I have had two of my dogs treated at this location. They have specialists on staff that can handle issues that a neighborhood vet is not equipped to treat. When I first started coming here on referral from my regular vet, the owners were not allowed to go inside due to the pandemic. Upon arrival, I had to park in a numbered parking spot out front, call the number on the sign, and someone would come out and take my dog inside to see the vet. The vet would then call me to discuss the appointment findings and the recommended course of action. Once the visit was complete, the tech would bring my dog back out to me. More recently when I've visited, I was able to go inside with my dog and wait in an exam room. However, when the vet examined my dog, the tech would take my dog to another location where I was not present to see what was happening. I prefer to be with my dog during the visit. My latest visit was because my dog had a serious issue, and we ended up having to make the hard decision to put her down. Mountain West performed the procedure in a special bereavement room with a couch. It was nice that they separated me from the busy exam rooms and waiting room of the facility for this painful process. During all of my visits, the staff were friendly and accommodating. A few things I wished were different are that I have always asked but never received a printed copy of the visit summary for my dogs. They are very automated and seem to prefer to not print anything. And it is hit and miss with getting the summary via email also. Also because they are an emergency facility, they post on the walls and doors that there may be a long wait due to possible emergencies coming in. I usually have waited no less and 1 hour and as much as 5 hours during my appointment. There does not seem to be a option for a quicker turn around. read more

The minute we arrived they immediately took care of my dog; from the medical assistants, front office personnel and major kudos to Dr. Jess! This group of professionals showed such care, kindness, and compassion, keeping me informed about everything. Recently, my son & I brought his dog into Mountain West Vet Specialists with a life ending condition. My son's dog (named Lizzy) was in our car, but not able to move. The staff quickly brought a gurney to the parking lot to put Lizzy on, and immediately wheeled her into the back treatment area for evaluation. Staff member Brittney was so good at checking us in, working us through some paperwork, and supporting us through throughout. Dr. Wang was the vet that evaluated Lizzy. Dr. Wang did a wonderful job of explaining Lizzy's condition, and supporting a decision to put Lizzy to sleep. She performed the procedure, and did so in a very caring & sympathetic way. My cat ate a ribbon and I was worried it would wrap in his intestine and end up with my losing my little guy - but Mountain West saved the day. I'd first gone to another 24hr Vet ER in SLC and they induced vomiting to try and get the ribbon out with no luck. They said they could attempt to pull it out with a scope - but their scope was broken. FIVE other 24hr vet ER locations turned me away for either not having a scope or not having someone who could operate the scope. I drive all the way north to Layton and they were finally able to get the ribbon out successfully with a scope to avoid major surgery! They were honest all throughout that the procedure might not work and we're straightforward with the costs. I appreciated that and they were always kind and forthcoming. I'm so happy they were able to get it out and my dude has been happy and thriving ever since (with no more ribbons). read more

When I brought my beardie in she was completely lifeless. Her eyes would open but that was it. Turns out she has diabetes.... Who knew?! Dr. Lofgren has been so attentive and informative. As I tried Dr. Google. So many people said this wasn't a thing but the reputable sites stated it was. It's that uncommon but she was ready with some info and steps to go forward to see if we could fix her. I guess bearded dragons don't respond yo insulin. we are awaiting CT results but when I visited her today she moved, tried to crawl up to my shoulder. I know we aren't there yet but at least I know my girl isn't as painful as she was. Her team is simply the best. So caring and supportive. I really don't think there is anywhere better. read more

