yes One Half) less than the same part from the first shop. I brought the car in the next morning for the repairs and it was ready on time in the early afternoon. For what I would have paid elsewhere to fix just the fuel leak, I ended up getting a complete tune up on top of that for the same price.
