Movers" is, by far, the most arrogant, asinine, childishly silly, and mathematically challenged moving company I've ever encountered ... in my life. They seriously imagine we're supposed to submit to them a detailed list of the items being moved and apparently they think they can "calculate" what they want to use (i.e., what they want to charge you), not what you actually need. If you've moved before and added/subtracted certain types of items (e.g., appliances, larger or smaller sofa, gaming computer), then you pretty much know how much more/less truck space you'll need as compared to the last move. Worse, their expectation is that you'll be perfectly okay with them separating all your possessions ... that you'll NEED in your new home ... and storing them behind their fence somewhere and you'll just sit in your empty house without the ability to start organizing, cooking, cleaning, etc. It's utterly insane that anyone thinks that's a reasonable methodology. Every other moving company I called bases the move off the truck(s) that will be needed, yet this one somehow escaped from la-la land and bases the move off an "item count", lol. When I clarified that, YES, you can know what you need based off prior moves, the guy said "Oh, it doesn't work that way". No, sweetie ... YOU won't be working that way, not today, and not with me.

The person on the phone gave a rather confident estimate of 1 week and that they do that route often. It took double that time, which was still within the guaranteed time frame but given my conversation on the phone, I had made other plans contingent on a 1 week delivery estimate. Also, once I was booked with them, it was not easy to get a response via email or phone after leaving a voice message with the original person I spoke on the phone with to make changes or have questions answered. The ugly: They broke my bookshelf in transit and lost the screws to my TV stand. We put the TV stand and screws into a separate box. Upon arrival, the mover walked in with just the TV stand in hand, and no box (and no screws). I am still waiting for the claim to be processed. Overall, friendly over phone and email. Transparent pricing and breakdown. The actual moving was meh. They definitely talk the talk, but they didn't really walk the walk with me.

Bearded Brothers had wonderfully competitive pricing for three very polite, hard-working men, and a big 26' truck. Major points here: this moving company is a local, woman-owned business that employs awesome veterans: heck yeah on both of those fronts!! So into it! I was moving about 200 boxes of collectible books, another 100 tubs/boxes of miscellaneous fragile stuff, and like 10-12 pieces of big, very heavy, antique furniture (family heirlooms). The guys took care to wrap and move my stuff, which gave me some piece of mind during a hectic time. A couple of my very heavy items shifted during transport causing some damage to a couple of my plastic tubs and book boxes, but honestly I blame that on crappy houston roads... I contacted the owner about this though and she offered to credit me some time from the move to compensate for the damage, which was very nice. My three lovely movers were Alex, Kelly, and Marcos, and I would definitely work with them again! Win-win all the way around!