Bluffdale location. It has taken me since January 22, 2025 to even begin to write down how horrific my experience with this facility was, without breaking down. From the frontline staff, to the care, to the aftercare. My first visit with my badly injured puppy was met with an annoyed "You know we DO have other patients here too" . This was in response to my question about her comment, "it will be a minute, we have some complications", which I had initially thought referred to my dog. This same vibe goes all the way to the day of my dogs death 4 days later when the vet notified me of her passing - promising me a call back because she was in-between shifts. I waited and waited and finally drove to see my dog - Only to find she had already been in the freezer. When I got there the aftercare person then confused my dog with another "Daisy" in the facility and I had to ask her to go doublecheck she had the right one! I was denied the chance to say goodbye to my dog (in an unfrozen state) due to the above incompetence. But to TOP IT OFF, when I called the contracted crematory a couple days later, they did not have record of my dog. I called Mountain West and the frontline staff told me they did not have record of my dog still being there. It took them over 45 min, for who I believe was the office manager, to call me back to let me know my dog had been placed in the wrong freezer and apologizing. They then expedited her cremation for me. The night before my dog passed, during a visit, the vet tech mentioned I could take her home that night. (this was close to 9pm) I commented that my dog has drains, The vet has made no effort to speak to me in person, and I do not know how to clean drains, care for drains, or shown how to properly change her multiple dressings, and asked how much another night would be (I was on night 4) she then proceeds to show me how to drain the drains right there in the visiting room...on top of a blanket that had another dogs hair all over it. Because of my lack of training for her care, I left my dog there another night tthinking overnight care would be safer. At 5:37 am that next morning, the notes say "no concerns" and at 6:40 she was in respiratory arrest and passed After speaking to the Facility Administrator for both locations , I was assured the staff would have empathy training. (They should be prepared for the emotions of the client who brings in an injured animal and treat them with respect and kindness, not as if your working at a fast food counter). Both the office manager and the facility manager apologized for the mistrust they caused. I appreciate the responsiveness they had with my concerns, however it does not and will not ever make up for my awful experience. I have notified the first EM vet facility I visited (Blue Pearl was fantastic but was not an overnight facility) who recommended Mountain West to me and also let them of know of my concerns about their recommendation. Note: Do NOT wait for them to call you back, you MUST call them if you want an update. If you want a copy of medial records, ask for the detailed records not just a summary, they will not just hand those over. (The surgical vet did not even have any notes of what occurred during my dogs surgery on Jan 20 -until I requested the records day and days later. On that same date, Feb 3, is when he entered the information) to end, I hope no one dealing with a tragic experience with their pet ever has to have such a horrible treatment ON TOP of the agony and heartache already being managed. I love Mountain West Veterinary for their exotics doctors and facility. Having an emergency with exotic pets can be a nightmare but the staff at Mountain West really stepped up and helped us with one of our lizards recently. I showed up without an appointment and they said they'd work me in to the schedule as soon as possible. I was surprised when Dr. Lofgren, the lead vet over exotics, greeted me after a very short wait. She was very understanding and empathetic as she counseled with me on the options for treating our beloved pet. Ultimately due to his age and concerns with his quality of life, I made the difficult decision to have him euthanized. The staff gave me as much time as I needed to say goodby and after it was done, they presented me with a nice condolences card, complete with ink footprints from our lizard. Dr. Lofgren was amazing to work with, as were all the staff members I interacted with. I was also pleased to note that she is certified with the Assoc. of Reptile & Amphibian Veterinarians AND the Assoc. of Avian Veterinarians. To start, I just want to say that I fully understand vets need to get paid for their hard work. 100%. But I've been sitting on our experience here for a few days, and I am no less disgusted with the way the staff here handled our situation. We brought our very sick kitten in here, and before anyone would even touch her, we had to sign an agreement to authorize them to perform up to $500 worth of emergency care. They then took her back and sat us in a private room to wait. Long story short, our poor girl was VERY sick. While the vet we spoke to was incredibly kind, compassionate, and thorough in her explanation, as well as her cost estimate and professional opinion (it MIGHT have helped, but it would take over $1200 for the first 24 hours alone), we ultimately decided to humanely euthanize because it was just too much financially, plus she was just too little to be put through that much. We were devastated and a little shell-shocked. Within minutes of making this impossible decision, the two girls (vet techs? Front desk staff?) were in the room talking about how we wanted to dispose of our pet's body, whether we wanted to take her home in a box or coffin ($$), have her individually cremated so we could get an urn of her ashes ($$), or opt for a "group cremation" where we would not receive her remains back (still costs $$). We were still processing the fact our new pet was about to die, not thinking about how to dispose of her. Next, we were asked if we wanted to purchase any "paw print memorabilia". What? Soon after, we are being asked to pay our bill immediately, up front, right there. Upon learning we could not fork over hundreds of dollars right then and there, the girl's forced "compassion" changed to hostility and unmasked judgement. We were forced to sign a contract, provide a credit card and payment schedule, plus drivers license and social security number. This was MINUTES after deciding to put our baby kitten down. After completing this contract, we were physically blocked at the door due to not providing every single requested detail. We seriously just needed a little time to wrap our heads around what happened. Again, I get it. Vets need to and deserve to be paid. But the staff who handled our case could do to learn A LOT more compassion and tact. We left feeling emotionally drained, devastated, and honestly like terrible humans for not having thousands of dollars readily available to pay these people. I know there aren't many emergency vets around here, and honestly I was perfectly fine with the actual vet we dealt with. But if you go here, plan on spending lots and lots of your money, even when your pet ends up dead. It was truly worse than the funeral home salespeople I encountered after my father's death. read more

We had an emergency late last night where our dog swallowed a large pacifier and we needed to induce vomiting ASAP. I called two other emergency vets and they were not able to take us. Mountain west answered and originally said that while their doctors were in surgeries, they would try to get her in as soon as possible. I drove the 40 mins there and when I got there, they said it was a 3-4 hour wait! I explained that if that amount of time passed, it would be too late, and a surgery when then be required, a surgery which we couldn't afford. They understood the situation and got a doctor to look at her almost immediately. And shortly after, the pacifier was out. I spent in total about 1.5 hours there and was on my way home at midnight. I'm very grateful for the entire team! They prioritized our situation and took care of our dog so late in the evening, and put up with us. And ultimately, the bill wasn't even all that bad. If you need to take your animal here, don't hesitate to do so! (One note for management, having to wait outside really sucked and was very uncomfortable. Fortunately it was midnight, but I couldn't have imagined having to wait in the middle of the day. Most animal and human hospitals alike have been letting people in waiting rooms for a long time now. I took my two rabbits in for a check up and second opinion. Dr. Lofgren and her staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. I asked so many questions, they were able to explain everything to me without making me feel like a bother. We will definitely be back - hopefully for only yearly check ups and no more sick visits. They are pricey but you do get what you pay for, a clean environment, very educated staff. You're wasting your money by going elsewhere. read more