The communication issues began before the move. I had to call three separate times just to receive a quote, despite repeatedly being told one would be sent. I continued pursuing the company because I genuinely wanted to support a Black-owned business, but I should not have had to work that hard simply to give a company my business. Before booking, I spoke directly with Jay, the owner, and specifically described my inventory and move. I was moving from a STUDIO to a ONE-BEDROOM approximately FOUR MINUTES away and had already moved the overwhelming majority of my clothes, smaller belongings, and other items myself. The movers were primarily responsible for my bed, mattress/box spring, dresser, nightstand, sectional, and a limited number of boxes. Based on that information, Jay estimated approximately TWO HOURS, and I expected to pay around $300. I understood this was an estimate and would have considered three hours or somewhat longer reasonable. I did not expect SIX HOURS and a bill more than twice what I anticipated. The biggest issue was efficiency. There were two movers, and I want to distinguish between them. One was kind, professional, and worked efficiently. I genuinely appreciated him and have no complaints about his performance. The other mover was noticeably slower. Multiple trips between my apartment and the truck took close to 30 minutes, and at one point I genuinely wondered where he was. Ironically, this same mover acknowledged, "Yeah, you don't have a lot of furniture." It ultimately took approximately FOUR HOURS just to load the truck. Because this company charges hourly, efficiency directly affects the customer's bill. I never rushed the movers, interfered with their work, or complained to them about their pace. After more than three hours had passed and we had not even left my studio apartment, I simply contacted the company to ask whether what I was observing was normal. Unfortunately, Jay's response made the experience considerably worse. Rather than investigating why the move was taking substantially longer than his estimate, he became defensive and condescending. He repeatedly defended the crew by telling me he had personally trained "these boys," that they were athletes and basketball players, that they were among his "top-of-the-line" movers, and that he had never received complaints about them. He then proceeded to explain the moving process to me, suggesting that I did not realize how much furniture I had or was failing to account for the time required to carry furniture through the building, use the elevator, walk to the truck, and load it. I found this incredibly patronizing and completely beside the point. This was my FOURTH move, and I moved into this exact studio three years ago with essentially the SAME furniture. I understand that furniture has to be carried, taken on elevators, loaded, transported, and unloaded. More importantly, Jay was the person I gave my inventory to before booking and the person who estimated approximately two hours. His own mover even acknowledged that I did not have much furniture. Ultimately, it took nearly FOUR HOURS to load and approximately SIX HOURS total to move a limited amount of furniture from a STUDIO to a ONE-BEDROOM FOUR MINUTES AWAY. And after all that time, my furniture was scuffed and marks were left on the walls of my new apartment. I understand estimates are not guarantees. But there is a significant difference between a two-hour estimate becoming three hours and a two-hour estimate becoming SIX. When a customer raises a reasonable concern about that discrepancy, the appropriate response is to investigate and address it--not argue with the customer or condescendingly explain how moving works. The excessive time, resulting cost, damage to my furniture and walls, poor communication, and especially the owner's response made this an extremely disappointing experience. We had a 3 bedroom home full of furniture, and they quoted 2 trucks and 7 men. We packed most of our own boxes, but Meila suggested we let them package our tv's, art and grandfather clock. We have used other companies who send out 3 or 4 men, one truck, and they end up making several trips, work all day and into the night, and never seem to finish. They get tired, disgusted and want to quit before the job is finished, AND we get tired and disgusted and swear there must be a better way. Meila Moving is a better way. Melia made our move so easy. On moving day, 3 trucks and 7 men showed up. They all worked to load the first truck, then parked that truck and pulled up another empty one and they all worked together to load it. They padded everything with cardboard, then wrapped it tight with shrink wrap. They had all three trucks loaded in 3 hours. We drove to our new home, and they took the time to place everything in the correct rooms, assembled all the furniture, and cleaned up their mess. There were no hidden charges, no surprises, and no damage. These guys are true professionals. They all spoke English. Don't waste you money hiring some college kids or day laborers with a truck. Upon delivery, we discovered much damage to our chona cabinet base that they fixed with epoxy and paper. When I busted the warehouse, I was distressed to see it stored on end and there was much damage on that end. The shades were thrown in garment bags and returned wrinkled. My husbands ties were thrown in a box and returned unwearable. They broke two men's valets, the spines of hundreds of books and over 50 picture frames. They tried to leave without properly assembling our bed because they lost some hardware. They paid us nothing because we had a $1500 deductible and the damaged books were irreplaceable. We made no claim for the book bindings because it would destroy any remaining value. Use at your own risk.

Jack and his crew showed up on time and ready to go, and even with my apartment complex's parking lot renovations making things a bit harder for them, they were able to make my move as stress-free as possible! They disassembled all of my furniture, wrapped it carefully, and loaded the truck all very quickly and efficiently. Their professionalism and preparedness really helped make this a great experience. It was a huge relief knowing that my things are in such good hands. Even during the drive from Austin to The Woodlands, Jack made sure to call every hour or so to let us know how far away they were. It had been 10 years since my last move and while I loved my previous mover (Breda), they couldn't help me out with long-distance move. I will be the first to admit that I am high-maintenance when it comes to my stuff. I'm not some college kid with a studio full of IKEA. I am a grown-up, with a B&B Italia sofa and a burgeoning art collection. I am more than willing to pay for the careful transport of my belongings. The question was, who do I trust? After doing the research on the "pod" companies (Red Box, Smart Box, PODS, etc.) it was clear that for my needs, PODS was the way to go (stay tuned for a review on them once my interstate move is completed). Because you can't park a PODS unit on a major city street, you need a 3rd party mover to load and then reload your stuff. PODS has an exclusive relationship with EMS Movers. Now, I liked what I read about EMS on Yelp...but I didn't like the fact that they estimate your move over the phone; they don't come out in person. Everything I read about how to have a successful move said to run, not walk from a company that won't look at your stuff in person. Hence, my dilemma... Enter Jason at EMS Movers. This guy is 5 stars all the way...patient, reassuring, knowledgeable and did I say patient? Seriously, I've worked in customer service and Jason is an MVP! EMS is lucky to have him. I'll spare you the drama of my move. Suffice it to say, Chris and his crew did a terrific job packing and moving my belongings. They were even able to fit it all in to one container (as opposed to the 2 I expected to need)...that's another benefit to having professionals pack your stuff. Jason, you rock my man!