I was referred to Andrew Burton at mountain west in July 2022 as my French Bulldog (Calvin) had recently developed a bump on his neck the size of a walnut, and our primary vet could not treat him any further. She suggested a specialist, as it could be a damaged salivary gland and if so, it would need to be removed via surgery. I had to wait a bit for a consultation from Dr. Burton, but by August 2022 he got in and it was very quick, and I had to remain in my car. I have no idea what Dr. Burton did to determine that he did in fact have a damaged salivary gland, but his confidence in his condition and ability to fix him via surgery made me ready to pursue, even though I was nervous about Calvin being put under and knew he'd have a difficult recovery. By the day of surgery in September, Calvin's bump was now a large mass the size of a tennis ball. I assumed this was still related to the salivary gland and couldn't wait to have this behind us. Calvin came home and was extremely drugged up, and in a lot of pain. His mass was still there, but I wondered if it was due to being swollen. Dr. Burton informed me later that he actually hadn't been able to remove much of anything, because it looked like a tumor, so he took a biopsy sample instead. Days later Dr. Burton reached out with the biopsy results, informing me that Calvin's mass was a tumor and I'd need to reach out to oncologists for future vet needs. I was able to quickly get in to see the oncologists at MedVet in salt lake, where Calvin was diagnosed with cancer, and because it was aggressive, and had been months since first being noticed, the cancer had traveled to his stomach. This meant options to treat it were limited, and instead of surgically removing it and treating with chemo, the only option was to treat with chemo to give us maybe one month more than if we hadn't. Calvin slowly deteriorated each month, and we had to say goodbye December 29, 2022. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, and watching Calvin recover from a serious surgery while taking chemo at the same time, are not the memories I like to think about. I blame Dr. Burton for the death of Calvin, and believe he would have performed any surgery as long as I paid. To think that Calvin's cancer could have been removed by oncology if it had been identified correctly by a specialist during the consultation, meant I'd have years left with Calvin vs losing him 4 months after a "specialist" performed unnecessary surgery on him. I paid thousands to Dr Burton to treat Calvin, and even though he didn't remove what was stated I was still charged the full amount. If you want to speak with the surgeon after surgery, don't hold your breath. Calvin's wound continued to open and bleed, and even though I was charged for a cone I never received one. I was charged for every visit afterwards as emergency care vs post surgery care, and when coming in at 2 AM because we thought my Calvin was going to bleed to death, we were met with very aggressive and rude staff. We were told that he needed to wear his cone, so we asked for it but were never given one, but the emergency staff made me extremely uncomfortable. I worried they'd let Calvin bleed out to prove a point bc that was the attitude they carried. The oncologists at MedVet will not perform surgery without a CT scan, so they know what to expect when opening up their patients. The cost would have been the less, which is why I likely was not offered it by Dr Burton, for a CT scan, surgery and chemo vs unnecessary surgery based on a whim, emergency aftercare and then chemo. The oncologists seemed to wonder why Dr. Burton operated on him, and were concerned as to why he took the steps he did. Do not come here for your specialty care, and wherever you go, get a second opinion. To see a patient with a walnut sized bump grow to a tennis ball in such a short time, and still move forward with surgery vs questioning other routes, is nothing short of malpractice. That's supposedly very uncommon and cancer should have been considered. We sold our car in order to get Calvin care, and feel so taken advantage of. We would have spent every dime to try to save Calvin and I think Dr Burton took advantage of us. read more

GO HERE. I'd give them 1,000 stars if I could cause they deserve them all! This our preferred clinic but they were super busy on the night we needed to take our dog in for a deep laceration on his paw. Looking back it was a big mistake. Hindsight is 20/20, right? And costly. I like details when making these types of decisions so here you go. Quick back story for comparison. The "other" vet took SIX hours, did not communicate at all and WE had to call THEM, twice. They did not wrap the wound and I don't think they even properly stitched it. Took bloodwork, put him under and so much money later the stitches didn't even hold 24 hours! Yes, we followed instructions. That horrific experience cost us $500 and an arm. 4 days later we find ourselves needing him reevaluated. Enter Mountain west! Wound is stapled up, BANDAGED, TWO phone calls to update and all in less than two hours WITH critical patients being admitted. I know cause I asked out of curiosity to compare experiences. Our hindsight cost is $155 and I got to keep my leg. Holla! Moral of the story, these people are fantastic and I told Dr. Jeff Simmons if it weren't for COVID, I'd give him a big fat squeeze for being awesome! I have no idea what these other 1-2 stars are all about. NO CLUE. I've been here twice with nothing but good to say. Lesson learned, love my peeps at Mountain West! read more

An absolutely amazing ER Veterinary practice! I will forever bring my emergencies to Mountain West Veterinary Specialists. I brought my 7 month bulldog puppy to them in a panic after taking her to Advanced veterinary care and a couple other clinics who all couldn't figure out what was wrong. Dr. Langheinrich was amazing! He did further diagnostics to determine the underlying issue, and communicated his treatment plan and what he thought was happening to us extremely well. 3 hours later she walked out completely different than the very sick puppy she was when she went in! 12 hours later the swelling is down, she's eating again and her prolapsed third eyelid is returning to its normal position! I paid a fortune at AVC for them to tell me they weren't sure what was wrong and send her home. Not at Mountain West! Dr. Langheinrich and his team cared so much and you could tell! Their prices are incredibly reasonable for the work they do! I drove over an hour to get to them and it was so worth it!! Thank you Dr. Langheinrich, you and your team are incredible! read more

I've been here 3 times twice with my dog Loba (once because she was bien by another dog and the other time for a really bad ear infection) and once with my elderly cat (who had a really bad UTI). Everyone that's meet with us treated my animals ect had been so helpful professional and polite. I love that you can leave your pet there and they will call you when they are done as I have a small toddler so it can be really hard to wait at the vet for hours. The techs, vets and front desk support folks were all so caring, kind, and easy to work with. It was clear that they all have empathy for the families going through stress. This place is very hit or miss, depending on what doctor you get.... we took our baby in 10 days ago, the first doctor we had (janell) nailed the problem on the head and told me he was developing an abscess and would treat it aggressively with antibiotics and anti inflammatory but may need a procedure to drain it if that didn't work Which we did.... After the treatment the swelling came back so we took him in again 8 days later This time not so lucky the doctor (Brittany?) barely took the time called and told us he had cherry eye and we need to call our vet to schedule surgery... i told her i didn't feel like that was the issue as I'm familiar with cherry eye... she was abrasive with me, i then asked if he had a fever (she had no idea) just told me to schedule surgery elsewhere.. So the next morning (10 hours later) we took him to antelope animal hospital for a second opinion and their amazing doctor confirmed it is not cherry eye but indeed an abscess and did the procedure to drain it for him 24 hours later now and he is looking 100% better and back to his playful self The first Doctor here was INCREDIBLE and for her i would go back, thank goodness for a second opinion or my poor baby would have had unnecessary eye surgery again.... The Dr who helped us was so professional, conscientious and caring. She wasn't able to save our hamster but she treated that animal with the same care you'd expect to find with a human physician. When in an emergency situation, I can always count on Mountain West vet clinic. I have a very accident prone golden retriever. They have been so trustworthy and fast with treating him. Today I had a chicken who suddenly fell very ill. This being my first sick chicken, I reached out to multiple vets in the area. No appointments were available in the time frame needed,which is understandable. However I felt that no one was willing to give me advice on how to care for her or precautions to take for the rest of my flock. Mountain west was the only clinic who came through for me. Although my chicken did not make it, they treated me and her as if she were important and loved. I'm grateful this clinic was available in an urgent situation. This isn't our normal emergency vet clinic. The vet(s) seemed great. After trying to set up a follow up as instructed by the vet in our previous discharge, we got conflicting information and were totally confused. After about four phone calls, the vet, who "wasn't available" for two more weeks called and "fired" us. So much for the large amount of money we paid that "included" visits with the vet for up to a year. Unprofessional. Save the anguish and head to Med Vet Northern Utah in Sunset. read more

I took my healthy 7 yr old cat to Mtn West, Layton. He was not jumping up, but was using his back leg although no pain. It was unusual & took him here as I was new in town. He had xrays, showing no back or spine issues at all, but said he appeared to have some fluid in his lung, no explanation or treatment for that. He had all clear blood work & given muscle relaxer & steroid. $700 & there for 5 hours! Noon to 5:00pm, 2 tests. He seemed otherwise fine, the vet Dr Guzman, seemed very unconcerned, offered no opinions on care, just meds. No chest fluid option treatment. Couple nights later, he was crying in pain at 4:00am. Rushed him over & was told he had an embolism & was dying, That took only 20 minutes to evaluate (?) howling in agony the entire time. I begged them to give him something! Had my sweet cat put down, he was in agony. What happened the 1st visit?? The fluid was ignored, embolism might've been avoided..never even investigated it. Another $250, exam & cremation costs.. I found them all lacking in concern & careless in their treatment. read more

She was able to remove our 27 year old cat's feces build up without anesthesia (which would have been highly risky). Excellent communication. This place is still being very strict about COvID. Years after it ended. They won't let you even come inside. When you are having an emergency with your pet, you don't want to have it treated like a fast food order. The phone number does not go to a live person unless you choose an emergency. When you get there you are supposed to wait in a stall. The stalls just have the same phone number with no option for a live person. They still had to come outside and take our pet from us so not letting us come inside did nothing for protecting them from COVID. read more

It is ridiculous to make people wait outside in the heat (or burning ridiculously expensive gas just to keep the car idling for ac-which is horrible for the environment) just because of Covid. (Writing this on 7.5.22) Not even the staff are wearing masks! I've been out here in 100 degree weather for an hour waiting because I'm not allowed in. I'm worried about my pet and the heat is only making me more anxious. Seriously, Covid should no longer be an excuse for not letting people in!!! Edit: Took them 5 hours to give me two prescriptions, and didn't tell me how to administer the medicine. The bottle has little info on it. I didn't get any paperwork showing what was done. I was referred to them by another facility who was not only unable to take care of my dog but were also charging me $187 MORE to do the exact same work up. My dog has a very serious disease and thanks to these vets/vet techs, she has made a full recovery!! I was very pleased with this clinic. I have been to other ER vet clinics who are extremely understaffed and have no care for our furry babies. They just want to get them in and out with wallets open. One Star! Totally missed the mark on reading and diagnosing the Ultrasound on my dog. On Feb 2nd I took my dog to my regular vet for lethargy, they ran a blood test and said the liver was not functioning properly and she needed an ultrasound to determine if there was a liver tumor. Mountain West was one of two places (in the Ogden area) that could do it. My Vet contacted Mountain West and requested the Ultrasound. They (Mountain West) stated they had to call in a vet (from home) to do this. The Vet completed the Ultra Sound and diagnosed my dog with "numerous spleen tumors, they were possibly cancerous", and recommended surgery. I set up the surgery for the following Monday with a surgeon at Mountain West. It turns out the blood work was not good and they recommended to medicate and delay. After three weeks I followed up with my regular Vet and scheduled the surgery with them to biopsy the liver and remove the spleen (recommended by Mountain West). My regular Vet did surgery and discovered the spleen had no tumors and is in perfect health. The Mountain West Vet who conducted and interpreted the Ultra Sound either didn't know what she was doing or did not know what she was looking for. Either way I am not pleased nor do I trust their ability to diagnose / treat. The total bill charged by Mountain West was over $2000. Thank you mountain west staff! We have taken our dogs in many a time (accident prone) but this last visit was for our beloved iguana, Pascal. During this time the vet and vet techs were fantastic, compassionate and professional. With the support from the vet we did end up putting him down due to a failing liver and kidney. Even though we didn't ask we got sent a lovely card with his little paw print. We did not get more time with him, but we are so grateful for the wonderful staff taking such good care of him and us! read more

The only vet near Salt Lake County that was able to see my dog for a deep bite wound on a Sunday night. They took him in right away with their curbside check-in to reduce COVID spread, the vet answered my questions over the phone about best case and worst case scenarios and price estimates, and we were able to take him home cleaned up and stapled a couple hours later. We took our dog who was unable to stand or walk into what we were told was an veterinarian emergency facility, Mountain West, to spend the first 15 minutes in the parking lot talking to one of the techs on the phone before being allowed into the facility. When we finally made it in we were taken into a room and told the vet is reviewing the notes and would be right in. 45 minutes later and no vet in sight, we decided enough was enough and left. Not sure what is/was wrong with our puppy but being fed shit and kept waiting way too long at this place isn't going to continue. Made an appointment elsewhere for tomorrow. Good example how hard it is to find decent services anymore, even when they are supposed to be professionals. read more

Horribly impolite staff & very unprofessional all around. Waited for four hours just for them to send my dog out with eye drops. Exact words from them on the phone were "this is just a pet hospital". Also tried to persuade us into a blood work panel for our dog which most certainly wasn't necessary. An institution which seems to operate solely to squeeze the life out of your pet and your wallet. read more

I had to take my cat to get euthanized there and they were so nice and caring towards my cat. They made sure she was not in any pain and she passed away peacefully in my arms. Great vet, technicians, and support staff. They made a horrible day a little more bearable. read more
